Students of all ages, abilities and ethnic backgrounds choose Linwood College for learning.
Innovative subject programmes provide many different learning opportunities for students to gain
qualifi cations.
There is a course for everyone at Linwood College.
Students entering school in Year 9 take a broad range of subjects designed to form a solid
foundation for the future.
In Year 9 and 10 students are grouped in classes according to ability. Extension classes and
opportunities at both Year 9 and Year 10, operate for gifted and talented students. Students are
encouraged to participate in national and international competitions or examinations. Students who
need academic reinforcement programmes are placed in appropriate classes.
Year 9 students who have talent in ICT and are interested in developing their e-learning skills will
have the opportunity to apply for our Digital Learning class. This will provide students with the
ability to be fl exible, technologically advanced and confi dent through an enhanced e-Learning
programme.
All Year 9 students will be taken through a digital citizenship programme.
Year 9 Programme
All students in Year 9 take English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education,
Health, Core Art, Food Technology, Digital Technology and Core Music. In addition they
choose two optional subjects from Art, Fabric Technology, Chinese, Maori, Design and Visual
Communications, Metal, Wood, Music and Drama.
Year 10 Programme
All students in Year 10 take English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education
and Health. In addition they choose two optional subjects from Art, Economics, Fabric
Technology, Home Economics, Chinese, Maori, Digital Information Technology, Design and Visual
Communications, Metal, Wood, Music and Drama.
Some Year 10 classes are encouraged to work towards gaining a number of NCEA Level 1 credits
as extension to prepare them for a full year of study towards formal qualifi cations in Year 11.
Junior Graduation Programme
The graduation system is a mechanism by which we recognise high but expected standards in the
areas of managing self, participating and contributing and service to the school community.
The programme aims to encourage students to achieve their best with active reward for both
achievement and effort at all ability levels. It also facilitates comprehensive tracking of student
performance and achievement.
Students graduate each term with an Achieved, Merit or Excellence and the fi nal graduation from
the year level is a culmination of all terms. The system is designed to also alert our junior students
to the way in which the NCEA standards based system works, so they can aim for excellence.
The end-of-year ceremony is a very positive one, acknowledging the results of student effort,
attitude and behaviour.
Academic Conferencing
The Academic Conferencing process is designed to actively assist in raising student achievement.
Students will be increasingly aware of their own achievement and academic goals. They take a
more active role in the responsibility of their success. Students are mentored through this process
with the support and guidance of academic mentors, subject teachers and the pastoral system.
The inclusion and support of parents/caregivers is paramount in student success.
All students sit achievement and/or unit standards towards National Certifi cates of Educational
Achievement. Instead of traditional Year 11, 12, and 13 classes, Linwood has moved to a tertiary
model which encourages multi-level study. Students choose from a range of subjects at 100, 200,
and 300 levels, appropriate to their learning and ability, thus creating specifi c and targeted learning
pathways.
All students receive regular feedback on their progress through academic tracking and academic
conferencing.

A number of students undertake tertiary level courses at university, polytechnic or private training establishments as part of
their secondary programme.
Students leave Linwood well equipped for the next phase of life, whether it be for tertiary study or in the work force.
There are as many different pathways to the future as there are Linwood graduates. Former Linwood students can be found
in many different, prominent and valuable roles in New Zealand and overseas.

“All students are challenged to try out new things and be involved”
School Spirit
Students all belong to one of four houses, overseen by staff and student house leaders.
Competition between the four houses – Kapura (Fire), Rangi (Sky), Whenua (Earth), and Wai (Water)
subjects. New Zealand is a country which offers a wide variety of outdoor opportunities. The
beauty and dramatic environment changes from the coast to the Southern Alps. Our small
population means students can experience the outdoors with few other people.
The programme consists of outdoor activities, tourism trips and a choice of four academic subjects
from an extensive range of courses including English language tuition.
Activities range from half day to full day to occasional overnight trips. As well, students may choose
Our community provides support for the students’ learning, growth and development. There are excellent systems to help
any student who may be having personal diffi culties which hinder their ability to learn, participate and enjoy school. The
aim is to create a safe, caring and inclusive culture which cultivates positive behaviours and promotes values conducive to
helping all students succeed. The dimensions of this culture focus on our values and provision of a safe orderly environment
that has a clear discipline code. The foundation of such a culture fulfi ls our primary purpose of developing engaged learningfocused
and achievement–oriented students.
Mentors supported by Deans have the fi rst line of responsibility for the academic and personal welfare of the students. They
also manage behaviour issues in conjunction with the Director of Deans and Deputy Principal.
Every student belongs to a mentor group. Junior mentor groups are made up of Year 9 or Year 10 mentor classes. In
the senior school each mentor group is made up of students from Years 11 to 13. A whänau or family atmosphere is
encouraged where students themselves are actively involved in supporting each other. We believe these mentor groups
assist in developing meaningful relationships with students, families and whänau so that your child can truly excel in
whatever educational pathway they choose.
Two counsellors and a social worker provide a confi dential and professional counselling service to students. They are
assisted by our RTLB, school nursing team, and a doctor and physiotherapist also provide free consultations once a week
