Introduction to Flash<br />

Flash is a major content-creation technology used to<br />

create interactive, visually stunning, sound and video-rich<br />

web sites. It can also be used to produce standalone<br />

movies that can be distributed on CD. In this course, you<br />

will explore the basics of Flash and, through the creation<br />

of stimulating hands-on projects, will learn how to create<br />

Flash objects and symbols with drawing and text tools,<br />

use animation techniques, import media elements, and<br />

write basic ActionScript. You will learn the steps involved<br />

in putting together a Flash project and how to effectively<br />

work as part of a project team.<br />

Public Speaking for Beginners<br />

(Complementary course - open to all students)<br />

Much of “whom” and “what” we are is dependent on our<br />

ability to express ourselves verbally to others. The art of<br />

public speaking is one of the foremost mediums of selfexpression.<br />

This course is designed to give students<br />

competency in the art of oral communication and to give<br />

confidence in having the capacity to speak effectively and<br />

openly in a variety of situations. Emphasis will be placed<br />

on speaking techniques and clarity of expression. A<br />

further emphasis will be to assist the students to develop<br />

ideas and concepts so that they can project and<br />

communicate these thoughts with a personable style and<br />

a logical order of delivery.<br />

World Religions<br />

(Religion for Liberal Arts students only)<br />

This course traces the development of religious ideas in<br />

both the Western and Eastern traditions. It examines the<br />

beliefs and historical contexts of the three Semitic religions -<br />

Judaism, Christianity and Islam - as well as Hinduism,<br />

Buddhism and Taoism. In each case the influence of other<br />

religions and systems of thought is taken into consideration.<br />

Comparative themes are examined to see how each<br />

religious worldview answers basic questions of human<br />

existence. Throughout the course key texts from each<br />

religion are studied in English translation.<br />

Astronomy<br />

Students in this course will develop an understanding of<br />

astronomy concepts and will apply this knowledge by<br />

solving problems, preparing and performing a group<br />

presentation, and writing a research paper. The topics<br />

covered in this course will include the history of<br />

astronomical observations and cosmological theories and<br />

how they are being used today. This course will describe the<br />

solar system the galaxy, stellar evolution, the universe and<br />

the possibility of life in the universe as well as describing the<br />

methods used (telescopes, detectors, probes) to study the<br />

universe.<br />

Music: From Jazz to Rap to Techno<br />

(Complementary course - open to all students)<br />

Words and music combine to affect our thoughts and<br />

emotions. Contemporary music styles like Rap, Rock,<br />

Blues, Jazz, Techno and Trance are connected in many<br />

ways to each other and to older forms of music. This<br />

course will explore these various forms of music to find<br />

out what they have in common and what makes each<br />

distinct. Students will also learn about a wide variety of<br />

vocal styles and some of the basic music tools that artists<br />

use to express themselves, in order to understand how<br />

musicians and recording artists put message and melody<br />

together in both new and old style songs.<br />
