ALIEN LIfE ON MARS?
As we write these very words, the automobile-sized Curiosity
probe, designed and run by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
landed on the surface of Mars, beginning a new chapter in the
exploration of another world. Mars has long held a fascination for
mankind, especially the possibility of intelligent life—or any kind
of life—on the red planet.
In our cover story, Jason McClellan outlines the full history of
the search and dream of life on Mars, from the famous controversy
of the “Martian canals” in the second half of the nineteenth
century, which inspired the American astronomer Percival Lowell
to build a state-of-the-art observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, to
long-held controversies of the “Face on Mars” in the Cydonia
region of the planet, as well as other curious surface anomalies.
Our second cover feature explores a timely issue rarely covered
in the ufological literature, that of “Islam and UFOs: Searching for

SETI Alien Hunter Jill Tarter Steps Down
Officials at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute in
Mountain View, California, recently announced the retirement of Jill Tarter, the
director of the Center for SETI Research.
Tarter, who reportedly served as the inspiration for Jodie Foster’s character,
Dr. Ellie Arroway, in the novel and movie, Contact, has spent thirty-five years
scanning the skies for extraterrestrial
radio signals. Although she stepped
down from her former position,
Space.com reported that Tarter has
become a full-time fundraiser for
SETI. Full-time fundraising hardly
sounds like retirement, and she
admits that she does not particularly
enjoy fundraising. But with the
Institute’s need to raise two million
dollars every year to continue
operating, Tarter feels that fundraising
is crucial to SETI’s survival.
Lately, SETI efforts have been
fortunate to receive widespread,

positive media coverage. The
Institute’s involvement with researching new planets recently discovered by
NASA’s Kepler space telescope has garnered attention for SETI. As Tarter
explained to Space.com, “The Kepler worlds are really legitimizing SETI. All of
us that are even peripherally involved with that are looking and saying, ‘You
know, Earth 2.0 — that’s just right around the corner. We can almost taste it.’”
National Geographic Premieres Chasing UFOs
The National Geographic
Channel announced Chasing
UFOs, a new eight-part
series that follows a team
of investigators as they
searched for the truth behind
unexplained UFO sightings.
The network’s website
announced: “Can this team
use science and technology
to explain mysterious
sightings or will the evidence
truly be out of this world?
The Chasing UFOs team.
These burning questions
motivate the Chasing UFOs investigative team to travel far and probe deep
into a number of strange encounters previously left unanswered.”
The show’s investigation team includes veteran UFO researcher James Fox,
research scientist Ben McGee, and Erin Ryder of Destination Truth.
How does this show differ from other UFO-related programs on TV?
National Geographic explains, “With its combination of adventure, travel and
hard-hitting science, this series offers a radical new spin on this unexplained
phenomenon.”
Chasing UFOs premiered Friday, June 29, and the eight-episode season
concluded on August 17. The show met with harsh criticism from many UFO
researchers who felt it focused more on fabricated drama, rather than on
the actual research. National Geographic has not announced whether or not
Chasing UFOs will return for a second season.
Missouri Residents
Witness Multiple UFOs
Strange light over Blue Springs, Missouri
During the month of May, residents
in Blue Springs, Missouri, saw
multiple UFOs in the night sky. The
objects were described as bright
hovering orbs that changed color.
A witness even claimed to have
seen one of the orbs rapidly drop in
altitude. Other witnesses described a
zig-zag behavior and have observed
these objects disappearing and
reappearing. Some sources indicated
the lights were seen in nearby
Independence, Missouri as well.
According to KCTV5, Kansas
City’s local news channel, Missouri
MUFON investigated the sightings.
Assistant State Director Margie Kay
interviewed witnesses and then set
up telescopes to observe the lights
for herself. Her initial assumption
upon viewing the first light was that
it was the bright star Vega—the
brightest star in the constellation
Lyra. But as other similar lights
appeared in the sky, Kay was
stumped. After reassessing her
opinion, she told KCTV5, “I don’t
think it’s a planet at this point. I don’t
know what it is. It’s unidentified.”
KCTV5 contacted local police,
but the police reportedly received
no calls about the mysterious lights.
KCTV5 also contacted the FAA, but
was redirected to the North American
Aerospace Defense Command
(NORAD), where a spokesperson
confirmed that a similar sighting had
been reported, but the objects were
not identified.

Human Settlements on Mars in 2023?
Private space company Mars One’s goal is to establish a human colony
on Mars by April 2023. The plan calls for four astronauts to be sent on a
one-way trip to Mars, with new teams of four astronauts arriving every

two years following. The aggressive timeline established by the company
details plans to land a supply ship on Mars in October 2016. A robotic
rover will land in 2018 with the goal of exploring the planet for the best
location to establish the first colony. Living units, life support units, and
storage units will be sent to the planet in 2021, at which time, rovers will
move everything into place and prepare the colony for the astronauts’
arrival in 2023.
Whether Mars One will find people willing to sign up for a one-way
ticket to Mars is unknown, but according to the company’s website, they
have already received “many emails” from people wanting to sign up. The
company claims this mission to Mars will be the “biggest media event in
history.” And it appears the company plans to rely heavily on the media,
almost to the point of making the mission into a reality TV show. Mars One
explained that, because these astronauts will be Earth’s representatives
on Mars, “it is so crucial to have them chosen by the population of the
world.” In true reality TV fashion, humans will be able to vote for his or her
favorite contestant. During astronaut training, the company claims that “all
broadcast footage will be live, so that everyone can watch their favorite
candidate and all participants are portrayed equally and objectively.”
Nobel Prize winner Dr. Gerard ‘t Hooft is an ambassador for Mars One,
and he thinks the company’s mission is “an extraordinarily daring initiative
by people with vision and imagination.” He also thinks that this mission is
“the only way to fulfill dreams of mankind’s expansion into space.”
Mars One is not accepting astronaut candidates just yet. But when they
are ready (they are shooting for 2013), an announcement will be made on
their website.
UFOs Over Muskegon
Lake in Michigan
Multiple witnesses reportedly
witnessed UFOs over Muskegon
Lake in Michigan on the evening of
Saturday, May 26.
According to the Muskegon
Chronicle, witness Michael White
photographed two lights over the
lake at approximately 9:45 p.m.
The two orange UFOs were seen
hovering in the sky, and were
completely silent. White described
that he watched the objects moving,
but then they “stopped and hovered
then shot away at an extremely fast
rate of speed.”

Another individual reportedly
witnessed the lights in the sky, but
only saw them hovering in the sky
and slowly disappearing from sight.
The Muskegon Chronicle
contacted local police and the U.S.
Coast Guard. Neither the police
nor the coast guard received any
reports about these lights in the
sky. But coast guard petty officer
Ronnie Mason explained to the
Chronicle that UFOs around water
are sometimes caused by “light
reflecting off boats’ windshields
during sunset, or lights on boats
when it gets dark.” However, based
on witness testimony related to this
latest sighting, these UFOs have
Mason “stumped.”

NASA Scientists May Have Discovered Life on Titan
NASA scientists may have
discovered life on Saturn’s moon, Titan.
Researchers used data from
NASA’s Cassini spacecraft to study
the chemically complex surface
of Titan. Based on their research,
scientists say it is possible that
a “primitive, exotic form of life or
precursor to life” may exist on Titan.
This research is outlined in two
separate papers: one in the journal
Icarus, and another in the Journal of
Geophysical Research.
The research published in Icarus
concluded that hydrogen gas found
in Titan’s atmosphere disappeared at
the moon’s surface. As the Telegraph
explains, this suggests that alien
forms could be breathing on Titan.
Similarly, the paper published in the
Journal of Geophysical Research
noted that there was a lack of the
chemical compound acetylene
at Titan’s surface. Chris McKay,
an astrobiologist at NASA’s Ames Research Center,
explains, “This lack of acetylene is important because
that chemical would likely be the best energy source for
a methane-based life on Titan.” Scientists believe that
life on Titan would consume hydrogen as life on Earth
consumes oxygen.
Cassini also detected the presence of something
appearing to be an organic compound on Titan’s surface
that scientists have been unable to identify.
McKay explained the significance of these studies
stating, “If these signs do turn out to be a sign of life, it

would be doubly exciting because it would represent a
second form of life independent from water-based life
on Earth.” Although this new information suggests the
existence of extraterrestrial life on Titan, Darrell Strobel,
a Cassini interdisciplinary scientist at Johns Hopkins
University who authored the paper with the hydrogen study,
explained, “The new hydrogen findings are consistent with
conditions that could produce an exotic, methane-based
life form, but do not definitively prove its existence.”
Cassini will fly by Titan many more times and will
hopefully be able to provide additional information.

“UFO” Causes Stir in DC
Drivers on Washington, DC’s Capital Beltway were
surprised by what appeared to be a flying saucer being
transported by a flatbed truck on the night of Wednesday,
June 13. But, according to Fox News, Maryland State
Police confirmed that the strange craft was actually
the X-47B unmanned drone aircraft made by Northrop
Grumman. The craft was reportedly being transported from
West Virginia to Patuxent Naval Air Station in Maryland.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because residents of Cowley
County, Kansas, also saw what they thought was a UFO
being transported on the back of a truck last year. The
military, however, reassured the public that the saucershaped
craft was simply the X-47B unmanned drone.
NBC Washington reported that this is the second
X-47B to be transported through the Washington, DC
area. One reportedly arrived in late 2011, but created
X-47B
much less of a stir than this recent one. The military is
hinting at an increased presence of drones in the area
in the coming months, cautioning people to “be careful
and pay attention to the road if you’re driving when you
see them!”

UN Has Instructions
for First Contact with
Aliens, Says Cosmonaut
Cosmonaut Gennady Padalka
The United Nations has instructions
for what to do when contact is
made with extraterrestrials. At least
that is what Russian cosmonaut
Gennady Padalka claimed during an
interview with the network Chinese
TV. Speaking from the International
Space Station, Padalka stated, “The
UN and representatives of China have
developed detailed instructions in
case of the first contact.” According
to Russian media outlet RIA Novosti,
Padalka shared his belief that humans
are not alone in the universe, stating,
“Sooner or later we will meet our likeminded
brothers.”
The interview between Padalka
and the Chinese television network
marked the launch of China’s
manned space mission to the
country’s Tiangong-1 space station.
Russian scientists are extremely
interested in communication with
extraterrestrials. For the past
three years, the Russian Institute
of Applied Astronomy has hosted
the Searching for Life Signatures
symposium, where scientists meet
to discuss both passive SETI and
active Messaging Extraterrestrial
Intelligence (METI) efforts. The
fourth annual Searching for Life
Signatures symposium takes place
in late September 2012.
Extraterrestrial Life Could be on the Moons
of Mars
The moons of Mars could provide evidence of life on the red planet,
according to Purdue University professor Dr. Jay Melosh. A press release
published on June 28 detailed Dr. Melosh’s theory that “a mission to a
Martian moon could return with alien life.” He explained that, if life ever
existed on Mars, or even if it exists today, the moons of Mars would almost
certainly contain Martian material delivered by debris from large asteroid
impacts. And, as www.io9.com reported, of the two Martian moons, Phobos
is more likely to contain these Martian particles.
Dr. Melosh led a team chosen by NASA’s Planetary Protection Office to
determine if samples from Phobos contain enough recent material from
Mars to include “viable Martian organisms.” Team member Loic Chappaz
expounded, “It is estimated that during the past 10 million years there have
been at least four large impact events powerful enough to launch material into
space, and we focused on several large craters as possible points of origin.”
Chappaz continued, “It turns out that no matter where Phobos is in its orbit, it
would have captured material from these powerful impact events.”
The researchers concluded that:
A 200-gram sample scooped from the surface of Phobos could contain,
on average, about one-tenth of a milligram of Mars surface material
launched in the past 10 million years and 50 billion individual particles from
Mars. The same sample could contain as much as 50 milligrams of Mars

Gliese 581g Named Best Place for Alien Life . . . if the Planet Even Exists

Curiosity Arrives on Mars
On August 5, NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory rover
successfully touched down on Mars. This automobilesized
science lab, named Curiosity, will conduct a
two-year mission exploring the planet’s surface and
searching for signs of past and present life.
Curiosity landed beautifully at its scheduled
destination in Gale Crater after slowing from an
incredible entry velocity of 13,000 mph to 2 mph in just
seven minutes. Time magazine provided the following
explanation for why the Gale Crater was selected for
the rover’s landing site:

Notorious Area 51 Book Being Adapted for Television
AMC has ordered a pilot episode for a scripted dramatic
television series about the secretive military installation in
Nevada known as Area 51. The basis for this show will be
Annie Jacobsen’s book, Area 51: An Uncensored History
of America’s Top Secret Military Base.
Jacobsen reportedly interviewed more than nineteen
men who worked at Area 51 for her book that “explores
the myths about the area and those who believe that
region is home to
aliens, underground
tunnel systems and
nuclear facilities,”
according to
the Hollywood
Reporter. This
book, published
in May 2011, met
with harsh criticism
because of many
questionable
assertions made
by Jacobsen.

to Jacobsen, an anonymous witness informed her that
the craft recovered at Roswell was actually an advanced
German aircraft, and that the bodies recovered from the
crash were children that had been mutilated by infamous
Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. This craft was allegedly
ordered to fly over the U.S. by Joseph Stalin, hoping to
trick Americans into thinking it was an extraterrestrial
spacecraft, which would result in a mass panic similar
to the one caused by the 1938 radio broadcast of H.G.
Wells’s The War of the Worlds.
Many doubt the veracity of this Roswell story, including
ABC reporter Bill Weir. Weir also interviewed this
anonymous witness, but said the witness asserts he did
not make all of the claims laid out in the book. The former
Area 51 employees interviewed by Jacobsen have also
stated that they feel betrayed and that certain fictitious
elements, including the Roswell story, were added to
bolster book sales.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that the Area 51
television show “will take place in the 1950s-1960s and
will focus on those who work at the base and protect the
country’s secrets—including the remains of the alleged
alien crash at Roswell.”
The controversy surrounding Jacobsen and her book
doesn’t seem to bother AMC, however, and the cable
network has even tapped Jacobsen to serve as a coproducer
of the show. Walking Dead executive producer,
Gale Anne Hurd, will reportedly be the executive producer,
and Todd E. Kessler (The Good Wife) will create the script.

