The Hot
Seat
Jordi Clos
The president of the Museu Egipci is still passionate
about an extraordinary civilisation. By Eugènia Sendra
MUSEU EGIPCI
Ancient Egypt and its art have
fascinated you for a long time.
I’m a great fan of culture and the
arts, but the Egyptian collection is
what’s closest to my heart. My
interest started when I was 12,
and at 19 I bought my fi rst piece.
The collection has allowed me to
work in Egypt, and discover an
intact tomb from 1100 BC.
Which of the museum’s 1,100
pieces would you save from a fire?
We have several objects that would
be hard to get hold of nowadays,
such as the stele of Cleopatra VII –
many of these were destroyed in
Alexandria, and if it had been
identifi ed sooner, it would probably
have ended up at the Louvre or the
British Museum. Or the fragments
of bas-reliefs from the tomb of Iny,
bought in London, Paris, New York
and Amsterdam.
They’re objects with a story.
Yes, there’s the scientifi c story and
the personal one, that of their
owners. I have objects that
belonged to Adolf Hitler’s
propaganda chief, and a necklace
that once belonged to Rudolf
Valentino.
You define the museum as ‘alive’.
There’s a lot going on; we’re still
making new acquisitions. We’ve
created a diploma and master’s
degree in Egyptology, and we run
workshops for children. We want to
pass on a sense of respect for
humanity’s cultural heritage.
In November the star of the show
will be Tutankhamon.
That’s right, we’re putting on an
exhibition to celebrate the 90th
anniversary of the discovery of his
tomb by Howard Carter.
1,100
objects make up the collection,
from the pre-dynastic period to
the time of Cleopatra.
ART
in BCN
They’re not in the Prado, the Louvre or the MoMA:
they’re masterpieces of world art and they’re right here
in Barcelona. Joana Hurtado and Ricard Mas have
picked ten works that no visitor to the city should miss.
Photos Iván Moreno
Who leaves Paris without paying a
visit on the Mona Lisa? And yet
plenty of people pass through
Barcelona without seeing the great
Pantocrator of Taüll. The city may
not have anything on the scale of the
Louvre, but its many museums and
foundations contain works that bear
comparison with the best in the
world, and attract visitors from all
over the world.
The MNAC has one of the finest
collections of Romanesque art
anywhere, centring on spectacular
mural paintings dating from the 11th
to the 13th centuries. The murals
were removed whole from churches
around Catalonia between 1919 and
1923, to save them from damage or
looting, and carefully reconstructed
in the museum. The MNAC’s
stunning Gothic and Modernista
galleries, representing two of the
region’s richest and most interesting
artistic periods, are no less
impressive. If the MNAC’s Gothic
galleries leaves you wanting more,
the Fundació Godia’s small but
remarkable medieval collection
comes highly recommended.
To bring the story up to date, the
Museu d’Art Contemporani de
Barcelona (MACBA) specialises in
Spanish and Catalan art created since
1945. There’s also Can Framis, a
brand new museum given over to the
Vila Casas Foundation’s collection of
contemporary art. In combination,
these provide a general overview of
Catalan art from its roots right up to
the present day.
For anyone who wants a fuller
appreciation of 20th-century art, four
of the greatest artists of the period –
Picasso, Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies
and Joan Brossa – have strong
connections to Barcelona, and each is
represented by significant collections
in the museums and foundations that
bear their names.
So as not to overwhelm you, we’ve
narrowed down this ample field to ten
of the best, focusing on painting and
sculpture on display in permanent
collections. Barcelona’s museums
concentrate on Catalan art, and this
selection reflects that tendency. These
are the most representative works of
artists who have left their mark on the
region’s culture.
The lark’s wing ringed in the blue of gold meets
the heart of the poppy asleep on the field
studded with diamonds, 1967 Oil on canvas. 195 x 130 cm
JOAN MIRÓ (1893 – 1983)
Many of the works on display at the Miró foundation belong on this list. So why this
one? Because few express so perfectly the artist’s desire to ‘achieve the maximum
intensity with the minimum means’. In his later period, Miró painted enormous
canvases, stripping down and simplifying his style, intensifying his use of colour, and
condensing his personal visual language. As always with Miró, the subject of the painting
is not represented literally: instead it is suggested by a constellation of symbols.
