Research
We stay connected to current issues and monitor emerging human service conditions affecting
Pierce County through our Community Indicators website, www.communitydata.org. Not only does
the research direct our grantmaking but assists others in the community to write grants,
advocate for issues and make corporate social responsibility decisions.
Program Evaluation
Each program that receives funding is audited once a year.
Gifts-In-Kind
We administer a Gifts-In-Kind program which collects and redistributes over $1 million in goods
to local nonprofit agencies annually.
Build Community Leaders
We host Loaned Executives from local businesses to assist with fundraising, and community engagement while
connecting them with other community leaders.

Invest for
Future Success.
Dear Community Shareholders,
Since United Way of Pierce County began working in
our community more than 90 years ago, our approach to
resolving the issues our neighbors face has evolved. We
recognized that many in need have more than one need
which has guided our broad investment strategy. We
evaluated the issues that were affecting our community
the most and made those areas—Education, Income
and Health—our focus while continuing to provide
emergency services to those in crisis. We sought to
resolve those issues by funding local programs and
strengthening the systems around those issues. We also
aligned efforts in advocacy and convened volunteers to
these issue areas.
We continue to receive support through the generosity
of more than 400 workplace campaigns. By combining
the gifts of many donors, we make a collective impact,
creating important change on a large scale. Technology
has helped innovate our giving through payroll deduction,
eWay online giving and social media. In 2012, United
Way began a collaborative relationship with GivingTrax
which will help the many small businesses in Pierce
County maximize their philanthropic efforts.
In 2012, we further examined the work we were
doing and refined our strategic plan to make sure your
investments were making Pierce County a better place
for all who live here. As we head into 2013, we will
sharpen our strategy further with a much more focused
set of priorities around early childhood development,
success in school and strengthening families, while
retaining help for basic needs. United Way has the
proven ability to provide sustainable support for longerterm
prevention efforts and we know that the best
strategy for creating a thriving community is making
an early investment in our children and their families.
We are optimistic about the coming year and confident
the evolution of our work will help create the strong
and successful Pierce County we all desire.

United Way has also sought funding for projects
that allow us to examine the systems and help make
improvements. Recognizing the large military presence
in our area, we also obtained grants last year for a Center
for Military Families Coordinator who will work to better
understand the unqiue needs of the thousands of military
families in our community and ehance services to them.
We also secured funding for a Military Specialist in the
South Sound 2-1-1 call center to handle the more than
5,000 military-related calls the center receives annually.

United Way of Pierce County is committed to making
measurable improvements in the lives of people in our
community.
Our mission is best executed when we identify critical
issues and then use your gift to fund a combination of
programs and initiatives to best address those issues.
A few years ago, we turned to the community— people
like you—to ask what you felt were the most critical
issues affecting Pierce County.
The answer was Education, Income and Health, elements
that are the foundation for a good life. We set out to
learn as much as we could about these challenges and
find partners who could help us make systemic changes
in these areas.
What resulted was a focused plan to improve our
community as well as funding guidelines for contributions
made to United Way’s Community Solutions Fund. This
plan not only helps guide funding decisions, it also
includes ideas on how we can best use volunteer and
advocacy support.
2012 Strategic Planning
In 2012, United Way of Pierce County and its board
of directors analyzed the organizations strategic plan
and refined our work to help children and their families
achieve their potential. In the coming years, we will dive
deeper into the key issues affecting our community such
as early childhood development, early grade excellence
and strengthening families. The investments we make
today will have a long-term affect that will shape the
future of Pierce County.

Advocate for
change.
Only 10 percent of the funding support for human
service issues comes from philanthropy. The other 90
percent comes from government. This is why advocacy
is so important. United Way of Pierce County has a
committee of volunteers who evaluate the initiatives
being proposed for the state’s general session. They
meet with experts and determine the outcome each
initiative will have on the areas affecting Pierce County.
Once they’ve narrowed down the key initiatives, they
form an Advocacy agenda and go to work educating
local leaders on the issues and the affect their decisions
could have on our community.
Every February, United Way of Pierce County joins
other United Ways throughout Washington to meet with
legislators on the hill. United Way’s advocacy team
has had great success in their efforts and has been
instrumental in sustaining funding for vital programs
like the South Sound 2-1-1 call center.
United Way of Pierce County also creates opportunities
for individuals to advocate on their own. United Way’s
Community Indicators web site provides valuable data to
help educate citizens on the issues and equip them with
the data they need to advocate for the issues.

South Sound 2-1-1 Call Center
Received 58,934 calls in 2012, connecting people to housing,
food, utility assistance, transportation and more. We have
amoung the highest caller satifaction rates in the entire
2-1-1 system.
South Sound 2-1-1
For people in need, knowing where to turn
for help is critical. United Way of Pierce
County’s South Sound 2-1-1 call center
provides callers with access to hundreds
of non-emergency resources. Whether they
lost their home to a fire, got laid off or
don’t have access to medical care, dialing
2-1-1 can refer them to organizations that
can help. In 2012, United Way received
a grant to add a Military Specialist to the
2-1-1 staff to handle the more than 5,000
military-related calls the center receives
annually.
Your gifts help United Way administer the
program at one of the most cost-effective
rates in the state by utilizing volunteers
and work-study students to staff the call
center and running an efficient response
system. This free resource is used by
nearly 60,000 people each year. United

Volunteer to
make a difference.
Volunteer Center
Throughout Pierce County, there are hundreds of
agencies and organizations that need help. United Way
of Pierce County’s Volunteer Center connects people with
opportunities to serve, creating a way for them to share
their time and talents with others. We offer volunteer
opportunities for individuals, families, youth, seniors,
and large or small groups from businesses, schools,
churches, service clubs and any other groups with a
desire to serve our community.

