A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello Members! Now that the cold and snowy days
of winter are behind us, I know that we are all anxious
and excited to get outside and enjoy the pool,
tennis, grilling, and just having fun at our Minnechaug
Swim and Tennis Club.
We have a dedicated and energetic Board serving
MS&T Club. I’ve referenced our Board members at
the end of this note. We meet monthly, and have
been very active as you’ll see throughout this
Newsletter. We have been preparing for the summer
season including our adult and youth tennis
programs; youth swim programs, and our social activities.
I’m delighted to start my first of two years
as your Club President, after serving the past two
years as Club Vice President. Please contact me
directly, or any Board member if you have questions
or recommendations. Our number one goal is
that MS&T continues to be a safe and fun environment.
Below are some highlights as we get ready for our
official opening day on Saturday May 25 th . We
hope the weather will allow us to open our Tennis
Facilities by the end of April or early May. We will
notify you when the courts are open via an email.

I am pleased to announce that Mike Crean will
be returning as Club Director. Mike is a huge
part of what makes MS&T Club special, and I
am thrilled that he is again part of the team.
I’m also delighted that Sue Husta is returning as
our Swim Team Coach providing continuity in
training our children to develop and excel in
swimming while having fun as a team. Lastly,
please join me in welcoming our new Tennis
Pro, Catherine Clark. We thank Shaun Keane,
our previous Tennis Pro for his years of service
as he notified us in December that he would
pursue other interests this summer. After an
extensive search and selection process, we are
pleased to have Catherine join the team. She
has several years of Tennis instruction experience
and currently plays on the Division 1 Tennis
Team at Manhattan College.
Throughout the Fall and Winter, we did sustain
some tree damage
to our property.
The good
news is that
many of you,
along with Board
members, have
already done
some great work
clearing downed
branches. Sullivan
Tree will
Quick note of
thanks to our
friends at Sullivan
Tree who have
been very
generously
donating a good
portion of their
time helping us
soon be clearing the hanging branches to ensure
the grounds are safe
For those of you who didn't get to join us at our
annual meeting in November, we reviewed our
financials. We continue to develop and update
our long term Strategic Capital Plan. MS&T
Club has developed some infrastructure challenges
over the last few years that we continue
to address. In order to protect the safety of our
members and to keep the club running, not just
this year but for decades to come, we have established
a documented Strategic Plan with expected
repair needs and costs budgeted over
the next several years. This 20 year Strategic
Plan is based on full membership capacity
(thank you all for being members) along with
fiscal responsibility with regard to our Club expenses.
This focus has allowed us to avoid raising
dues this year. We continue to benchmark
our Club against the three other Swim & Tennis
Clubs in town. Our dues fall in the middle
range compared to the other three which range
from $950 to $1,100 including taxes.
1

I’m pleased to announce that through a special
program with the American Red Cross, we have
just purchased an AED Plus from Zoll (Automated
External Defibrillator) for the Club. We felt this
purchase was in the best safety interest for our
members and guests. All of our Life Guards are
American Red Cross certified which provided them
with the AED training. We will be providing an
AED and CPR American Red Cross refresher training
session to all of our Tennis and Swim staff. The
MS&T Club is certified and under contract with the
American Red Cross for our youth swim lesson
plans. The AED will be housed in a wall mounted
cabinet in the Guard House. There will be signs
throughout the club that let people know that we
have one and where it may be found.
This year MS&T Club will host our Swim League
Championship Meet on
Saturday Aug 3 rd . Given
our current Swim League
structure, we host Championships
every six years.
This will be a major event
requiring lots of planning,
volunteers, & support.
The MS&T Club
Championship Committee
will be providing you with
more details in the weeks
ahead.
Lastly, I’d like to share with you some closing reminders:

We are a Cooperative Club which means we count
on all of your help to support the Club by providing
a minimum of eight hours of Club work. There
are numerous opportunities for you to get your
work hours. A list of Club needs for work jobs and
volunteering will be posted and updated throughout
the season. Our Club Rules ask that all families
contribute four hours to social work and four hours
to infrastructure / facility support. It isn't too early
to think about how you can contribute! For those
of you that have children participating on the Swim
Team, there are mandatory volunteer needs in order
for us to run a successful productive Swim
Meet. Information will be provided to you in the
coming weeks as well. Thank you all for giving
your time and energy in support of our Club.

