Plate 26 A t ypical landscape in the Sumas Vii+ey D-- r vis is s r-7 associated forage (grass-clover) production is
one of the main land uses. The farmstead in the sir_ c> is located on a sandy beach ridge where well
drained Ken^r" ; s occur
Location and Extent : Ken- ecl y soils occupy small, scattered areas in the Sumas Valley where 250 n~a of pur e
nap units are mapped .
Topography and Elevation : Kennedy soils are undulating to strongly rolling with slopes mainly between 5
and 25 percent . They occupy the highest landscape positions and usually lie between 6 and 12 m above se a
leve l
Parent Material and Texture : Coarse-textured (sandy) spits, bars, beaches and similar stratified lacustrin e
posits form the parent material of Kennedy soils . Surface textures vary from loamy sand to fine sandy loa m
le subsurface and subsoil textures are usually medium or fine sand, sometimes containing thin, sandy loan -
lenses .
Soil Moisture Characteristics : Kennedy soils are well to rapidly drained . They are rapidly pervious an c
have low water holding capacity and slow surface runoff .
eneral Soil Description : Kennedy soils generally have a dark brown to reddish-brown, weakly structure d
friable, sandy surface layer about 30 cm thick which is underlain by a loose, partially leached, yellowish -
brown to pale brown sandy zone which is about 25 cm thick . This, in turn, is underlain by a zone up to 300 c m
c consisting of numerous, dark yellowish brown, friable to firm, clay enriched, sandy lamellae or bands up t o
grayish sand Soil reactions range from strongly or very strongly acid in the surface and subsurface t o
moderately acid in the lower subsoil . Soil classification is mostly Brunisolic Gray Luvisol with a few Podzoli c