Multiple residents along South Carolina’s Grand Strand recently observed UFOs in the sky.
WPDE NewsChannel 15 recently aired a story about a July 18 sighting by Longs, South
Carolina resident J.F. Kiernan. He told NewsChannel 15 that he observed strange flashing
lights in the night sky for more than three hours. He explains that these UFOs “did climbs, they
went to altitudes, they changed directions that are beyond physics. It’s just not possible.”
Kiernan contacted Open Minds with additional details and photos. He says that he did not believe
in UFOs until he recently started seeing lights in the sky on an almost daily basis. He reports that,
since his sighting on July 18, he, his wife, and others in the area have observed strange lights in the
sky, at both day and night, that are present for more than three hours at a time. And, although he does
not ever recall a military presence in the area, Kiernan also claims that there have been numerous
military helicopters and jets in the sky, usually in the exact area where he has recently observed UFOs.
NewsChannel 15 reports that the Federal Aviation Administration says “none of
its pilots reported anything strange in the air” on the night of July 18, and nearby
Shaw Air Force Base was not conducting training missions along the coast that night.
Witnesses, including Kiernan, and officials have no idea what the lights are.
I, Matt Hancock, on or about mid year of 1994 around 3am,
and my girlfriend, Romina Lockery, who later became my
wife and then later divorced, were traveling west on SR 24
in Ohio. We had left Toledo, Ohio from a friend’s house and
were traveling back to Defiance, Ohio where we resided. We
were driving in an early model 90’s red Ford Escort, Romina
was driving. While traveling west we both noticed a very bright
point of light which we at first thought was a planet. Both of
us were interested in astronomy and often observed the sky
and discussed such matters. As we continued west, the light
became brighter and both of us thought it was now possibly
a plane low to the ground 2,000 to 3,000ft flying toward
us maybe eight to ten miles out. At first the light was just
something we had noted and also continued to discuss other
topics. Five to eight minutes later we noticed the light again,
but began to notice something different about the brightness
and position of the object; it was very low, close to ground.—
SR 24 meanders along the Maumee River, so the object would
come in and out of view. As we continued, Grand Rapids was
the next small town we were driving through and where, as we
approached and drove around a bend in the road, we finally
saw the object hovering stationary over very close to a twostory
farm house. We pulled into a gravel parking lot next to
and south of the house with a viaduct adjacent to the house and
to the west, our left. We both saw six extremely bright lights,
all possibly five to eight feet in diameter, tapered down in a V
shape, also from top down the lights angled inward at maybe a
30° or so that the top of the lights leaned out and were closer
to us than the bottom. The object was hovering approximately
over the house and partly the gravel lot. The directions of the
light beams were aimed to the southeast at a 45° down.
The brightness of the six lights were intense enough that the
dust particles in the air were illuminated and reflecting light so
that we could distinctly see which way they were pointed and
angled. We observed it for a few moments while I also noticed
other vehicles passing behind us, but not stopping. I rolled my
window down and immediately noticed no sound. I could not
discern the shape, color, or design of the object. The lights
obscured any view as well as it was a moonless dark sky. What
we did notice was a very eerie and strange feeling. I exited
the car and Romina became agitated. She asked me not to,
but I stepped out. I observed the object for a few minutes and
just stood in awe. It wasn’t much longer and the object turned
slowly toward us, like we had definitely been noticed. Romina
then became very agitated and wanted to leave. I wanted
to stay a little longer, but she became anxious and I have to
admit I was feeling the same as well as fascinated. I somewhat
reluctantly agreed and she accelerated, spinning the tires and
spraying stones and gravel as we exited the parking lot.
As we continued west, I looked back to observe what I
could and I no longer could see the bright lights, but instead
noticed the large dark shape, still not recognizable other than
a large size, approximately the size of the two-story farm
house it was hovering over or next too, but as I recall there
seemed to be several dim, possibly blue to green, strobing
lights appearing at random areas on the side of the object,
like an LED might appear. It appeared to move eastward and
drop below the railroad tracks that were constructed on a
raised mound of earth, maybe thirty to forty feet high.
To the best of my knowledge and recollection those are the
events that took place that night. Romina and I strangely did not
discuss the matter and I no longer maintain contact with her.

The scientific community tends to dismiss alien abduction
reports as mere fancies. The reasoning is usually due
to the lack of hard evidence backing up the abductee’s
claims. When the abduction story comes from two people
who, under hypnosis, tell the same story, and when
dozens of people actually confirmed seeing something strange
in the sky that day, then the whole case must be examined
under a different light. That is what happened with the Kelly
Cahill abduction case.
On August 7, 1993, twenty-five-yearold
Australian woman Kelly Cahill and her
husband Andrew were driving along the
road that leads from the town of Cranbourne
to the Dandenong Mountains, east of
Melbourne, Australia. It was around 11:30
p.m., and the couple was heading home after
spending the evening at a friend’s house.
Near Belgrave South, a suburb of Melbourne,
Kelly noticed an unusual ring of orange lights
hovering over a fenced garden. Her husband,
focused on driving, did not see anything.
Around midnight, while driving between
Belgrave and Hallam, both of the Cahills
noticed lights similar to those Kelly had
seen previously that evening. Kelly would
later state that, from afar, the lights
appeared to be flashing and hanging over
the road at about four hundred meters
from their car. Then, with a tremendous
acceleration, the lights disappeared quickly
towards Melbourne.
Andrew kept on driving, but the mysterious
occurrences were far from over for the
couple. A few miles later, they saw a blinding
white light in the middle of the road. According
to Kelly, as they drove closer to the object, she
felt as if her perceptions and reality itself were
changing. In fact, without them realizing it, the car
had slowed down suddenly. Kelly would also state
that she felt a strong sense of disorientation, as if
she had a blackout.
Other elements give the story a peculiar
feel: The air inside the car had a pungent smell
of vomit, despite there being no trace of it.
Additionally, Kelly would report that she had a
severe stomach pain.
The biggest surprise, however, awaited them
at home. When they arrived home, it was 2:30
a.m. Given that they had left their friend’s home
at about 11:30 p.m. and the trip, made many
times before, always took an hour and a half,
the couple was shocked. There were ninety
“missing” minutes, for which neither Kelly nor
Andrew could account.
The after-effects appeared a few hours later.
In the middle of the night, Kelly suffered from an
unexplained bleeding and discovered a one-inchwide
red triangular cut below her naval. The cut
would disappear five months later, but left her
with a scar, as if the skin had been removed.

The next night, Kelly had a strange dream.
It was night time, and she was sitting on the edge of
a road with her head on her knees. An unknown being
was taking her husband to a nearby field, but she could
not see any details. Kelly approached the being and
attempted to strike it, but then she blacked-out, finding
herself in a field where there was a UFO. In front of
her, on the ground, there was a body, which gradually
transformed to human form with the features of a
middle-aged woman. The body began to scream at
Kelly, “Murderer! Murderer!”
The scene changed in Kelly’s dream, and another
strange event occurred. Kelly felt a hand on her shoulders
and, pushed by it, she was led to a small room with only
a table and a strange being standing in front of her. The
being revealed to Kelly that she had not killed anyone.
Kelly had the strange feeling that she already knew the
being. On the table next to her there was a Bible, the
same one she kept at home and that had disappeared
some weeks earlier. At this point, the enigmatic being,
while saying that Kelly could return home provided she
did not take away the Bible, put the Bible in her hand.
The dream finished abruptly. Some days later, Kelly’s
husband found the Bible inside their car.
After the dream, Kelly’s health became unstable. The
bleeding which had begun the night of the sighting
continued for over three weeks until Kelly, concerned and
affected by severe headaches, went to the hospital. Kelly
was diagnosed with a type of uterine infection (difficult
to explain since the type of infection she had was usually
caused by spontaneous pregnancy interruptions or
surgeries) and prescribed antibiotics.
But the unknown was ready again to interrupt in Kelly’s life.
On the night of September 6, 1993, while lying in bed, Kelly
felt the presence of an unknown entity in her room. It told her
to remain quiet while a terrible sensation pervaded her chest.
She was paralyzed and unable to move from the bed.
Suddenly, there appeared a tall dark figure
with a long cloak over its shoulders
and a cap. The being had
luminescent red

stared at
Kelly in a
way she
perceived
as hostile.
Just as it had
appeared, the
entity vanished
into thin air.
Kelly insisted
on the fact
that she was
conscious during the
experience and did
not have the feeling
of being in a dream.
Upon first examination,
she ascribed the incident
to the appearance of
a sort of vampire, since
there were no elements,
in her opinion, that could
resemble an alien abduction.

On October 1, 1993, Kelly
and Andrew planned another
visit with their friends and drove
along the road from Belgrave to
Hallam. It was while sitting in
the car that Kelly had a series
of vivid flashbacks. Kelly was
able to recall that bizarre night in
August and saw her and Andrew
with the strange beings and their
spaceship. Terrified at the time,
Kelly did not tell her husband
anything about the flashback,
and they went to dinner with
their friends.
Later that evening, more
memories surfaced: Kelly was
able to recall that the object in the
middle of the field had a diameter
of more than fifty feet. She also
remembered that Andrew and her
had stopped the vehicle to observe the
craft and noticed that another car had
also stopped behind them to observe the
scene. When Kelly stepped out of the
car, she realized that there were other
people in a trance state unaware of the
Cahills’ presence. In front of the craft
appeared a tall black figure with a huge
head—the being stood more than seven
feet tall.
Despite being extremely worried, Kelly
recalled that she had tried to greet this
being telepathically, but the answer that
she perceived was, “Let’s kill them.”
At the same time, seven other figures
similar to the first one appeared. In total
despair, Kelly began to inveigh against
them, accusing them of being soulless.
At that point, the eyes of the eight
figures began to glow, while Kelly
was thrown into the air after having
received a tremendous hit to her
stomach leaving her breathless.
After falling to the ground, she
realized that she was no longer
able to distinguish anything as
if she was blind. She heard her
husband ask for help a few
meters away, while another
male voice tried to calm
him. Kelly still did not see
anything, but screamed
hysterically until she lost
consciousness.
She awoke on the
lawn, still blinded.
. Kelly started to
scream again. Then,
she felt a hand
on her shoulder
and, with no
explanation, she
found herself in
her car.
In Search of Lost Time
Given the importance of what
Kelly had managed to recall, she
decided to inform the authorities
to alert them of any actual
threat. Kelly contacted the Civil
Aviation Safety Authority, multiple
universities, and Bill Chalker, a
famous scholar from New South
Wales, to inform them of her
experience. Chalker introduced her
to John Auchettl, director of the
Phenomena Research Australia.
In researching the case,
Auchettl decided to put a vague
advertisement in various local
newspapers in which he asked
people who had sighted a UFO to
contact him. His advertisement didn’t
make any reference to a particular
date or location of the sighting.
The responses he received
transformed Kelly’s experience
from a subjective level to an extremely
objective one. Numerous testimonies
involved the sighting of a strange object
in the sky the night of August 7, 1993. In
particular two women, Jane and Glenda,
told Auchettl that they were with their
husbands driving along the road leading
from Belgrave to Hallam when, all of a
sudden, they felt a violent nausea, which
caused them to lose control of their car
and crash. After getting out of the car
to assess the damage and make sure it
was possible to continue driving, they
saw a bright object in the distance. After
driving a few hundred yards, they saw
two cars stationary on the road. Nearer,
in the middle of a field, they also saw a
glowing UFO with eight figures silhouetted
against the light as reported by Kelly. Very
surprised, they stepped out of the car and
approached the parked vehicles; in one of
them a man was sitting, motionless.
At this point, they reported hearing
a loud noise that made them lose
consciousness. Jane stated that she
had seen what she could only describe
as a “red dragon” moving quickly past
her. While Jane’s memory might suggest
a hallucination, it in fact is one of the
most important aspects to give credibility
to the whole affair.
The two women, unlike Kelly,
underwent regressive hypnosis sessions
during which they said that they had
been tied down on a table, from which
they could only see the ceiling, unable to
move, until a tall black figure appeared.
Jane and Glenda also showed significant
physical signs to support their stories:
Both had the same triangular mark that
had appeared on Kelly’s body, while
Glenda also had a bruise on the ankle
produced by a tight ligature.
An Exemplary Inquiry
The strongest confirmation of the
genuineness of the experience comes
from the “red dragon” sighting. In
September 1996, Kelly took part in an
interview with an Australian magazine.
After the publication of the interview,
the editor received a letter in which
a husband and wife, believing they
might have been involved in the same
experience, asked the editor to contact
Kelly and inquire as to whether she
remembered a car that night with a
rear spare tire on which there had been
placed a red protective coating in the
shape of a dragon.
As it turned out, this was the same
“red dragon” seen by Jane. Because Auchettl
had handled the matter so secretly, Kelly was
totally unaware of this particular detail.
But the work of Auchettl and Phenomena
Research Australia did not end there.
Numerous surveys and examinations
were made at the area of the alleged UFO
landing, from which it they learned of several
anomalies: the foliage was abraded with
small holes on each leaf; the ground was
pressed as if something particularly heavy
had been placed on it; and the ground
appeared dehydrated despite being a
swamp. Moreover, there was an anomalous
amount of sulfur and tannic acid over the
entire area.

As in any case of alleged abduction,
there are multiple hypotheses as to
what really happened to Kelly Cahill.
The first thought that comes to
mind is that reports like Kelly’s are a
clear sign of a psychiatric disorder that
makes a person fabricate weird tales.
While this approach is legitimate, it fails
to take into account several aspects:
the sighting of an aircraft in the sky,
the testimonies of other people who
claim having seen the same object, the
tracks found on the ground and, especially, the
unexplained marks on the body.
The central problem with abduction cases is
trying to understand the extent to which these
accounts faithfully report something that really
happened. The next step, once an abduction
has actually been determined, is to try to
assess the witnesses’ credibility. Regressive
hypnosis is the most common technique,
although many questions have been raised
regarding the objectivity of its results.
As to Kelly Cahill, an experience that she
intimately perceived as real definitely took
place; however, nobody can be 100% sure that
what she thought to be real was truly objective
and not some kind of mental imposition made
by a non-human intelligence.

M any people associate the terms “alien” and “extraterrestrial”
with the planet Mars. Pop culture is likely responsible for
this association, as many works of fiction from the late
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries popularized the notion
of life on Mars. Indeed, the terms “alien” and “Martian” are now
frequently used interchangeably. But what inspired science
fiction writers to assume the feasibility of life on the red planet
above any other planet in the solar system? Although many
mainstream scientists hold the opinion that the planet is void of
life, some astronomers and other researchers have suggested
that there is evidence of life on Mars. So, is there life on Mars?

Early Notions of Life on Mars
The 1898 science fiction novel, The War
of the Worlds, by H. G. Wells, provides one
of the earliest mentions of intelligent life on
Mars. The novel presents a story of a Martian
invasion of Earth. The War of the Worlds
influenced pop culture’s view of Mars and
extraterrestrial life, and it also influenced
scientists. Robert Hutchings Goddard,
considered by NASA’s Jet Propulsion
Laboratory as one of the fathers of rocketry
and astronautics, credited the novel with
igniting his interest in space and spurring
him to create a rocket “that might reach the
moon, or even Mars.” In turn, it was science
that influenced the novel.
Wells himself was a science teacher, whose
first published book was actually a biology
textbook. He also contributed to, and served
as a reviewer of, the well-regarded scientific
journal, Nature. In fact, to begin The War of
the Worlds, Wells used an observation of light
on Mars described in an article published in
Nature. Wells simply transformed the lights
into launching Martian spacecraft.
French astronomer Nicolas Camille
Flammarion authored the article in Nature
that provided the beginning to Wells’s book.
Flammarion himself, along with other
astronomers of the late 1800s, supported the
notion of life on Mars. Space journalist Amy
Shira Teitel points out that the similarities
between Earth and Mars were too striking
for early astronomers to ignore. She explains
that both planets are similar in size, both
have similar daily rotations (Earth: twenty-four
hours; Mars: twenty-five hours), and both
planets share similar surface characteristics.
Astronomers William Whewell, Sir David
Brewster, and Richard Anthony Proctor are
but a handful of the early astronomers who
believed Mars was likely harboring life.
Another notable astronomer, Percival
Lowell, for whom the Lowell Observatory in
Flagstaff, Arizona is named, believed that life
existed on Mars. Lowell, whose works led to
the discovery of Pluto, became enamored
with Mars in 1894 after reading Flammarion’s
book, La Planète Mars et ses Conditions
D’Habitabilité (The Planet Mars and Its
Habitability Conditions). Drawings of what
appeared to be natural channels on Mars by
Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli also
piqued Lowell’s interest. Lowell interpreted
these channels to be artificial canals
manufactured by intelligent Martians. He
surmised that Martians built these canals to
spread water from the poles to the rest of the
planet. His theories drew sharp criticism from
his peers. And as more powerful telescopes
were developed, it became mainstream
science’s position that no such canals
exist on Mars. Lowell also believed that
vegetation grew on Mars, and he detailed his
observations in his book, Mars and its Canals:

On April 19, 1903, when, after
being hidden for thirty days,
owing to the different rotation
periods of the two planets, the
Mare Erythraeum, the largest
bluegreen region of the disk and
lying in the southern hemisphere,
rounded again into view, a startling
transformation stood revealed in it.
Instead of showing bluegreen as
usual, and as it had done six weeks
before, it was now of a distinct
chocolate-brown. It had been well
seen at its previous presentation,
so that no doubt existed of its
then tint. At that time the Martian
season corresponded to December
30 in our calendar. Eighteen
Martian days had since elapsed,
and it was now January 16 there.
The metamorphosis had taken
place, therefore, shortly after the
winter solstice of that part of the
planet. The color change that had
supervened proved permanent. For
the next night the region showed
the same brown hue, and so it
continued to appear throughout the
days that it was visible.
Two months passed, and then the
chocolate hue had vanished—gone
as it had come—and the mare had
resumed its usual tint, except for
being somewhat pale at the south.
It had come to be February 21 on
Mars.
We conclude, therefore, that the
blue-green areas of Mars are not
seas, but areas of vegetation.
Astronomer Percival Lowell
Lowell’s controversial theories
regarding life on Mars were also
reportedly influences on Wells’s The
War of the Worlds and early twentiethcentury
pop-culture views regarding
life on Mars.
Surface Features
Both professional and amateur
astronomers have observed
mysterious objects on the Martian
surface. Although Lowell’s belief of
Martian-manufactured water transport
canals seemed like a stretch to
many scientists, other objects on the
Martian surface have met with equal,
or perhaps greater, skepticism.
NASA’s Viking program in the 1970s
sent a pair of probes to Mars to study
the planet from both the surface
and from orbit. The Viking landers
extensively photographed the planet’s
surface, and this program provided
much of the current available
information about Mars. An odd
surface feature was photographed
by Viking 1 on July 25, 1976 in the
Cydonia region of the planet, which
later became known as the “Face
on Mars.” As its name implies, this
large object (approximately one mile
across) resembles a human face.
NASA scientists accepted the theory
that this face resulted from shadows
and light creating an optical illusion,
but others refused to accept this
explanation, especially after a second
image showed the “face” when the
sun was at a different angle from
where it was when the first photo was
taken. A notable challenger of NASA’s
opinion is Richard C. Hoagland, who
was a journalist covering the Viking
mission at the time of the discovery.

