FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE 

FOR ALL-DAY CAMPS AND 

YOUTH ACTIVITY PROGRAMS 

For families in need of financial assistance, 

full and partial Camp scholarships 

are available to those residing within the 

corporate City limits through the Dolores 

Swoyer Camp Scholarship Fund. Financial 

assistance packages are available 

at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park 

or online at www.gaithersburgmd.gov/ 

camps. Approved financial assistance 

forms must be completed prior to registration. 

Financial aid recipients must still 

pay a $25 deposit per camp session. 

Applications received after June 1 may 

not be approved before the beginning of 

camp, so please get your application in 

as early as possible. 

PLEASE NOTE: Financial aid is NOT 

available for clinics, Creative Tot Time, 

or Children’s Summer Art Camps. For

City Seeks Donations for 

Summer Camp Scholarship Fund 

Each year the City receives hundreds 

of applications from families in need 

who want their children to enjoy the 

energizing, educational and challenging 

experiences offered by the City of 

Gaithersburg’s Summer Camps. Help a 

child have a fulfilling summer by making 

a contribution today. Donations are now 

being accepted for the Dolores Swoyer 

Camp Scholarship Fund. Named in loving 

memory of the daughter of former Planning 

Commissioner and citizen activist, 

Dolores Swoyer, the fund provides full 

and partial financial assistance to qualifying 

families. For the summer of 2010, 

127 scholarships were approved and the 

number of applications is expected to increase 

for the 2011 camp year. For more

Summer Programs 2011 

❖ Full day camps run from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Extended care will only be offered in 

the afternoons from 4 – 6 p.m.

❖ The half day YAPs programs run from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. An additional YAPs 

program will be offered at Fields Road Elementary School this year. 

❖ Individual session dates for summer clinics, Creative Tot Time, and the Children’s 

Summer Arts Camps are listed within the brochure. 

❖ Full payment for all camps will be required at the time of registration unless you 

select the payment plan option. A complete explanation of the payment plan option 

can be found on page 12. 

❖ Each camp is designed for a particular age group. Camps are broken down by 

age, not by grade. Participation in the elementary school camps is based on age 

as of September 1, 2011. Participation in the middle school camps is based on 

age as of October 31, 2011. 

❖ Make registration easier by registering online with the City’s “RecXpress” system.

❖ To qualify for a City of Gaithersburg Resident Rate, the child must live within the 

City’s corporate limits. All residents will be asked to provide proof of residency at 

the time of registration. 

❖ All faxes, drop-offs, mail-ins, and online registrations will be taken beginning February 

2 for residents and March 2 for nonresidents.

MAINSTREAM PROGRAM 

Special needs children ages 6 – 14 may be eligible to participate in our Summer Camp 

programs. If your child has special needs, a volunteer mainstream companion may be 

assigned to work one-on-one with your camper to enhance his or her experience over 

the summer. The objective of this program is to mainstream the child into the overall 

camp setting. The emphasis is not to give special or unusual attention to children, 

which tends to set individuals apart, but rather to create an atmosphere of friendship 

and acceptance. Registration and requests for companions must be made at least 

three weeks before the start of the program. For more information please contact

About Our Camps 

Air Conditioning 

The City requests air conditioning at all sites 

where available. Please note, however, that 

most of the gymnasiums in use by our programs 

do not have air conditioning. 

Extreme Heat and 

Code-Red Ozone Alerts 

When code red ozone alerts and high temperature 

warnings are issued, programs 

will limit their outdoor activity and may provide 

alternative activities, including quiet 

games, water play and special events. 

However, activities will still be held outdoors 

for short periods of time. 

Emergency Program Cancelations 

Camps at MCPS schools will not be 

held if schools are closed due to weather 

related emergencies. For information 

regarding delays and closures of MCPS 

facilities, please visit www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org. 

However, the operational 

status of camps located in City 

facilities is determined by the Director of 

the Department of Parks, Recreation, and 

Culture. Please check the City’s website at 

www.gaithersburgmd.gov for up-to-date 

information regarding emergency program 

cancelations in City facilites. 