Every evening from 7:45pm – 11:30pm, we have a
member assigned to Pool Sit. This is done on a
yearly rotating basis. The specifics on this require-
2
ment are outlined in our Club Rules on the Website
and will be available to you in our 2013 Membership
Booklet Memorial Day Weekend. As you’ll
see, some Rules, such as guest fees are waived for
the Pool Sitter during the pool sitting time. However,
other members are allowed to use the pool and
must be thoughtful and well behaved with respect
to the Pool Sitter should a Pool Sitting function be
in place. Loud music is not permitted and Life
Guards are not on duty at this time.
All Guests need to be signed in at the designated
sign-in area according to our Club Rules. The sign
-in sheet is at the pool entrance table and at the
tennis courts. A guest is a non-member who
makes use of the pool, pool area, picnic area, or
tennis facilities. Each member family is allowed a
maximum of 30 guests during the official season.
An individual guest may not use the facilities
more than two days a month regardless of the
member hosting that guest. Guest Fees are invoiced
to members at the end of the season.
I’ll close where I started. Safety is our #1 priority, followed
by fun. As noted in our Club Rules, children unable
to swim will not per permitted in the main pool at
any time unless taking swimming lessons or they are
accompanied by a parent or parent authorized guardian.
Lifejackets, arm pads, or other floatation devices
are not allowed in the pool. We do honor an exception
to those youth swimmers that have a physical disability
and rely on a floatation device to complement
their swimming skills. If children are not able to swim,
we do expect that there will always be a parent in the
pool with them at an arm’s reach. We will have a firm
policy on this which will include: a documented infraction
warning from the Life Guard on duty if the child is
not within an arm’s length of the parent. Should this
occur a second time during the season, the incident
will brought to the Board’s attention, and should this
regrettably occur for a third time, disciplinary action
will be taken which could result in the family not having
access to the pool. The Kiddie Pool is a great place
for the younger children to stay cool.
Thank you for being a member of Minnechaug Swim
and Tennis Club. See you on Memorial Day!
Regards,
Tennis Facilities
We have good news for
the Minnechaug's tennis
community!
The replacement of the
rusted tennis court fences
enclosing courts 3 & 4 is
scheduled for this Spring.
We have the Board to
thank for allocating capital
budget dollars for this
much needed project.
Some other good news is
that our two Court Maintainers
from last year -
Ryan Carr and Casey Smith
- will be returning. Every
morning, they will sweep
the courts, roll them and
add calcium, as needed.
Their work will ensure that
the courts are in
good playing condition for
our members. In late April,
Putnam Tennis will once
again recondition Minnechaug's
five clay courts
for the season. They will
scrape off last year's layer
of clay replacing it with
new, livelier Har-Tru clay.
They will roll the courts,
install the nets and lines,
spread calcium and spray
weed-killer. Barring wet
weather, we expect the
courts to be ready for play
by late April.
In addition to our contactor's
work, we will need
volunteers to hang the
windscreens and court
signage, install the net,
baskets and courtside
benches, etc. This is an
excellent post opportunity
for families to complete
half of their 2013 Work
Job. Please mark Saturday
May 4 on your calendars
for this work from 8
am to 12 noon. Finally, the
Tennis Facilities committee
is looking for a member to
replace one of its incumbents.
Benefits include
exemption from guest fees
and pool sitting. Please e-
mail tomfayed@cox.net if
you are interested or have
any questions.
We have had quite a winter
season!! It will be interesting
to see all of the
work that needs to be
done to get our pool ready
for a summer of fun!! We
have lots of great ideas
this year to make our pool
club even more enjoyable.
We will need your help to
make our poolside experience
the best ever!
