Digital Graphics 2: Adobe Illustrator<br />
(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />
students only)<br />
In this course, students will produce vector illustrations<br />
to be used in print media. They will become skilled at<br />
mastering Illustrator drawing tools and techniques<br />
including: creating paths using the pen tool, creating<br />
shape and text objects, working with gradient mesh,<br />
applying appearance attributes and working with layers<br />
and transformation tools. Students will also learn how to<br />
prepare files for use by service bureaus and printers.<br />
Methodology: on-screen demonstrations, hands-on<br />
exercises, content-driven projects that include research<br />
as well as concept exploration through sketching and<br />
tests.<br />

(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />
students only)<br />
QuarkXPress is used by designers, writers, typesetters,<br />
and document producers to create professional-quality<br />
publications ranging from print media, such as<br />
newspapers and magazines, to on-line web sites. This<br />
course will provide students with basic working<br />
knowledge of QuarkXPress in the areas of typography,<br />
page layout, and graphics manipulation. Topics covered<br />
include an introduction to QuarkXPress, working with<br />
text, creating and editing styles and colours, creating<br />
tables, working with master pages and style sheets.<br />
Student projects include designing and producing<br />
identity kits, posters, magazines covers, and newsletters.<br />
They will also compile a desktop publishing portfolio.<br />
Methodology: multimedia lectures, hands-on tutorials,<br />
performance assessments, design critiques, client based<br />
work and theory tests.<br />

Advertising Communication<br />
(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />
students only)<br />
Students will be introduced to advertising concepts and<br />
principles. They will examine the Canadian advertising<br />
industry and understand how advertising impacts the<br />
success of specific corporate objectives. Students will<br />
learn how to formulate and communicate the right<br />
message to a well-defined target audience and how to<br />
produce an integrated communication plan.<br />
Methodology: Multimedia lectures, videos, research<br />
assignments, creative projects including sketching, team<br />
projects including group presentations and theory tests.<br />

InDesign is used by designers, writers, typesetters and<br />
document producers to create professional-quality<br />

Digital Graphics III: Integration<br />
(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />
students only)<br />
This course will give students more advanced skill levels<br />
when manipulating two-dimensional computer graphics<br />
in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. They will prepare<br />
images for print and graphics for the Web. Students will<br />
also perfect their process skills, by documenting their<br />
research, the evolution of their concepts in sketches, and<br />
their final comps using Adobe Acrobat Professional.<br />
Methodology: on-screen computer demonstrations,<br />
hands-on tutorials, creative projects and tests.<br />