Hoagland asserts the “Face on Mars” is an artificial
structure, and he suggests that it, along with many other
adjacent “structures,” make up a city. He and others feel
this provides evidence that an ancient civilization may
have once existed on Mars.
Twenty years later, new images of the Cydonia region
provided greater detail than the original images, leading
the majority of researchers to conclude that the “Face on
Mars” is nothing more than an optical illusion, as many
had originally suspected. But Hoagland and others adhere
to the belief that artificial structures exist on Mars, and
that NASA is potentially covering up information related to
these structures.
NASA’s Mariner 9 space orbiter photographed small
volcanic structures on Mars in 1972 that were identified
as lava flow channels, rift zones, and partly collapsed lava
tubes. The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Mars Express
spacecraft recently captured additional photographs of
lava tubes. The photos reveal rows of “pit-chains” lining
the sides of volcanoes in the planet’s Tharsis region.
Ancient volcanic activity likely caused these pit-chains.
Scientists believe tubes like these could provide a safe
environment for life. Jason Major of www.universetoday.com
explains, “Even though the surface of Mars can receive
250 times the radiation levels found on Earth, the layers of
soil and rock surrounding the tubes can provide adequate
protection for life, whether it be ancient Martian microbes
or future explorers from Earth.”
Geologic Evidence
In 1984, a Martian meteorite was discovered in
Antarctica that sparked significant controversy regarding
life on Mars. On August 6, 1996, scientist David McKay
of NASA’s Johnson Space Center published an article
in Science magazine claiming that the Allan Hills 84001
Martian meteorite, commonly referred to as ALH 84001,
contained possible evidence of life on Mars. The mixture
of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found within
fractures in the meteorite is very different from what is
found in other meteorites. When micro-organisms die,
they break down into PAHs, so some scientists believe
the different mixture of PAHs in ALH 84001 suggests
the possibility of a biological origin. Another piece of
evidence within this meteorite suggesting Martian life is
the presence of, as NASA describes it, “tiny ovoids” that
may be microfossils of tiny bacteria. NASA explains, “The
findings are thought to be strong evidence pointing to
primitive bacterial life on Mars.” Not all scientists agree
on the interpretation of this evidence, however, and some
have suggested that any biologic evidence found on the
meteorite is the result of Earthly contamination. Therefore,
the ALH 84001 meteorite remains highly controversial.
More recently, a team of scientists from the School of
Mathematics at Cardiff University and the Buckingham
Centre for Astrobiology at the University of Buckingham
studied another Martian meteorite and published a paper
announcing that this meteorite indicates the possibility of

life on Mars. This meteorite crashed
in the Moroccan desert on June 18,
2011, approximately thirty miles south
of the village, Tissint. The meteorite,
named after this village, contained
spherical globules rich in carbon
and oxygen. And although some
skeptics may suggest contamination
occurred on Earth, the scientific
team is confident that, because
of its surrounding thick crust, the
meteorite’s interior material is “pristine
and uncontaminated.” According to
Ph.D. student Jamie Wallis, one of the
scientists from the team, “Other work
to confirm our proposal is well under
way and all the indications are that
structures such as we have found are
evidence of life on Mars.”
In April 2012, another team of
scientists published a study concluding
that NASA itself had found life on Mars.
The team analyzed data collected by
NASA’s Mars Viking robots in 1976,
concluding that samples were originally
incorrectly identified by scientists as
geologic samples, rather than biologic
samples. This new interpretation
of thirty-six-year-old data is not
without its critics. Some scientists
contend that the method used by this
research team to differentiate between
biological and non-biological samples
has yet to be proven. Regardless,
neuropharmacologist and biologist
Joseph Miller from the University of
Southern California’s Keck School of
Medicine, a member of the research
team, told Discovery News, “On the
basis of what we’ve done so far, I’d say

I’m 99 percent sure there’s life there.”
Many geologic features such as
canyons, channels, and river beds are
evidence that there was flowing water
on Mars in the past. In fact, missions
by NASA and the ESA have found
water ice. The new frontier is to find
liquid water—and new studies are
doing just that.

conclude that there is an extensive
amount of water in the interior of

McCubbin, analyzed Martian
meteorites that originated from Mars’s
mantle. The research suggests that
the volume of water within the Martian
mantle is similar to the volume

of water in Earth’s upper mantle.
According to www.Phys.org, “The
Martian mantle source from which
the rocks were derived contained
between 70 and 300 parts per million
(ppm) water,” whereas Earth’s upper
mantle “contains approximately 50-
300 ppm water.” This new research
also suggests “volcanoes may have
been the primary vehicle for getting
water to the surface.”
Conclusion
There does not seem to be a
satisfactory answer to the question:
“Is there life on Mars?” The current
unsatisfying answer seems to be,
“It depends on who you ask.”
Although several researchers and
NASA-affiliated scientists have
interpreted data as evidence for
Martian life, the mainstream scientific
community does not seem to agree.
Without more concrete evidence, it
is unlikely that mainstream science
will authoritatively and unanimously
announce that life exists on Mars.
Fortunately, however, that day
may be approaching. NASA’s
Curiosity Rover, the world’s biggest
extraterrestrial explorer, just landed
on the planet in August 2012, and
this rolling science laboratory will
search for signs of life. Additionally,
multiple countries including China
and Russia are eyeing manned
missions to the red planet, and a few
private space companies are also
hoping to visit Mars in the near future.
There is much attention on Mars
currently, and hopefully it will result in
a definitive answer as to whether or
not the planet was, or is, home to life,
intelligent or otherwise.

UFOs During the Reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III

In this new column of Open Minds, we will explore mankind’s ancient mysteries. While the column will
deal primarily with paleocontact and UFOs throughout history, we may also veer off occasionally to other
archaeological enigmas like the search for Atlantis or mysterious documents like the Voynich Manuscript.
As the first column of the series, it is fitting to start with possibly the most mysterious ancient location in the
world, Egypt: land of the pharaohs, pyramids, and timeless temples, a living symbol of man’s remote past. Of
all of the seven wonders of the ancient world, only the Great Pyramids and the Great Sphinx at Giza remain
standing. In this column, we will explore the evidence for UFOs in ancient Egypt and its most famous case,
the so-called Tulli Papyrus, which took place circa 1504-1450 BC, during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III.

The Tulli Papyrus is named after the Italian professor of
Egyptology, Alberto Tulli, who was at one time the director
of the Vatican’s Gregorian Egyptian Museum. The story
of the Tulli Papyrus is a controversial case because the
original papyrus has never been found, but it’s nevertheless
a fascinating story with a cast of characters that seem right
out of a Dan Brown thriller. The story involves a Vatican
Egyptologist, Dr. Tulli, and his brother, Monsignor Gustavo
Tulli, who worked in the Vatican Secret Archives. The
story also involves Abbot Étienne Drioton, a prominent
Egyptologist, who was the Director General of Antiquities at
the Egyptian Museum in Cairo in the 1930s, the time period
when the Tulli Papyrus first emerged. The story also involves
the mysterious Russian-Italian Prince Boris de Rachewiltz,
who eventually publicized the story in an article published
in 1953 in the Fortean journal, Doubt. Prince de Rachewiltz
studied Egyptology at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome
and also studied Vatican diplomacy at Accademia Vaticana
(Vatican Academy) in the 1950s. He published several books
on ancient Egypt and Africa, including what is probably his
best known work, Black Eros: Sexual Customs of Africa
from Prehistory to the Present Day. The prince married Mary
Rudge, daughter of the famous American poet Ezra Pound,
and soon became a close confidant of Pound. In many
respects, the story surrounding the Tulli Papyrus is just as
interesting as the contents of the manuscript itself.
The story began in 1934, when Professor Tulli was shown
the mysterious papyrus at the house of a Cairo antiquarian.
(Unfortunately, the name of the antiquarian, the circumstances
that led to the meeting, and what happened to the original
papyrus itself, remain unknown for certain.) The price to
purchase the manuscript was too expensive for Professor
Tulli, but he was allowed to make a copy of it, a transcription
in hieratic characters, which was later converted to regular
hieroglyphs by Étienne Drioton. The document remained
unpublished until Prince Boris de Rachewiltz gained access to
Professor Tulli’s personal papers through his brother, Monsignor
Tulli. Prince de Rachewiltz translated the text of the manuscript
to English for his article, and he noted that “the beginning and
the end are missing, its writing (in hieratic) is pale and with
several lacunae.” Prince de Rachewiltz was able to translate
several key portions of the text including the following:
In the year 22, third month of winter, sixth hour of the day
. . . The scribes of the House of Life found it was a circle
of fire that was coming in the sky. [Though] it had no head,
the breath of its mouth [had] a foul odor. Its body was one
“rod” long and one “rod” large. It had no voice. Their hearts
become confused through it: then they laid themselves on
their bellies . . . They went to the King to report it. . . . His
Majesty was meditating upon what happened. Now, after
some days had passed over those things, Lo! They were
more numerous than anything. They were shining in the sky
more than the sun to the limits of the four supports of the
heavens. . . . Powerful was the position of the fire circles.
The army of the king looked on and His Majesty was in their
midst of it. It was after supper. Thereupon [the fire circles]
went up higher directed to South. Fishes and volatiles fell
down from the sky. [It was] a marvel that never occurred
since the foundation of this Land! Caused His Majesty to
be brought incense to pacify the hearth . . . [and to write]
what happened in the book of the House of Life . . . [to be
remembered] for Eternity.
If real, the Tulli Papyrus seems to establish an initial UFO
sighting—“a circle of fire in the sky”—followed by a wave of
sightings which involved, among others, the pharaoh himself.
The text refers to “His Majesty” several times: how the initial
phenomenon was reported to him and how he meditated on
its meaning, only to later become a witness to the fire circles.
Pharaoh Thutmose III (1481-1425 BC), who was the acting
pharaoh at the time described in the manuscript, was not
just any pharaoh, but one of the most prominent rulers of the
ancient world. In fact, historians later called him the “Napoleon
of Egypt” because of his conquest of Syria and Palestine in
the famous battle of Kadesh as well as his Nubian campaigns,
which greatly extended Egypt’s sphere of influence.
But even if the Tulli Papyrus is not authentic, Jacques

Vallee and Chris Aubeck, authors of the historical UFO book,
Wonders in the Sky: Unexplained Aerial Objects from Antiquity
to Modern Times, mention another UFO-related document
involving Thutmose III’s military campaigns in Lebanon,
specifically at a site known as Upper Retjenu. The stela of
Gebel Barkal is a stone slab intended as a victory monument
and inscribed with ancient text. The stela reads in part:
[The star] positioned itself above them as if they didn’t
exist, and then they fell upon their own blood. Now [the star]
was behind them [illuminating] their faces with fire; no man
amongst them could defend himself, none of them looked
back. They had not their horses as [these] had fled into the
mountains, frightened … Such is the miracle that Amon did
for me, his beloved son in order to make the inhabitants of
the foreign lands see of the power of my majesty.
The stela, which is dated circa 1460 BC and was
discovered in the small mountain of Gebel Barkal in Nubia,
presently southern Sudan, is a “document of undisputable
authenticity,” wrote Vallee and Aubeck, adding that the text
was first published in a German Egyptology journal in 1933.
The stela is now on display at the National Museum of Sudan
in Khartoum.
While the stela is clearly authentic, the Tulli Papyrus is
dismissed by many researchers because both the papyrus
itself and Professor Tulli’s original transcription are now
missing. In the 1960s, even the U.S. government-funded
Condon Report tried to authenticate the document by
contacting the Vatican’s Egyptian Museum for access to Tulli’s
papers. The response received by the scientific attaché at
the U.S. Embassy in Rome was that Professor Tulli’s papers
were not at the Vatican, but had been dispersed among
Tulli’s relatives. Apparently, the papers were first given to
the Egyptologist’s brother, Monsignor Gustavo Tulli, and
then after his death further dispersed among other family
members. Among those who searched for the papers was
the Italian professor Solas Boncompagni, an early pioneer in
paleocontact and other Fortean historical mysteries.
As a result of the disappearance of the original copy of
the Tulli Papyrus as well as Professor Tulli’s papers, Samuel
Rosenberg, author of the Condon Report’s chapter titled,
“UFOs in History,” essentially dismissed the whole story as a
forgery, a position maintained by many skeptical researchers
to this day. But Rosenberg, who was neither a historian nor
an Egyptologist, but instead a documentary filmmaker, didn’t
present any proof to back his hypothesis other than the
missing originals. If the Tulli Papyrus is a hoax, then the prime
suspect would have to be Prince Boris de Rachewiltz. Yet, if
that is the case, one must ask why an Egyptologist who was
the author of more than twelve books, would create such a
forgery and risk his entire academic reputation. There was
certainly no money involved in the publication of the Doubt
article and whatever little fame may have come from this story
was not worth the risk.
The mysterious Tulli Papyrus suggests that the pharaoh
himself may have observed a UFO. Such a story is remarkably
similar to an inscription from Thutmose III cited by the late
Zecharia Sitchin in his book, The Stairway to Heaven, which is
devoted mostly to ancient Egypt. The inscription proclaimed that
the great god Ra had given the Pharaoh a tour of the heavens:
He opened for me the doors to Heaven,
He spread open for me the portals of its horizon,
I flew up to the sky as a divine Falcon . . .
That I might see his mysterious ways in heaven . . .
I was made full with the understanding of the gods.
Unfortunately, Sitchin doesn’t identify the inscription’s
source, so we are left with more questions than answers.
We don’t know if this text refers to a specific event, a dream
or vision, or even the afterlife. The Egyptian religion, as we
know, had a very elaborate set of rituals for the afterlife that
included mummification and splendid funerary monuments
for important people. Therefore, we may never know whether
Pharaoh Thutmose III was actually a UFO witness or perhaps
even a UFO experiencer or contactee. But either way, the tale
of the Tulli Papyrus makes for a great story.

