12 Supporting Recovery

A fluid approach to the world of philanthropy
Water is a symbol of life and hope, an appropriate analogy for
philanthropy. As the world emerges from a year of dark clouds, the
Foundation Center is a source of rivers of knowledge and pools
of information, spreading far and wide. By harnessing the unique qualities
inherent in water, we stimulate growth and renewal.
From Our President
Nonprofit organizations and the foundations that support them need the best information
possible to do their vital work, and they need it now. This simple three letter word that
appears and reappears throughout this annual report best captures the spirit that drives
today’s Foundation Center.
Within hours of the devastating
earthquake in Haiti, the
Foundation Center launched
a web page filled with information
about lessons learned from disaster
relief, interviews with experts, a rapid-fire
survey of 135 foundation CEOs, and a
real-time map of philanthropy’s response.
In the first few weeks we identified more
than $20 million in grants destined for relief
and recovery in Haiti: within two months the
volume had swelled to more than $200 million. Using this
free resource, anyone could see the international and Haitian
organizations that were receiving these grants and the
foundations around the world that were giving them.
When the Secretary of Education announced $100 billion of
stimulus spending, the nation’s education funders saw it as
an opportunity to leverage their own resources,
long experience, and ideas. The American
economy was in crisis, our educational system
under severe stress, and speed was of the
essence. With support from the Charles Stewart
Mott Foundation, a web portal, Foundations for
Education Excellence, went from concept to
launch in seven weeks and serves today as an
information crossroads where foundations, the
federal government, and local school districts
can see who is doing what, where in the six
priority areas of the stimulus program: accountability, early
learning, education standards, low-performing schools,
preparation for college, and teacher quality and leadership.
As the world economic recession deepened, nonprofits
needed the best tools possible to find the resources to meet
the rising demand for their services. The Foundation Center
2 T h e F o u n d a t i o n C e n t e r

esponded by adding Power Search to Foundation Directory
Online. By writing a single word or phrase in a text box,
grantseekers can instantly search nine powerful databases
containing nearly 100,000 foundations, more than two million
grants, 5,000 research reports, news stories, and more.
Every day, I take the issues I hear on the news and use Power
Search to tell me what philanthropy is doing about them now.
Transparency is an ideal that each foundation has to pursue
according to its values and means. However, one thing seems
certain: as the practice of philanthropy is being disrupted by
the digital revolution, choosing not to be transparent is an
option whose days are numbered. If you have a public purpose,
and foundations certainly do, the public wants to know:
“What are you doing?” We created www.glasspockets.org to
show the many creative ways in which hundreds of foundations
are striving to answer that question. Any foundation
that is debating about whether to create a searchable grants
database, initiate a grantee feedback mechanism, or get its
feet wet with social media will, on Glasspockets, find plenty
of peer foundations with whom they can consult about how to
build greater transparency
At the heart of virtually everything the Foundation Center
does lies the ability to collect, classify, and research data on
foundations, the grants they make, and the nonprofits that
receive them. In l956, when the Foundation Center opened
its doors, that meant painstakingly collecting 7,000 foundation
documents in file cabinets for public inspection. In the
1960s it meant staff going to the Internal Revenue Service to
hand transcribe information from foundation tax returns and
publishing it in that massive volume, The Foundation Directory,
that launched so many fundraising careers, including my own.
Today it means convincing foundations around the world to
join the 500 that now give us their grants data electronically
so we can transform it into interactive maps—like our Google
map-based Philanthropy In/Sight—research reports and other
tools that meet the information needs of today.
The deep recession from which the world now struggles to
recover taught us just how important the work of foundations
and nonprofits can be. In the years ahead we will have
to do even better at addressing pressing global challenges.
The Foundation Center will be there with the information and
knowledge you need, when you need it . . . now.
advocating Transparency
Glasspockets.org
“We think that the foundation should have glass
pockets,” said Russell Leffingwell, Carnegie Corporation
board chair, before a McCarthy-era Congressional hearing
more than 50 years ago.
Shortly thereafter, the
Foundation Center became
the “glass pockets” through
which the public could see
into America’s foundations.
Today, our Glasspockets.org
showcases foundations that
operate in a transparent
way through their online
communications. The site
not only serves as a gateway to every piece of relevant
information foundations put on their web sites, but also
presents exemplary models for foundation peers to learn
how to best demonstrate their own transparency.
Benchmarking Diversity:
A First Look at New York
City Foundations and
Nonprofits found that the
level of racial diversity
at these organizations
decreases at higher
levels of seniority.
“We think that the foundation
should have glass pockets”
– Russell Leffingwell, Chair, Carnegie Corporation, 1952
Diversity
Does the racial makeup of staff at foundations and nonprofits
reflect the populations they serve? All answers were
pure speculation before the Foundation Center began compiling
statistics in 2008 as part of the Diversity in Philanthropy
Project. Having produced benchmark data on the national
picture and then California, we focused on the New York
City area in 2009, with other localities under consideration.
This groundbreaking data fills an important information gap
regarding current diversity practices that will inform future
decision making.
E-Grant Reporting
There is no faster way to view the most comprehensive
collection of grant records available than through the Foundation
Center’s information services, thanks to e-Grant Reporting. More
than 470 participating foundations send us information about
their recent grants so that you can read about them in real-time.
It’s another way we help foundations be transparent and provide
crucial knowledge on and for the field.
Tools and Resources for Assessing
Social Impact (TRASI)
When your goal as an agent for the common good
is to change societal conditions and is predicated on specific
actions or behavioral changes by individuals, communities,
and/or society as a whole, how do you know what success
looks like? The approach you take to learning the answer
is not one-size-fits-all, so the Foundation Center developed
TRASI in partnership with McKinsey & Company to give you
a searchable database of 150 approaches to measuring and
analyzing social impact for your programs and
investments.