Refund Policy 

Refund requests must be made in writing at 

least two weeks prior to the start of the program 

and are subject to a withdrawal fee of 

$25 per session. For a complete listing of the 

City’s refund policy please contact Tim “Smitty” 

Smith at 301-258-6350 x125. 

Behavior Policy 

Appropriate behavior by participants is 

expected at all times. All campers will be 

asked to sign a Character Agreement detailing 

the department’s guidelines on behavior 

and responsibility. The staff will 

work cooperatively with parents to keep 

them informed of inappropriate behavior 

and solicit their support to resolve conflicts 

and encourage positive interaction. Participants 

who remain disruptive after consultation 

with the parents may be dismissed 

from the program. 

Late Pickup Penalty 

A late fee of $3 per every 10 minutes will 

be charged to parents who arrive late to pick 

up their children. Payment is due upon arrival 

and a child may not participate again until the 

late fee has been paid.

Age Appropriate Camps 

Each camp is designed for a particular age group. Participation in the elementary 

school camps is based on age as of September 1, 2011. Each all-day elementary 

school camp is comprised of units of approximately 20 campers. Each unit is supervised 

by a Senior Counselor, who is at least a high school graduate, and a Junior 

Counselor, who has completed at least tenth grade. Participation in the middle school 

camps is based on age as of October 31, 2011. All camp sites have a Team Leader 

and one or two Assistant Team Leaders. These positions are normally filled by teachers 

or college-age students. 

Camper Information 

The City is committed to providing your child with a safe and fun summer experience. 

As a parent, help us help your child have a successful summer by providing accurate 

and factual information about: 

- Your child’s date of birth, grade, age 

- Allergies and regular medications 

- Any special medical needs your child might have 

- Accurate address/phone numbers 

A series of required camp forms will be mailed to you about one month before the 

program begins. These forms will also be available online at www.gaithersburgmd. 

gov/camps beginning April 1. Forms MUST BE completed and returned to the camp 

site on the first day your child attends camp. If your child is not currently attending a 

school in the State of Maryland, you must provide a copy of the child’s immunization 

records. 

Program Site Changes 

Due to circumstances beyond our control the Department of Parks, Recreation and 

Culture may need to move a program to an alternate site. Parents will be notified of 

all changes as soon as possible. 

Field Trips 

Your camp registration fee covers the cost of all field trips. No additional fees are 

required for your child to participate. Transportation for all field trips will be provided 

by the City of Gaithersburg or Montgomery County Public School buses and/or vans. 

Holiday 

No camp will be held on Monday, July 4.

All-day Elementary School Camps 

Ages 6 - 10 as of September 1, 2011 

Give your kids a summer they will never forget! Gaithersburg All-day Elementary 

Camps boast a variety of fun-filled activities that will keep your children on their toes. 

Campers will participate in an array of sports, arts and crafts, games, team building 

exercises, and special events. All participants go swimming multiple times a week at 

the Water Park at Bohrer Park. Campers also get to explore exciting activities off-site 

during our unique and varied field trips. Although the actual field trips have not yet 

been confirmed, campers generally visit Bowl America, Domino’s, the movies, and 

Greenbrier State Park. Please note that field trips vary according to session and may 

not be scheduled every week. There are no additional fees for field trips. 

Extended Care 

The option of extended care from 4 – 6 p.m. is available at the All-day Elementary 

School Camps. The fee for extended care is in addition to the regular camp fee. 

During extended care, your child will participate in supervised free play. Although extended 

care does not include formal programming, campers still have the opportunity 

to enjoy exciting games, sports, and arts and crafts projects.