WASHINGTON

The National Mall in Washington DC showcases many aspects of
America’s historical achievements. Artistic creations, technological
innovations, ethnic heritage, and popular culture are all well
represented in the enormous exhibit halls of the various Smithsonian
Institution museums. Other agencies also highlight America’s
accomplishments with museums, monuments, and memorials, all
vying for attendance from the fifteen million annual visitors to the
nation’s capital. One aspect of the American experience that you
won’t find very readily in Washington DC, however, are exhibits about
unidentified flying objects and the effect the phenomenon has had on
our culture.

pithy catchphrases like “little green men” in an effort to illicit a few laughs. It
dispassionately presents the information contained in a way that all historical
texts and documents should be scrutinized.
For some actual hands-on research, the National Archives has another
location in College Park, Maryland, dubbed “NARA II.” This enormous facility is
open to the public for research purposes. It houses all sorts of public records
and documents dating back to the nation’s founding. Here, you can browse the
actual Project Blue Book documents or purchase them on microfilm. There is
a motion picture research room where you can view early interviews with key
players in ufology. But the most interesting thing is the CIA’s Records Search
Tool (CREST) system.
The CREST database grants access to tens of thousands of declassified
CIA records. Many of these records deal with the CIA’s interest in UFOs
and other esoteric subjects such as the CIA’s remote-viewing project,
“Stargate.” Through CREST, you can even get an entire scanned copy of
the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomenon’s (NICAP)
1964 report, “The UFO Evidence,” which the CIA obviously felt was of
considerable importance.
Both National Archive locations are a must-see for the serious UFO
researcher as well as those with just a passing fancy in the UFO subject.
Arlington Cemetery’s UFO Investigators
One of the biggest tourist attractions in Washington DC is located across
the Potomac River in Virginia. The final resting place for many famous
military and historical figures, Arlington National Cemetery is a necropolis
inhabited by a veritable who’s who of our nation’s most historic events and
is considered to be the country’s most hallowed ground. It makes sense
that there are so many top brass located in the cemetery; it is, after all, right
across the street from the Pentagon.
Considering the military’s involvement in the earlier years of UFO
investigation, a few of these military figures buried at Arlington will be
recognizable to UFO enthusiasts. Perhaps the most controversial person
among UFO circles who is buried in Arlington would be James Forrestal. A
long-suspected member of the alleged UFO cover-up group, Majestic-12,
this former Secretary of Defense threw himself out of a window at Bethesda
Naval Hospital where he was being treated for depression. Some researchers
speculate that Forrestal was actually thrown out of the window and that his
death was due to his involvement in the UFO cover up.
Several other alleged members of Majestic-12 are also buried in Arlington
Cemetery. U.S. Air Force General Hoyt Vandenberg and U.S. Navy Admiral
Roscoe Hillenkoetter are both buried in Arlington. General Vandenberg
was the director of the CIA’s predecessor, the Central Intelligence Group,
from 1946-47 and was the U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff from 1948 to 1953.
Hillenkoetter was the first director of the CIA. With their background, both
men would have had access to all aspects of the classified world involving
UFOs, and Hillenkoetter was actually a board member of NICAP from 1957
to 1962.
While on the NICAP board, Hillenkoetter was quoted in the New York
Times on the subject of UFOs stating, “Behind the scenes, high-ranking
Air Force officers are soberly concerned about UFO’s. But through official
secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying
objects are nonsense.”
The other two supposed Majestic-12 members located in Arlington
Cemetery are Lieutenant General Robert Miller Montague and U.S. Air Force
General Nathan Twining. Both men played a key role in the Roswell narrative.
Another high-ranking U.S. Air Force general buried in Arlington is General
John Samford, who was Director of Air Force Intelligence during the
1952 Washington DC UFO flap. He is familiar in UFO circles for the press
conference he gave on July 29, 1952 from the Pentagon, assuring the public
that the air force was investigating the Washington UFO situation. During
the press conference, General Samford admitted that a certain percentage of
UFO sightings made by credible observers were reliable, but that they were
not a threat to national security. Notably, General Samford is buried on a hill
overlooking the Pentagon.

UFO Press Events in
Washington DC
Washington DC has been the site of many noteworthy
press events. The press conference involving General
Samford was the largest UFO press event to date. In
1987, at the American University, MUFON held a press
meeting for international journalists which involved Bruce
Maccabee, Jaime Shandera, and Budd Hopkins fielding
questions. The MUFON press conference was covered
and broadcast by the United States Information Agency,
which is surprising because most U.S. government
agencies dismiss UFOs. For some reason, the U.S.
government felt the subject was worthy of distribution to
a foreign audience.
Lately, most key UFO press announcements have
been held at the National Press Club building across
the street from the famous Willard Hotel near the
White House. The first and most well-known was the
Disclosure Project press conference in 2001.

with UFOs. There was another important
UFO press event at the National Press
Club in 2007, and yet another one in
2010, which involved Robert Hastings and
Robert Salas discussing UFO sightings
at nuclear weapons facilities. All of these
National Press Club meetings involved
high-ranking military and government
officials, so there is no surprise as to
why Washington DC was chosen to
showcase such events.

The Absence of UFOs at the
National Air and Space Museum
Arguably, the most popular museum in Washington DC
is the museum where one might expect to find an exhibit
about UFOs or at least some mention of UFOs. Ask any
kid in the country what museum they want to visit in
Washington DC, and the answer will undoubtedly be the
Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum (NASM),
which houses the nation’s most technologically advanced
artifacts from the fields of aviation and space flight. On
exhibit in the massive building on the National Mall are
items such as a Wright Brothers Flyer, the Bell X-1, and
the Apollo 11 command module, among many other
historic aircraft.
There is really only one item at this location that even
hints at anything extraterrestrial, and to call the reference
“extraterrestrial” is a stretch. On display in the “Apollo to
the Moon” exhibit on the second floor is what was called
a Biological Isolation Garment. It’s a
biological hazmat suit with a gas
mask attached. This particular
item was worn by Buzz Aldrin
when the Apollo command
module splashed down,
and the astronauts had to
exit the craft and enter
the Mobile Quarantine
Facility. This was in
the days when little
was known about the
Moon’s environment
and it was thought
that the astronauts
might contract
“moon germs” and
bring them back
to Earth where
it was uncertain
what sort of havoc
such germs might
cause. The

safeguards
were
scrapped
after a few
missions when it was
determined that the Moon
was indeed lifeless. But
germs are life, bacterial in
nature, and if they were on
the Moon then they would
have been extraterrestrial.
The Smithsonian outlines
its interpretation of the
events of Roswell with a
presentation by curator
Roger Launius. Being
dubbed NASM’s
chief UFO skeptic,
Launius is quick
to point out in
the presentation
that they have
no artifacts of a
retrieved UFO
crash. Launius
even used a
public outreach
program called,
“Ask an Expert,”
as a platform
to attack the
UFO community
and those
who may have
questions about
the possible
existence of
UFOs. In a recent
email exchange
with Launius, he
attached the
PowerPoint
presentation
that

accompanied his talk which is titled, “UFOs, the Cold War,
and Chicanery in the Desert: The Legacy of the Roswell
Incident.” The name of the presentation itself expresses
Launius’ contempt for the topic of UFOs. The title frame
depicts a pie pan being held up in front of a camera by a
stick and some string. The presentation then addresses
the standard Roswell history, mentioning key Roswell
players, and then ends with the U.S. government’s
interpretation of the events being Project Mogul balloons.
So, why no official exhibit regarding UFOs? It’s a topic in
which the public has taken a great interest. Launius points
to the fact that there are no “artifacts.” That’s easy enough
to solve, use models. Many of the displays in the NASM
employ models to interpret key events in our nation’s
aviation and space history. Take, for instance, the large
Voyager spacecraft hanging from the rafters that greets
people in one of main exhibition halls. It is obviously not
one of the real Voyager spacecraft. Those have exited the
solar system.
But in an email, Launius explained the real reason
why there is not a real UFO exhibit at the NASM: It is too
controversial. Launius wrote,
[I]t also compels exploration of two enormously
controversial areas. The first involves the origins of life.
This would bring NASM into direct assault from the
forces of creationist/intelligent design wishful thinking,
for it would of necessity engender evolution as a means
of explaining the rise of life. Second, it would oblige us
to deal with the issue of UFOs and the belief by many
that we are being visited by intelligences from beyond
Earth. In such a setting, is there any way to win? I
happen to believe this is a significant enough issue to
warrant taking on whatever opposition might exist, but
thus far NASM leaders have shown no interest.
The Sounds of Earth record launched aboard the Voyager I and II space probes, which was
intended as messages to extraterrestrial civilizations that the spacecraft may encounter.

Launius seems conflicted over the topic. He admits that
he is interested in UFOs and that he has been conducting
research on the topic for some time, but apparently politics
have relegated him to the aforementioned debunking of
events such as Roswell.
UFOs at the Steven F.
Udvar-Hazy Center
The Smithsonian’s aircraft collection has gotten so
big that NASM has expanded to a new site outside
Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia. This
new complex, called the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center,
houses many of the enormous aircraft unable to fit at
the museum’s National Mall location. The site contains
the Enola Gay, a Concorde, and, of particular interest
to UFO enthusiasts, a SR-71 Blackbird. Cited by the
CIA’s historian, Gerald Haines, as a possible explanation
for UFO sightings, the SR-71 is a high-altitude, highperformance,
intelligence-gathering platform used
to spy on the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
This particular SR-71 was also used in the filming of
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, a 2009 movie
about robot aliens who invade Earth, which was filmed
in part at the Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Center.
The Udvar-Hazy Center also houses two items which
hint at the U.S. government’s and NASA’s belief in the
possibility of extraterrestrial life. One of these items was
used in conjunction with the Biological Isolation Garment
mentioned earlier. Built by Airstream, the same company
that builds recreational trailers, the Mobile Quarantine
Facility was a place for the astronauts to go through
decontamination and get rid of any “moon germs” they
might have acquired on their journey. There is a famous
picture of President Nixon chatting with the crew standing
outside this facility that the pilots entered when they
arrived on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific Ocean.
The silver Airstream is a classic design which must have
seemed pretty futuristic at the time and now simply gives
the Apollo program a kitschy quality.
The other item is a piece of technology that used to
be commonplace in most households, but today would
be considered an anachronism. The Voyager Golden
Record is a phonograph record placed in both Voyager
spacecrafts. The record contains sound recordings from
Earth, greetings in fifty-five different languages, whale
songs, depictions of human beings, various other images,
and instructions on how to actually play the record. The
record is intended for extraterrestrial life, in the event
that Voyager might actually encounter any intelligent life
elsewhere in the galaxy.
Rounding out the Smithsonian’s UFO-related exhibits
at the Udvar-Hazy Center is a model of “the mothership,”
used in the filming of the classic Spielberg movie, Close
Encounters of the Third Kind. The model is really more of a
cultural item that you’d expect to find in the Smithsonian’s
American History Museum. Near the mothership model
is a case displaying science fiction-related toys from the
1950s. Two of these toys are flying saucers, one of which
is a Buck Rogers flying saucer toy consisting of two paper
plates crudely fastened together, and the other is a colorful
tin contraption manufactured in Germany. Both the toys
are testaments to the bygone days of the 1950s, when
flying saucers were such an integral part of American
popular culture.

Washington DC’s UFO Past
During the 1952 UFO flap, there were various sightings
of UFOs around the U.S. Capitol Building. With so much
history, it’s hard to imagine the U.S. Capitol Building as
the location for a UFO sighting, but it was a key location
during the incident. Appropriately, it has also served as
the location for various congressional hearings on UFOs.
Several congressional hearings on the UFO enigma
took place in House hearing chambers on Capitol Hill in
the 1960s. Prompted by then-Congressman Gerald Ford,
the House Armed Services committee held a hearing to
investigate the phenomenon in 1966.
In 1968, the House Committee on
Science and Astronautics held
a symposium on unidentified
flying objects. Witnesses who
testified at the hearing included
J. Allen Hynek, Richard
Hall, James McDonald, and
Stanton Friedman.
The most recent and
almost completely overlooked
congressional hearings in which
UFOs were discussed was a
2001 Subcommittee on Space
and Aeronautics
hearing called “Life
in Universe.”

The subcommittee topic mostly dealt with SETI and
their investigations; however, a portion of the hearings
delved into unidentified flying objects visiting Earth.
The chairman of the subcommittee, Representative
Dana Rohrabacher, questioned astrophysicist Dr.
Neil deGrasse Tyson about the possibility of UFOs.
Rohrabacher proclaimed, “Okay. I’m going to ask
the question nobody has the courage to ask. What
about it? What about these objects flying around.”
Rohrabacher’s comment is fascinating considering that
it was asked in a congressional hearing in 2001 by a
sitting U.S. Congressman. It shows that the subject
is still very much as relevant as it was
some fifty odd years earlier during
the DC UFO flap.
Conclusion

much of the UFO lore in the
nation’s capital has disappeared
and been forgotten, there is still
much of interest to the UFO
community. Arm yourself with the
facts, read the reports, and, while
you are in the nation’s capital,
conduct some research. Perhaps
one day that plaque will be
placed at National Airport or on
Capitol Hill and generations will
learn about the UFOs that flew
over Washington DC and the role
that they played in shaping our
nation’s history.

The 1952 Washington
DC UFO Flap
The Washington DC UFO flap, as it is
commonly known, was a series of UFO
reports over the Washington DC area from
July 12 to July 29, 1952.
One of the more famous sightings took
place on July 19-20, when an air traffic
controller at Washington National Airport
spotted seven unidentified objects on his
radar. Andrews Air Force Base was notified
as soon as the objects proceeded to fly
over the White House and the U.S. Capitol
Building. The objects then streaked off at
a high speed and disappeared. Those who
witnessed the objects described them
as an orange/white ball of light with a tail
trailing behind it. News of the sightings
quickly made headlines across the country.
More strange sightings occurred a
week later, on July 26-27, when similar
unidentified objects appeared in the skies.
A master sergeant at Andrews Air Force
Base observed the objects and would later
state that, “these lights did not have the
characteristics of shooting stars. There
[were] no trails . . . they traveled faster than
any shooting star that I have ever seen.”
It was reported that the objects were
capable of moving at speeds calculated at
7,000 mph. When the fighter jets arrived,
the objects surrounded the jets then sped
away and disappeared. Coverage of these
sightings made front-page news headlines.
Public concern over the sightings caused
President Harry Truman to step in and ask
for answers from those military officials who
witnessed the objects. According to various
International News Service stories, on July
29, 1952, President Truman’s concern may
have possibly resulted in an order to shoot
down the UFOs, resulting in one news story
concluding that pilots were unable to get
close enough to take a shot at a “flying
saucer,” as the objects would disappear
or speed away as soon as an interceptor
approached, sometimes at a speed of “as
much as a thousand miles an hour.”
To answer questions about the bizarre
sightings, U.S. Air Force Generals John
Samford and Roger Ramey held a press
conference at the Pentagon on July 29,
1952. Samford credited the sightings
to stars or meteors, as explained by
the temperature inversion present over
the Washington air on both nights. He
concluded that there was no threat posed
to national security. The explanations
given at the press conference were
immediately criticized by eyewitnesses,
UFO researchers, air force personnel, and
the United States Weather Bureau.
Whatever the cause of the strange objects
in the sky in July 1952, the Washington UFO
flap remains one of the most well-known
UFO mass sightings to date.

The ancient practice of storytelling is prominent in virtually
every culture across the globe. It has endured for centuries
and is perhaps most prevalent in the Native communities
spanning North America. This rich oral tradition of
storytelling has been used as a method for passing on history,
cultural values, and lessons for generations. But the oral stories
are not the only evidence of the ancient ancestors’ teachings; the
soils of North America are rich with ancient ruins, petroglyphs, and
remnants from these societies who relied heavily on cosmology to
support their day-to-day lives.
There are more than four-thousand Native American tribes in
the United States today. And although aspects of culture, dress,
and religious practices vary from tribe to tribe, seeing a level of
similarity exist in their myths and practices is not uncommon,
especially regarding creationism and visitors from the sky.
Many have speculated that, much like ancient civilizations from
around the world, these myths, petroglyphs, ancient structures, and
the important role stars play to the indigenous people of North America
indicate the possibility of visitation from inhabitants not of this Earth.

