Support to People with an Intellectual Disability who are<br />

commissi<strong>on</strong>ed Experiencing this systematic Crisis Pregnancy review <strong>and</strong> critique <strong>of</strong> Irish <strong>and</strong><br />

internati<strong>on</strong>al literature relating to intellectual disability, pregnancy,<br />

counselling, <strong>and</strong> crisis pregnancy. The study aimed to describe the key<br />

challenges faced by women with intellectual disabilities in accessing<br />

health <strong>and</strong> social work services during crisis pregnancy. The study<br />

also aimed to identify internati<strong>on</strong>al models <strong>of</strong> good practice regarding<br />

crisis pregnancy counselling <strong>and</strong> support for women with intellectual<br />

disabilities.<br />

1.2 Research aims<br />

The research had the following aims:<br />

• To provide a synthesised <strong>and</strong> summarised overview <strong>of</strong> key<br />

debates, issues <strong>and</strong> findings highlighted in theoretical <strong>and</strong><br />

research literature <strong>on</strong> intellectual disability, counselling,<br />

pregnancy <strong>and</strong> crisis pregnancy.<br />

• To compare key internati<strong>on</strong>al debates, issues <strong>and</strong> findings with<br />

issues arising for Irish women with intellectual disabilities<br />

experiencing crisis pregnancy.<br />

• To generate an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the factors that c<strong>on</strong>tribute to an<br />

unplanned pregnancy for women with an intellectual disability.<br />

• To explore the level <strong>and</strong> range <strong>of</strong> risk factors - such as age,<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ship status, socio-ec<strong>on</strong>omic <strong>and</strong> cultural factors - that<br />

are related to adverse outcomes.<br />

• To identify nati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>and</strong> internati<strong>on</strong>al peer-reviewed literature<br />

exploring the impact <strong>of</strong> a crisis pregnancy <strong>on</strong> women with an<br />

intellectual disability, including the direct <strong>and</strong> indirect effects <strong>of</strong><br />

the pregnancy.