Mapping Tools
When the staff and board of the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation needed a tool that would help them
achieve their goal to build economic security for
vulnerable children and their families in targeted
regions, they turned to the Foundation Center.
The custom interactive mapping application the
Center delivered
to the foundation
allows it to better
assess areas
of need, locate
prospective funding
and program
partners, and
identify potential
recipients of
their investments
toward Family
and Economic
Security.
Seeing foundations and grants arrayed on geographic maps
allows for convenient visualization of where funding—or a
gap in funding—exists.
expanding Global View
Global Philanthropy Forum
The Global Philanthropy Forum
(GPF) is a community of donors and social
investors committed to international
causes. Its annual conference supports
philanthropists who wish to be strategic
in their work advancing human security,
environmental stewardship, and improved
quality of life around the world. In 2009,
GPF chose the Foundation Center as
a partner to provide critical in-depth
information on the
conference’s main
themes, in the form
of visual presentations
and web portals
with links to essential
resources and
news coverage, lists
of sample grants
from the Center’s
database, maps of
funding, statistical
analyses, and more.
Map of Cross-Border Giving
The Foundation Center sheds light
on many issues that are beyond our
borders or know no boundaries, such
as those addressed by the Global
Philanthropy Forum.
For anyone with an interest in global issues, the ability to
see at-a-glance where and how U.S. foundations are supporting
overseas organizations is invaluable. Map of Cross-Border
Giving is a powerful visualization tool that is easy to use and
provides multiple filters that produces quick results.
Focus on Haiti
Soon after the January 10, 2010,
earthquake devastated Haiti, the foundation
community faced mass confusion—trying
to find what grants were
being awarded and what funders were
likely to do, short- and long-term, as
well as advice on where to make their
own contributions. The Foundation
Center sprang into action, immediately
posting a web portal consolidating the
news, donor activity, and preliminary
research based on a survey of our Grantmaker Leadership
Panel. As a result, timely, useful information was easily available
to anyone who needed it, and it quickly became cited by
the media as one of the key places to get the most complete
and up-to-date information available.
Overseas Funding Information Centers
For five decades, nonprofit grantseekers around the country
have relied on the Foundation Center’s funding information
centers known as Cooperating Collections as a place to start
their research. Now, nongovernmental organizations in several
far-flung locations have access to the same databases, books,
and level of professional expertise that their domestic counterparts
enjoy. In 2009, the Foundation Center established new
Collections in Australia, Brazil, Nigeria, Thailand, and Mexico,
and will continue to bring global citizens the knowledge and
training they need to become successful grantseekers.
Special Topic Research
Social Justice
The Foundation Center sheds light on many dimensions of
philanthropy, including the giving patterns within particular
fields. Social Justice Grantmaking II, released in July 2009,
provides an in-depth look at current attitudes and trends
with the hard data grantmakers and practitioners need to
strategically plan for the future. A blend of statistics and
interview results, it identifies the factors most affecting social
justice grantmaking: a changed political environment, the
success of community organizing in the recent election, and a
reinvigorated commitment to social justice. In December, we
produced a related webinar, “Obama, the Economic Crisis, and
the Persistence of Hope,” which remains available at our web
site’s Events Archive.
supporting Recovery
Throughout 2009 we all struggled to understand the long-term impact of the economic crisis on the
charitable sector, while tentatively looking for hopeful signs of recovery. Foundations and other nonprofits
took stock, made plans to weather the storm, and are taking action. The Foundation Center supports this
forward progress—and the decision making that goes with it—every step of the way, with tools and resources,
online and around the globe.
Making Informed Decisions
Five advisories released throughout 2009 by the
Foundation Center’s Research Institute assessed the
changing landscape with respect to the economic downturn.
The advisories were based on current giving data and
information we gathered from foundations about their future
plans, giving an overall picture of the state of philanthropy
and where it is likely heading. We posted this research for
free at our Focus on the Economic Crisis web portal, where
visitors also find an interactive distribution map of the
most recent foundation support to aid those affected and
Learning
The desire to expand, enhance, and refresh one’s fundraising
skills is spurred on by increased competition for scarce
funds. In fall 2009, the Foundation Center introduced a new
class, “Fundraising in a Challenging Economy,” in all five of
our regional centers. In it, nonprofits learn what they can do to
survive during an economic downturn and how to better position
themselves to thrive in a difficult fundraising environment.
“Turning Economic Crisis into Opportunity,” a four-part webinar
series, was launched in 2009 to help nonprofits see beyond
the recession and build more sustainable organizations.
increasing Access
During the recession of 2009, grantseekers
needed the Foundation Center’s help more
than ever. Our regional library/learning
centers offered special programs by guest experts,
open dialogues of grantmakers and nonprofits, and
opportunities to network and share insights, in addition
to free access to our premier funding database, The
Foundation Directory Online. 2009 saw a substantial
increase in visitors, and learning opportunities
multiplied through webinars, podcasts, and recorded
videos of on-site events.
Our new class, Fundraising in a Challenging Economy, debuted
in our New York library/learning center in 2009. It was also
presented at various events throughout the New York City
area organized by the Mayor’s office, the Brooklyn Borough
President’s Office, Bronx Borough President’s Office, and others.
Our library/learning center in Atlanta celebrated its
15-year anniversary with a special program presented by the
Foundation Center’s president, Brad Smith. Brad spoke about
the impact of the economic crisis on the philanthropic sector,
and the challenges and opportunities it presents.
