STRENGTH TRAINING FOR OLDER ADULTS
with Wayne Westcott, PhD
In our sedentary society, adults and seniors lose about six pounds of muscle tissue
every decade. This results in reduced resting metabolism and leads to an
average 16-pound per decade increase in fat. The poorer body composition
opens the door to a variety of degenerative disorders including heart disease,
diabetes, many types of cancer, low back pain, osteoporosis and arthritis.
Fortunately, research shows that relatively brief but regular strength training
sessions can be highly effective for replacing muscle, recharging metabolism,
reducing fat and lowering the risk of many degenerative disorders. This presentation
addresses the important health and fitness benefits of strength exercise
for seniors, as well as basic research-based guidelines for strength training
in a safe, productive and time-efficient manner at advanced age. LECTURE.
HEART RATE MONITOR TRAINING
with Jay Blahnik
For years, world-class athletes have used heart rate monitors to evaluate and
improve performance. However, a closer look at heart rate monitor research
beneficial performance benefits. This workshop will debunk the myths and misconceptions
associated with heart rate monitors, provide an up-to-date, simplified
approach to using a heart rate monitor for maximum benefits, and revolutionize
designed strength training programs. Wayne presents carefully researched
recommendations for youth strength training protocols that provide both physiological
SrFIT
AAHF’s SrFit
program provides
advanced training for
experienced, certified
personal trainers who
wish to work success
fully with the older adult.
This program is approved for 15 contact hours of
CEU credit by SCW; 19 hours of CEU credit by ACE;
20 hours of CEU credit by Cooper, ISSA, NASM,
NESTA, NSCA, SFA and WITS; and 24 hours of
CEU credit by BOC (NATA).
SrFit shows you the best ways to develop (or redevelop)
physical fitness in older adults. We understand
how to apply physical training in the best ways to
match the physiology of aging and its often subsequent
chronic diseases, and will teach you to do the
same. There are many programs that currently train
people to be senior fitness exercise leaders, but
there are fewer training programs that build on the
expertise of the personal trainer and that require a
certification in personal training as a prerequisite.
It seems reasonable to expect that anyone designing
personalized fitness programs for seniors should be
a certified personal trainer with extra training for the
senior population. This will become even more
important as the industry sets standards for personal
training, and as the medical community and insurance
companies begin to recognize personal trainers
as a viable option for referring patients who need
help with lifestyle change. This in depth course
includes a 300 page manual, 60 page study guide,
2 1/2 hour DVD set featuring Wayne Westcott, a
one hour audio CD featuring Tammy Petersen with
her husband Mark, a geriatrician. Instructions for
completing the online examination and obtaining
CEU credit are also included.
