ALUMNI AND DEVELOPMENT NEWS Opportunities to Engage The College of Business is offering alumni and friends new ways to connect with the College, from new and improved events across the state to the CB Alumni Association Chapter. Dean’s Leadership Celebration Sponsored by PEMCO The inaugural Dean’s Leadership Celebration was held at the Seattle Grand Hyatt on June 1 to celebrate student success, faculty excellence, and volunteer leadership in the College of Business. This event was sponsored by Pemco Insurance, Banner Bank, Horizon Air, and LeMaster & Daniels PLLC. At the event, Jerry Burtenshaw (’56 Hotel Restaurant Administration) was honored with the second Dean’s Distinguished Leadership Award for exemplary leadership, philanthropy, and service to the College, including establishing the Burtenshaw Lecture Series and the Calvin Brett Burtenshaw Memorial Scholarship with his wife Angelina. “Jerry Burtenshaw has been instrumental in helping the school enhance its quality and national image through his leadership and financial support,” says Terry Umbreit, director of the School of Hospitality Business Management. “I can’t think of a more deserving person for this award—he has made a huge difference in the live of so many students.” After Scott Carson (’72 Business Administration) spoke to attendees about the importance of volunteer leadership, Dean Eric Spangenberg presented Scott and wife Linda Carson with an engraved chair to commemorate the establishment of the Boeing Scott and Linda Carson Endowed Chair in marketing. “This event was a wonderful way to recognize and thank our outstanding students, faculty, and donors,” says Spangenberg. “It was the beginning of a great CB tradition.” The second annual Dean’s Leadership Celebration is scheduled for May 17, 2007 in Seattle. Celebration of Student Excellence On April 7, CB faculty, staff, and donors joined students and their families in Pullman for the annual Celebration of Student Excellence, recognizing outstanding CB students, scholarship recipients, and other student honorees. This year’s event included a greater focus on scholarships to recognize the increasing number and variety of scholarships available (see story on page 48). For the first time, scholarship donors were invited to meet the students benefiting from their generosity. Accounting Fraud Symposium This year’s Accounting Fraud Symposium, held April 28 in Pullman, focused on fraud in government, with speakers from the Government Accountability Office, Washington State Auditors Office, Washington Department of Revenue, and Washington State University. Although this is the fourth symposium held by the department of accounting, this is the first year symposium attendees were eligible to receive Continuing Professional Education credit. “The symposium provided a great venue for students, faculty, and professionals in the industry to learn how fraud is committed or prevented, and how savvy accountants employ a variety of investigative and technological techniques to detect it,” says Bob Greenberg, professor and former chair of the Department of Accounting.
