side effects <strong>of</strong> medicati<strong>on</strong>, family roles, parenting resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities<br />

<strong>and</strong> child development.<br />

Support to People with an Intellectual Disability who are<br />

<strong>Accessible</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Appropriate</strong> <strong>of</strong> Provisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Review</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Literature</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Experiencing Crisis Pregnancy<br />

• It was suggested that sexuality <strong>and</strong> relati<strong>on</strong>ships educati<strong>on</strong><br />

should be provided over the l<strong>on</strong>g term, at a simple level, <strong>and</strong><br />

with a <strong>on</strong>e-to-<strong>on</strong>e follow up. Informati<strong>on</strong> should be timely, <strong>and</strong><br />

presented in a meaningful way to people (Family Planning, New<br />

South Wales).<br />

• Peer support groups for women with intellectual disability were<br />

found to be beneficial, especially with regard to discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the power discrepancies that are felt by women<br />

in general (Walsh et al., 2000).<br />

Challenges relating to pregnancy <strong>and</strong> parenting<br />

• Challenges faced by women with intellectual disability<br />

experiencing pregnancy <strong>and</strong> parenthood emerged as: accessing<br />

sexual health informati<strong>on</strong>, accessing sexual health services,<br />

inadequate informati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>and</strong> attitudes to pregnancy <strong>and</strong><br />

parenthood.<br />

• A number <strong>of</strong> challenges emerged that were faced by health<br />

<strong>and</strong> social care services in the provisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> support to women<br />

with intellectual disability experiencing unplanned pregnancy.<br />

These included difficulties in talking to a woman with an<br />

unplanned pregnancy about her possible opti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> about<br />

issues such as child protecti<strong>on</strong>; difficulties experienced<br />

by women with intellectual disability in underst<strong>and</strong>ing the<br />

complexity <strong>of</strong> pregnancy <strong>and</strong> its implicati<strong>on</strong>s; fear surrounding<br />

the birth heightened by lack <strong>of</strong> knowledge; feelings <strong>of</strong> isolati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

misc<strong>on</strong>cepti<strong>on</strong>s about the pregnancy <strong>and</strong> childbirth as well as
