Scenario five presented a similar scenario, but <strong>the</strong> illegality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> decision to be made<br />

was not clearly given. According to <strong>the</strong> results, 52% <strong>of</strong> male respondents decided take <strong>the</strong> drug<br />

or can’t decide compared to only 35% <strong>of</strong> female respondents. Only 27% <strong>of</strong> <strong>athletic</strong> <strong>training</strong><br />

<strong>student</strong>s chose take <strong>the</strong> drug or can’t decide compared to 47% <strong>and</strong> 41% <strong>of</strong> team sport <strong>and</strong><br />

individual sport <strong>athletes</strong> respectively. The following is scenario five:<br />

Ian <strong>and</strong> William are teammates on a highly successful <strong>and</strong> competitive<br />

track team, whose high-powered <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten negative coach expects<br />

unrealistic success. Ian is in a slump <strong>and</strong> his current times are not up to <strong>the</strong><br />

coaches’ competitive st<strong>and</strong>ards. Coach has informed Ian that ei<strong>the</strong>r he will<br />

improve <strong>of</strong> he will be cut. William has overheard <strong>the</strong> conversation <strong>and</strong><br />

decided to contact Dr. Smith who has a history <strong>of</strong> helping <strong>athletes</strong> get back<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir competitive edges. Dr. Smith gives William a prescription for Ian<br />

guaranteed to help improve Ian’s performance.<br />

The differences in <strong>the</strong> frequencies between <strong>athletic</strong> <strong>training</strong> <strong>student</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>student</strong> <strong>athletes</strong> for this<br />

scenario may represent an increased ability <strong>of</strong> <strong>student</strong> <strong>athletes</strong> to personally identify with <strong>the</strong><br />

characters in <strong>the</strong> scenario. Unfortunately, scenarios such as this are all too real in <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong><br />

sport. While <strong>athletes</strong> are ultimately responsible for <strong>the</strong> substances <strong>the</strong>y consume, <strong>of</strong>ten times it is<br />

by <strong>the</strong> coercion <strong>and</strong> manipulation <strong>of</strong> an individual in a position <strong>of</strong> authority over <strong>the</strong> <strong>athletes</strong> that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y take part in <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> doping. Athletes have told stories about <strong>the</strong> process which<br />

includes a period <strong>of</strong> isolation <strong>and</strong> intense individual <strong>training</strong> periods. The individuals in authority<br />

provide information <strong>and</strong> recommendations associated with all aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>athletes</strong>’ lives<br />

during this period, including nutritional recommendations <strong>and</strong> sometimes “supplemental”<br />

substances. Although scenario five does not necessarily tell such a story, it does include an<br />
