Rimutaka that allowed some individual instances of corruption to occur<br />

(Patten, 2008). In 2009, Rimutaka prison had a female officer suspended<br />

after allegations of a prisoner liaison (Fitzsimons, 2009) <strong>and</strong>, in 2011, a senior<br />

manager pleaded guilty to drug offences, including cannabis cultivation (The<br />

Dominion Post, 2011).<br />

The establishment of the Professional St<strong>and</strong>ards Unit is a commendable step.<br />

This Unit started work in November 2007, <strong>and</strong> by 2009 had investigated 67<br />

cases. In February 2009, The Press highlighted that a quarter of all<br />

complaints against Corrections staff, dealt with by the Professional St<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

Unit, resulted in disciplinary action (Houlahan, 2009). There is some debate<br />

on whether the Unit should be fully independent of Corrections, to mirror the<br />

Independent Police Conduct Authority.<br />