Calling all sports enthusiasts… spend

at Lakelands Park Middle School! Camp 

Activ8 is designed to engage campers in 

fun activities that promote physical activity

X-plore the opportunities at this classic 

camp for those who enjoy a little bit of 

everything: traditional camp activities, 

outdoorsy fun, and cool trips! Camp X- 

Plore offers arts and crafts, sports, fun 

with science and cooking, indoor/outdoor 

games and great events related to 

each week’s special theme. The camp 

is located at the Robertson Park Youth 

Center – a unique “green” building complete 

with a rock-climbing wall, pool tables, 

video games and computer room

CAMP ENDEAVOR 

Join Camp Endeavor and have the best 

summer ever! Located at the Activity Center 

at Bohrer Park, Camp Endeavor has 

something for everyone. Campers participate 

in a wide variety of activities including 

sports, team challenges, games, special 

events, and amazing art projects. From 

basketball to the annual boat race, Endeavor 

gives campers the opportunity to explore 

their interests in a variety of activities and 

adventures. Participants will also take advantage 

of the on-site facilities including 

the gymnasiums, Water Park, Skate Park, 

and Miniature Golf Course. Although trips 

may vary, likely excursions include trips to 

Greenbrier State Park, an Orioles Game in 

Baltimore, the movies, Bowl America and

All-day Middle School Camps 

Ages 12 –14 as of October 31, 2011 

CAMP INNOV8 

Lights! Camera! Action! You don’t have to go to Hollywood to direct or star in your own 

movie. Camp Innov8, the City’s video camp, is located at the Olde Towne Youth Center. 

Campers will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of Digital Video Production, 

including screenwriting, editing and directing. They will complete multiple projects and 

will “premiere” their videos in a film festival at the end of the summer. Campers will also 

have the opportunity to play the starring roles in their projects. Curriculum covers basic 

operation of camera, shooting techniques, scripting and storyboarding, editing and 

graphics. Camp Innov8 campers will also swim twice a week at Bohrer Park and will 

go on location shoots and other field trips. The first session of Innov8 will be geared 

towards beginners and the second session will be designed for more advanced participants. 

Get ready to be Innov8-ive and show your creativity on video this summer!

CAMP XCELER8 

Ready, set…Xceler8! Spend the summer at this NEW, action-packed camp consisting of 

multiple field trips per session and great camp activities including games, sports, swimming 

and special events. Camp Xceler8 will meet daily at the Robertson Park Youth 

Center, and will be transported by bus or vans to various off-site destinations including 

Bowl America, Cameron Run, movie theatres, SplashDown Water Park, Six Flags, 

Adventure Park USA and much more! Additionally, campers will swim twice per week 

at Bohrer Park and should also be prepared to participate in challenging activities that 

include hiking, rafting, and indoor rock climbing. Get ready to Xceler8 towards summer

(GOG II) 

There is one last week of camp for those 

campers heading off to middle school. 

Gaithersburg on the Go II is based out of 

the Robertson Park Youth Center. There 

will be several trips during the week and 

the camp will make full use of the Center’s 

facilities, including the rock climbing 

wall, video games and game tables.

DANCE CAMP 

This innovative camp is designed to offer 

students an opportunity to sample ballet, 

tap, jazz, modern, and hip-hop. Students 

will learn some dance history and tales 

of various ballets. Camp is open to 

new and continuing students. Register

Clinic meets Tu/We/Th for two weeks 




Clinics are open to new and continuing students. Children will learn skills 

on the bars and balance beam, in vaulting and tumbling. Skills are taught 

in a safe progressive order to build strength, flexibility and confidence. 

Participants should wear a t-shirt and shorts or a leotard and have bare

BEGINNER 

AND INTERMEDIATE 

The Gaithersburg Skate Park presents 

the School of Skate! Through a combination 

of group and one-on-one instruction, 

our skate instructors create a positive 

environment that will help your child 

become a safer, better skater. Although 

the beginner and intermediate clinics 

cover different skills, the two clinics will 

occur simultaneously. Coaching will be 

provided for skaters of all different levels. 

The beginner clinic, designed for skateboard 

riders who can maneuver on open 

flat surfaces, will emphasize tack turns, 

riding fakie, safe approach to ramps and 

riding within one’s ability. The intermediate 

clinic, intended for riders who have 

some experience in a skate park, will focus 

on dropping in, stalls, grinds, ollies, 

kick flips and getting air. 

Participants are required to bring their 

own skateboards. Participants must also 

wear a skate helmet, and the use of elbow 

and knee pads is strongly recommended. 

