6. If a family’s composition has grown due to the addition of children thorough birth,<br />
adoption or court awarded custody, such that the family exceeds the occupancy<br />
guidelines for the largest unit available at a site, the family can be offered a split<br />
transfer into two units. Each new family must have as its head at least one adult<br />
listed on the most recent lease (1 must be the original head of household) and each<br />
head of household must be legally capable of executing a lease.<br />
7. A dependent may not reside with more than one family at a time. The family that has<br />
the primary custody, the family with whom the dependent lives more than 50% of the<br />
time, shall be the dependent’s family for the purpose of determining income,<br />
deductions, and the appropriate size of the apartment.<br />
8. All requests for exceptions to the occupancy standards must be submitted in writing.<br />
9. In the case of a request for exception as a reasonable accommodation, the PHA will<br />
encourage the resident to make the request in writing using a reasonable<br />
accommodation request form. However, the PHA will consider the exception request<br />
any time the resident indicates that an accommodation is needed whether or not a<br />
formal written request is submitted.<br />
10. Requests for a larger size unit must explain the need or justification for the larger<br />
size unit, and must include appropriate documentation.<br />
11. Requests based on health-related reasons must be verified by a knowledgeable<br />
professional source, unless the disability and the disability-related request for<br />
accommodation is readily apparent or otherwise known.<br />
12. The PHA will notify the family of its decision within 20 business days of receiving the<br />
family’s request.<br />