The landscape genre provided a framework for many of Miró’s works, but in this case
the format is vertical rather than horizontal, almost suggesting a bird’s-eye view.
Apse of St Clement de
Taüll, 1123
Fresco transferred to canvas
620 x 360 x 180 cm
MASTER OF TAÜLL
This outstanding Romanesque piece is
arguably the most emblematic artwork in
the city. The largest work in this selection, it
is also the oldest, although it radiates a raw
modernity. The raw power of these colours
and geometric forms has influenced 20thcentury
artists from Picasso to Picabia.
While contemporary viewers may struggle
to identify biblical scenes, the image retains
its aura of power.
The jagged crack that crosses the main
image like a lightning bolt, as if illustrating
the inscription Ego sum Lux Mundi (I am the
Light of the World), also suggests a root, and
the physical uprooting of the mural itself,
which was transported from the remote
Valley of Boí in the Catalan Pyrenees.
MNAC
Acquired between 1919-1923.
The Wait (Margot), 1901
Oil on cardboard. 69.5 x 57 cm
PABLO RUIZ PICASSO (1881 – 1973)
For some a master, for others a monster,
Picasso’s influence dominates the 20th
century. His early years were characterised
by his voracious appetite for new styles,
which he assimilated and mastered with
dizzying speed, before surging forward again.
But who was Margot? Who is she waiting
for, leaning on her elbows, her glittering eyes
half-closed. Also known as The Morphine
Addict or Pierreuse (slang for prostitute),
this is a vivid image of Picasso’s first contact
with the bohemian nightlife of Paris. The
brushstrokes modelling the face are curt
and energetic; in the background they are
looser, conjuring the kaleidoscope of the night.
Mixing the influences of the pointillists,
Toulouse Lautrec and Van Gogh, it’s the work
of a young Picasso taking his first steps
towards recognition outside Spain.
MUSEU PICASSO
Acquired in 1932 by the Junta de Museus.
In 1963, when the museum was opened, it
became part of the permanent collection.
Sock 2010 Mixed media. 2.85 m
ANTONI TÀPIES (1923-2012)
Antoni Tàpies made few public sculptures, but Sock is – or could have been – the exception.
In 1991, as one of Catalonia’s most prestigious living artists, he was invited to create
a sculpture for the huge oval hall inside the museum. But the prospect of an 18m holey
sock caused such a n outcry that the project was cancelled. In 2010, the Tàpies foundation
presented a 2.85 metre version of a work that pays tribute to simple, everyday things.
Turning a humble, functional sock into a monumental sculpture invites reflection on the
hidden power of ordinary objects, but also on the artist’s experience of old age, a time
when straightforward actions – like putting on a sock – become a reminder of mortality.
St Mary Magdalene,
cap a l’any 1470
Tempera on wood 144 x 73 cm
JAUME HUGUET (1412 – 1492)
Virginal she may not be, but with her worldly
and direct gaze, Mary Magdalene is here
painted as a lady of the royal court, with the
attributes of the Virgin Mary. She sits on her
throne, resplendent in the robes of a queen,
holding a rosary, within a gilded frame with
fine fluted columns in the purest Catalan
Gothic style.
The painting confers an air of regal
mystery beyond that of her simple halo.
The light around her face and smooth
folds of her robes show the influence of
Italian naturalism, while the meticulous
detail draws on the Flemish tradition.
The elegance, fragility and refinement
of his work have earned Huguet a place
as one of the greatest Catalan Gothic
painters.
FUNDACIÓ FRANCISCO GODIA
Work acquired by Francisco Godia.
ALSO NOT TO
BE MISSED…
The Spanish Wedding,
1870
MARIÀ FORTUNY (1838 – 1874)
Though he died at 36, Fortuny is considered
the greatest Spanish painter of
the 19th century after Goya. The state
funded his early studies in Rome, and
commissioned large-scale paintings of
the Spanish-Moroccan War of 1859. His
travels in Northern Africa made a huge
impact, turning him into one of Spain’s
greatest Romantic painters of the
Orient. After 1866 he turned to scenes
of Spanish manners and customs, such
as this one, set in a richly decorated
18th-century sacristy.
