President’s Message
Kevin Cunningham, President, R.C.A. • president@ramsaycalgary.ca • 403-680-0854
It’s been a summer of adventure for me and my family. We climbed
mountains and rode to other cities on our bikes, ate crabs we caught
in the ocean and spent many nights in the comfort of our tent. It’s
mid-August as I write this message and it seems like we are getting
a very nice late summer. I hope you are all getting out to enjoy it
while the sun is shining.
Block Captains
The Association is always looking for great ways to keep in contact
with Ramsay residents. The idea the of block captains has come up.
In our recent strategic planning workshop, the board identified this
as a priority. A block captain would, from time to time, knock on
their neighbours’ doors, host a small event, keep in touch with what
priorities their area feel are relevant to them. The captains would
then report back to the board so that we make the best possible
decisions for our community. I would hope that this would be a
very fun and very social position that would not really take up any
more time in your day (3-4 hrs socializing with your neighbours per
month possibly). Please contact me at president@ramsaycalgary.ca if
you want to step up and claim your block.
Ramsay Pride
I had the opportunity to venture into other communities this summer
while vacationing and visiting. Stepping out of Ramsay gave
me some perspective on how far Ramsay has come as a community
in just the short time I’ve lived here (seven years and counting). I’ve
also been walking through Ramsay. You can see the pride of ownership
and residency, there are some fantastic yards,
gardens are lush, and most important, people are outside
and open for conversation. There is nothing I like
more than sitting on my front porch in the evening
and inviting people up to have a tea or other beverage.
Ramsay Inspiration Series #5: One Day in Ramsay
Weather permitting, we will have a ‘Ramsay Photo Day’ event on
Saturday, September 14th. We will gather together at the hall at
10:00 am for a short time and then head out as groups or individuals
into the community snapping photos of what you feel most represents
Ramsay as a vibrant beautiful inner city community. We will
gather all the photos (digitally) and then put together two pieces
of media, a video and a book of some form. It’s going to be great,
and of course there will be food, beverages and lots of great people
so make sure you save the date. And of course you don’t need to be
a professional photographer. You only need to have a camera (most
smart phones have excellent cameras).
Some examples of subjects are: people (get their permission), houses,
businesses, buildings, yards, fences, objects in yards, street signs,
public art, cars, bikes. Really anything that says… this is Ramsay!
Rebuilding 0ur Zoo: A Chat with Malu Celli
Nancy Janovicek
First, let’s get to the bottom of the rumour
that the tigers and lions were sent to the
prisoner cells at the Calgary courthouse
during the flood.
Dr. Malu Celli, Animal Curator at the
Calgary Zoo, explained that officials at the
courthouse were following the protocol of a
very old flood evacuation plan. Under this
old plan, the zookeepers would have walked
the elephants to McMahon Stadium, too.
Neither of these scenarios would have been
safe for the animals. The current flood
evacuation plan focuses on reducing the
animals’ anxiety by keeping them together
in a location that’s close to the zoo. The
animals evacuated from their habitats
moved to the Animal Health Centre, which
is beside the north zoo parking lot. Animal
welfare is a core value of the Calgary Zoo,
and it’s one of the issues that attracted
Malu to working in zoos.
Malu took up her position at the Calgary
Zoo in May 2011, and has been living in
Ramsay for about a year. Born in Brazil,
she moved to the United Kingdom
for university. She earned her PhD
in Primatology from Kyoto
University in Japan. Her
thesis compared how chimpanzees
in the wild and in
captivity used tools. She
observed chipanzees in
Africa to learn how they
transferred knowledge to
the next generation. The
captive animals were rescue chimps from
pharmaseutical labs. Based on the findings
from her research in Africa, she developed
puzzles to encourage the rescue chimpanzees
(who had had suffered in poor living
conditions) to solve problems. She noticed
that this stimulation enriched their lives.