Navajo Rangers Investigate the Paranormal
Many Native Americans
still believe, and hold sacred,
the idea of spiritual and
otherworldly forces. This
revered respect for the
unknown exists today at
an official law enforcement
agency that actively
investigates reports of the
paranormal: the Navajo Nation
Rangers. While most official
organizations tend to scoff
at reports of unusual lights in
the sky or unknown creatures
in the woods, the Rangers
have taken another approach,
treating these cases like
they would any other—with
professionalism and respect.
Earlier this year, retired
Lieutenant John Dover sat
down with the CBS affiliate in
Phoenix, KPHO, and shared
exclusive case files from the
Rangers’ investigations. One
case provided the officers
with solid testimony—A
mother and daughter
described a mass of lights
floating over uninhabited
reservation land in January
2012. As they watched, the
lights blinked out after a few
seconds, followed by a sonic
boom, a black domed craft,
and the entire town of Chinle,
Arizona losing power.
While the Rangers only
investigate cases on the
reservation, their dedication
is a first step in the right
direction. We can only
hope that more official law
enforcement organizations

Creationism Myths
and Spiritual Beginnings
Some historians believe that the Paleo-Indians traversed onto the North
American continent by way of a land bridge known as Beringia, which
connected Eurasia and the Americas many thousands of years ago.
According to Gordon Willey and Phillip Phillips, authors of Method and
Theory in American Archaeology, these Paleo-Indians spread out across the
land and separated into various distinct groups. But the oral histories of the
Native Americans tell another tale; namely, that they have existed on this
continent since their beginning, a belief that is supported by an abundance
of creation stories.
Four major stars represent gods in the Pawnee creation story. Morning
Star and Evening Star mated to create the first human girl, who was then
sent to Earth followed by the son of Moon and Sun. The two then married
and began to populate the Earth. Von Del Chamberlain, an astronomer who
studied the Skidi, brought this idea to life in his book, When Stars Came
Down to Earth: Cosmology of the Skidi Pawnee Indians of North America.
He explains, “Where most other Indian groups supposed their origins to
have been from the earth, the Skidi looked overhead to find their ancestors.”
Other tribes exhibit similar mythology with stars representing gods such as
Sotuknang, the “sky king,” who was said to have created the nine worlds in
Hopi mythology.
The Pueblo tribes of the Southwest, including the Hopi and the Zuni,
share a belief in the Kachina Society. They believe the Kachinas (or
Katsinas) were mystical beings that originated from the sky. Evidence of
these masked figures has been traced as far back as 1300 A.D. The Pueblo
tribes believe that the Kachinas travel to Earth in order to teach people
about morality, agriculture, and the laws of the land. These “beings” were
known to physically interact with the tribes. Clifford Mahooty, a Zuni elder
and a member of the Kachina Society, explained to Open Minds that,
according to the Kachina Priesthood, “Original visitors were the actual
beings that came from different parts of the universe; it’s like Star Trek
where they appeared from a different dimension and then disappeared
again.” He further speculated that the depiction of the intricate masks of
the Kachinas could be representative of space helmets that allowed them to
travel through the atmosphere.
Various native beliefs and their depictions of cataclysmic events ruled
by gods in the sky mimic scores of other religions around the globe. The
theoretical idea that these gods are in fact extraterrestrial beings is pondered
by researchers and historians alike.

Artifacts
Depictions of otherworldly beings,
sky travel, and cosmic renditions
are not uncommon in the artifacts
covering the Southwest and the
Great Plains. While an advanced
understanding of cosmology
does in no way prove that contact
from another planet occurred or
is occurring among these tribes,
archaeoastronomical discoveries
continue to hint at this possibility.
Along the canyon walls of Sego
Canyon in Utah, petroglyphs of what
appear to be ant-like creatures line the
walls. They have large heads, bulbous
eyes, and quite often are depicted
with antennas. The legends of the
“Ant People” describe a benevolent
race that approached the Hopi people
and informed them that they had
come from the skies many years ago,
only to be led underground when the
surface of the Earth was destroyed.
When the Hopis faced a similar threat,
the “Ant People” shielded them from
the destruction until it was safe to
return again. Southwestern author
and historian Frank Waters discussed
other distinct Hopi petroglyphs of
note in his book, Mexico Mystique:
The Coming Sixth World of
Consciousness:

Mishongnovi an ancient petroglyph
depicts a dome-shaped object
resting on an arrow which
represents travel through space,
and the head of a Hopi maiden who
represents pristine purity. As the
Hopis believe that other planets
are inhabited, this petroglyph
represents paatuwvota or a “flying
shield” similar to a “flying saucer”
that came here in the Beginning. So
now at the End the sacred ones will
arrive from another planet, said to
be Venus, by flying saucers. Many
Hopi traditionalists recently have
reported seeing flying saucers, all
piloted by beings they call kachinas.
Cosmology was an extremely
important facet in the Pawnee tribes
of the Great Plains. Their daily lives,
ceremonies, and planting schedules
all revolved around their celestial
understanding. They arranged their
lodges in a pattern that reflected
particular star groupings above,
with their doors facing east to the
morning sun. It is their belief that
they descended from the stars—
many claim in fact that they were
descendants from the Pleiades, which
is an open star cluster located in the
constellation of Taurus. Dr. John Mack,
the late Harvard psychiatrist and a
celebrated researcher in the field of
extraterrestrial abduction, discussed
this shared mindset of the Plains
tribes in Passport to the Cosmos. Dr.
Mack explained, “The Cherokee and
the Lakota/Dakota believe that they
are descended from the star people,
specifically from the ‘seven sister’
constellation or Pleiades.” Evidence
of their intricate knowledge of the
skies can be seen today at the Field
Museum of Natural History in Chicago,
Illinois—A star chart from the Skidi
Pawnee created around 1700 A.D.
illustrates various constellations in
the sky including what appears to be
Corona Borealis, the Milky Way, and
Ursa Major, among others.
Another astronomical discovery
was found ten thousand feet atop an
isolated mountain in Wyoming. The
Bighorn Medicine Wheel could be
considered the Stonehenge of the
Plains Indians. The structure, which
is only accessible two months out of
the year due to snow, was apparently
constructed sometime between
1200 to 1700 A.D. Archaeological
studies had done little to solidify the
meaning and purpose of the stone
structure, but in 1972, astronomer
John Eddy discovered that the wheel
may have served as a sophisticated,
yet extremely simple, astronomical
observatory used to mark the summer
solstice and to watch the movement
of the stars Aldebaran, Rigel, and
Sirius.
Some native people believe that
the Great Serpent Mound in Ohio,
a 1,348-foot-long, three-foot-high
prehistoric effigy mound located on
the plateau of the Serpent Mound
crater, was influenced by powers
outside of the human existence.
Mahooty expressed to Open Minds his
belief that the builders of the mound
were Indian tribes that had contact
with the extraterrestrials. Perhaps this
ancient Native American ceremonial
structure served as a point of
communication with advanced beings.

Legends
There is an overabundance of symbolism in the
mythological stories, laced with undertones of
otherworldly abduction, breeding with beings from
the sky, crop circles, and sightings of unidentified
flying craft.
A Sioux legend that some researchers speculate
is a UFO sighting exists in an 1871 manuscript by
George P. Belden titled, Twelve Years Among the Wild
Indians of the Plains. The legend speaks of a young
hunter who discovers a trodden-down circular path
made by dainty feet, which was devoid of any path
leading to or from the circle. The legend provides
that the hunter heard a sweet melody coming from a
speck in the sky, which grew louder as it approached
the Earth.
Lower and lower came this magic car, with its
precious freight until it rested exactly in the center
of the ring formed by the mysterious path. Scarcely
had it touched the ground, when twelve maidens
sprang out and began to dance around the circle,
and to strike a shining ball from one to another . . .
But no sooner did the maidens see him, than they
all sprang nimbly into the basket, and were sped,
with the quickness of thought, back to the skies
and out of sight.
Frequently, themes of abduction can be found
hidden in these intricate myths. One such tale from
the Blackfoot tribe is that of Morning Star and
Feather Woman. The legend tells of an Indian named
Feather Woman who falls in love with a star. The star
comes to Earth and convinces her to leave her people
and live with him among the Star People. When
Feather Woman disobeys Father Sky, she is sent
from the land of the Star People back to Earth, where
her tribe was surprised to see their lost daughter
reappear clutching her son, Star Boy.
At the 2011 International UFO Congress, Rainbow
Eagle, an Okla-Choctaw American Indian and
storyteller, recalled the tale of Underwater Panther.
Underwater Panther came out of the water and
began dragging the natives back into the water. The
elders watched on in fear as a rigid eagle descended
from the sky, shot lightning beams out of its eyes
at Underwater Panther, and then proceeded to
hover over the tribe and communicate to them
telepathically. Countless native myths speak of
beings riding clams in the sky, flying shields (or
paatuwvota), rigid eagles, and flying copper houses.
This has led various researchers to conclude that
these symbols were put in place to describe flying
craft that the native people had seen but had no
words to describe. Similarly, the Utes, Nez Perces,
and Flatheads provided descriptions of different
types of beings small in stature, seeming to never
age and possessing magical qualities.

Conclusion
It is evident that Native American cultures
had an astute understanding of astronomy
and viewed it as a crucial guide to their daily
lives and ceremonies. Did this advanced
knowledge come from the skies, or did their
star knowledge develop from years of studying
the vast sky before the days of artificial lighting
flooded the land?
While we may never know or understand
what the ancient Native Americans saw, we can
speculate based on cave drawings, depictions
in art, and modern marvels they left behind
that these legends could be an indication of
something larger, possibly even a connection
with an extraterrestrial group of beings.

Cosmology and
the Qur’an
It was the task of Dr. Zaghloul El-
Naggar to blend some of the topics of
the GCF session with the teachings
of Islam in his presentation titled,
“Creation, Destruction, and Recreation
of the Universe as Revealed in the
Glorious Qur’an.” Dr. El-Naggar is
well-qualified for this task based on
his position as the chairman of the
Committee on Scientific Notions in
the Glorious Qur’an at the Supreme
Council of Islamic Affairs in Cairo,
Egypt. El-Naggar discussed a number
of verses from the Qur’an dealing with
astronomy and cosmology, pointing
out there was no contradiction
between science and Islam.
Furthermore, Dr. El-Naggar noted how
the Qur’an actually anticipated many
concepts in modern astrophysics and
cosmology. Some of the astronomical
verses from the Qur’an cited by Dr. El-
Naggar include:
And the firmament We have
built with might, and verily We are
(currently) expanding it. (51:47)
Haven’t the unbelievers
seen that the heavens and the
earth were (initially) gathered
together [condensed in one initial
singularity], and then We clove
them asunder. (21:30)
The day (will come) when We roll
up the heaven in the same way a
scroll rolls up its writings (books);
as We started the first creation,
We repeat it (in exactly the same
manner); a promise upon us (We
have undertaken), verily We were to
fulfill. (21:10)
The day (will come) when the
earth is replaced by a different earth,
and so are the heavens. (14:48)
Dr. El-Naggar’s presentation is
not the first time that an academic
scholar pointed out such verses
in the Qur’an. A similar effort was
undertaken years earlier by a Turkish
scholar, Dr. Haluk Nurbaki, in a series
of booklets titled, Verses from the
Holy Qur’an and the Facts of Science,
in which he discussed the expanding
universe, black holes, and quasars, as
well as scientific topics unrelated to
astronomy. One of Dr. Nurbaki’s more
interesting interpretations pertained
to Verse 15, Chapter 37 (The Ranks).
That verse proclaimed, “He is the
Lord of the heavens and the earth,
and all that lies between them; He is
the Lord of the Easts.” Dr. Nurbaki
analyzed these verses in detail,
particularly the cryptic reference to
the “Lord of the Easts”:
The Qur’an
itself provides
only a
sketchy
reference
to the night
journey.
The point is that “the Easts” are
proclaimed as a set of directions,
quite apart from the existents we
refer to as the earth and the sky. With
this verse, God draws our attention
to other directions and dimensions,
indicating the existence of worlds
and spaces composed of dimensions
other than the physical world we are
familiar with. In a sense, He says: “I
am the Lord of the Easts” in order
to introduce the definition of infinite
dimensions, which contemporary
physics is just beginning to discover
. . . We can say that this verse clearly
heralds the existence of thousands of
spaces and worlds embedded in an
infinite-dimensional matrix.

After Muhammad reached the first
heaven, he continued on with visits
to the other six heavens. Afterwards,
Muhammad finally meets Allah in
the sacred house or temple in the
seventh heaven. After a long dialogue
with Allah, Muhammad returns to
the luminous ladder and descends
to the Temple in Jerusalem, where Al
Borak then flies him back to his house
in Mecca. According to tradition,
this night journey took place around
621 AD, just a short time before the
Prophet was expelled from Mecca
in 622 and traveled to Medina, a key
event in Islam known as the Hijra
which marks the beginning of the
Muslim calendar.
One of the most fascinating aspects
of the night journey is the concept of
a multiple time continuum. If taken
literally—and this is a matter of
contention among Muslim scholars—
it’s pretty obvious that the whole
experience of Muhammad’s travels
from Mecca to Jerusalem, then to the
seven heavens, and finally engaging
in conversations with the Biblical
prophets and Allah, should have taken
a good deal of time. Yet, upon his
return to Mecca, it seemed as if no
time had elapsed at all.
Needless to say, the Mi’raj has
been hotly debated and interpreted
by Muslim scholars since the days
when Muhammad was still alive. In
fact, a book by Christine Gruber and
Frederick Colby titled, The Prophet’s
Ascension: Cross-Cultural Encounters
with the Islamic Mi’raj Tales, states
that “even the earliest of Muslim
historical accounts of Muhammad’s

The Prophet
Muhammad’s
Night Journey
One of the most cryptic and
mysterious episodes in the Qur’an
is Sura 17, known as “The Night
Journey,” which alludes to the
prophet Muhammad’s journey to
the heavens known in the Islamic
medieval tradition as the Mi’raj
(literally translating to “ladder,” or
“ascension”). The Qur’an itself
provides only a sketchy reference to
the night journey at the beginning of
the chapter: “Glory be to Him who
made His servants (Archangel Gabriel
and Prophet Mohammed) go by night
from the Sacred Temple (Jerusalem)
to the farther Temple (Heaven) whose
surroundings We have blessed, that
We might show him some of Our
signs. He alone hears and observes
all.” The rest of Sura 17 is essentially
made by Allah (or, God) containing the
basic tenets of the Islamic faith.
While the Qur’an’s description of
the night journey is very brief, the
medieval Islamic tradition expanded
this episode into a cosmic journey full
of colorful details, including meeting
many of the Biblical prophets as well
as Jesus (who is actually revered
as a prophet in Islam, but not the
Messiah as he is in Christianity).
The full account is described by
American writer Washington Irving in
his classic biography, Mahomet and
Needless

been hotly
debated and
interpreted
by Muslim
scholars
since the
days when
Muhammad
was still alive.

