This spring, juniors are recommended to begin taking
the ACT and SAT college entrance exams. College
entrance exams are required for admission for colleges
and universities.
Juniors should start taking the exams now so they
will have an opportunity to retake the exams during the
fall of their senior year, if they choose.
It also allows them to focus on applications for
colleges and scholarships instead of worrying about the
ACT and SAT.
Colleges begin accepting applications Aug. 1 of the
senior year, so entrance exams should be completed by
that time.
Juniors can prepare for SAT and ACT by taking
prep review courses offered by the district. Students
should see their counselor for more information on prep
courses and materials. The remaining dates are listed
Terry High to be featured at national convention
Continuing to shine, Terry
High was recognized for
increasing academic performance
B.F. Terry High School is one of only 17 high-performing middle level and high schools across the nation
selected to present at the annual “Breaking Ranks” 2012 School Showcase on March 8 in Tampa, Fla. as
part of the NASSP Breaking Ranks K-12 Conference.
The showcase will gather school leaders, teachers and students from the nation’s top middle and high
schools to discuss effective practices, programs and strategies with their colleagues from across the country.
Schools are chosen to present on the basis of their outstanding reputations for quality and innovative
practices with challenging populations.
At the showcase, these schools will share stories of implementing the “Breaking Ranks” framework
for school improvement created by NASSP. Dr. Vera Wehring, principal at Terry High, will present a 90-minute
interactive presentation that will outline where the school started, what they did to improve their situation and
where they’re headed in the future.
The Path to Success
Wehring will ask the audience to view a short video that reveals the school pride evident at Terry. Semone
Galloway was a member of the yearbook staff in 2010, and she recited the opening for the yearbook that
demanded people take another look at Terry High.
They are no longer the “ghetto” school, Galloway said, and she dared people to look and see that the
students at Terry were achieving their goals and was the school others looked to for excellence.
Wehring will also chart the path to success, starting in 2005 and 2006 when the school’s testing scores
were low. To raise those expectations and ratings, a variety of positive methods were implemented, including
mentoring students, using teen leadership, having teachers trained in “Capturing Kids Hearts” and using
Region 4 math and the Dana Center science consultants to help bolster teaching methods.
Teachers also used collaborative leadership and curriculum instruction assessment to help them meet
the academic needs of the students. They incorporated common planning, formal observations, data collection
and the use of educational tools such as thinking maps, into their daily instructional plan. Teachers also took
advantage of new technology, such as Promethean Boards, to bolster understanding in the classroom. Each
teacher and administrator wrote and posted commitment statements as to what they were willing to do to help
each student succeed.
Reaching Goals
The result of using these tools is remarkable. Terry went from having a 94.5 percent attendance rate
in 2005 to a 96-plus attendance rate in 2011, and test scores have steadily risen. They also had 229 advanced
placement tests given, more than any other year.
As Galloway stated in her video, it’s time to take another look at Terry High School, Wehring will tell the
audience. The rest of the country is paying attention to Terry High School, believes Wehring, and it’s because
of a successful combination of teacher and staff collaborations and student engagement.
The Rangers are like the little engine in the children’s story of “The Little Engine That Could. The book
sits prominently on Wehring’s credenza because she knows the lesson the little engine learned is the same as
what she, her staff and her students came to understand – with the help of others, “I thought I could.”
In May, a list of the courses
selected will be mailed home for
review by students and parents.
Changes can be made at that time,
and the course selection list needs
to be returned to the counselor.
Teykl Selected to Coach in All-American Bowl
On Saturday, Jan. 7, 90
of the nation’s top high school
football players played in the Alamodome
for the annual United
States Army All-American Bowl.
Sixteen of the nation’s most
respected high school coaches
were on the sidelines, coaching
these athletes. One of the
16 selected was B.F. Terry High
School’s head football coach and
campus athletic coordinator, Tim
Coach Tim Teykl Teykl.
“This is an opportunity of a
lifetime,” said Teykl. “To meet and coach today’s top
high school football players and tomorrow’s college and
NFL greats is, without question, a water-mark moment.”
With 30-plus years of experience, his track record
is enviable – he’s taken the Terry Rangers to 13 playoff
berths and has more wins than any other coach in
Terry’s history and in Lamar CISD’s history.
He’s been named the district coach of the year
and the Houston Texans coach of the week. He was
also a finalist for the Texans’ coach of the year award.
Teykl is a past winner of the prestigious Tom
Landry award and was a two-time finalist for the AFCA
Power of Influence Award.
