<strong>The</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> (<strong>in</strong> <strong>Dan<strong>is</strong>h</strong>: <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> Døve) <strong>is</strong><br />

Denmark’s largest provider of services <strong>for</strong> deaf, deafbl<strong>in</strong>d<br />

and severely hear<strong>in</strong>g impaired persons.


All users of <strong>the</strong> services of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong><br />

have special communication needs and requirements.<br />

Most of, but not all, <strong>the</strong> users of our services require<br />

sign language, tactual sign language, or o<strong>the</strong>r communication<br />

methods adapted to <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

abilities.<br />

All hear<strong>in</strong>g staff at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> participate<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre’s comprehensive <strong>in</strong>ternal sign<br />

language tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> organized by <strong>the</strong><br />

Competence <strong>Centre</strong> at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong>,<br />

which also facilitates <strong>the</strong> development of competencies<br />

and methods at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> <strong>in</strong> a<br />

number of o<strong>the</strong>r areas.<br />

quality of <strong>the</strong> services that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong><br />

Tolkebook<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g department at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Deaf</strong>, “Tolkebook<strong>in</strong>g.dk”, provides <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g<br />

services to deaf and deafbl<strong>in</strong>d people throughout<br />

Denmark.<br />

With 130 <strong>in</strong>terpreters on staff, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Deaf</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>Denmark's</strong> largest provider of <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g<br />

services offer<strong>in</strong>g all types of sign language based<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpretation.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> website www.tolkebook<strong>in</strong>g.dk deaf users can<br />

book an <strong>in</strong>terpreter around <strong>the</strong> clock.<br />

Counsell<strong>in</strong>g services<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> employs a total of about<br />

50 counsellors and psycholog<strong>is</strong>ts, who are all<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g special<strong>is</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dividual fields. <strong>The</strong>y provide<br />

counsell<strong>in</strong>g, case management, and mental health<br />

services to deaf, deafbl<strong>in</strong>d and hear<strong>in</strong>g impaired<br />

people (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g CI-users), as well as to deaf families<br />

and elderly deaf people.<br />

Residential, occupational and<br />

vocational services<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> provides residential and<br />

occupational services, support centre services and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r services related to work assessment and<br />

special education programs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> target groups <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>se services are primarily<br />

deaf and deafbl<strong>in</strong>d people with various additional<br />

d<strong>is</strong>abilities such as aut<strong>is</strong>m, cognitive d<strong>is</strong>ability,<br />

ADHD, psychiatric problems, and multiple d<strong>is</strong>abilities<br />

among o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> has 15 different residential,<br />

occupational and vocational services with a total of<br />

about 230 places.<br />

<strong>The</strong> h<strong>is</strong>tory of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> goes back to<br />

1869.<br />

Today, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> has approx. 600 employees<br />

and serves all of Denmark with offices and<br />

services <strong>in</strong> Aalborg, Aarhus, Fredericia, Odense,<br />

Copenhagen, Nyborg, Nærum, Glostrup and Gladsaxe.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> <strong>is</strong> a non-profit foundation.<br />

Any profit that <strong>is</strong> generated goes back <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> foundation<br />

and <strong>is</strong> used <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> operation and fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

development of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>’s services.<br />