Our Spring Cleanup Day
will be Sunday, April 28 th
(Rain date May 5 th ). A
second date of Saturday,
May 4 th is available if you
can’t make April 28 th . This
year our Grounds, Tennis
and Building Committee
Chairs are teaming up to
run Spring Cleanup – so
please look for one consolidated
email from
grounds@minnechaug.org
for all Spring Cleanup work
hour opportunities.
Here are a few areas and
jobs that we'll spend our
time on during these two
days:
Raking, blowing & cleaning
the grounds; cleaning
up the driveway and
parking lot; organizing
the picnic tables - clean
and paint; get the pool
deck ready with furniture;
paint & set up the Life
Guard Chairs, diving
boards, Swim Board;
painting the steps of the
Clubhouse, helping getting
the pool ready, and getting
Tennis courts cleaned as
well. Please bring your
gloves, rakes, leaf blowers
and your smiles. We'll
supply the paint and
brushes for those of you
that like to paint. We
look forward to hearing
from you. Thank you and
we'll see you at Clean-up
day.
And if you have any idea's
to contribute or items you
think can be contributed
to the club to help out or
spruce it up, please let us
know!!
your reference. You can
also find applications for
new members, the wait
list, and work job forms
there.
We are maintaining a
master list of member’s
emails addresses. If you
did not receive an email
from the club, we probably
need an Updated
email from you. Please
send your email information
to membership@minnechaug.org.
Please note that any
emails you receive from
they can note that you
have received the Yearbook.
We have one Yearbook
available for each
family. All of the Club Bylaws
and Rules are in the
Yearbook, as well as the
carefully. The fine for a
there are late fees as
Annual Meeting
Nov 2013
Dear Members,
We are looking forward to another great
summer at Minnechaug this year! We
had a positive response to all of the social
events last year. The highlights were
the kick off for Memorial Day with record
turnout due to nice weather. We will
continue to have the favorites School's
Out party in June and Family Splash in
July. Movie Nights were a hit last August
as well as the Avengers party.
We are looking forward to another fun
season with some new events so stay
tuned! We are always looking for great
volunteers to make these events a success.
Party Requests
The process for requesting a private party at the Club is
changing slightly this year. We have created an online
party request form. Here is a link to the form: http://
bit.ly/MinnPartyRequest A link will also be placed under
the Forms section of the website. The completed online
party requests will automatically be sent to our new Party
Coordinator, Karin Carlino. Karin will be responsible for
coordinating the request with Mike Crean, the Club Director.
They will take into consideration Club resources,
needs, other commitments and ensure that there are no
social events, swim meet, board meetings or other party
is planned for that time period. Once a request is granted,
the Party Coordinator will review the party rules and
collect the fee for the party from the member hosting the
event. Party Rules may be found under Club Rules and
Regulations in the Yearbook.
Swim Team
The Minnechaug Makos Swim Team
provides a positive fun experience
for all levels of swimmers. We encourage
all children through age 17
to participate. No prior experience is
necessary! The only requirement is
that a child be able to swim the
length of the pool (25 yards) at least
3 times with a break. Contact Coach
Sue if you have questions concerning
this requirement.
What team should my child be on?
Green Team: Swimmers (ages 5 –7)
who are able to swim one length of
the pool and who show a
strong interest in the swim team
should join the Green Swim Team.
The Green Swim Team will start on
June 24th and run until the last week
of July or Aug 3th depending on the
swimmer’s ability and development
throughout the summer. All Green
Swim Team members may swim in at
least the two home swim meets
(other meets if interested) and depending
on the number of swimmers
and ability on 7/30 (Tuesday) at Minnechaug
or 8/3 (Championships).
Yellow Team:
More experienced 5-7 year olds and
all swimmers 10 and under are on
the yellow team.
I am looking forward to another great
summer at Minnechaug. As of this point,
we do not have our Assistant Coaches
firmed up. You can be sure that they will
have strong technical knowledge and
will be able to work well with children. I
am looking forward to another great season!