He was the president-elect finalist for the THSCA
and has served on their board of directos. He was the
past president of the Greater Houston Football Coaches
Association and is a board member and executive
board member of that organization.
Teykl has been the head coach of another all-star
football game, the Bayou Bowl in Baytown. He was also
on the steering committee to organize the event and
was the bowl’s game director as well as the head coach
of Team Texas.
He’s coached on three back-to-back Lone Star
Conference Championship coaching staffs and twice
on the back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championship
coaching staff. One of his fondest coaching
experiences was being part of the 1984 staff at Texas
Christian University.
Teykl is past president of the Texas State 7-on-7
Association and is a board member for that organization.
The Bowl Game
Over the 11 years the game has been played,
hundreds of outstanding high school athletes have
had the opportunity to showcase their skills on national
television.
Over 140 players chosen for the matchup have
been drafted into the NFL, including Derrick Johnson,
Vince Young, Reggie Bush and Joe McKnight.
The game also honors nearly 1,000 Army Strong
Soldier heroes, a recognition that touches Teykl’s heart.
He has vivid memories of looking at photos of his
father taken while his dad was stationed in Korea. A
number of his players have gone on to serve in the U.S.
Army, and many have graduated from the United States
Military Academy or played for West Point.
The long-time coach is a native of Needville and
holds a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education
and recreation from Texas A&M University and a
master’s degree in education from Southwest Texas
State University. He and his wife, Brenda, the registrar
at Terry, are residents of Rosenberg.
They are the parents of two grown children, daughter
Tory who’s director for sorts marketing, promotions
and sales at the University of Houston and son Tyler
who’s a senior at Purdue University, majoring in chemical
engineering.
Dear Ranger Family:
It’s a new year, and with the new year comes
the annual ritual of making New Year’s resolutions.
I’d like to suggest a few Ranger Resolutions – please
encourage your teen to continue making good choices
and sound decisions. Remind them that coming to
school on time and every day is the path to success.
Perhaps they can make a resolution to take advantage
of resources in place to help them continue to be successful,
including attending the after-school Ranger
Success Center.
Here, they can receive one-on-one tutoring,
work in groups and have access to the school computers
and equipment. Best of all, we have a school bus to
take them home at 4:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Although resolutions are promises for the
future, sometimes the present can deal unexpected
blows. That’s where our resiliency comes through. The
Ranger family has weathered some unexpected losses
in the fall semester.
One of our trainers, Mr. Donald “Doc” Arceneaux,
passed away following an extended illness.
We unfortunately lost three of our students unexpectedly.
There were other stressful situations we faced,
including an ongoing recession and tough times for our
families.
Through these sad occasions, the Ranger family
held each other up and came out stronger and more
committed to continuing to reach our goals.
The feeling of rejuvenation that came with the
start of the 2012 year is felt every single day at Terry
High. Our students are working hard to conquer the
TAKS and STARR tests, and having our “Math Word
of the Day” highlighted in classrooms and on our daily
broadcasting show reinforces the importance of math in
every-day life.
Our students received novels, and those who
answer questions about what’s happening in the book
win prizes. Seeing our students reading after they’ve
finished their class work, in the library or quietly in the
halls before class makes my day.
Our athletes earn state-wide recognition and
our school continues to receive national praise and
honors. Recently I was asked to speak at the March
2012 School Showcase as part of the NASSP Breaking
Ranks K-12 Conference.
We made national headlines when the NASSP
named us one of 12 breakthrough schools across the
United States for setting new standards and goals. Now
we’ll share our path to success with educators from
almost every state in the country.
As we set our sights on spring, that feeling of
rejuvenation and commitment to resolutions continues
to strengthen and, as always, we are the Rangers!
Leading the Way!
Copies of transcripts
are available in the registrar’s
office at Terry High School.
A transcript includes the semester
grades and available
standardized testing information
(TAKS, PSAT, PLAN,
SAT, ACT) for a student
while enrolled in high school.
Transcripts are permanently
kept for any student who
attended Terry High School
and earned semester grades.
There are two types of
transcripts: official and unofficial.
Official transcripts have
been signed, stamped, and
are in a sealed envelope.
Colleges and most employers
require official transcripts.
Unofficial transcripts are
open.
Requests for transcripts
must be made in writing — in
person on the form available,
by fax (832-223-3411), or
by email (bteykl@lcisd.org).
This is to ensure the confidentiality
of the document
and request.
Also, once a person
is 18 years old and out of
school, parents can no
longer request transcripts for
their child; the person must
make his/her own request.