Al-Bokhari, and Abu Hurairah.
According to the Arab medieval
tradition, Muhammad is awaken in
his house in Mecca by the Archangel
Gabriel (who had revealed the
Qur’an to Muhammad over a period
of two decades) and then taken to
the Temple in Jerusalem (or, the
Holy Temple, which is the current
site of the Dome of the Rock) on a
supernatural being referred to as Al
Borak (or, Al Buraq). After visiting
the Temple, Muhammad ascended
to the heavens in “a ladder of light.”
Irving described Al Borak as “unlike
any animal he had ever seen.” He
goes on to say “It had a human
face, but the cheeks of a horse; its
eyes were as jacinths and radiant
as stars. It had eagle’s wings all
glittering with rays of light; and its
whole form was resplendent with
gems and precious stones.”
The late Spanish author Antonio
Ribera discussed this episode within
the ufological context in his 1973
book, El Gran Enigma de los Platillos
Volantes (The Great Enigma of Flying
Saucers). Ribera points out that one
of the descriptions of Al Borak was
its “silvery gray” color and also that
“it flew so fast that the eyesight could
hardly keep up with it.” The celestial
steed took the Prophet in a flash
to the Temple in Jerusalem where
Muhammad fastened Al Borak to
a ring and then met with Abraham,
Moses, and Isa (Jesus). Irving picks
up the story from there:
After he had prayed in company
with them for a time, a ladder of
light was let down from heaven,
until the lower end rested on the
Shakra, or foundation stone of the
sacred house, being the stone of
Jacob. Aided by the angel Gabriel,
[Muhammad] ascended this ladder
with the rapidity of lightning.

narrative provoked differences of
opinion among the Muslims of the
formative period.”
Aside from its spiritual significance,
Muhammad’s ride on Al Borak and
his heavenly ascension became
favorite subjects for medieval Islamic
miniaturists, and there are literally
dozens of beautiful paintings and
miniatures portraying this episode.
The Jinn-Qur’anic
Explanation
for UFOs?
An additional aspect of the Holy
Qur’an that may be linked to the
subject of UFOs and extraterrestrials,
a case that has been noted not only
by Muslims looking at the ufological
literature but even by non-Muslim
ufologists, is the matter of the Jinn (or,
Djinn), better known in the West as
genies. Everyone has heard the story
of Aladdin and the magic lamp from
the classic medieval series of tales,
One Thousand and One Nights (or,
The Arabian Nights). The Jinn appear
throughout these stories, which also
contain flying carpets, serpent beings,
and other supernatural or paranormal
traits that can be linked to ufology
(although they probably shouldn’t be
taken literally because they are clearly
included in a work of fiction). The Jinn,
however, appear in the Qur’an, which
includes an entire chapter titled, “The
Jinn,” devoted to these entities.

Besides Man there clearly existed another form of
intelligent life as explained in the Koran. Where is this
life? If they have interacted with humans in the past,
is it still interacting today? The UFO Phenomenon
seem to be the most likely candidate of that intelligent
life referred to in the Koran as the Jinn . . . If parallel
universes do exist, then it is teeming with intelligent life
known as Jinn. It is our conclusion that the Jinn and the
UFO entities are the same. More detailed analysis would
be required to scientifically prove their point of origin.

Whenever people with a Muslim background have
analyzed UFO literature—particularly cases of close
encounters of the third kind and alien abductions—
they are instantly reminded of the Jinn and their many
supernatural tricks. The Qur’an identifies the Jinn as part
of Allah’s creation and points out that there are good Jinn
and evil Jinn.
The Encyclopedia of Islam explains that, according to the
Muslim tradition, Jinn are “conception bodies composed
of vapour or flame, intelligent, imperceptible to our senses,
capable of appearing under different forms and of carrying
out heavy labours. They were created of smokeless flame
. . . while mankind and the angels, the other two classes
of intelligent beings, were created of clay and light.”
Additionally, “They are capable of salvation; Muhammad
was sent to them as well as to mankind; some will enter
Paradise while others will be cast into the fire of hell.”
When discussing specifically the beliefs related to the
Jinn prevalent in Muslim India, the The Encyclopedia of
Islam states that four types of Jinn are mentioned in the
Qur’an: (i) aerial creatures without any physical form, (ii)
snake-like creatures, (iii) those who shall be subjected to
the same process of divine dispensation on the Day of
Judgment as human beings, and (iv) creatures with beastlike
features.
There are clear parallels between traditional stories of
Jinn in Muslim societies and contemporary cases dealing
with so-called alien entities. This link has been noted by
many researchers, but the first to note this connection was
probably the Malaysian ufologist Ahmad Jamaludin, author
of “A Summary of Unidentified Flying Objects and Related
Events in Malaysia (1950-1980)” published in 1981. Most
of Jamaludin’s book was devoted to UFO sightings and
close-encounter cases in Malaysia, but at the very end
of the book is an appendix titled, “Search for an Answer
from the Koran to the UFO Problem: Are UFO Occupants
Dimensional Entities Known as Jinn?” Jamaludin noted
in this appendix that in searching the Qur’an for answers
regarding the UFO mystery, “Besides Man, two other
intelligences [were] mentioned to exist. These are Angels
and a class known as Jinn. Since the UFO entity reports
. . . [do] not suggest the intervention of Angels, we shall
therefore concentrate on the intelligence called Jinn.”
Jamaludin reproduced a chart comparing the
characteristics of Jinn and UFO entities, which show
uncanny similarities. After briefly analyzing these
characteristics, drawing both from the UFO literature and
the Qur’anic and Islamic traditions, Jamaludin explained:

The Jinn/UFO occupants’ equivalency was also
endorsed by an Islamic Sufi leader from Turkey, Sheikh
Nãzim Effendi of the Naqshbandi Order of Dervishes,
during a lecture in London in 1985. According to a short
article published in Flying Saucer Review, when asked
about UFOs, Effendi said that the Jinn (who shared the
planet with mankind but were much older than man) held
mankind “in total subjection and enslavement, deliberately
causing all manner of wars and strife and disasters and
disturbances, while sleeping mankind remains blissfully
unaware of what is happening to it, and what its own true
situation is.”
A well-known English ufologist, the late Gordon
Creighton, who was the editor and publisher of Flying
Saucer Review for decades, published a controversial
article in his magazine in 1983, “A Brief Account of the True
Nature of the ‘UFO Entities’,” in which he basically reached
the same conclusion as Jamaludin. Like Jamaludin,
Creighton discussed the three categories of beings
mentioned in the Qur’an—angels made of light, Jinn made
of fire, and mankind made of clay. Creighton stated:
The second category, however, and the one with
which we are here concerned, is the category of those
beings (created before man was) who are referred to
collectively in Arabic as Al-Jinn. Although there is some
dispute about it among Arab grammarians, most of their
lexicologists seem to hold that the word derives—as
Arabic words almost invariably do—from a verb-root,
namely janna, “to hide or to conceal”—indeed a very
fitting derivation for the name of these creatures.
. . . .
Maybe the best way we can start to visualize these
matters is by thinking of the Jinns as being very close
indeed to us and yet at the same time somehow very
far from us. In other words, on some other dimension,

or in some other Space/Time framework, “right here,” or
maybe in a world of anti-matter right here, or occupying
as it were some other Universe that is here, behind
Alice’s mirror: “a mirror-universe on the other side of the
Space-Time Continuum” as it has been neatly put by
some investigators.
Creighton compared the Jinn’s behavior to UFO entities
but also incorporated the more modern tradition of the
great Austrian mystic and visionary Dr. Rudolf Steiner
(1861-1925), the founder of the Anthroposophical Society.
Dr. Steiner spoke of the “Forces of Ahriman” (a term
he took from the Zoroastrian religion of ancient Persia)
that exist in the “inner planes” and influence mankind
negatively unless they are counteracted by the “Forces of
Light.” Creighton’s essay was ignored by most Western
ufologists but was eventually reprinted in the Flying Saucer
Review in 1988. Among the many people who responded
to Creighton’s article was Dr. Adil Mosa Al-Nahhas, who
in 1984 was head of the department of nuclear medicine
at the Institute of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine in
Baghdad, Iraq. Dr. Al-Nahhas wrote a long letter to
Creighton in March 1984 which stated in part: “If you
want my opinion, I think these ‘things’ either consist of, or
utilize, some kind of energy yet unknown to us, probably
of unthinkable power and devastating impact, which
needs a certain time-space-recipient setting of unknown
combination to be demonstrable.”
Dr. Al-Nahhas also mentioned a couple of then recent
UFO sightings in the Arabian region; one reported in the
United Arab Emirates in November 1983 and a second
“over the Iraqi city of Babil, which surrounds the ruins
of ancient Babylon (100 km from Baghdad).” The Iraqi
nuclear scientist went on to explain that “four witnesses,
located at different points, all saw a luminous disc which
remained for a short while in the sky and then vanished at
tremendous speed.”
Conclusion
Like other major religions, Islam offers some
interesting teachings that could help us to better
understand potential connections to the UFO mystery,
regardless of our own religious or non-religious
affiliation. Whether the Jinn provide a full explanation
to alien encounters remains to be proven of course,
but that this aspect of the Islamic tradition can give
us an important clue to help unravel the enigma
seems not only possible but likely. Hopefully, the
important outer space session held at the Global
Competitiveness Forum in Saudi Arabia will encourage
Muslims throughout the world to study and document
this intriguing phenomenon.

Within seconds, two fellow
UFO spotters shine
handheld laser beams
towards the greenish light, and for
a second, the aerial object flashes a
bright green pulse back at us, then
continues on its way. James Gilliland
calls the pulse of light a “power
up”—he thinks it’s the craft’s way of
greeting us. Minutes later, another
dull light approaches erratically from
the west and heads east, appearing
to dodge the laser beams. Then, we
spot yet another light moving steadily
across the sky. The entire spectacle
is like something from a science
fiction movie.
Sixty-year-old James Gilliland, the
owner of the seventy-acre ECETI
satellites will appear in various
segments of the night sky. On one
occasion, Gilliland invited the person
who hosts the website to the ranch,
and the individual was genuinely
surprised that lights were passing
overhead despite his calculations that
the sky should have been clear of
satellites that night.
In addition to satellites,
“conventional aircraft” can also
be scratched from the list of
explanations. None of the mysterious
lights at the ECETI Ranch have
flashing strobe lights or the wingmounted
searchlights of such
aircraft. The first object I observed
was well within the range of the
handheld laser beams—way too low
to be a terrestrial aircraft—and was
completely silent. Being out in the
countryside, it was very easy to hear
whether the object made any noise
at all.
My next thought was that maybe
guests have left with similar thoughts
ever since Gilliland built his ranch here
twenty-five years ago.
At one point during the night, I am
handed a night vision scope and an
infrared lamp and told to “watch the
orbs.” Sure enough, within seconds
I see dozens of glowing orbs in the
infrared lamp’s beam. Surprised, I
looked away from the scope into the
pitch black night for a few seconds,
and the orbs were definitely not
visible to the naked eye.
“Maybe they’re dust,” I thought.
But dust does not act like these orbs;
dust would generally blow in the same
direction. Some of the orbs glowed
brightly, some faintly, but they all
moved haphazardly in all directions.
Some orbs disappeared into the
ground. A few bright orbs zoomed
towards me, raced between the other
viewers, and then flew away as if
intelligently controlled.

Ranch located twenty miles north
of the Columbia River Gorge in the
small valley hamlet of Trout Lake,
Washington, is not the least bit
phased by this strange activity. In
fact, he sees similar occurrences
every night and says that the entities
respond to human desire to
observe them.
But, what could these lights
be? At first, I thought that perhaps
the moving lights were satellites,
but Gilliland explained why that
suggestion was incorrect. He told me
that he regularly monitors the website,
www.heavens-above.com, which
lists the times during which individual

the lights were insects. But, bugs
don’t light up or behave like the
objects I saw that night. Certainly,
bugs don’t respond to lasers by
flashing and pulsing light back.
Gilliland informed me that dozens
of MUFON investigators, air traffic
controllers, air force commanders,
pilots, CIA members, NASA scientists,
and Boeing engineers have visited the
ranch, observed the lights, and left
completely mystified. Comments such
as, “They’re certainly nothing like
what I have worked on,” or “Nothing
we have can do that,” are typical
of the bewildered and often dazed
viewers. Several thousand other
Gilliland and his visitors have also
reportedly seen motherships as large
as one mile across, black triangles
the size of football fields, golden
flying pyramids (which broke up into
three different craft and shadowed
an air force plane), disc-shaped
craft with antenna atop them—you
name it, they’ve seen it. Sometimes,
the craft break up into two or three
smaller objects and then disappear
or dematerialize. And, according to
Gilliland, the craft appear in daytime
as well as night.
Earlier that evening, I arrived at
the ranch after a five hour drive from
Seattle. Upon arriving, I was stunned

The tourist brochure for Mount
Adams includes superlatives
like, “pristine,” “stunning,” and
“breathtaking,” which all speak the
truth in describing this enormous
mountain that is the centerpiece
and focus of the mysterious lights
that appear almost nightly on its
south side and over the surrounding
terrain. In fact, the drive to the ECETI
Ranch is worth it just to see this
natural beauty, let alone to witness
unexplainable UFO activity.
The ECETI Ranch is a sprawling,
eclectic array of buildings arranged
haphazardly between clusters of
tall, shady pine trees that sit atop
small dirt-covered basalt outcrops.
Gilliland’s house is made from an
old wooden bridge that was retired
from service twenty-five years ago.
In addition to the house, there is a
multi-roomed facility, topped by a
pyramid; three small hexagonal-sided
cabins; a large meeting room that
equates roughly to a barn; a wigwam

at one end of the skywatch field; a
purple two-story viewing platform
on the edge of the skywatch field; a
chicken coop; a field that is the home
to five yaks; an orchard; and other
farming outbuildings. Bodhisattvas
and statues of angels decorate the
gardens around the ranch, peering at
visitors as they walk by.
The people who come to camp or
stay on the farm as Gilliland’s guests
are a varied bunch. Most come out
here because they are genuinely
interested in seeing the strange lights
for themselves. Others come to
experience some level of profound
spirituality. For example, while I was
at the ranch, I met three women who
drove from Wisconsin to spend a few
nights here after hearing about it from
New Agers back home. Additionally,
I encountered two amiable guys
who left their wives and families in
Portland, Oregon, to camp here for
a night and experience the strange
lights. Others who visit the ranch
are regulars who come at every
opportunity to see the lights they have
come to love.
As for Gilliland himself, certainly,
some of his experiences and beliefs
are on the fringe. For example, he
claims to be able to bilocate. When I
asked him if “bilocating” was similar
to remote viewing, he responded,
“This is way past remote viewing.”
He also claims to receive telepathic
messages from extraterrestrial
entities, and he believes he has
been chosen as an earthly contact.
According to Gilliland, he has been
chosen because his healthy and
spiritual ranch lifestyle lives up to the
alien’s protocols for contact. Gilliland
also claims to have been taken in the

named Cazekiel—who is is channeled
by by Gilliland. Cazekial provided
Gilliland with with an an alternative version of of
Earth’s history and and alternative
insight as as to to who who really really runs runs our our
society as as well well as as mankind’s place place in in
the the universe.
What What drew drew Gilliland to to this this area? area?
For For one one thing, Mount Adams is a is UFO a UFO
day, day, after after having stayed up up the the entire entire
previous evening watching the the skies.

contrails, satellites, shooting stars, stars,
an an orbiting space station, car car
lights, swamp gas, gas, gaggles of of flying flying
geese, or or any any of of the the myriad other other
explanations put put forward by by the the
debunkers? Or, Or, were were they they something
else else of of unknown origin? Who Who knows?
But But I know I know I saw I saw three three strangely
behaving objects, and and it was it was cool. cool.
Perhaps I’m I’m better off off leaving it it
at that. that.
Although many many people have have
challenged the the sightings at at the the ECETI
Ranch, no no one one has has been been able able to to
satisfactorily explain these these lights lights and and
craft craft in in terrestrial terms. To To those those who who
scoff, scoff, Gilliland offers an an invitation:
“Come to to our our ranch and and see see for for
yourself.” I know I know one one thing; I will I will
be be back. back.

The Hungarian-American Colonel Colman von Keviczky was one of the
most colorful and engaging internaltional ufologists of the old guard.

