The Centre for the Deaf (in Danish: Center for Døve) is
Denmark’s largest provider of services for deaf, deafblind
and severely hearing impaired persons.

All users of the services of the Centre for the Deaf
have special communication needs and requirements.
Most of, but not all, the users of our services require
sign language, tactual sign language, or other communication
methods adapted to their individual
abilities.
All hearing staff at the Centre for the Deaf participate
in the centre’s comprehensive internal sign
language training course. This is organized by the
Competence Centre at the Centre for the Deaf,
which also facilitates the development of competencies
and methods at the Centre for the Deaf in a
number of other areas.

Tolkebooking
The interpreting department at the Centre for the
Deaf, “Tolkebooking.dk”, provides interpreting
services to deaf and deafblind people throughout
Denmark.
With 130 interpreters on staff, the Centre for the
Deaf is Denmark's largest provider of interpreting
services offering all types of sign language based
interpretation.
On the website www.tolkebooking.dk deaf users can
book an interpreter around the clock.

Counselling services
The Centre for the Deaf employs a total of about
50 counsellors and psychologists, who are all
leading specialists in their individual fields. They provide
counselling, case management, and mental health
services to deaf, deafblind and hearing impaired
people (including CI-users), as well as to deaf families
and elderly deaf people.

Residential, occupational and
vocational services
The Centre for the Deaf provides residential and
occupational services, support centre services and
other services related to work assessment and
special education programs.
The target groups for these services are primarily
deaf and deafblind people with various additional
disabilities such as autism, cognitive disability,
ADHD, psychiatric problems, and multiple disabilities
among others.
The Centre for the Deaf has 15 different residential,
occupational and vocational services with a total of
about 230 places.

The history of the Centre for the Deaf goes back to
1869.
Today, the Centre for the Deaf has approx. 600 employees
and serves all of Denmark with offices and
services in Aalborg, Aarhus, Fredericia, Odense,
Copenhagen, Nyborg, Nærum, Glostrup and Gladsaxe.
The Centre for the Deaf is a non-profit foundation.
Any profit that is generated goes back into the foundation
and is used for the operation and further
development of the Centre’s services.