If someone other than the
requester is to pick it up, we
must have written permission
from the requester.
There is no charge for
this service, and multiple
copies (within reason!) of a
transcript can be requested.
For example, if a student
knows he/she will apply to
five colleges, request five
official and one unofficial
transcripts. However, 24-hour
notice must be given for the
request.
If you have any questions
about transcripts
or VOEs, please contact
Brenda Teykl, the registrar, at
832-223-3420.
VOE (Ve r i f i c at i o n o f En r o l l m e n t)
Forero Honored
Retirees
Stacy Forero, a Spanish teacher, was honored
by Stanford University in their annual “Teacher
Tribute Initiative.
Over the summer, members of Stanford’s
incoming class were given the opportunity to acknowledge
a former teacher or mentor who played
a significant role in their intellectual, academic,
social and personal development. Forero was
nominated by Terry High graduate and current
Stanford student Vanessa Friedemann.
In her nomination form, Friedemann wrote,
“Stacy Forero has an upbeat, energetic personality
that brings life to her classroom, and a rare
combination of intelligence and common sense.
She also possesses the uncanny ability to relate
to virtually any student, regardless of his or her
background. She saw me not as work but as an
individual; and by taking the time to get to know
me as a person, she earned my respect and my
trust. I know I speak for many others when I say
that I feel blessed to consider her both a teacher
and a friend.”
Forero received a certificate from Stanford
and was honored at the December staff meeting.
Janice Noonan, left, and Beverly Burns both retired at the end of December.
Santa’s Helpers
Teachers and staff donated toiletries, gift cards, books, video games,
cologne, perfume, candy, socks, gloves and other items for selected
students in what has become a holiday tradition at the school. Teachers
sent in names of students they felt needed a bit of extra holiday
cheer to “Santa’s Angels,” Amanda Hudson and Julia Worley, and
the two went shopping. They were able to assemble holiday bags for
all 58 students. Hudson said the Ranger family was “overwhelmingly
thoughtful and generous” and students who received the gifts were
thankful and appreciative.
return for permission to participate in the groups.
For many years, LCISD has contracted with DePelchin’s Children Center
to provide free counseling services for our students. The DePelchin
S.T.A.R. Program conducts small, short-term counseling groups during the
school day with our Terry students. The groups meet once a week (approximately
45 minutes) for several weeks.
In past years, the DePelchin Therapists have conducted counseling groups
on the topics of anger management, impulse control, healthy and unhealthy
coping skills, dealing with grief and more. The THS staff is asked
to help us identify students who may benefit from these sessions. Then,
the students are given a packet for their parent/guardian to complete and
In addition to group counseling, DePelchin therapists counsel students individually on a wide range of issues. If
you feel your child is in need of group or individual counseling, please contact your child’s counselor.
You are required to take a basic
assessment test for Reading, Writing,
and Math Skills before enrolling in
classes at any Texas public community
college, public technical college,
or public university.
This test is not an admissions
test, and you cannot be denied
admission to a public institution of
higher education based on your
score. The colleges will require you
to be assessed with one of the following
tests: COMPASS, ASSET,
ACCUPLACER, or THEA.
Check with the Texas colleges
you are interested in about which test
you will need to take.
You can be exempt from these
tests if you:
- Have an ACT composite score
of 23, with a minimum of 19 on both
English and math tests; or
- Have an SAT combined critical
reading and math score of 1070, with
a minimum of 500 on both critical
reading and math tests; or
- Score 2200 on Exit-level Math
TAKS, and score 2200 on Exit-level
the course selection presentation in the Social Studies
classes.
The PLAN Test is a pre-ACT test which is an
achievement test measuring skills in reading, writing,
math, and science. This test also provides individual
career inventory information based on the student’s
responses.
The 2011-12 Yearbook is...
ALL COLOR!!
Yes, that’s right! For the first time in Terry history, the 2011-12 yearbook is an all-color
books -- pictures, sports, choir - all color! Best of all, the price stays the same - $65. The book
covers all the highlights of the year from Homecoming to Spirit Week to class photos. The
yearbook will arrive in May so students can have their friends sign in the book, and a summer
supplement (that fits right in the book) wraps up the end-of-the-year events.
You can order your ALL-COLOR yearbook online at www.smart-pay.com. You can get
your student’s name on the front, icons, covers and much, much more!
Parents -- ads for your student are due early this year -- the deadline is February 15!!
Email Mrs. Adams at deadams@lcisd.org to reserve your spot. If you want to pay in installments,
email deadams@lcisd.org as well.
