2.2 Goals
To achieve this vision, the waterfront Neighbourhood centre Plan has the following goals:
lncrease Public Access to Okanagan Lake
The Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre Plan increases
the ways that the public can access and enjoy
Okanagän Lake. The Plan recommends an increase in
accesJpoints to a public lakeshore pathway and a new
public park on the waterfront.
Create EnioYable Public SPaces
Developméni of Vernon's Waterfront represents an
opportúnity to create more public spaces that are
enjoyabte
- for residents and visitors alike' The
Wåtérfront Neighbourhood Centre Plan proposes to
create a new pãrk as well as design guidelines for new
development and attractive streetscapes to contribute
positivåly to the creation of a place that people want to
spend time.
Maintain and Enhance Ecosystem Services
inis ptan recognizes the need to maintain ecological
pro."is"t anã to maintain sensitive habitat for
inreateneo species while protecting the integrity of the
Vernon Creek. Existing wetland habitat along
Okanagan Landing Road that leads to Okanagan Lake
should be protecied and enhanced as development
proceeOs. These ecosystems would also provide
residents with the opportunity to learn more about the
functions of Vernon;s natural ecosystems in a public
place.
Create a Complete Year-Round Neighbourhood for
Locals and Tourists
The Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre Plan proposes
to create a complete neighbourhood that is active yearround
and meets the néeds of residents and tourists.
To create a complete neighbourhood, a variety of
hóusing is needed to meet the demand for a range of
nousenä¡O and family types. Population density
resulting from the increased housing options will help to
support businesses in the neighbourhood centre yearround.
