Media Writing<br />

This project based course teaches students how to<br />

function as writers and editors in a digital publishing<br />

environment. Students will write an article geared<br />

towards magazine or news publication; produce an<br />

advertising campaign; a media release; a newsletter; and<br />

a web page. They will also prepare a cover letter and a<br />

résumé for a position in the publishing industry, along<br />

with a portfolio containing samples of their work.<br />

Methodology: Multimedia lectures, writing and editing<br />

exercises, creative projects including sketching, team<br />

projects including group presentations and compiling a<br />

portfolio of media publications.<br />

Web Publishing I: HTML, CSS, JavaScript<br />

(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />

students only)<br />

Using a practical approach, this course provides<br />

comprehensive instruction in the underlining elements of<br />

web design: HyperText Markup Language (HTML),<br />

Cascading StyleSheets (CSS) and JavaScript. The use of<br />

pictures and graphics on web pages is discussed in detail,<br />

including considerations of file size, resolution and image<br />

optimization. Students will learn and apply design<br />

principles including information structure, visual<br />

composition, and user interaction. Additional topics<br />

include developing storyboards, using proper<br />

typography, as well as applying accessibility and usability<br />

principles.<br />

Methodology: on-screen demonstrations, slide lectures,<br />

hands-on tutorials and practical applications.<br />

Design for Advertising<br />

(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />

students only)<br />

This project-based course provides hands-on experience<br />

in producing promotional documents. Building on the<br />

skills learned in Advertising Communication, students will<br />

design and produce advertisements for print and web, as<br />

well as a promotional advertising campaign. Students will<br />

partake in both individual and group projects. This<br />

process will involve research and sketches while<br />

communication skills will be evaluated through written<br />

rationale and oral presentations.<br />

Methodology: Multimedia presentations, writing and<br />

editing exercises, creative projects, researching on the<br />

Web.<br />

Web Publishing II: Dreamweaver<br />

(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />

students only)<br />

Dreamweaver is a web page authoring and web site<br />

management software program. In this course students<br />

learn and apply software features to design, code and<br />

create professional-looking web applications. Emphasis is<br />

placed on creating dynamic and interactive web sites<br />

that are visually appealing informative, usable and<br />

functional. Students will create individually and in teams,<br />

increasingly complex web sites using advanced<br />

management techniques.<br />

Methodology: demonstrations, lectures, hands-on<br />

computer tutorials, theory and practical tests and a final<br />

project.<br />

Animated Graphics I: Flash<br />

(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />

students only)<br />

Flash is an animation and multimedia authoring program.<br />

In this course, students will design and produce timebased<br />

graphic communications: linear animations,<br />

interactive web sites and stand-alone multimedia<br />

applications. They will learn how to create Flash objects<br />

and symbols using drawing and text tools, apply<br />

animation techniques, import media elements, and write<br />

simple ActionScript code. Students will analyze and<br />

understand the requirements of multimedia project<br />

production and management, including how to produce<br />

a project proposal.<br />

Methodology: On-screen computer demonstrations,<br />

hands-on exercises, creative projects, and tests.<br />