After university, she worked on wildlife
films for the NHK, the Japanese national
broadcaster. When she moved back to the
UK in 2006, Malu started to work at zoos
because it offered a different opportunity to
educate people about conservation and animal
welfare. Before moving to Calgary, she
worked at the London Zoo and the Bristol
Zoo. At the Calgary Zoo, she is the curator
for primates, birds, and small mammals.
She enjoys working at zoos because it is an
opportunity to share her knowledge with
a broad audience: “I’ve always been really
passionate about animals and wanted to
share that with people.” Education is one
of the most important functions of the zoo.
And correcting people’s misperceptions
about animals is part of that job. I’m sure
that many Ramsayites shared my concerns
about what might have happened if the
hippos had broken loose during the flood.
I’d only recently learned that hippos kill
more people in Africa than any other animals
do. Why? And how come more people
don’t know this? Malu explained that animals
behave the way that they do because
that’s what they do. Male hippos are
extremely territorial. When they bite another
hippo to defend their territory,
they make a point. When they
do the same thing to a human
in a raft, the consequences are
more dire.
ourselves
We need to put
in their position:
“It’s
no different
than someone
coming into your house. You’d want
to punch him in the face!” A hippo is just
protecting its pod and family when an
uninvited stranger comes into his space.
Education about conservation is challenging
because people connect with animals
rather than ecosystems. I confess that I go
to the zoo to learn about tigers, play with
the sea otters, and admire the peacocks. I
cringe at the insect displays, even though
I understand that these critters play an
essential role in preserving ecosystems. I’m
not alone. People tend to be less concerned
about the animals that they fear. Malu
understands why people are passionate
about animals that they love. But when
we go to the zoo, we need to learn how
all animals contribute to the world: “The
Madacascar hissing cockroach is an amazing
animal. Come to admire it, not cuddle it.”
When the flood happened, Zoo employees
had twelve hours to evacuate the animals.
Malu was one of the employees who slept
at the zoo to ensure that the animals got to
higher ground. For Malu, saving the meerkats
was the most emotional experience of
the rescue. She tells the story better than I
can; go to the zoo’s website to listen to her
account (www.calgaryzoo.com/keep-it-wild/
rebuild-zoo-malu-celli). A few days later,
the city celebrated when we learned about
the meerkat pups. For the zoo employees,
these five pups were that little bit of news
that helped them deal with their sadness
and anger about the destruction at the
zoo. Only a few animals died during the
flood, but those who care for the animals
mourn every lost animal. Malu can’t help
but wonder what might have been done
if someone had been able to get there
sooner. Losing buildings is difficult for the
people who work with the animals, too.
Malu explained, “We work so hard to give
them the best quality of life that we can.”
Coming to terms with the fact that the zoo
will never be the same hasn’t been easy.
So what can we do to help rebuild
the zoo?
Malu has been touched by the
businesses and individuals
who have already stepped
up to lend a hand. During
the flood, folks showed up
with food for both the
animals and their caretakers.
Every little bit counts. Donations
from the kids’ lemonade stands are just
as important as the cheques with many
zeros. The zoo relies on volunteers, and
they’ll let you know when they need you.
It’s also important to be patient with the
zoo as it rebuilds. The destruction to the
infrastructure of the zoo was enormous and
more damage happened from the aftermath
effects of the flood. Everyone is working
around the clock to do repairs and make
sure that the animals are well, but it will
take a long time to get back to normal.
Maybe we should all go hug a zookeeper!
The best way to support the the zoo is to
go to the zoo. And spend some time with
the Madacascar hissing cockroaches, too.
Thanks to Ali and Anna for helping me think
of questions to ask Malu.
DramAntics Theatre Camp – Success three years running!
You may have seen it during SunFest. A crazy little play called
Once Upon A Crime, put on by kids of DramAntics about fairy-tale
characters run amok. There was the Queen of Hearts, The Mad
Hatter, Goldilocks, Cinderella, and Jack, just to name a few. What
you might not know is this play was the culmination of a wonderful
summer camp called DramAntics, now in its third year, and
part of a partnership between the Calgary Fringe Festival and the
Alexandra Centre Society.
