Volume 35, Issue 8 Mike & Key Amateur Radio Club -- Seattle August 2007
From the Hot Seat...
We All Make The Club What It Is
by Mike Eakins K7OV, President
Hello again! It’s August again and time to
think of things, like our club picnic coming up this
month. Since this is another time of gathering, I
wanted to say something about one of the things
our club has been famous for in the past,
especially when Jo Hallstrom was our Mike and
Key Club Greeter. Jo set a high standard for
friendly receptions at our club meeting and made
us famous for our friendly atmosphere. Our August
meeting/Picnic is an opportunity to carry on that
tradition!
Here lately, I have received a couple of
emails that made the assertion that some visiting
new ones said they didn’t get the reception they
would have liked, so they did not opt to join our
club. Personally, I find this baffling, because I have
always found our meetings and gathering to be
friendly and pleasant affairs. But, one must
remember that I am not the shy and retiring type,
so I have fun anyway.
But I would like to remind all, that some
who come to our meetings are shy and need to be
greeted with warmth and smiles so that they will
know they are welcome. Every club member that I
know, is a friendly and outgoing person, so I know
this will not be a hard task for any of you. I think
what happens sometimes, is that we get caught up
in club affairs and the need to see someone in
particular and we sometimes forget to make sure
new ones are greeting and made to feel welcome at
our gatherings.
I am soliciting for someone to step up to be
our “Official” greeter so that no one will go
unnoticed. If you would like to do that, please
contact me at any meeting or by email at
k7ov@k7ov.com.
So, please, if you see a new person at our
club meetings or gatherings, go up to them and
introduce yourself. Even better, take them around
and introduce them to others as well! For my part,
1
in addition to the above, I intend to make a point
during introductions at our meetings to make a
public welcome to these ones, and will take some
time to get to know them a little bit during that time
for us all to get to know them.
Remember, you are all ambassadors at
large for the Mike and Key Club. Please invite and
make people feel friendly, both in person and on
the repeater when new ones show up. Let’s let
everyone know that the Mike and Key Club is the
“Friendly” club and the only one they need!
On Being A QSL Manager
de Fred Roberts, W6TKV
I believe the very first QSL cards were
created during the early days of broadcast radio.
For example, if John Smith who lived in Seattle
heard a broadcast station in Los Angeles, he
might send the station a letter advising them of his
hearing their station on a particular date and time.
The station in turn, would send John a letter or
postcard acknowledging his having heard their
station – in effect a QSL card. It is doubtful these
early confirmations where called “QSL cards”
even though that’s what they were.
Upcoming Club Activities - August
by Mike Dinkelman N7WA, Activity Manger
The Club picnic is coming up August 18 th ,
following the regular Club meeting. It will be held at
Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park in Renton which is
over on Lake Washington. The park has boatlaunches,
picnic shelters (we have one), playground
equipment, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, sand
volleyball courts, fishing pier, swimming area, 1.5 miles
of paved walking trails along the shoreline, and is ADA
accessible. Dave KB7PSN is organizing. The Club
provides the hamburger, hotdogs, and pop. You get to
bring potluck. For maps and other info, please see the
Club web page.
Because of the picnic, there will be no program
following the business portion of the general club
meeting. However, the September program should be
a special treat. Mitch, K7TUT will present a program on
his Amateur Radio experiences while stationed in Iraq.
I’m sure that was a fairly unique experience and Mitch
is always entertaining in print and person.
The October program will be one on antenna
modeling software by Scott AG7T. Scott did this a few
years ago but we have many new members and a
renewed interest in modeling and building antennas
(especially on HF). I am sure that if there is a certain
type of antenna you would like to see modeled, Scott
would be able to demonstrate it but let him know
BEFORE the October meeting.
Now that August is here, it’s time to think about
the Christmas Party in December. (Trust me, places
are being reserved as I write this.) I need a volunteer to
organize it.
