CHAPTER THREE
DESCRIPTION OF THE SOIL S
Chapter Three describes the characteristics of the 147 individual soils and 7 miscellaneous land type s
classified in the Langley-Vancouver map area . Detailed individual soil profile descriptions and chemical an d
physical analysis are not included . These are presented in Volume 6 of this report and are also available from th e
British Columbia Soil Information System .
The soils are arranged in alphabetical order and the soil map symbol is indicated in brackets after the soi l
name. For each soil, the approximate locale of the main areas in which it occurs is stated, together with the
general range in elevation, the topography, soil parent material, soil texture and soil moisture characteristics .
The usual vegetation is given where some natural cover exists . The species listed (after Taylor and MacBryde ,
1977) only indicate the general nature of the vegetation and are not intended to be complete lists of the specie s
present. Also presented is a general (representative) soil description to assist report and map users i n
identifying the soil in the field . Soil reaction (pH), except where specified otherwise, is based on measurement s
made in .01 M CaC l 2 . Brief comments related to general land use are given as is the soil classification (Canadia n
System of Soil Classification, 1978) . The most commonly associated soils are also given and brief comment i s
made on how they differ from the soil under discussion . Some technical terms may not be familiar to the reader ;
most are defined either in the Glossary or Appendices .
Several schematic, cross-sectional diagrams (Figures 3 to 10) are included to show the general landscap e
relationships between the more common soils of the map area .
