Commonly Associated Soils : Delta and Guichon soils often occur in close association with Ladner soil s
Delta soils differ from Ladner soils by being somewhat more silty in texture and lack the well-developed cla y
accumulation zone in the subsurface . Guichon soils differ by having saline, sandy material within 50 cm of thi :
surface and also lack a well-defined clay accumulation zon e
Vegetation :
The native vegetation on Ladner soils has essentially all been removed by land clearing an d
cultivation . Rooting is mainly restricted to the upper 60 cm by dense subsurface soils and high watertable s
General Land Use Comments : (1) Ladner soils are used for a variety of agricultural crops . Annual crop
generally do well since high watertables tend to recede during the growing season . Perennials, however, suff e
during winter months and artificial drainage is beneficial . Subsoiling improves water movement and rootin g
depth. Puddling is a problem and the soils should not be cultivated when wet . (2) Low or variable bearin g
strengths and high watertables limit Ladner soils for urban or .related uses . Foundations require speci a
considerations and basements or other excavations will probably contain water for at least part of the yea '
Septic tank effluent disposal is restricted by high watertables and low soil permeability . Underground install a
tions . such as utilities, require special protection from corrosion by the saline subsoils . (3) Ladner soils appe a .
moderately suited for western red cedar. Annual potential wood production by this species is estimated to be
between 6 .5 and 8 m 3lha .
poorly drained, clayey soils have developed from deltaic deposits.
They have a strongly leached grayish layer (6 to 11 in . (15 to 2 7
cm) in the photo) under the cultivated surface . This is underlain by a
clay enriched layer about 12 in . (30 cm) thick. Dark gray sand .
usually saline . is present below depths of 3 ft (90 cm) or more.