All-State Choir Members
All-State Choir Members are seniors Eric Gonzales
and Carolyn Castillo.
The B.F. Terry Choir had two students audition at
the Area level Saturday, Jan. 7 in Rockport. Both students,
Carolyn Castillo and Eric Gonzales, were selected
to perform in the All State Mixed choir in February.
These students have been rehearsing since June
on their audition music, and after advancing through
four rounds of competition, are now members of the
2012 Texas All State Mixed Choir.
Students who earn the distinction of being an All-
State Choir member spend four days rehearsing and
developing their vocal skills at the Texas Music Educators
Association Conference in February in San Antonio.
The week culminates in a performance of each of the
All-State choirs – the Men’s Choir, the Women’s Choir
and the Mixed Choir.
In Texas, the All-State Choir audition process begins
with approximately 20,000 students in September
and is narrowed down to 250.
It is an outstanding accomplishment to earn a spot
in the Texas All-State choir said Choral Director Rhonda
Klutts. In addition to receiving the honor and recognition
for being the best choral and band students in the state,
these students are given special consideration when
auditioning for college music scholarships.
Students grow tremendously in their musical skills
and understanding of determination and hard work as
they participate in the process. These skills are not
only useful on stage or in the classroom but also in any
endeavor these students choose to take in life.
Making the All State ensemble (choir, band, orchestra)
is the highest honor that a Texas high school
musician can earn and is a highly sought-after honor.
This is Castillo’s third year to make the All State
choir and Gonzales’ first year to make it. Both are
seniors and recently the two had the lead roles in the
school musical “Hairspray.”
“They are truly two blessed musicians with an
incredible gift of music,” said Klutts.
The spring semester is in full swing
and there is much to be done if you are a
graduating senior.
It’s not too late to apply for college
admissions. Every senior should apply to
a community college or university. Education
should not stop at Terry High School.
Please stop by the College/Career Center
in room 501 if you need assistance
with the application process.
All seniors should be applying for
the many scholarships available to you
in your Naviance account. Remember to
log into your account for all scholarships
available.
For all the seniors who have completed
their college applications or signed
with the military; remember to bring by a
copy of your acceptance letter or signing
papers, and any scholarship award letters,
to the College/Career Center. I want
to share your good news with all Terry
Rangers.
Seniors on Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
in the Terry library, “Fill out the FAFSA,”
night will take place.Financial Aid representatives
from WCJC will be on hand to
assist you and your parents in completing
the FAFSA form.
You must bring your parents’ completed
taxes and W2 forms. Students if
you file taxes, you will need to bring your
tax information also. This is a free service,
and all seniors attending college should
complete the FAFSA application.
Juniors: The time is now to take
the ACT and SAT tests. You have access
to free test preparation in your Naviance.
Use this service! It is a great way to help
you prepare for the ACT &SAT.
If you do not remember how to access
your Naviance account, stop by the
College/Career Center in room 501 for
assistance.
All juniors should take the SAT and
ACT at least twice before the end of their
junior year. When signing up for the test,
remember to have your scores sent to the
colleges you are thinking of attending. Both
tests allow up to four universities to have
scores submitted to free of charge.
If you do not do this at the time of
registering for the test, you will be charged
a fee to send them later; so make sure
you request scores to be sent at the time
of registration. Taking the SAT & ACT during
your junior year will give you the opportunity
to apply for college early.
August 1 is the official day universities
make their applications available to
incoming freshman. Make sure you are
eligible to apply early by taking the ACT
and SAT before the end of your junior
year.
In your spare time, start writing your
college application essays. Have your
English teacher proof read it so you will
have your essay ready for the application.
Sophomores: All of you have access
to Naviance and should be checking
out careers and colleges as well as
using the SAT/ACT test preparation.
Under the college tab in your Naviance
account, there is a link called enrichment
programs; check it out!
This link lists summer programs that
are available all over the U.S. Start looking
now to see if there is a summer program
you may want to attend.
Freshman: You are not forgotten. I
will be introducing you to Naviance in the
very near future.
It is time for you to also start thinking
about your future and where you want
to continue your education after Terry High
School. If you have time, feel free to stop
by the College/Career Center and ask
about Naviance. I will be glad to show you
how to access this wonderful College/Career
tool at any time.
If you have not joined a club at Terry
or have not started volunteering in the
community, the time to start is now. All college
applications ask for information on
clubs you have participated in and where
you have volunteered.
Make sure you are able to complete
this part of the application by getting involved
now. It could be the difference between
being accepted to your favorite college
or not.