The Spanish Wedding shows off Fortuny’s
technical virtuosity, his mastery
of light and his fascination with costume
and period details. Considered the
finest example of his mature style, The
Spanish Wedding catapulted its author
to international fame.
MNAC
Acquired by public subscription in 1922.
Cactus Man I, 1939
JULI GONZÁLEZ (1876 - 1942)
A starkly dissected body erupts into
spikes, as World War II breaks out in
Europe. Juli González was a leading
figure in the Parisian avant-garde, and a
pioneer of the use of welding and cutting
techniques to create sculptures in iron.
This fragmented figure, undergoing
its symbolic metamorphosis, breaks
with traditional ideas of symmetry,
creating an interplay of contrasting
forms and suggesting a new concept of
volume. In González’ cubist investigations
he sliced and folded sheet metal,
using iron bars to ‘draw in space’ and
create the wiry artworks that won him
international fame.
MNAC
Donated by Roberta Gonzalez, the artist’s
daughter, in 1972, and became part of
the collection in 1973.
Luxury for less
Barcelona’s Michelin-starred chefs open the season
with luxurious new ideas that won’t break the bank.
By Ricard Martín
Black is a secret restaurant, but
they’re not trying to keep you out: you
don’t need to know the maitre d’s
mother-in-law, or mutter a secret
password before you’re allowed in.
You just need to know it’s there, and
ask to be shown the way in. But it’s not
a traditional restaurant either: this is
the first vodka and caviar lounge in
Spain. In an paradoxical twist you’ll
find the most exclusive food on the
planet, Beluga sturgeon caviar,
alongside one of the most accessible –
you enter Black via the La Royal
hamburger bar.
Inside, Black is as dark and sleek as
an expensive cocktail bar, with red
neon to remind you that you’ve
arrived somewhere cool. Triple
Michelin-starred chef Paco Pérez has
designed a menu of cold dishes on
which, as well as straight-up caviar,
you’ll find a mouth-watering array of
dishes that feature caviar as a key
ingredient, created with imagination
and a sense of humour . ‘This isn’t
exactly a place for sit-down suppers,’
explains Pérez. ‘It’s about informal
snacks and surprises.’ The restaurant
has an open kitchen from whose bar
the tapas and main dishes are served.
Another chef who’s upping their
game is Romain Fornell. In a bold
move, the youngest chef ever to be
awarded a Michelin star – back when
he was 25 – has become the first
Michelin-starred chef in Barcelona to
offer an all-in fixed price lunch menu.
It costs €39, at Caelis at the Palace -
the most solemn dining room in the
city (with the possible exception of
Via Veneto). ‘We have to move with
the times,’ says Fornell, ‘if we were
only serving two covers at midday, I’d
rather shut up shop.’ It’s not an
arbitrary decision: Fornell has just
taken over ownership of the
restaurant with Alan-Pierre Benteo
and Eric Basset, and placed his stamp
on the whole business, with a new,
contemporary interior that makes a
refreshing contrast to the bourgeois
gravity of the hotel.
The third Michelin chef to shake
things up is Jordi Cruz, after winning
back his second star at l’Àbac. He’s
returning to his roots with Ten’s, a
tapas bar on the site of the original
Àbac, opposite the Estació de França
– maintaining the original
restaurant’s green tiles. His
CAELIS
ambitions go beyond reproducing or
reinventing classics like croquettes
and patatas bravas, but he hasn’t
gone overboard on the design. ‘I
didn’t want to create anything too
showy. I just wanted to transfer the
concept of quality dining to the
world of tapas, even if we’re serving
dishes that never existed before,’
explains Cruz.
It’s unostentatious, functional and
immaculately presented, with a select
menu of only 20 tapas. Here’s a
challenge: spend €120 between two
and you can try them all.
Inspiring jewellery
Lucía Vergara started out making necklaces, and ended
up creating her own label, Après Ski. She’s left for
London, but her Born studio remains. By Laia Beltran
Our Garden Needs its Flowers takes
its name from a 1985 album by
Jess Sah Bi and Peter One, songs
that mix country and western with
traditional African tunes, folk from
the Ivory Coast refracted through
the prism of cowboy nostalgia.
