corporate <strong>City</strong> limits through <strong>the</strong> Dolores<br />

Swoyer Camp Scholarship Fund. F<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

<strong>City</strong> Seeks Donations for<br />

<strong>Summer</strong> Camp Scholarship Fund<br />

Each year <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> receives hundreds<br />

<strong>of</strong> applications from families <strong>in</strong> need<br />

who want <strong>the</strong>ir children to enjoy <strong>the</strong><br />

energiz<strong>in</strong>g, educational and challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

experiences <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Gai<strong>the</strong>rsburg’s <strong>Summer</strong> Camps. Help a<br />

child have a fulfill<strong>in</strong>g summer by mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a contribution today. Donations are now<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g accepted for <strong>the</strong> Dolores Swoyer<br />

Camp Scholarship Fund. Named <strong>in</strong> lov<strong>in</strong>g<br />

memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> former Plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Commissioner and citizen activist,<br />

Dolores Swoyer, <strong>the</strong> fund provides full<br />

and partial f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance to qualify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

families. For <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 2010,<br />

127 scholarships were approved and <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> applications is expected to <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

Welcome to <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gai<strong>the</strong>rsburg’s<br />

<strong>Summer</strong> Programs 2011<br />

❖ Full day camps run from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Extended care will only be <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> afternoons from 4 – 6 p.m.<br />

Session 1 Mon., June 20 – Fri., July 1 (10 days)<br />

Session 2 Tue., July 5 – Fri., July 15 (9 days)<br />

❖ The half day YAPs programs run from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. An additional YAPs<br />

program will be <strong>of</strong>fered at Fields Road Elementary School this year.<br />

❖ Individual session dates for summer cl<strong>in</strong>ics, Creative Tot Time, and <strong>the</strong> Children’s<br />

<strong>Summer</strong> Arts Camps are listed with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> brochure.<br />

❖ Full payment for all camps will be required at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> registration unless you<br />

select <strong>the</strong> payment plan option. A complete explanation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> payment plan option<br />

can be found on page 12.<br />

❖ Each camp is designed for a particular age group. Camps are broken down by<br />

age, not by grade. Participation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> elementary school camps is based on age<br />

as <strong>of</strong> September 1, 2011. Participation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle school camps is based on<br />

age as <strong>of</strong> October 31, 2011.<br />

❖ To qualify for a <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gai<strong>the</strong>rsburg Resident Rate, <strong>the</strong> child must live with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>City</strong>’s corporate limits. All residents will be asked to provide pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> residency at<br />

<strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> registration.<br />

❖ All faxes, drop-<strong>of</strong>fs, mail-<strong>in</strong>s, and onl<strong>in</strong>e registrations will be taken beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g February<br />

2 for residents and March 2 for nonresidents.<br />

<strong>Summer</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> 2011<br />

MAINSTREAM PROGRAM<br />

Special needs children ages 6 – 14 may be eligible to participate <strong>in</strong> our <strong>Summer</strong> Camp<br />

programs. If your child has special needs, a volunteer ma<strong>in</strong>stream companion may be<br />

assigned to work one-on-one with your camper to enhance his or her experience over<br />

<strong>the</strong> summer. The objective <strong>of</strong> this program is to ma<strong>in</strong>stream <strong>the</strong> child <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> overall<br />

camp sett<strong>in</strong>g. The emphasis is not to give special or unusual attention to children,<br />

which tends to set <strong>in</strong>dividuals apart, but ra<strong>the</strong>r to create an atmosphere <strong>of</strong> friendship<br />

and acceptance. Registration and requests for companions must be made at least<br />

three weeks before <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program. For more <strong>in</strong>formation please contact<br />

About Our Camps<br />

Air Condition<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The <strong>City</strong> requests air condition<strong>in</strong>g at all sites<br />

where available. Please note, however, that<br />

most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gymnasiums <strong>in</strong> use by our programs<br />

do not have air condition<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Extreme Heat and<br />

Code-Red Ozone Alerts<br />

When code red ozone alerts and high temperature<br />

warn<strong>in</strong>gs are issued, programs<br />

will limit <strong>the</strong>ir outdoor activity and may provide<br />

alternative activities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g quiet<br />

games, water play and special events.<br />

However, activities will still be held outdoors<br />

for short periods <strong>of</strong> time.<br />

Emergency Program Cancelations<br />

Camps at MCPS schools will not be<br />

held if schools are closed due to wea<strong>the</strong>r<br />

related emergencies. For <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g delays and closures <strong>of</strong> MCPS<br />

facilities, please visit www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> operational<br />

status <strong>of</strong> camps located <strong>in</strong> <strong>City</strong><br />

facilities is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Parks, Recreation, and<br />