Being A QSL Manager... [Continued from Pg 1]
Hams, using the same reasoning, used these cards to
confirm two-way contact with another station, and my
guess is that practice started on Day 1 and continuing
to the present day. Of course, in the days of the penny
post card, it was quite reasonable and widely
practiced.
Nowadays it is a more expensive practice, but still very
much in vogue – especially in the pursuit of DXCC, the
ARRL’s award for working 100 countries or entities.
The idea of entities came into practice since we talk of
Alaska and Hawaii as being countries even though
they are “states” and obviously an integral part of the
U.S. But, whether we call them countries or entities, if
you are talking DX everyone knows exactly what you
mean.
So, that brings us to the QSL Manager.
Suppose there is a station in the Alaska, and he is the
very first KL7-land station you have ever worked.
Wouldn’t you be inclined to want a confirmation of this
contact. You bet you would! Now let us suppose that
Joe, KL7ABC, spends a ton of time on the air but really
3
K7LED Relay
doesn’t have too much interest in sending confirming
QSL cards for years – after all, he has 5-Band WAS so
why does he want to QSL? What are his options?
One, he says, “Sorry, I don’t QSL any more.” Two, he
says, “Glad to send you a QSL.” – but never does.
Three, he says, “My QSL Manager is W5XYZ.” That
means you send your QSL to W5XYZ, and W5XYZ
replies with a KL7ABC QSL card – the only thing you
have to do, is to send the QSL Manager an SASE (Self
Addressed Stamped Envelope) – bearing in mind the
QSL Manager has no equity in the QSL exchanges,
he’s just being friendly and doing you both a favor.
I have served as QSL Manager in the past – 1)
a British Marine in the Falkland Islands with whom I
had a long QSO while driving home from Las Vegas to
Riverside, CA; 2) an American on the Diplomatic Staff
in Uruguay whom I met on the air and offered to handle
his QSL chores; and 3) a friend, N6CFQ, who used to
live in Riverside and then moved to Ireland for several
years and was very active on 20M.
Fred-W6TKV, M&K QSL Manager, and Russ-W7LXR,
Incoming DX QSL Manager (W7, “L” Segment)
Another well known DX QSL route is “via the
Buro” and it is just for DX QSL cards, no stateside QSL
cards. “Via the Buro” is really two totally separate
bureaus – both organized by the ARRL. One is just for
Outgoing QSL Cards and the other is just for Incoming
DX QSL Cards from around the world.
The ARRL Outgoing QSL Bureau is a much
used route for sending cards around the world (see
http://www.arrl.org/qsl/qslout.html). There is a modest
fee based upon the weight of your QSL cards, however
there are some countries not serviced and they are
listed on the referenced web site. When you send DX
cards, you are required to sort them by destination
countries, and a word of advice, you will have QSLs
which are going to be those cards which are being
handled by a QSL Manager, e.g. you worked F6ABC in
[Continued on Page 4]

August 2007
QSL Manager... [Continued from Page 3]
France, but you are sending the QSL to his QSL
Manager, G3ABC in England – for all QSL Manager
directed cards, just make sure you print the QSL
Managers call sign on both the front and back of all
such QSLs, e.g. F6ABC VIA G3ABC.
Here is a real solid QSL “card” (6”H x 12”L x 2”Thick)
mailed from the South Pole
The ARRL Incoming QSL Bureau is initially
sorted by U.S. call districts. The Incoming QSLs
directed to the 7th Call Area are shipped to someone in
that area, who, in turn, sorts all the cards by the letter
after the “7”. Thus all 26 letters (W7A, W7B, W7C – all
the way to – W7X, W7Y, W7Z) go to as many as 26
different hams in the 7th call area (some fellows handle
more than one letter). The fellow who handles
K7LED’s incoming cards and those of all the “L”s is a
great guy named Russ Fillinger, W7LXR, who lives in
Portland, OR. Before leaving home for Field Day in
Seattle, I contacted Russ and arranged a short visit
when we drove through Portland – I thought it would be
worthwhile meeting him as he is the one who will be
mailing K7LED cards to me. As a side note, for 12
years, I handled the “T”s for the 6th District Incoming
QSL Bureau – Russ, however, has many more years
of service under his belt. It was sure nice to meet him
and as it turned out, he wasn’t very far off the I-5 at all.