They’re intoxicating melodies that
have a serious social message.
Lucía Vergara has borrowed the
title for the latest collection from
Après Ski – it’s her homage to the
obscure artists that have provided
the soundtrack to long hours in her
small studio in the Born. As she
works, the only moments of
silence are the pauses between
songs, as Dirty Beaches follows
Adriano Celentano, Jens Lekman
or Dominant Legs.
Our Garden Needs its Flowers
isn’t Lucia Vergara’s debut, but it’s
her first collection in the strict
sense of the term – taking a source
of inspiration and making it the
basis of a creative statement. She
makes it look easy, but it’s not:
creativity’s like style, you have it or
you don’t. Lucía has both in spades.
She doesn’t identify with any
particular place: she was born, and
studied, in Valencia, and from there
she made the leap to Barcelona,
attracted by the possibility of
working in fashion. Our Garden
Needs its Flowers is the culmination
of a career that began out of
curiosity; while working for designer
Lydia Delgado she started making
her own necklaces. First her friends
asked for them, then her friends’
friends – the result was Après Ski.
Around
Town
Edited by Eugènia Sendra
esendra@timeout.cat
Born to run
Want to get know to Barcelona at street level?
We suggest three ways to run the city. By Eugènia
Sendra
World decathlon champion Roger
Roca recommends that beginners start
on the flat, and alternate walking and
jogging. If possible it should be green
– to avoid breathing in too much
carbon dioxide – and central: the
obvious choice is Ciutadella Park.
It’s a simple circuit, around two km
in total, which starts and finishes at
the beginning of Passeig Picasso.
The route misses some of the park’s
features, such as the lake or the
Catalan Parliament buildings, but if
you’re left wanting more, it can easily
be extended. Be warned: on a Sunday
afternoon, the route indicated by
green markers will involve a lot of
slow-moving obstacles.
There are plenty of online resources
with detailed route descriptions and
maps – for our second challenge we
suggest a simple circuit of Montjuïc.
You can get to the start point using the
cable car, or just walking – a good
warm-up. It’s a 1.3 km run, close to the
castle cemetery. To extend the route,
you can simply repeat the circuit, or
for variety, try the longer version,
following the perimeter of the castle
and the museum, passing the seaward
walls and the funicular station. The
second route clocks in at 2km.
Barcelona’s city council recently
published Barcelona Corre, by Pere
Bosch and Núria Blanco, which
presents 23 routes for runners. It’s in
Catalan, but you can find three selected
routes in English at www.bcn.cat/
barcelonablog (search ‘corre’). One of
the most popular routes is number 5 –
2.6 km along Avinguda Diagonal
between C/ Badajoz and C/Josep Pla.
You’ll have to dodge bikes and
benches, but you’ll also see plenty of
other runners who appreciate a wellfinished
road surface.
La Pedrera turns 100
La Pedrera, the last major work Gaudí saw to
completion, is celebrating its centenary. Before the
candles are lit, Eugenia Sendra dusts off its history.
The peephole opens, and behind the
wooden doors and a wrought-iron
grille appears Carmen Burgos Bosch.
She moved into Casa Milà in the 1950s
and is the most high-profile of the
house’s four remaining residents –
something of a living national
treasure. She is the last to receive
visitors in the original interiors that
Antoni Gaudí designed in 1906, and
despite her 81 years, is happy to show
me every corner of her 300 m2 flat.
She says it was a wise move to follow
the advice of her husband, notary
public Ramon Maria Roca Sastre – he
told her to keep the coal-fired oven. The
kitchen cabinets are ideal, not too high
and not too low, she adds, opening and
closing them with brio. What brought
this well-known family of lawyers to La
Pedrera? ‘My father-in-law fell in love
with it, but everyone told him it was a
monstrosity, far too dark,’ she explains,
in what was her husband’s bedroom.
She leads on to the bathroom, pointing
out all the doors – there are five – and
the column in the middle of the room.
Her mother used to wonder out loud
what they had done to deserve such an
impractical bathroom.
In the plaster of the living room
wall, Gaudí created – ‘and signed,’
adds Carmen – a sgraffito of a cross,
the Catalan flag and a heart. She talks
about the luminosity and the quiet
inside the house, emphasising the
24 Time Out BCN Guide November 2012

importance of the natural light and the
sense of calm created by the central
light well.
