This course is an introduction to the basic concepts and<br />
techniques of photography. Taking photographs, developing<br />
black-and-white film, and making enlargements will be<br />
covered in detail. The course includes lectures,<br />
demonstrations and practice sessions both in the classroom<br />
and in the darkroom.<br />

Introduction to Studio Art<br />

This course is designed to introduce students to some<br />
practices in studio/fine arts production. Students will<br />
acquire a basic competency in several areas of study.<br />
There will be practical exercises which will cover<br />
techniques in both 2D and 3D traditions: drawing,<br />
modeling, carving/printing and assemblage will be<br />
included. Students will learn to work with varied<br />
materials such as pencil, pastels, paper, plasticine and<br />
clay.<br />

Writing about Music<br />

In this course, students will identify and react to the basic<br />
elements of music: melody, harmony and rhythm, and they<br />
will learn to provide critical commentary on musical trends.<br />
Students will understand how musical styles influence or<br />
reflect artistic, historical or social developments.<br />

Modern Art: Concepts and Practices<br />

The art of our century is different in many ways from the<br />
art of the past. These differences are the source of<br />
aesthetic pleasure for some, and bewilderment for<br />
others. What is modern art, and how is it made? Using a<br />
mixture of art making, art history and art theory,<br />
students will gain access to the principal ideas and<br />
techniques of modern art.<br />

Behind the Camera: TV Studio<br />

students)<br />
This course introduces the student to the fundamentals<br />
of television, stressing teamwork and studio production.<br />
After learning the basic technical aspects of television<br />
production, students will proceed with the production of<br />
their own T.V. material.<br />

2D Computer Animation Workshop<br />

students)<br />
Students are introduced to basic techniques of computer<br />
animation using desktop-based software such as<br />
MacroMedia’s Flash. Upon completion, students will be able<br />
to demonstrate competence with Vector and Paint-based 2-<br />
D graphics production; produce animation sequences using<br />
a range of animation techniques; complete a short<br />
animated work illustrating skills acquired during the course;<br />
and incorporate sound and other multimedia elements into<br />
a presentation.<br />

Creative Imaging with Photoshop<br />
(Complementary course - not open to Creative Arts<br />
students)<br />
This course is designed as a general introduction to the<br />
image editing software known as Adobe Photoshop. It is a<br />
hands-on computer workshop teaching the fundamental<br />
tools and techniques of 2D image manipulation. This course<br />
is geared toward students who want the basics on editing,<br />
creating and manipulating images. Students will learn how<br />
to scan images, use selection tools, work with layers, use<br />
paint and retouching tools, and deal with masks, filters,<br />
objects, text and colour. Resolution concepts, managing file<br />
formats and preparing files for output will be introduced.<br />
Students will be able to produce basic artwork containing<br />
multiple images, text and effects. Assignments will be single<br />
page image documents such as posters, flyers and cards. An<br />
emphasis will be placed on developing unique imagery and<br />
visual idiom, while integrating digital technology.<br />

Creative Writing<br />
(Complementary course - open to all students)<br />
This course is designed for students who have a special<br />
interest in creative writing. Students will learn to recognize<br />
what makes good writing good, whether it is poetry, fiction,<br />
plays, or essays. Students will complete various writing task<br />
and learn to critique their efforts and those of their peers.<br />