- Connected 592 individuals with 157 different
nonprofit organizations through our website
- Connected 367 volunteers to volunteer opportunities

- Coordinated 43 group projects engaging 706
volunteers in 2,824 hours of service
- Coordinated and managed 19 ACT NOW projects,
engaging 98 volunteers in 392 hours of service
Youth United
United Way of Pierce County’s Youth United program
offers a variety of ways to connect youth with meaningful
volunteer opportunities. By volunteering time and
services, they discover and develop skills, apply academic
knowledge through service and learning activities, receive
recognition for their efforts and have fun helping others.
Success Achieved
- Youth United engaged 42 student leaders through
Youth Leadership Councils resulting in 145 hours
of service
- Youth United engaged 115 students in 20 service
projects resulting in 452 hours of service. This
includes projects commemorating the following days
of service:

- Youth United in partnership with 36 high schools in
all 15 school districtics in Pierce County recognized
554 students with their Varsity Letter in Community
Service. The average number of community hours
per students was 225 hours

Project:U engages people in their 20s and 30s looking to
develop, support and serve the Pierce County community.
The volunteer-led group holds social events that benefit
the community through United Way, schedule volunteer
projects throughout the area and educate their peers
about the conditions affecting our community. In 2012,
Project:U held the second annual Get Involved Gala -
The GIG. The glamorous night of dancing and food gave
young professionals an opportunity to network, learn and
raise money for our community.

United Way of Pierce County continued to focus on helping children to succeed by investing in teaching children and
training parents and caregivers to be great first teachers. The research is compelling that early learning is absolutely
vital to later success in school and life. In 2012, United Way invested in Pierce County’s Early Learning Coalition, First
5 FUNdamentals, which served over 10,000 children and 1,500 parents. United Way also provided funding to the
Children’s Museum’s Play to Learn programs, serving 707 children and teaching parents to incorporate learning into
play. Another funded effort, the Promoting First Relationships program, an evidence-based practice in early learning,
served 292 children. Additionally, 83 children received developmental screenings to help their families and caregivers
know what to teach. United Way also worked to help more early learning professionals provide the best care. More
than 200 received training and 89 childcare providers received consultations from a funded partner that will help them
better prepare the children they serve for school. United Way of Pierce County also funded 37 education programs as
part of the Community Solutions Fund.

United Way of Pierce County recognizes that a stable home and financial self-sufficiency are key to helping a family
thrive. In 2012, United Way invested in Habitat for Humanity’s Woods at Golden Givens, a 30-home residential
community complete with a shared community center and play area. United Way also provided funding for the
Pierce County Youth and Young Advisory Council, a CampFire USA programe aimed at supporting youth and young
adults experiencing or at risk for homelessness. Additionally, United Way of Pierce County continued to fund Project
Homeless Connect, connecting over 1,500 people experiencing homelessness to other important services. The
event provides services such as haircuts and health screenings and is supported by 60 local agencies and over 600
volunteers. United Way of Pierce County also funded 17 programs addressing housing and financial self-sufficiency
as part of the Community Solutions Fund.

Healthy families create

Health Care
In 2012, United Way provided funding to MultiCare’s
Ready Set Go 5-2-1-0 program. With a Community
Outreach Coordinator, made possible by the
grant, this collaborative program reached 720
medical providers, 3,810 community members
and 24 schools last year. The school programs, in
partnership with YMCA afterschool care, shared the
message of healthy eating, limited screen time and
an active lifestyle to almost 10,000 students. A sixweek
study of third and fourth graders in the program
found that one out of three increased activity and
water consumption and one out of eight students
decreased screen time. Additionally, United Way of
Pierce County funded 29 health programs as part of
the Community Solutions Fund.

Emergency and
Supportive Services
United Way of Pierce County has been supporting
local human services programs since 1921. Those
programs make up a safety net of services that
help those in need. From shelter to food to utility
assistance, the help provided for Emergency
Services is often the boost a person needs to get
on the right track. In 2012, United Way provided
funding to 34 programs in Emergency Services.
These programs helped 615,917 people recover
from homelessness, layoffs, house fires, domestic
violence and other crisis situations.

Community Investments
United Way of Pierce County raises funds through its annual workplace campaign, individual donations, grants,
bequests and program income. Those funds are reinvested in our community through grants to 117 local programs
as part of our three-year Community Solutions Fund commitments, through initiative and system investments in
our focus areas and through community programs. Additionally, United Way processes the donations of donors who
direct their gifts to designated recipients through the campaign, the state’s Combined Fund Drive and the Combined
Federal Campaign. Funds raised in 2011 were distributed in 2012.

The Value of Your Donation
United Way of Pierce County combines your gift with thousands of others to impact the most pressing issues on
a larger scale. Additionally, United Way also combines financial gifts with grants, in-kind product donations and
volunteer service to amplify gifts further. For each dollar that is donated, United Way is able to reinvest $1.21 back
into the community. Direct investments, volunteer hours valued at more than $2.6 million and more than $1.1
million dollars in in-kind products are invested each year. Further, special grants have leveraged more than $1.1
million of local, state and private funding to get projects off the ground or sustain vital efforts.

Gifts-in-Kind
United Way’s Gifts-in-Kind program partners with
individual donors and local companies to collect new
and gently-used goods. The products that are collected
are redistributed to local nonprofits agencies and
provide household items for families in transitional
homes, suits for men re-entering the workforce and
office equipment to help nonprofits run more effectively.
In 2012, Gifts-in-Kind collected $1.1 million in goods
and redistributed them to more than 40 local agencies.
On average, agencies received a $24,000 investment
through the Gifts-in-Kind program. Part of your donation
helps make this work possible.