If you do not own gear, protective is 

equipment available for use during the 

clinic. Please note that on inclement 

weather days, skaters will be moved into 

the Activity Center to participate in fun, 

skate-related activities.

Registration Information 

INTERNET: 

Use the RecXpress System to register online, 24 

hours a day, seven days per week beginning the first 

day of registration. 

Resident Registration – Wednesday, February 2 

Nonresident Registration – Wednesday, March 2 

City Resident. Must reside within the corporate City tax limits of Gaithersburg. 

A Gaithersburg mailing address does not necessarily mean that you live 

within the City corporate tax limits. 

Falsifying Registration Information by either claiming City residency or falsifying 

the ages of the camper will result in the denial of the registration. 

Camp Wait List. Please make sure that the registration form has your 1st, 2nd, 

and 3rd choice for the Camp programs. If the first camp choice is filled, the 

camper will be placed on the waiting list and registered in the second choice if 

space is available. If all three camps are filled, the parent/guardian of the registrant 

will be notified. 

Summer Camp Payments. You must check the payment plan box on the registration 

form or internet display screen. Payment plans will NOT be available after 

June 1, 2011. Customers who select the payment plan option are responsible for 

making their required payments when they become due. Patrons may choose to 

make a payment on-line each month on their RecXpress account, mail or submit 

a payment to the Activity Center at Bohrer Park. All payment plans will be assessed 

a 3% late fee if the payment is received more than five (5) days after the 

due date. Outstanding balances as of June 2, 2011 could result in the child being 

withdrawn from the program. 

Refund Policy. Refund requests must be made in writing at least two weeks prior 

to the start of the program. Refunds for summer camp are subject to a withdrawal

Opportunities 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES 


Attention teachers, college students and high school students ages 16 and over. The 

City of Gaithersburg’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture is looking for site 

leaders and specialists to oversee and direct recreational activities at our various summer 

camps. Applicants should be energetic, dynamic individuals who enjoy working 

with young people. To apply for a summer leadership position you must complete a 

City of Gaithersburg employment application available online at www.gaithersburgmd. 

gov or at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, 506 S. Frederick Ave. Candidates will only 

be notified for an interview when and if positions are available. Interviews begin in 

February. Applicants must be available to work the entire 7-week camp program (June 

20 - August 5) and to attend the mandatory training sessions. For more information

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS 

Applicants must be dependable, hard-working, positive, and energetic individuals. 

Must be at least 14 years old or entering 9th grade in the fall of 2011 to apply. Only 

applicants who are at least 16 years old or have completed 10th grade will be considered 

for placement at middle school camps. 

Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Program 

CITs work directly with program participants and assist with the overall supervision 

of campers and facilitation of a variety of activities including sports, games, arts & 

crafts, and special events. CITs will not be permitted to volunteer for more than two 

sessions. 

Mainstream Recreation Volunteer (MRV) Program 

MRVs work one-on-one with a camper who has special needs. As an MRV, you 

will experience the rewarding satisfaction of helping special needs children get the 

most out of their summer camp experience. MRVs are responsible for assisting and 

including mainstream campers into daily camp games and activities. MRVs will be 

required to volunteer during all sessions for which their assigned camper is registered 

(up to 7 weeks).

• Acceptance notices and registration forms will be mailed out in the beginning 

of May. DO NOT SUBMIT PAYMENT BEFORE RECEIVING AN ACCEPTANCE 

LETTER. 

• Mandatory training dates are Saturday, June 4 or Wednesday, June 8. 

Please do not apply for a CIT or MRV position if you cannot attend one of the 

training sessions. 



YOUTH WORKERS 

TRAINING PROGRAM 

Have you ever wondered if you have 

what it takes to work with the youth in 

your community? Join our Youth Workers 

Training Course. This program is 

designed to prepare you for working with 

elementary and middle school youth in 

a recreational setting including summer 

camp and after school programs. Topics 

include discipline, safety, leadership, 

activity planning, and conflict resolution. 

The course will include five classroom 

sessions and one on-site hands-on experience. 

Students who participate in 

the Youth Workers Training Program 

are not guaranteed a position working at 

summer camps.