Culture. Please check <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong>’s website at<br />

www.gai<strong>the</strong>rsburgmd.gov for up-to-date<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation regard<strong>in</strong>g emergency program<br />

cancelations <strong>in</strong> <strong>City</strong> facilites.<br />

Refund Policy<br />

Refund requests must be made <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

least two weeks prior to <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program<br />

and are subject to a withdrawal fee <strong>of</strong><br />

$25 per session. For a complete list<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>City</strong>’s refund policy please contact Tim “Smitty”<br />

Behavior Policy<br />

Appropriate behavior by participants is<br />

expected at all times. All campers will be<br />

asked to sign a Character Agreement detail<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> department’s guidel<strong>in</strong>es on behavior<br />

and responsibility. The staff will<br />

work cooperatively with parents to keep<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>appropriate behavior<br />

and solicit <strong>the</strong>ir support to resolve conflicts<br />

and encourage positive <strong>in</strong>teraction. Participants<br />

who rema<strong>in</strong> disruptive after consultation<br />

with <strong>the</strong> parents may be dismissed<br />

from <strong>the</strong> program.<br />

Late Pickup Penalty<br />

A late fee <strong>of</strong> $3 per every 10 m<strong>in</strong>utes will<br />

be charged to parents who arrive late to pick<br />

up <strong>the</strong>ir children. Payment is due upon arrival<br />

and a child may not participate aga<strong>in</strong> until <strong>the</strong><br />

late fee has been paid.<br />

Age Appropriate Camps<br />

Each camp is designed for a particular age group. Participation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> elementary<br />

school camps is based on age as <strong>of</strong> September 1, 2011. Each all-day elementary<br />

school camp is comprised <strong>of</strong> units <strong>of</strong> approximately 20 campers. Each unit is supervised<br />

by a Senior Counselor, who is at least a high school graduate, and a Junior<br />

Counselor, who has completed at least tenth grade. Participation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle school<br />

camps is based on age as <strong>of</strong> October 31, 2011. All camp sites have a Team Leader<br />

and one or two Assistant Team Leaders. These positions are normally filled by teachers<br />

or college-age students.<br />

Camper Information<br />

The <strong>City</strong> is committed to provid<strong>in</strong>g your child with a safe and fun summer experience.<br />

As a parent, help us help your child have a successful summer by provid<strong>in</strong>g accurate<br />

and factual <strong>in</strong>formation about:<br />

- Your child’s date <strong>of</strong> birth, grade, age<br />

- Allergies and regular medications<br />

- Any special medical needs your child might have<br />

- Accurate address/phone numbers<br />

A series <strong>of</strong> required camp forms will be mailed to you about one month before <strong>the</strong><br />

program beg<strong>in</strong>s. These forms will also be available onl<strong>in</strong>e at www.gai<strong>the</strong>rsburgmd.<br />

gov/camps beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g April 1. Forms MUST BE completed and returned to <strong>the</strong> camp<br />

site on <strong>the</strong> first day your child attends camp. If your child is not currently attend<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

school <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> Maryland, you must provide a copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> child’s immunization<br />

records.<br />

Program Site Changes<br />

Due to circumstances beyond our control <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Parks, Recreation and<br />

Culture may need to move a program to an alternate site. Parents will be notified <strong>of</strong><br />

all changes as soon as possible.<br />

Field Trips<br />

Your camp registration fee covers <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> all field trips. No additional fees are<br />

required for your child to participate. Transportation for all field trips will be provided<br />

by <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gai<strong>the</strong>rsburg or Montgomery County Public School buses and/or vans.<br />

Holiday<br />

No camp will be held on Monday, July 4.<br />

All-day Elementary School Camps<br />

Ages 6 - 10 as <strong>of</strong> September 1, 2011<br />

Give your kids a summer <strong>the</strong>y will never forget! Gai<strong>the</strong>rsburg All-day Elementary<br />

Camps boast a variety <strong>of</strong> fun-filled activities that will keep your children on <strong>the</strong>ir toes.<br />

