more accessible than certified <strong>athletic</strong> trainers to <strong>student</strong> <strong>athletes</strong> with questions about such<br />

issues as doping. During a class discussion <strong>athletic</strong> <strong>training</strong> <strong>student</strong>s openly admitted that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had been approached by <strong>student</strong> <strong>athletes</strong> in <strong>the</strong> <strong>student</strong> recreation center or r<strong>and</strong>omly on campus<br />

for information about new supplements that may help improve performance. The question is,<br />

does <strong>the</strong> education received by <strong>athletic</strong> <strong>training</strong> <strong>student</strong>s properly equip <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong> necessary<br />

tools to answer questions <strong>and</strong> inquiries in an educated <strong>and</strong> <strong>moral</strong>ly reasoned manner?<br />

Certified <strong>athletic</strong> trainers are required to complete a bachelors degree in <strong>athletic</strong> <strong>training</strong><br />

from an institution with an <strong>athletic</strong> <strong>training</strong> education program accredited by <strong>the</strong> Commission for<br />

Accreditation <strong>of</strong> Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The curriculum includes foundational<br />

coursework in anatomy <strong>and</strong> physiology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human body, emergency response, structural <strong>and</strong><br />

mechanical kinesiology or biomechanics, exercise physiology <strong>and</strong> nutrition. Students are<br />

encouraged to take courses outside <strong>the</strong> program related to <strong>the</strong>ir interests that might include o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

movement studies courses or sports psychology. Usually after <strong>the</strong>ir freshman or sophomore years<br />

<strong>student</strong>s typically apply to <strong>the</strong> <strong>athletic</strong> <strong>training</strong> education program <strong>and</strong> will complete two to three<br />

years <strong>of</strong> specialized coursework including evaluation <strong>of</strong> upper <strong>and</strong> lower extremities, <strong>the</strong>rapeutic<br />

modalities, rehabilitation strategies, organization <strong>and</strong> administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>athletic</strong> <strong>training</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

During <strong>the</strong>ir time in <strong>the</strong> program <strong>student</strong>s are required to complete a certain number <strong>of</strong><br />

clinical experience hours as determined by each particular program. Most programs require<br />

around 1200 hours. During <strong>the</strong>se hours <strong>student</strong>s will have opportunities apply what <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

learned in <strong>the</strong> classroom to <strong>the</strong>ir clinical experiences while being directly supervised by a<br />

certified <strong>athletic</strong> trainer. Most programs require <strong>student</strong>s to have a variety <strong>of</strong> experiences which<br />