For our efforts, Ann and I both received the grand tour
of his card processing routine.
K7LED Relay
Russ, W7LXR, is a real DXer with a sizable
tower behind the house – he has one trophy he
showed me, a special QSL he received from a station
in Antarctica to whom he had given some helpful
assistance (see photo).
Regarding my role as QSL Manager for
K7LED, there are two things to keep in mind. First,
when the club finishes Field Day, there are a number
of hams who following a contact with K7LED, want a
K7LED QSL card and so send their QSL to the Mike &
Key ARC – my role is to respond to that request.
Second, if K7LED is used for any HF or VHF contest
event, then plan on providing me with a copy of the
associated K7LED log – that allows me to respond to
an incoming QSL request.
I used to QSL everyone I worked and have
accumulated thousands of QSL cards, but when I got
active in contesting, keeping current became an
overwhelming task. You see, each contest
represented between 500 and 1500 contacts. I still
QSL – but my days of 100% QSLing are long gone.
Best Behavior
Contributed by Sam Sullivan N7RHE
As we get on the air, some of us with new privileges,
we must be mindful of the shared resource we enjoy.
We must present a good face to all those who listen in
especially the not yet licensed. Hiram Maxim, “The Old
Man”, realized this and created some behavior
warnings which are displayed at ARRL headquarters.
I’ve seen them first hand.
Rettysnitch...at the ready.
The Rettysnitch: Invoked by ''The Old Man'' during the
early years of the hobby to combat poor operating
practices. The Wouff Hong: Every amateur should
know and tremble at the history and origins of this
fearsome instrument for the punishment of amateurs
who cultivate bad operating habits and who nourish
and culture their meaner instincts on the air. We can
only imagine the pain these corrective measures
brought.
This real solid QSL “card” was mailed from the South
Pole to Russ-W7LXR (address in center, return address
Field Day -- Steve KD7IQL / Brendan KD7IKV: We did very
well this year. Two club records were set on 40 meter phone,
and 40 meter CW. The Band Chairs were recognized for a
great job done. Ivy did 51 QSOs on GOTA, and Morgan did
20. Tim Kane was recognized for his outstanding effort from
set up, operations, Public Information, etc. Bert was another
one who was recognized for his outstanding efforts. Morgan
Pasquier was also recognized and presented a certificate for
being most outstanding youth at Field Day for her efforts in
set up, operations, etc. It looks like we will be somewhere
around 13,000 points this year so with band conditions being
what they were, this is a very good score. GOTA had 13
different operators making from 3 to 51 contacts each. The
rest of the participants were honored for the aggregate effort
of all of us. We won’t know how this score ranks among other
stations until January. This year everyone who said they
would be there, was there.
Picnic – Dave KD7PSN: Next month, after the meeting we
will have our annual picnic at South Shelter 2 at Gene
Old Business- none
New Business-
Frank asked what is going on with the disposal of the old
equipment trailer, Steve will get pictures and description to
post an ad in the Relay. Unfortunately it looks like we are
going to write up a Code of Conduct for Field Day. This boils
down to basic, common courtesy which everyone should
already know. This relates to kids running around making
noise late at night, generators running all night, etc. There
are also issues with the Barracks occupants. We may need
to publish a copy of the park rules regarding quiet hours,
generators, etc. Also the barracks issues relate to communal
living situations so a set of guidelines need to be developed.
Good of the Order- Nothing for the Good of the Order.
There being no further business, Jim moved for adjournment.
Motion Passed and Chairman Steve closed the meeting at
7:31 pm.
Attested: Dick Radford WA7NIW -- Secretary
