1. General characteristics
I. Język polski
1. Ogólna charakterystyka
In the Republic of Poland, Polish is the official language.
According to the data of the Central Statistical Office
on June 30 th , 2010, the number of people living in Poland
amounted to 38,190,000. According to the national census
of 2002, Polish is used at home by 97.8% of residents (include
additionally to another language – by 1.3% of residents);
0.1% of residents use a language other than Polish
and in the case of 2.0% of residents the language they use
is unknown. Among all Polish residents 96.7% declares to
have Polish nationality, 1.2% declares non-Polish nationality
and in the case of 2.0% the nationality is unknown.
From the historical point of view, Polish belongs to the
Slavonic group of languages, belonging to the Indo-European
languages. In the Slavonic group of languages along
with Czech, Slovak, Lower Sorbian and Upper Sorbian (as
well as Kashubian and other extinct dialects of Slavs living
in the lower Elbe basin), Polish constitutes the Western
Slavonic group. In the east, Poland has borders with
nations speaking languages belonging to the Eastern Slavonic
group – Ukrainian and Belarusian. In the northeast,
Poland has a short border with Russians (the Kaliningrad
Oblast) who are the third nation speaking a language from
the Eastern group of languages. The languages of other
contemporary neighbors of Poland belong to other language
groups of the Indo-European group: German belongs
to the Germanic languages and Lithuanian to the
Baltic group.
Polish as a national language has its variants. First of
all, the general language can be distinguished (in other
words: the general cultural dialect of the national language).
Aside from that, regional and community dialects
can be named.
The general language is used in all social institutions
(e.g. schools, offices, churches, etc.), in scientific and cultural
centers, in literature, press and other mass media. It
is used by all members of the nation to communicate in all
walks of life. It has its written form (literary language) and
its spoken form (colloquial language).
The Polish literary language has a few hundred year
old history. Since the 16 th century, it has been codified in
grammar books and dictionaries. Certain rules of spelling
and pronunciation have been established. Regional
W Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej język polski używany jest
jako język oficjalny.
Zgodnie z danymi Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego
w dniu 30 czerwca 2010 r. ludność Polski wynosiła
38 190 000 osób. Wg danych narodowego spisu powszechnego
z 2002 r. językiem polskim w kontaktach domowych
posługuje się 97,8% mieszkańców kraju (w tym razem
z innym językiem 1,3% mieszkańców), wyłącznie innym
językiem posługuje się 0,1% mieszkańców, a w przypadku
2,0% mieszkańców nie ustalono języka. Spośród mieszkańców
Polski 96,7% zadeklarowało narodowość polską,
1,2% zadeklarowało narodowość niepolską, a w przypadku
2,0% mieszkańców narodowości nie ustalono.
Historycznie język polski jest jednym z języków grupy
słowiańskiej, należącej do rodziny indoeuropejskiej.
W grupie słowiańskiej wraz z językiem czeskim, słowackim,
dolno- i górnołużyckim (a także kaszubskim i wymarłymi
dialektami Słowian mieszkających w dorzeczu
dolnej Łaby) język polski tworzy odłam zachodniosłowiański.
Od wschodu Polacy sąsiadują z narodami mówiącymi
językami ze wschodniego odłamu grupy słowiańskiej
– ukraińskim i białoruskim. Na niewielkim odcinku
na północnym wschodzie naszymi sąsiadami są Rosjanie
(obwód kaliningradzki), trzeci lud należący do wschodniego
odłamu Słowian. Pozostali nasi współcześni sąsiedzi
wchodzą w skład innych grup językowych w rodzinie
indoeuropejskiej: Niemcy należą do grupy germańskiej,
a Litwini – bałtyckiej.
Język polski, jako język narodowy, ma swoje odmiany.
Wyróżnia się przede wszystkim język ogólny (inaczej:
ogólną odmianę kulturalną języka narodowego) oraz odmiany
regionalne i środowiskowe.
Język ogólny używany jest we wszystkich instytucjach
społecznych (szkołach, urzędach, kościołach itp.),
ośrodkach naukowych i kulturalnych, w literaturze, prasie
i innych środkach masowego przekazu. Służy do porozumiewania
się we wszystkich dziedzinach życia przez
wszystkich członków narodu. Ma formę pisaną (język literacki)
i mówioną (język potoczny).
Polski język literacki ma kilkaset lat tradycji. Od XVI
wieku był kodyfikowany w gramatykach i słownikach. Istnieją
ustalone zasady pisowni i wymowy. Odmiany regionalne
polskiego języka narodowego (dialekty i gwary)
