Faith-Based Programme - a Christian-based programme available to<br />

lower security prisoners generally in the last 18 months of their<br />

sentence. It is provided with Prison Fellowship. The programme can<br />

currently accommodate 60 prisoners, based in the Faith Based Unit at<br />

Rimutaka.<br />

Māori Therapeutic Programmes – combines cognitive behavioural<br />

therapy <strong>and</strong> Tikanga Māori concepts to facilitate change in the<br />

behaviour of Māori prisoners. Available to 60 prisoners at each of the<br />

following Māori Focus Units: Hawke‟s Bay, Waikeria,<br />

Tongariro/Rangipo, Rimutaka <strong>and</strong> Wanganui. The programme is also<br />

delivered at Northl<strong>and</strong> Prison.<br />

Saili Matagi Programme – a violence prevention programme targeted<br />

to Pacific adult male offenders. This programme can be accessed by<br />

12 people at one time, <strong>and</strong> sits within the 44-bed Pacific Focus Unit (or<br />

Vaka Fa‟aola) at Spring Hill.<br />

Focus Programme – to help young prisoners to acknowledge their<br />

offending <strong>and</strong> to learn how to break the offending cycle. The<br />

programme is undertaken within Youth Units based at Christchurch<br />

Men‟s (40), Hawke‟s Bay (30) <strong>and</strong> Waikeria (35) 8 .<br />

Violence Prevention Programme – to assist prisoners to live their lives<br />

without violence. The programme focuses on controlling violent<br />

impulses <strong>and</strong> conflict resolution. 30 prisoners can access this<br />

programme within the Violence Prevention Unit at Rimutaka. The<br />

programme also includes follow-up support on release.<br />

Drug Treatment Programmes – directed to prisoners, with identified<br />

alcohol <strong>and</strong> drug-related needs, who demonstrate high recidivism<br />

rates. The 24-week programmes are undertaken in Drug-Treatment<br />

Units at Waikeria, Christchurch Men‟s, Hawkes Bay, Rimutaka,<br />

Arohata, <strong>and</strong> Spring Hill. In 2009, Corrections received further funding<br />

for three additional drug treatment units. New units opened in Otago<br />

<strong>and</strong> Auckl<strong>and</strong> in 2010 <strong>and</strong> another in Whanganui will be operational<br />

from 2011. The Department of Corrections has noted that the addition<br />

of these new units will increase the number of prisoners who can be<br />

treated from 500 to 1,040 every year.<br />

Special Treatment Unit-Rehabilitative Programmes (STU-RP) –<br />

directed to high-risk male prisoners. These programmes are based on<br />

cognitive, behavioural <strong>and</strong> prevention therapies. 40 prisoners can be<br />

accommodated in both Waikeria (Karaka) <strong>and</strong> Spring Hill (Puna Tatari).<br />

In 2009, a further unit was established at Christchurch (Matapuna).<br />

The three units also include an adult sex offender treatment<br />

programme treating ten participants per year.<br />

8 A fourth youth unit at Rimutaka is currently not operational as all youth prisoners are<br />

accommodated in the other units.<br />