She remembers the market in the car
park, the boarding house on the first
floor and the bingo hall – all businesses
started by the owners of the building
during the 1950s, to generate some
income for a work of genius that was
running at a loss. The architect Barba
Corsini renovated the loft and laundry
rooms – the space that now houses the
Espai Gaudí – to create 13 duplex
apartments. ‘It was the only full-scale
modern-day reworking of one of
Gaudí’s works by a Barcelona architect
who was important in his own right,’
says Joaquim Ruiz Millet, author of a
monograph on Barba Corsini, and
director of the gallery H2O.
Barba Corsini created parabolic
arches, played with curves, designed
small lofts to optimize the use of space
and experimented with what he called
‘interior architecture.’ He designed the
lighting and the furniture. All that
remains of these efficient living spaces,
as striking as film sets and inhabited by
the in-crowd of the period, are Francesc
Català Roca’s photographs, the
architect’s drawings, some film footage
and the odd newspaper report. The
apartments themselves were destroyed
in 1995, despite an initial agreement
with the Caixa Catalunya bank –
owners of the building since 1986 – to
preserve two of them.
The building as a whole is
supported on columns, which means
that the façade is not load-bearing, and
becomes a curtain wall, allowing free
distribution of the internal spaces.
Gaudí could move the façade and make
each apartment different, and kept
trying out new ideas until the client’s
patience ran out. The client in question
was Rosario Segimon, a wealthy
widow who married Pere Milà, a
developer. He promised her the finest
house on the Passeig de Gràcia, but she
ended up paying for it. The signing of
the construction completion certificate
was delayed until 1912, although the
building had been completed two
years earlier.
Música
Festival
del Mil·lenni
Founded 14 years ago, at the end of the
century – and of the millennium, hence
the name – this festival’s original
raison d’être was to plug the gap in the
city’s musical calendar during the last
and the first months of the year,
traditionally a live music desert. Times
have changed, and the city now has a
steady stream of gigs to keep us warm
through from December to February.
But the Festival del Mil·lenni has
grown too: this year the festival begins
in November, and, just for comparison,
last year’s festival went on well into
spring. It starts with a bang: the first
acts are The Divine Comedy and Patti
Smith who – and this is another of the
festival’s defining characteristics – will
both be playing stunning venues. Neil
Hannon will be performing The Divine
Comedy’s back catalogue of baroque
pop alone, and at the piano – a format
that allows him freedom to interact
with the audience – in the welcoming
ambience of the Casino de l’Aliança in
Poblenou. Meanwhile Patti Smith will
be promoting her most recent album,
the magnificent Banga (2012), backed
by a four-piece band, at the Palau de la
Música. –Marta Salicrú
The spacious café at the Estació de França
re-opens as The Station, a late-night bar with live
music. By Ricard Martín
CARLA TRAMULLAS
Without falling into the hoary clichés
of cinema – brief encounters, missed
connections, last goodbyes – railway
stations are sad places. Genuinely sad,
sordid and grimy, with none of the
romance of the silver screen: it’s all
lukewarm coffee, plastic-wrapped
pastries and blocked drains. By
evening the despair among the last
travellers is palpable, leaden eyes
glued to the departures board.
So we should all be grateful that the
only station café in Catalonia with a
glimmer of personality, at Barcelona’s
grand but underused Estació de
França, is opening its doors again.
With the self-explanatory moniker
The Station, it will warm the hearts of
locals who remember it as the place
where workers on the early shift
downed breakfast sandwiches and
coffees laced with brandy, shoulder to
shoulder with clubbers emerging from
Magic and the late-lamented Woman
Caballero – two crowds whose only
common denominator was the need
for company and one more drink.
The Station is still the place for
early-risers and nighthawks: it opens
at half past six in the morning and
closes at 3am. What was once an
echoing, utilitarian hall with Formica
tables dispersed among marble
columns has been converted into a jazz
greenhouse, where 12-foot plants
disappear up towards the ceiling.
During the day snacks and lunches are
served: early evening is the time to
appreciate its charm, as the only bar in
Barcelona promoting late-night
clubbing with live bands.
