Featuring The Singing Boys of Sioux Falls
The Senior Companion Program is happy to
announce The Singing Boys of Sioux Falls Concert
Choir will be performing at this year’s benefit concert
and raffle. They are an auditioned choir for boys,
grades 4-8. The boys perform sacred selections as
well as folk songs from around the world.

Madison Community Hospital Home Care and Hospice
Madison Home Care and Hospice
has been a part of the Madison
Community Hospital since 1991.
The hospice program is a branch of
Avera Hospice. Their services are
available in Madison, and reach out
to people in a 30-mile radius.
Home Care is an alternative to
traditional hospital care, providing a
full range of services in the home.
Their registered nurses are experienced
and trained. Home health
aides provide assistance with daily
activities such as bathing, grooming
and exercising. Also available are
homemaker services, which include
light housekeeping, meal preparation
and running errands. Rehabilitation
services of physical, occupational
and speech therapy also can
be provided in the home.
As a volunteer referral station for
the Senior Companion Program,
Madison Home Care accepts referrals
from a number of sources.
Home Care nurses identify people
who could benefit from Senior
Companion services. Other agencies
refer clients as well. Sometimes,
as a part of discharge
planning from the hospital,
Senior Companion services
are offered.
Lynn Landeen, director of
Madison Home Care and
Hospice says, “We feel
that the Senior Companion
Program is a huge benefit
and complements the other
services we can provide.”
“The community of Madison
has the best Senior Companions,”
says Sandy
Ferber, who coordinates
and schedules the five Madison
Senior Companions. “They go over
and above to accommodate their
clients and are a joy to work with.”

Lady Marion
Marion Eng was one of the first Senior
Companions in Rapid City, serving from
1998–2000 before becoming a client herself. A
daughter of one of Marion’s clients wrote the
following poem in appreciation for her work.

A very special lady
Came into our family.
It was as tho’ God planned it,
And, it was meant to be.
This lovely, little lady
Filled a very big need,
When we needed help for Mother,
And, Marion agreed.
So, she goes to visit Mondays,
And on Friday mornings, too.
If it were not for Marion,
I don’t know what we’d do.
She does kind things for Mother,
Takes her cinnamon rolls, too.
She knows how Mother loves them.
What a special thing to do.
She does the grocery shopping,
Getting such good things to eat.
Even takes her casseroles
For another welcome treat.
They might chat about the weather,
Or, when we kids were small.
And, it doesn’t even matter.
Mother loves it all.
Sometimes they go on “treasure hunts”
When something’s “put away.”
I can see the two of them,
Like little girls at play.
And then, they get the giggles,
When they’ve looked and looked some more.
Then, Mother says to Marion,
“What are we looking for?”
It isn’t just for Mother,
That our world’s a better place.
But, she has such kind compassion
And, such understanding grace.
They often walk out in the halls,
To exercise a bit.
Sometimes they sit and visit,
Maybe sometimes, they just sit.
I can hear the conversation:
“Let’s get toenails cut today.”
“But, I don’t really need to,
Let’s just cancel it, okay?”
“Are you ready with your knee highs on?”
“I don’t know where they are.”
“Let’s see if we can find them,
Where have you looked so far?”
So, they searched and searched together
’Til their time was almost gone.
Then Marion discovered
That Mother had them on.
You’ve made our lives much easier.
More than I can say.
Knowing she is in “good hands,”
While we’re so far away.
I’ve rambled on a long time.
But I just want you to see
That you are such a Blessing
To our whole family.
Mother really does look forward
To the time that you can spend.
You’re a most important person,
Lady Marion, our friend.

Senior Companions:
Serving Our Community
Read the stories below to learn more about Senior Companions and the people they serve.
Marjorie Balo
Marjorie Balo was 13 years old when she first
picked up a needle, and this would start a lifelong
love of quilting for the Tulare, S.D. native.
In 1943, she married Kenneth Balo, and settled
on a dairy farm near White, S.D. In between
milking and collecting eggs from 400 chickens,
Kenneth and Marjorie raised five daughters.
The couple retired in Arizona, where Marjorie
purchased her own quilt shop. After her husband
passed away, she moved back to South
Dakota. Surrounded by many of the quilts she
has pieced together over the years, Marjorie
is still using her creative talents to bless the
people around her.
Marjorie isn’t ready to slow down. To help her
with daily projects and tasks, she has two
Senior Companions, Lisa Raab and Sharon
Rose. Lisa and Sharon help Marjorie with Bible
lessons and meetings, reading and answering
mail, and baking. They go to the grocery store,
hardware store and Marjorie’s favorite quilt
shop. At 93 years young, and with the help of
her Companions, Marjorie continues to stitch
the threads of her life together in the beautiful
patchwork quilt called life.

Arlene White has been a Senior Companion for
15 years. She currently serves five clients in
rural Harrisburg, Tea and Canton.
One of Arlene’s clients, Grace Lamb, is 92 years
old and proudly states that she doesn’t take any
prescribed medications. She worked as a nurses’
aide at the Sioux Falls VA Hospital for 30 years.
After she retired, Grace moved to her house in
Tea, where she’s lived for 31 years.
Eleven years ago, Arlene started visiting Grace
each week on Wednesdays. They talk and have
coffee and usually a cookie or some other goodie
that Grace has baked. Then, they buy groceries.
Grace doesn’t see well, and Arlene is a big
help in the grocery store –– identifying and pulling
items off the shelves. Sometimes, when Grace
wants to shop for clothes or shoes, they travel to
Sioux Falls. Wherever they go, they always end
the visit at Grace’s home for more conversation.
When Grace was asked what she enjoyed the
most about Arlene’s visits, she replied, “the company
and companionship.” It’s important to Grace
to continue living in her house. She’s comfortable
there and knows where everything is. Arlene is
ready to help make that wish come true.