He is not as well known to the Internet
era because only a small portion of
his work can be found on the web.
Nor is he a well-known writer, mainly
because commercial editions of his
work appeared only in Japanese and
Hungarian print. And yet in the period
between the 1960s and late 1990s,
von Keviczky was a frequent speaker
at conferences worldwide including
Japan, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, and
Hungary. Von Keviczky also interacted
and corresponded with a number of
prominent figures in the political and
scientific worlds, including participating
in a 1983 briefing with the president
of Austria, Dr. Ralph Kirchlagger, and
giving a presentation to the House of
Lords’ UFO Study Group in 1980.
Although he lived in Queens,
New York for over thirty years, von
Keviczky was known better abroad.
Nevertheless, for decades he remained
a regular fixture of New York City’s
UFO community and an obligatory
stop for out-of-town ufologists. He sent
voluminous memoranda to multiple
U.S. presidents from Gerald Ford to Bill
Clinton; this documentation can now
be found in the various presidential
libraries. In the late 1970s, he opened
his vast archive of official documents
and UFO photos to the global network
of researchers assisting the formation
of the Intercontinental UFO Research
and Analytic Network (ICUFON), a small
organization he launched in 1966.
Colman von Keviczky was born
in 1909 in the waning days of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. The first
half of his life was devoted entirely to
his military and photography career,
and the second half to ufology. He
studied at the historical Ludovica
Royal Hungarian Military University
in Budapest, graduating in 1932 with
a master’s degree in military science
and engineering. Promoted to a major
in the Hungarian Army in 1938, he
founded and became, until 1945,
the first chief of the Audio-Visual
Military Education Department at the
Hungarian Army General Staff. After
the war, Colman worked until 1952
for the 3rd U.S. Army Constabulary
in Heidelberg, Germany, as a motion
picture director, cameraman, and
public relations officer, after which he
immigrated to the United States.

saucer wave of 1952 that von Keviczky
says, “alerted [his] military eye,” and
led him to begin collecting UFO reports
and photos. Although he was an
American citizen for many years, von
Keviczky’s military rank was officially
recognized by the post-communist
Hungarian government, which gave
him a retroactive promotion to full
colonel. He was also a member of
the American Institute of Aeronautics
and Astronautics (AIAA).
Bringing UFOs to the
United Nations
Colonel von Keviczky will go down
in history as the very first researcher
to bring the UFO issue to the United
Nations. In 1964, von Keviczky
became a member of the UN Office
of Public Information’s (OPI) Photo
and Exhibit Department as a motion
picture and photo technician. In June
1965, he made his first proposal to
the OPI during which he informed OPI
that because “the UFO problem is
international and UFOs are observed
all over the world, it should be viewed
by the UN because through the UN we
could collect all the necessary data and
computerize all the data against what
we are facing.” That proposal didn’t go
anywhere, but in February 1966, von
Keviczky met the UN Secretary-General
U Thant, who was favorable toward
the subject and allowed von Keviczky
to elaborate further on the UN UFO
project. Unfortunately for von Keviczky,
he leaked the story to the press, where
it was quickly picked up by the NY Daily
News on February 8 in an article titled,
“Aide Tells UN: Prepare for Visitors from
Outer Space.” The story then spread
through the newswires to dozens of
papers around the world. Von Keviczky
claimed that this led to his firing
from the UN staff as a direct result of
pressure from the American delegation.
Undaunted by this first defeat, later
that year von Keviczky decided to
launch ICUFON, whose purpose was
to act as a lobbying group to establish
a UFO project at the UN. This led
to a number of initiatives, the most
significant of which was the drafting
of the so-called Mainz UFO resolution,
prepared by von Keviczky in close
collaboration with Hermann Oberth,
the famous German pioneer of rocketry
and space travel. A July 28, 1966 letter
from Oberth to von Kevizky explains
that, “your proposals seem [to] me
as the only logical [step] we can do in
this situation in the case that UFO’s
are strange spaceships indeed. By

An Exclusive Interview with General Ricardo Bermúdez:
Director of Chile’s Official UFO Committee

Anomalous Phenomena (CEFAA),
released an extraordinary set of
multiple videos taken during an
important daytime ceremony for the
Chilean Air Force (FACH). The incident
occurred at the air force academy
at El Bosque Air Base in Santiago,
on the morning of November 4,
2010. The El Bosque ceremony was
attended by such important people
as the president of Chile, the cabinet,
military brass (including General
Bermúdez), and diplomatic corps.
The story was picked up quickly by
the Chilean press and followed by
extensive international web coverage
after journalist Leslie Kean published
a piece in the Huffington Post on
the same day. General Bermúdez
discussed the event in detail during
his historic presentation at the 2012
International UFO Congress (IUFOC)
in Fountain Hills, Arizona, in late
February.
The CEFAA is quickly becoming
the world’s leader of “official ufology.”
Chile’s model of an official UFO
agency is unique in that it’s the only
country with a UFO bureau attached
to the civil aviation agency known
in Chile under the Spanish acronym
of DGAC (General Direction of Civil
Aeronautics). CEFAA was created in
late 1997 and began to function in
1998 when General Bermúdez took
his official post; it was part of his
duties as director of Chile’s Technical
School of Aeronautics, which is
responsible for training air traffic
controllers.
General Bermúdez is not your
typical ufologist in Chile or anywhere
else. He served in the FACH for many
years. He served first as a fighter
pilot, then rose in the ranks to subdirector
of Chile’s Air Force Academy,
after which he became commander
of the Third Air Brigade in southern
Chile and air attaché in London. After
his retirement from the FACH, he
transferred to the DGAC, where he
became the director of the Technical
School of Aeronautics and its incipient
UFO committee. He then resumed
the post of CEFAA director when the
committee was reactivated in 2010 as
a full-time investigation.

Antonio Huneeus (AH): Can you tell us about the
creation of the official committee that you preside over?
Ricardo Bermúdez (RB): The committee (CEFAA)
was created at the end of 1997 and began to function in
1998. After my retirement from the air force, I joined the
civil aviation agency and took post as the director of the
Technical School of Aeronautics, which included being
president of this committee. Back then, we only had a
partial amount of time dedicated to the committee, not like
now when we are devoted one hundred percent to [UFO]
investigations. The committee was later in recess for a few
years; it was reactivated in 2010 due to a number of cases
that occurred in the airways and also due to increased

happened with these investigations, especially since they
were aware that a committee had been created in 1997.
So that’s why this committee was reactivated in 2010, and
along with its reactivation came a new energy. We started
to work with universities, specialists, doctorates in various
fields, delegates from the armed forces, the uniformed
and civilian police, and with some serious [Chilean UFO]
investigators—they all worked together in the investigation
under our leadership naturally.
AH: Typically, how does the committee conduct its business?
RB: Our primary source of information comes from the
civil aviation agency; specifically, the conversations that
take place between pilots and the air traffic control centers
throughout the country. These are tape recordings, and
when something happens, like when a pilot sees something
and reports it, we investigate. That’s why one of our main
goals is to create awareness among pilots so that they can
report [UFO cases] and not fear being called crazy.
AH: Yes, traditionally, pilots didn’t report UFO sightings
so that their careers wouldn’t be harmed.

RB: Exactly. That used to be the case. But now that we
are working in a more serious manner, pilots have become
more open and the air traffic controllers themselves have
given us materials which previously they were afraid to
give us for fear of ridicule. That is our main source of
information, but we also receive reports from the civilian
population, and we try to satisfy their needs. We are able
to explain approximately 95% [of the cases received] and

we are left with 5%, of which more or less than 3% can be
catalogued as unidentified flying objects.
AH: Can you explain the conditions you required in order
to resume the job of directing CEFAA?
RB: I have the advantage that I was a member of
the Chilean Air Force, and when the director of [civil]
aeronautics invited me to put together the committee,
I gave him my conditions. My conditions were to work
with the universities, doctors, the armed forces, police
corps, and serious investigators. [This was something] not
happening in other countries.
AH: Will you give us a couple of the
more interesting reports investigated
by the committee in recent years?
RB: Well, one of the more
important cases is one that
happened last year (2011), the
Pelican case. Two aircraft arrived
in Santiago on different airways
and at the same time both pilots
reported seeing an object that
crossed their airway. Meanwhile, three
hundred nautical miles behind was
a navy airplane, which also reported
seeing the same object but stated
that the object came right up to their
aircraft, flying underneath them,
made a turn, and then crossed
the airway at their same
level. So within the airways,
multiple pilots are reporting
unidentified flying objects—
that’s why these cases are
being studied. As I said
in my [IUFOC] lecture, we
could be talking about the
same object, or possibly
two different objects. If it
was the same object, then
it was able to instantly
travel 300 miles; speeds
that are not possible
with [the technology] we
know. We interviewed
the six pilots, and all
six are in agreement as
to what they saw, thus
adding to the credibility
of their testimony.
AH: Do you also
have cases where a
UFO was detected
by radar?
RB: Yes. Another very interesting case is a radar detection
case from Punta Arenas in which the radar controller gave
a warning to the pilot that he had unidentified traffic four
miles ahead of him, at twelve o’clock. Four miles for a plane
moving at high speed can be compared to two or three
steps ahead on the ground; in other words, very close to the
airplane. The pilot saw the object and described it as a cloud
or something camouflaged inside a cloud. It was also seen
from the ground by the air controller, and the same pilot saw
it again after landing. Thus, we have multiple sightings of
the object. This case is particularly important because radar
detected the object. It is a very valuable case for us.
AH: Tell me about the multiple daytime video cases
during that important air force ceremony in 2010?

RB: The other case I presented [at the IUFOC] is the case
of El Bosque; this was the ceremony for the changing of the
commander in chief of the air force, which takes place every
four years. At the event, an aerial object appears to cross
the [aircraft] formations in different spots. The object moves
[back and forth] toward the aircraft. This happened with all
the aircraft formations that passed, and there were many,
including most of the materiel of the air force, the acrobatic
team of the Halcones (Falcons), the F-5s, the F-16s, other
combat aircraft, transport aircraft, helicopters . . .
AH: Was it a parade?
RB: An aerial and terrestrial parade.
AH: But nobody saw the UFO?
RB: No one saw it. I was there attending the ceremony but
I didn’t see anything either.
AH: And how was it that you received the material?
RB: Well, seven people nearby saw it—they were not
among the public audience, but in ENAER (Chile’s National
Enterprise of Aeronautics), which is our airplane factory.

parade—with different cameras of course, some with cell
phones, others with better cameras—and the [UFO] appears
in all the footage.
AH: Any other interesting cases you would like to share?
RB: We have an interesting case from March 2011. A pilot
and co-pilot aboard a police chopper [were returning] from
a police mission, when they saw, near the Tobalaba field (in
Santiago), over the Catholic University stadium, a big saucer
the size of the stadium. We are studying that case. [See
sidebar to the right for translation of the case report.]
AH: Can you tell me about CEFAA’s international relations?
RB: Well, we have signed an agreement with NARCAP
(the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous
Phenomena) here in the United States. We have relations
and are exchanging information with fourteen countries,
and we are expanding. CEFAA is close to signing an
agreement to exchange information with Sigma, the 3AF
organization (Aeronautical & Astronomical Association)
which is a very powerful organization in France. We also
have relations with radar controllers from the civil aviation
agencies in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador,
Argentina, and also with CRIDOVNI (Commission for the
Reception & Investigation of Reports of Unidentified Flying
Objects) in Uruguay. Lastly, we are working on relations
with England through Nick Pope.
The Police
Chopper Case
Five cases are recorded in a CEFAA
document titled, “Summary of Unsolved
Aeronautical Cases 2010-2012.” Case #4 is
the event involving a Chilean police helicopter
mentioned by General Bermúdez. The crew
of the helicopter reported a huge UFO over
Santiago on February 5, 2011. Here is the
complete translation of that case:

Description: A helicopter from the police air
brigade was conducting a patrol flight over
the city when, in a sector south of Cerro San
Cristóbal (San Cristóbal Hill), they visualized
an object in the southeastern direction.
According to the description by one of the
members of the crew, they saw an “oval
object of great dimensions, over the sector
San Carlos de Apoquindo, which was moving
slowly in a southern direction. It had three
flashing lights of white, blue and red colors.”
The crew consulted with ACC (Control Center
Area) with frequency 122.4 if there was any
traffic in the sector; the response was negative.
Action taken: The pilot and co-pilot were
requested to complete the questionnaire of
their report. DASA (Chile’s department of
airfields and aviation services) was asked to
locate tapes of communications between the
aircraft and ACC and a copy of a cassette of
this [communication] was obtained. There is no
register of an astronomic event or a satellite.
AH: So there is already a functioning official network?
RB: Exactly.
AH: But you want to create something more solid through
the United Nations, right?

RB: Well, that is my personal preference. I’d say that in

possessed by all countries, a
department or a unit in the United
Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs
should be established so we can
gather all the information and take a
course of action that will show how
to study better and know more about
this phenomenon.

AH: What are the official conclusions
reached by your committee?
RB: The official conclusion is that
the anomalous aerial phenomenon
known as unidentified flying objects is
real and is present within the controlled
airspace and outside the controlled
airspace. It is also present in the sea—
we have some reports from our navy in
that respect. It is present everywhere,
and therefore it is necessary to share
the information in order to have more
background and be able to study it
more scientifically, so that we can give
real information to the people and not
rely on what is shown on TV and in
sensationalist media.
Although General Bermúdez
discussed the main aspects of the
El Bosque case in the interview,
it is important to add a little more
information about CEFAA’s official
conclusions and analysis of this
important case. The footage was
analyzed thoroughly by CEFAA’s
External Committee of Advisors,
which established that the object
was not a meteoroid, a comet,
reentry of space junk, a bird, or an
airplane. Furthermore, the scientists’
report noted that the UFO undertook
“a risky maneuver in front of the
Halcones from west to east” and did
“a flight maneuver at low altitude
and high speed.” The report also
established that “the object shows
light and shadow effects of metallic
like reflections and shows ellipsoidal
shape,” and “the land observers do
not detect the object in spite that it
passes over their heads, thereby it is
not accompanied by a sound wave.”
Finally, the report indicated, “the
object moves east with 25 degrees
inclination . . . the same angle
spacecraft enter the atmosphere.”

July 16, 1952
This is one of the most famous photos taken during the American
flying saucer wave of 1952. It was taken by Shell Alpert, a U.S. Coast
Guard (USCG) seaman stationed at the USCG weather office in Salem,
Massachusetts, on July 16. The USCG briefly investigated the case
and issued a press release. Afterwards, the original negative was sent
to Project Blue Book for analysis. The official air force report stated,
“The photo was taken with a 4/5 Busch Pressman Camera . . . loaded
with 4/5 super XX cut film. The photographer observed several lights
which seemed to be wavering. He observed the lights for 5 or 6 seconds
and grabbed the camera which had been on a nearby table.”
Taipei, Taiwan
August 1, 1973
This photo of two luminous disc-shaped objects in
the night sky was taken by high school student Chi
Zhong Jie from the third floor of his house in Taipei,
Taiwan, shortly before midnight on August 1, 1973. The
circumstances were explained by Chinese-American
ufologist and author Paul Dong in his 1984 book,
The Four Major Mysteries of Mainland China; Dong
corresponded with Chi Zhong and actually received
the photo from the student. According to Dong’s book,
Chi Zhong was looking at the sky when “suddenly he
noticed two huge, double-shaped flying objects in the
sky moving from the west to the north.” As the objects
stopped for a moment, Chi Zhong rushed downstairs to
get his camera and, “about twenty seconds later, these
objects shot back to the west like two shooting meteors
and disappeared. Chi said the objects were silent . . .
[and] looked silver-white, like streetlights.” The case,
however, was not published until 1977, the same year
when discussions about UFOs were finally allowed to
be aired publicly in the People’s Republic of China.
Project Blue Book’s final conclusion was that the Salem photograph was
“a hoax,” although not an intentional one. According to Project Blue Book,
the formation of the four luminous objects in the photo was merely the
reflection of the ceiling lights on the window through which the photo
was taken. The explanation was accepted by Dr. J. Allen Hynek, who
was Project Blue Book’s scientific consultant, as well as other serious
ufologists. While the explanation seems to reasonably explain the photo
itself, it doesn’t explain Shell Alpert’s testimony of his visual observation
of the objects or the observations of a second witness at the weather
station cited in the July 17, 1952 USCG report. The report added, “No
factual information could be learned concerning the size, shape, altitude,
speed, sound or direction of motion, of the objects.” Interestingly, this
first report also noted that “any information concerning the objects was
‘SECRET’ and should not be discussed with anyone without permission.”

