61-mile length a stand-out adventure. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Strait</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Juan</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Fuca</strong> connects the Paci�c Ocean with Puget Sound,<br />

1. Elwha Bridge & Elwha River Restoration/Elwha<br />

Dam Removal Area<br />

<strong>The</strong> Elwha River can be viewed while crossing the newly replaced<br />

Elwha Bridge (just north <strong>of</strong> SR112) on Elwha River Road. It inclu<strong>de</strong>s<br />

a pe<strong>de</strong>strian <strong>de</strong>ck suspen<strong>de</strong>d below the vehicle <strong>de</strong>ck. <strong>The</strong> river was<br />

once home to famous runs <strong>of</strong> Chinook salmon. In 2011, removal will<br />

begin on the Elwha and Glines Dams and will continue for up to<br />

2. Olympic Discovery Trail Adventure Route<br />

<strong>The</strong> Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT) is a non-motorized, multiuser<br />

transportation/recreation system that will eventually span the<br />

Olympic Peninsula. One portion, connecting SR112 at the Elwha River<br />

with Lake Crescent, is the Adventure Route. It is three feet wi<strong>de</strong> with<br />

a dirt and gravel surface and inten<strong>de</strong>d for use by equestrians, hikers,<br />

3. Freshwater Bay County Park<br />

<strong>The</strong> launch ramp for small boats, saltwater beach access and lower<br />

picnic area are open year round. <strong>The</strong> 17-acre day-use park has an<br />

upper picnic area located in a natural cedar forest, with covered<br />

picnic shelters. This area is open from May to Sept.<br />

4. Salt Creek Recreation Area<br />

Salt Creek inclu<strong>de</strong>s the Tongue Point Marine Life Sanctuary, diving<br />

sites, a saltwater beach, playground, ti<strong>de</strong>pools and hiking trails to<br />

Striped Peak. Originally a World War II harbor <strong>de</strong>fense site, the<br />

remnants <strong>of</strong> Fort Hay<strong>de</strong>n are preserved on the 196-acre site. <strong>The</strong> park<br />

has 90 campsites, accessible showers and rest rooms, and an RV<br />

5. Joyce General Store & Depot Museum<br />

This historic landmark is a favorite supply stop for locals and<br />

tourists. It still has many original fixtures from back in the day. It<br />

continues its service as a US Post Office, with many <strong>of</strong> the features<br />

from its beginnings a century ago. Open seven days a week year<br />

round. Call (360) 928-3568 for more information. <strong>The</strong> Joyce Depot<br />

Museum is east <strong>of</strong> the store in a former railroad station. It exhibits<br />

items from the 1920s through the 1940s. <strong>The</strong> museum is open every<br />

Saturday year round (exten<strong>de</strong>d days in summer). (MP 50-51)<br />

6. Pillar Point County Park<br />

This woo<strong>de</strong>d 4-acre day-use park has a sandy beach with a concrete<br />

launch ramp for small boats. Check ti<strong>de</strong>s before launching:<br />

w.saltwaterti<strong>de</strong>s.com/. Great for crabbing, shell fishing and photography.<br />

<strong>Scenic</strong> views <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Strait</strong>, the Pysht River estuary and the imposing<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> Pillar Point. (MP 29-30)<br />

7. Clallam Bay Spit County Park<br />

On 33 acres on a saltwater beach, this day-use park inclu<strong>de</strong>s public access<br />

to the Clallam Spit and a mile-long sand and gravel beach, access to the<br />

Clallam River, picnic sites, accessible rest rooms, an interpretive display<br />

8. Lake Ozette<br />

<strong>The</strong> area around Lake Ozette is part <strong>of</strong> Olympic National Park and can<br />

only be reached by car from SR112. <strong>The</strong> lake is the third-largest and<br />

second-<strong>de</strong>epest in the state <strong>of</strong> Washington. It <strong>of</strong>fers boating, hiking and<br />

camping and is also the trailhead to a 9-mile cedar boardwalk loop to<br />

the Pacific shoreline, up the coast and back to the lake. Be aware <strong>of</strong><br />

ti<strong>de</strong>s (www.saltwaterti<strong>de</strong>s.com/) and visit www.nps.gov/olympic for<br />

back country rules and tips for visitors. (Turn at MP 12-13 and drive to<br />

the end <strong>of</strong> Hoko-Ozette Road.)<br />

9. Sail and Seal Rocks (Sea Stacks)<br />

<strong>The</strong>se twin <strong>of</strong>fshore rocks are feeding grounds for gray whales; sea birds<br />

can also be seen. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Strait</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Juan</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Fuca</strong> connects Puget Sound to the<br />

Pacific Ocean. Exceptionally scenic, with complex rocky shorelines, and<br />

s<strong>of</strong>t northwest light and water. A photographer’s dream! (MP 1)<br />

10. Neah Bay and the Makah Tribe<br />

Enjoy camping, sports fishing, sightseeing in the surrounding wil<strong>de</strong>rness,<br />

discovering the ancient Makah heritage at the Makah Cultural and<br />

Research Center (open 7 days/week), hiking to Shi Shi Beach in Olympic<br />

National Park. <strong>The</strong> Cape Flattery trail is a 3/4-mile cedar-planked<br />

boardwalk to a view <strong>of</strong> the Tatoosh Island Lighthouse. www.makah.com<br />