DramAntics started in 2010 at the Alexandra Centre as a youthdirected
theatre where kids were able to write, produce, and act in
a play of their own making. Having this much child-led activity in
a theatre production was unknown territory. However it quickly
became evident that not only could kids successfully write a play in
one day, create costumes, set, and props over the next three days,
but that they could also memorize and put the whole thing on
stage by the end of the five day week, needing no adult assistance.
In other words, the kids banished the adults leading the program to
the audience because they felt so confident in their skills.
DramAntics’ first play was called Curse of the Amulet, a play about
pirates. It appeared at the Calgary Fringe Festival during SunFest to
an audience of eighty plus. Since then, DramAntics has produced a
total of six amazing plays and now runs both a Spring and Summer
camp for kids aged 9-16. The success of the program doesn’t just
come from the plays though, it also comes from what the young
actors get out of the experience. Kids who have gone through the
program have later appeared in semi-professional productions
throughout Calgary because DramAntics has not only taught them
how to act but also given them a very important tool in their theatre
inventory, the art of doing an audition. And the benefit doesn’t
stop there. Kids who have been exceedingly shy and unable to
even dream of going on stage have found the confidence to tread
the boards in front of a large audience. One student who fell into
that category went on to become a kid interviewer for the Calgary
International Children’s Festival 2013. She attributes her ability to
do this, and other things she never thought possible, directly to the
DramAntics program.
This is a program we should all be proud of. Although it attracts
kids from all over the city, a full three-quarters of the children come
from Inglewood, Ramsay, and Victoria Park. These are our kids up
there showing the people of SunFest and the Calgary Fringe Festival
just how amazing and vibrant we are. And with yet another successful
production complete we can now look forward to our 2014
Spring break and Summer camps. In fact, registration for those is
“The purpose of the newsletter is to weave the community together.” –
It’s been about a year and a half since this team started working on
the newsletter, inspired by Fred’s quote cited above. At the beginning,
Reality Is Optional Kids’ Writing Club is Back for Another Year
Kim Firmston
Did you know that a unique writing program
is right here at the apex of Inglewood
and Ramsay? Reality Is Optional Kids’
Writing Club (better known as RIO by its
members) started out with three kids who
wanted to meet and share their love of writing
and words under the umbrella of the
Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society. It has
since grown into a large program, which
not only helped launch the DramAntics
Youth Theatre Program, but also holds specialized
workshops, has a D&D club, runs a
phenomenal summer camp, and has its own
E-Zine and website. RIO even attracts some
pretty big guest speakers.
RIO will be starting its fourth year on
September 9th, 2013 from 5:30 pm to
6:30 pm. We meet in the basement of
the Alexandra Centre on the second and
last Mondays of the month and our club
is open to anyone seventeen or under.
Membership is only $40.00 a year or you
can drop in for $5.00 a meeting. Check
out our website at www.realityisoptional.
weebly.com for more information, to see
our monthly E-Zine, or to find out about
classes, camps, writing contests, and youth
writing markets.
The RIO kids
show off their
new faces
during the
fantasy make-up
workshop
RIO is a club for kids who like words. Club
members work in all forms of media and
genre from movie making, animation, poetry,
prose, and spoken word – to name a few.
A few of them have even been published
or won awards for their work. Club members
are exposed to many different ways of
working with words through games and
activities. But the thing the kids of RIO like
most is this group is child led which means,
the kids decide what they want to do and
how they want to do it. As a result we have
many fun nights sharing our words and
playing crazy games.
to help the children to participate
to their fullest ability, and will learn
many songs and activities that can be incorporated
My background includes university
topics regarding music, education, and
wellness. Over the past two years, I have
steadily provided an interactive music program
at several large daycares in Calgary,
seeing about 800 children a week!
I also function as one-half of the children’s
music duo, Rattle and Strum, and we have
just released our first album (with graphic
design by Ramsay’s own Fred Holliss)! We
will have a CD release party at the National