June 30, 1973
This intriguing image has an unusual scientific pedigree
based on the fact that it was taken by scientists from
France’s National Center for Scientific Research
(French acronym, CNRS) on June 30, 1973, while
flying onboard a Concorde jet at Mach 2 at 17,000
meters over Chad, Africa. The Concorde was piloted
by André Turcat, and Jean Begot was the CNRS
technician in charge of photographing a solar eclipse.
The crew noticed “a luminous spot in the sky.” The
image was later enlarged one hundred times and
released to the French media in February 1974,
which is the version of the photo depicted here.
Scientists who analyzed the picture acknowledged
the object was not caused by a defect in the film,
a reflection on the Concorde (all aircraft lights were
turned off to study the eclipse), or a weather balloon.
They estimated the object had a diameter of at least
200 meters. The February 2, 1974 headline in the
newspaper, France Soir, read, “Nobody can explain
‘the thing’ seen by the Concorde.” The newspaper,
Le Parisien, proclaimed, “A 200 m in diameter ‘saucer’
photographed by the Concorde?” Astrophysicist Serge
Koutchmy later explained the UFO as “probably a
cloud in the stratosphere created by the passage or
disintegration of a daytime meteor belonging to the
Beta-Taurides group.” CNRS physicist Pierre Guérin, a
scientist who was well known for his pro-UFO views,
accepted Koutchmy’s explanation, but nevertheless,
the Concorde UFO photo is still an interesting case.
Riga, Latvia
August 4, 1968
This interesting picture of a
triangular-shaped UFO is just one
frame of a Soviet military motion
picture filmed by cameraman
Siegurds Dudins at an air force base
in Riga, the capital of the Republic
of Latvia, which was then still part
of the USSR. Dudins was filming
at the base when one of the pilots
shouted that there was a strange
object hovering over the airfield.
A jet was quickly scrambled but
the object disappeared behind a
cloud. The case was forgotten until
the UFO subject exploded publicly
in the waning days of the USSR.
One frame of the Riga footage was
published in 1989 in the magazine,
Sputnik, in an important article
by biophysicist Mark Milchiker
titled, “Time to Study the Facts.”
The full version of the film was finally
declassified in 1994 and shown during
a segment of ABC-TV’s Primetime
Live titled, “KGB UFO Files.” Dudins
was interviewed briefly, although Yuli
Platov, a well-known scientist and
UFO skeptic, claimed on camera
that “this one is a research balloon,
a triangle-shaped French balloon, no
doubt.” Yet, Platov’s explanation is
not as airtight as it sounds. For one,
Milchiker wrote in his Sputnik article
that Dudins “saw 12 small objects
flying from and to a larger object,”
which certainly doesn’t fit with the
behavior of a high-altitude weather
balloon; you can actually see three
of these small objects as black dots
in the photo. Secondly, Primetime
Live established that the type of
French triangular balloon referenced
by Platov was in production in
1968, but records showed the only
two that flew in the Baltic region
were not launched until a month
after the date of the Riga film.

The U.S. Capitol Building, Washington DC
1965
This famous photo of what looks like a UFO formation
flying right above the U.S. Capitol Building has been
reproduced everywhere on the Internet (as well as
in many books, articles, and TV shows) as alleged
visual proof of the July 1952 UFO incidents over the
nation’s capital. Nonetheless, the truth is that the photo
was probably taken many years later and is a classic
example of lens flares—a reflection of a light source on
the camera’s lens. For starters, no one seems to know
who took the photo and under what circumstances.
The photo never appeared in the vast contemporary
press coverage of the Washington, DC UFO incidents;
instead, it seems to have first appeared in the UFO
literature sometime in the late 1960s to early 1970s.
The most thorough photo analysis of this image was
undertaken by Colonel Colman von Keviczky, who noted
that a study of the full image (often only the so-called
formation over the dome is reproduced), reveals that
there are awnings on the bottom of the building. Von
Keviczky contacted the U.S. Capitol Architect’s Office
to attempt to date the photo. The response he received
was that outdoor repairs that would have included
awnings took place in 1965, not 1952. More importantly,
von Keviczky then performed a detailed geometric
analysis that showed that the “UFO formation” was
nothing more than a lens flare artifact created by
the row of lights on the bottom, and in reality, the
photographer likely never saw any UFOs. A proper
analysis of this photo, however, in no way invalidates
the July 19-20, 1952 Washington, DC sightings, which
were documented primarily by the radar detection
of “unknown targets” over the capital’s restricted
airspace, leading to the scrambling of air force jets.
Nagasaki Bay, Japan
1945
This extremely rare photo showing a possible UFO over
Nagasaki Bay was taken sometime in late 1945. Nagasaki
was the second Japanese city destroyed by an atomic
bomb on August 9, 1945, and it was subsequently
occupied by U.S. military forces. Ed Rogers was in a
U.S. Marine Corps regiment stationed in the destroyed
city, and his job included photographing the damage
and reconstruction efforts. Decades later, Japanese-
American journalist Marie Ueda discovered the photo
while pouring through hundreds of pictures archived at
the Nagasaki Atomic Memorial Museum, and the case
was published in 2001 in the Japanese magazine, Flash.
No details are known about the circumstances of the
photo itself except a general dating to late 1945. Rogers
was definitely not interested in UFOs, which gives more
credibility to the case. “I don’t believe in UFOs and
I am not interested in any UFO phenomena, either,”
said Rogers in the Flash article. Ueda was interested in
UFOs, however, and she contacted Lieutenant Colonel
Wendelle Stevens, who was quoted in the article saying,
“If there is no scratch on its negative this is a genuine
UFO! This is an important historical discovery.” The
possible UFO-nuclear weapon link was first mentioned
in an official report by the RAND Corporation as part of
Project Sign, the first official air force UFO investigation.
The report’s author, Dr. James E. Lipp, wrote, “The first
flying objects were sighted in the Spring of 1947, after

Russia’s Roswell Incident

Russia’s Roswell Incident, continued...
There are many parallels between the former Soviet
Union and the United States when it comes to UFO
sightings and experiences, as the authors of Russia’s
Roswell Incident: And Other Amazing UFO Cases from the
Former Soviet Union make abundantly clear in their book.
Veteran writer Paul Stonehill, who was born in the USSR
and emigrated to the U.S. in 1973, along with coauthor Philip
Mantle, who has had a long career that includes serving as
the director of investigations for the British UFO Research
Association, join forces to provide an excellent overview
of UFOs in the USSR during a time when the subject was
taboo, even for top Soviet scientists and cosmonauts. While
official disclosure from that period is scant at best, the new
spirit of Glasnost that began with Mikhail Gorbachev in
the mid-1980s has made possible many interesting new
revelations and encouraged witnesses to tell the stories they
had long kept to themselves for fear of being persecuted for
their beliefs.
So what was Russia’s Roswell incident? The authors
actually write about two Roswell-style incidents, the
first being the 1986 crash landing of a spherical UFO in
the town of Dalnegorsk in southeastern Russia. In early
2012, some debris from the crash was put on display
at the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas
that included glassy spheres and bits of metal in vials
recovered from a red orb that streaked over the Russian
mining town of Dalnegorsk and crashed into Mount
Izvestkovayaon.
The exhibit’s inscription noted:
Three Soviet academic centers and eleven
research institutes analyzed the objects from
this UFO crash. The distance between atoms
is different from ordinary iron. Radar cannot
be reflected from the material. Elements in the
material may disappear and new ones appear
after heating. One piece disappeared completely
in front of four witnesses. The core of the
material is composed of a substance with antigravitational
properties.
That does indeed sound like some anomalous metal,
reminiscent of the strange metal alleged to have been
recovered from the site of the original New Mexico
Roswell incident in 1947. Stonehill and Mantle provide
a wealth of further details, including reports from the
Russian news agency, Pravda, and the findings of Soviet
scientists who came to Dalnegorsk to further study the
debris and damage left behind.
The better-known Tunguska explosion of June 1908 is
deemed by the authors to be Russia’s “other” Roswell
incident. Some unknown force or object burst in the air
over Siberia, flattening more than a thousand square miles
of forest but leaving no crater and no evidence of what
caused the event. Over a hundred years later, the cause
is still unknown, though some speculate it may have been
a UFO that exploded due to a malfunction of its onboard
power plant.
While numerous scientific expeditions, some secret and
some publicly acknowledged, have traveled to the region,
no one has ever discovered the remains of a meteorite
or a crashed alien spacecraft there. Meanwhile, the
indigenous natives, the Evenks, believe that the explosion
was caused by a deity named Agdi that descended from
the heavens down into the forest. They say that Agdi
spoke to their people and was actually seen by many of
them. For many years, the Evenk shamans kept the area
sealed off from the rest of the world, fearful of angering
the gods who had caused the explosion.
Surprisingly, given that the former Soviet Union was
officially an atheist state, Stonehill and Mantle are able to
reveal a surprising spiritual component in the statements
of various cosmonauts. A cosmonaut named Aleksei
Leonov, for example, told an audience of reporters at a

press conference in 2005 that in years past he had
headed a “commission” to study UFOs. Leonov stated
that he did not believe UFOs were alien spacecraft and
took the position that no other intelligent life existed in
our solar system. But Leonov did believe that Earth had
been visited in ancient times by a superior race that
left behind many artifacts. He added that all religions
express a common theme of someone who arrived,
created students and disciples, and then ascended
back into the sky with thunder and lightning.
Stonehill and Mantle’s book also recounts another
oddly spiritual incident that took place in 1984 in which
six cosmonauts onboard the Soviet orbital station
Salyut 7 suddenly saw a huge orange cloud of gas that
engulfed the craft and even penetrated into the ship’s
hull. The cosmonauts were temporarily blinded and lost
contact with mission control. When their sight returned
moments later, they were amazed to see seven gigantic
humanoid forms hovering out in space. Each of the
beings possessed bright halos over their heads and
two large wings, resembling the angels of religious
literature. The angels then “smiled” at the cosmonauts,
bringing intense feelings of joy and rapture to the
inner beings of the nonreligious space travelers. The
apparitions and the orange cloud vanished after ten
minutes, which caused the cosmonauts to feel an
overwhelming sense of loss.
When they reported what had happened, the incident
was immediately classified as top secret, and a special
team of doctors was assembled to study, from the
ground, the cosmonauts’ well-being, including a long
and detailed series of tests to determine their physical
and mental health. It was confirmed that the crew were
well and of sound mind. Fearing embarrassment and
ridicule, the Soviet Union swept the incident under the
rug, and the Politburo took elaborate steps to make
sure the report stayed secret for all time. It was not
revealed until 1998, when a Russian magazine, NLO,
carried an account of the incident.
As is the case in the U.S., Soviet scientists and UFO
researchers have many questions but few answers
to the UFO phenomenon. Stonehill and Mantle have
done a mammoth job of collecting many hundreds
of UFO reports from the newspapers, magazines,
and television programs of the Soviet Union, and the
sheer mass of data they have assembled is certainly
admirable. The book is flawed, however, by numerous
typographical errors, sometimes three or four to a
page, which could have been remedied by some
careful proofreading. Still, Russia’s Roswell Incident will
engage the reader with the rare glimpse it provides into
the UFO phenomenon as experienced by the Russian
political and military establishments, as well as some
of its average citizens, who all ultimately seem to be as
baffled as we are at this point.

Chasing UFOs: Too Much Reality Show, Too Little Science

The Chasing UFOs team.
National Geographic is one of the oldest and most
prestigious scientific and media institutions in this country,
so expectations were high for its new, eight-episode, big
time production series, Chasing UFOs. The expectations
became even higher when word spread throughout the
UFO community that one of the co-hosts was James Fox,
who previously produced two of the best documentaries
in the UFO field, Out of the Blue and I Know What I Saw.
Unfortunately, the expectations came up rather short. The
show is certainly well produced and fairly entertaining, but
its “reality show” format is flawed, wasting too much time
on irrelevant adventures of the three hosts—James Fox
as the pro-UFO voice, physical scientist Ben McGee as
the friendly skeptic, and Erin Ryder in the middle—and too
little time on real scientific analysis of key UFO incidents.
Each show follows the same structure: The three UFO
chasers go to a particular location where they review some
recent cases, interview witnesses and local experts, and
then engage in a couple of nighttime sky watches, where
they show off their expensive cameras and other scientific
tools. The show usually spends some focusing on Ben
collecting physical evidence, whether samples of mutilated
cows in Colorado’s San Luis Valley or metallic pieces
found at the Roswell crash site. Unfortunately, however,
the discussion of the scientific evidence is literally left for
the last three minutes of the program, where Ben races
through the data just before the credits. While science may
be boring to many people, National Geographic has plenty
of experience making it exciting in their more traditional
documentaries, an effort which was certainly not recreated
in Chasing UFOs.
The series’ main problem is its emphasis on the reality
show format. Each program tries to cover too much terrain
in the particular state which is the focus of that episode.
Time is precious, and often key aspects of important cases
like the 1947 Roswell crash or the 1975 abduction of Travis
Walton are left uncovered while the show wastes time on

nonsense common to a reality show. Instead
of providing its viewers with key scientific facts
or analysis, the show focuses on things such
as the team’s truck being stuck in the mud in
Arizona, Ryder almost falling from a tree while
collecting samples at the site of the Walton
abduction, or close encounters with alligators
in the Florida Everglades. These vignettes are
fine for a nature program, but frankly are of
little interest or importance in elucidating the
mystery of UFOs; even more so if the price is
that key elements of a particular incident are
not covered at all.
One particularly poor example of coverage
is when the team covers the Travis Walton
abduction case in Arizona. What distinguishes
this incident from all other known alien
abductions is that the UFO was seen by all
of Walton’s coworkers, he was missing for five full days
resulting in a massive search for a missing person, and
the case was officially investigated by the police and all
the witnesses were polygraphed. But viewers of Chasing
UFOs wouldn’t know any of these things by watching
the program. While there was some value to the team’s
decision to collect tree ring samples from the abduction
site to see if there was any abnormal growth, the show
glossed over the results in a rush at the end of the
program.
Similarly, in the Roswell episode, the team interviewed
geologist Frank Kimbler, who found some metal fragments
at the crash site which looked artificial and whose gravity
signature seem to indicate they were not from Earth.
This is potentially real scientific evidence of the kind that
skeptics are always demanding, but Chasing UFOs didn’t
even mention that; nor did they do their own analysis of
the Kimbler samples to try to confirm or reject his findings.
Instead they dug for their own samples, finding one that
turned out to be nothing, and another which was a military
button from the late 1940s that got everybody overly
excited in the show.
Although, like many in the ufological community, I was
disappointed with Chasing UFOs, it’s fair to mention a
couple of positive aspects. The series is certainly well
produced and shows at least the potential of what a true
scientific investigation of UFOs could or should be. The
main positive ingredient is the mere fact that a mainstream
media organization like National Geographic is devoting
so much time to the subject, keeping an open mind, and
not just debunking or ridiculing it as other mainstream
programs have done in the past. This is a welcome
trend indeed, and the series is probably reaching a large
audience that normally wouldn’t see this kind of program.
Let’s hope that this trend continues in popular media
and that next time the networks will concentrate more on
science and less on the reality show format.