Our team, unlike all the other teams in
our league, does not have an association
with a winter team that can funnel
swimmers to Minnechaug. We have to
rely on word of mouth. So, please, if you
have enjoyed the swimming experience
at Minnechaug, be sure to talk it up with
your friends. Lastly, try to get into a
spring stroke clinic so you are ready for
the season to start!!! This summer we
will continue with dry land exercises with
a focus on core strengthening. This
summer we are also going to continue to
focus on improving individual stroke mechanics
and having fun. If you can commit
to at least 5 out of 7 weeks, 3-4
(preferably 4) days a week and swim at
least one lap of the pool three times or
one lap for the Green Team, come on
down to the pool. We look forward to the
start of the swim season at Minnechaug!!!
Red Cross Certified Swim Lessons
One of Minnechaug’s great traditions
is making free swim lessons available
to members.
The Red Cross Certified Lessons are
all taught by Water Safety Instructor
(WSI) Minnechaug lifeguards. Swim
lesson sessions this summer will be
as follows:
Session 1:
Monday, Jun 24 – Friday, Jul 5 (no
lessons on July 4 th )
Session 2:
Monday, Jul 8 – Friday, Jul 19
Session 3:
Monday, Jul 22 – Friday, Aug 2
Session 4:
Monday, Aug 5 – Friday, Aug 16
To provide each child with the opportunity
to participate in swim lessons,
we will guarantee each child two swim
lesson sessions during the summer.
For those members who desire additional
lessons, we will try to accommodate
such requests to the best of
our ability. Due to the popularity of
the lessons, we may not be able to
honor all requests for additional lessons,
or for a particular session. To
make the most of the available time
slots, we ask that the afternoon sessions
be limited to children who are
not able to attend one of the morning
sessions. Private lessons are also
available, for an additional fee.
Since online registration is new to the
Club, we would like to start with the
first session only right now. After all
of the registrations for the first session
are received, it will be determined
how many children are taking
lessons and how many groups of each
level will be needed. You will be notified
via email, as well as on the bulletin
board at the Club, as to when each
group will meet.
Swim lesson registration will be done
online this year. Here is a link to the
registration form: http://bit.ly/
swimregsession1 The registration
Lessons will be 25 minutes in
length and run from 9:00 –
10:25 am. There will also be
limited signups for the afternoon
sessions which run
from 5:30 – 6:25 pm. Sessions
are two weeks in
length.
Swim Lesson Registration—Updated Information
deadline for the first session is Friday,
June 14 th .
Parents and guardians/babysitters of
those swimmers under the age of 12
are required to stay in the pool area
during swim lessons.
Nick Porter is the lifeguard in charge
of our lesson program. If you have
any questions about which level is
appropriate for your child, please do
not hesitate to ask him.
If you have any problems or questions
while registering, please let us know
CLUB DIRECTOR –
MIKE CREAN
Get geared up for another action-packed
summer at Minnechaug
where our goal will
continue to be “maximum
fun, maximum safety!” This
summer we’ll improve upon
last year’s popular “Camp
Minnechaug” night with an
entire week filled with camp
activities to get you geared
up for the event. We’ll also
be running a variety of
themed weeks for the kids
such as “Junior Lifeguard
Week” and “
”
In addition to our youth basketball
league we will also be
offering a morning adult basketball
league this summer.
Parent Volunteer Requirements:
As you all know, the swim meets are run by parent volunteers. To adequately staff the meets, parents
of all swimmers (except the Green Team) will be required to sign up and work at least 3 meets during
the season. In addition, all hands will have to be on deck to help with championships. Failure to fulfill
this commitment will result in a $50 fine for each meet short of the 3 meet requirements. This is a commitment
that parents must accept in as part of the registration process. Work assignments consist of
timers, runners, scorers, ribbon writers, a starter and officiating.
Before each meet, a volunteer sign-up sheet will be emailed to all parents. If you sign up for a swim meet and are
unable to fulfill that obligation, please make arrangements to have someone fill that position. Thank you in advance
for your commitment and assistance with the swim team. This is a truly rewarding experience for parents
and kids alike! We look forward to seeing you at the meets.
Any questions about swim team may be directed to Christine Szalkiewicz at cazock@gmail.com. Christine has graciously
volunteered to be our swim team manager.
Put this line at the bottom of the swim team section where you can contact Christine if you have swim team questions.
