Annual Report & Accounts 2009-2010 15 The Trust Board members Chairman: Sir David Varney David joined the Trust as Chairman in January 2010. He joined Shell in 1968 after graduating from the University of Surrey with a degree in chemistry. He has worked in Australia, Holland and Sweden. In 1996, he left Shell and became Chief Executive of BG Group (previously British Gas). In 2001, he was appointed Executive Chairman of MM02. He chaired Business in the Community, was Chairman of HM Revenue and Customs between 2004 and 2006 and President of the Chartered Management Institute. Most recently, he was the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Public Service Transformation until 2009. Chief Executive: John Goulston John Goulston joined the Trust as Interim Chief Executive in October 2007. He was appointed substantively as Chief Executive in March 2008. John worked at Barts and The London NHS Trust from 2002 to 2007. John graduated in economics at Hull University before joining the Southeast Thames Regional Health Authority’s finance training scheme. Once qualified as an accountant he joined accountancy firm Coopers and Lybrand, where he spent three years in public sector audit and another three in health consultancy. He returned to the NHS in 1992, working as Finance Director of the former Crawley and Horsham Trust for three years. He took the same post at the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust for seven years before moving onto Barts and The London. As Interim Chief Executive at the Trust, and previously as Deputy Chief Executive, John led the £1bn redevelopment programme for Barts and the Royal London Hospitals, which includes a shared, long-term service vision and plan with the North East London primary care trusts. Medical Director: Ian Abbs Ian qualified in Medicine from London University in 1984. He undertook postgraduate research training as a nephrologist at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospitals, where he was later appointed as a consultant nephrologist in 1994. His clinical and research interests are in transplantation and immune renal disease, and Ian developed an increasing interest in the organisation and management of clinical services as a Clinical and Divisional Director. He was Director for Clinical Academic Group Development for King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) and most recently, as an Associate Medical Director at Guy’s and St Thomas, he worked on the integration of the community provider arm with the AHSC. He joined the Trust as Medical Director in April 2010. Director of Human Resources: Ruth McAll Ruth McAll joined the Trust in December 2008 as an Interim HR Director. Ruth has 15 years experience as an HR Director with a variety of NHS Trusts, including mental health, community and Foundation Trusts. Ruth’s objectives at BHR are to develop a structure and function for HR that is able to help staff and managers deliver good practices in people management. Ruth was a member of the national pensions review, lead in HR networks and NHS conference. The Trust Board members
16 Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust Director of Delivery: Neill Moloney Neill Moloney joined BHRUT in May 2008 from Barts and the London NHS Trust where he was Head of Information and Performance. Responsibilities included leading the contracting process with commissioners for the Trust. Prior to this he was a General Manager for over four years at Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust in Chelmsford and Birmingham Heartlands and Solihull NHS Trust, managing a range of clinical and non-clinical services. As a Commissioning Manager for Birmingham Health Authority, Neill led on development of the winter and emergency plans and was responsible for commissioning specialised services. With a background in business planning, information provision and operational management Neill’s priorities are to ensure plans and enabling strategies are in place to support the delivery of the Trust’s clinical services. Director of Nursing: Deborah Wheeler Deborah Wheeler joined the Trust as Director of Nursing in January 2010 from the Whittington NHS Trust where she held the post of Director of Nursing and Clinical Development. Deborah trained as a nurse at St Bartholomew's Hospital, and spent her clinical career in orthopaedic nursing. She subsequently held a variety of management posts at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. Deborah has lived in the Barkingside area for the last 25 years. Her children were born in Barking Hospital and King George Hospital. Director of Finance: David Wragg David Wragg joined the Trust in April 2009 after nine years as Finance Director at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Trust in Woolwich, SE London, where he also looked after estates and facilities management. David had a leading role in the project to merge the Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Trust with Bromley Hospitals NHS Trust and Queen Mary’s Hospital NHS Trust to form South London Healthcare NHS Trust. He has also contributed financial leadership to the Picture of Health project, which has made important and far reaching recommendations for the reorganisation of acute hospital services in outer SE London. Before joining Queen Elizabeth, David spent 15 years working in management consultancy and external audit for NHS organisations. David’s main priorities are helping to address the service and financial challenges faced by BHRUT. David is a keen football fan and makes no apologies for being an Arsenal season ticket holder. Director of Strategy and Planning: Robert Royce Robert Royce joined the Trust in January 2010. Previously, Robert was Director of Operations, Planning, Estates and Facilities in a large acute trust in Wales. He has also been Interim Director of Operations, Division of Emergency Care and Specialist Medicine at South London Healthcare NHS Trust. Robert’s key priorities are to drive forward the implementation of the Trust’s clinical strategy and to ensure the Trust has a robust process by which it’s objectives are monitored and delivered The Trust Board members