Campers will participate <strong>in</strong> an array <strong>of</strong> sports, arts and crafts, games, team build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

exercises, and special events. All participants go swimm<strong>in</strong>g multiple times a week at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Water Park at Bohrer Park. Campers also get to explore excit<strong>in</strong>g activities <strong>of</strong>f-site<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g our unique and varied field trips. Although <strong>the</strong> actual field trips have not yet<br />

been confirmed, campers generally visit Bowl America, Dom<strong>in</strong>o’s, <strong>the</strong> movies, and<br />

Greenbrier State Park. Please note that field trips vary accord<strong>in</strong>g to session and may<br />

not be scheduled every week. There are no additional fees for field trips.<br />

Extended Care<br />

The option <strong>of</strong> extended care from 4 – 6 p.m. is available at <strong>the</strong> All-day Elementary<br />

School Camps. The fee for extended care is <strong>in</strong> addition to <strong>the</strong> regular camp fee.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g extended care, your child will participate <strong>in</strong> supervised free play. Although extended<br />

care does not <strong>in</strong>clude formal programm<strong>in</strong>g, campers still have <strong>the</strong> opportunity<br />

to enjoy excit<strong>in</strong>g games, sports, and arts and crafts projects.<br />

your summer with Camp Activ8, located<br />

at Lakelands Park Middle School! Camp<br />

Activ8 is designed to engage campers <strong>in</strong><br />

fun activities that promote physical activity<br />

and healthy behavior. Campers will<br />

be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> great exercise challenges<br />

and fun <strong>in</strong>tramural sports. From archery<br />

Participants from all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle School Camps swim multiple times a week at <strong>the</strong><br />

Water Park at Bohrer Park and occasionally participate <strong>in</strong> fun activities toge<strong>the</strong>r. Each<br />

middle school camp features different <strong>of</strong>f-site field trips, although <strong>the</strong> actual field trips<br />

have yet to be confirmed. Please note that field trips vary accord<strong>in</strong>g to session and<br />

may not be scheduled every week. There are no additional fees for field trips.<br />

Extended Care<br />

The option <strong>of</strong> extended care from 4 – 6 p.m. is available at <strong>the</strong> All-day Middle School<br />

Camps. The fee for extended care is <strong>in</strong> addition to <strong>the</strong> regular camp fee. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

extended care, your child will participate <strong>in</strong> supervised free play. Although extended<br />

care does not <strong>in</strong>clude formal programm<strong>in</strong>g, campers still have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to enjoy<br />

Lights! Camera! Action! You don’t have to go to Hollywood to direct or star <strong>in</strong> your own<br />

BEGINNER<br />

AND INTERMEDIATE<br />

The Gai<strong>the</strong>rsburg Skate Park presents<br />

<strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Skate! Through a comb<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

<strong>of</strong> group and one-on-one <strong>in</strong>struction,<br />

our skate <strong>in</strong>structors create a positive<br />

environment that will help your child<br />

become a safer, better skater. Although<br />

<strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>ner and <strong>in</strong>termediate cl<strong>in</strong>ics<br />

cover different skills, <strong>the</strong> two cl<strong>in</strong>ics will<br />

occur simultaneously. Coach<strong>in</strong>g will be<br />

The beg<strong>in</strong>ner cl<strong>in</strong>ic, designed for skateboard<br />

riders who can maneuver on open<br />

flat surfaces, will emphasize tack turns,<br />

rid<strong>in</strong>g fakie, safe approach to ramps and<br />

rid<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> one’s ability. The <strong>in</strong>termediate<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ic, <strong>in</strong>tended for riders who have<br />

some experience <strong>in</strong> a skate park, will focus<br />

on dropp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>, stalls, gr<strong>in</strong>ds, ollies,<br />

kick flips and gett<strong>in</strong>g air.<br />

Participants are required to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own skateboards. Participants must also<br />

wear a skate helmet, and <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> elbow<br />

Attention teachers, college students and high school students ages 16 and over. The<br />

<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gai<strong>the</strong>rsburg’s Department <strong>of</strong> Parks, Recreation and Culture is look<strong>in</strong>g for site<br />

leaders and specialists to oversee and direct recreational activities at our various summer<br />

camps. Applicants should be energetic, dynamic <strong>in</strong>dividuals who enjoy work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with young people. To apply for a summer leadership position you must complete a<br />

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS<br />

Applicants must be dependable, hard-work<strong>in</strong>g, positive, and energetic <strong>in</strong>dividuals.<br />

Must be at least 14 years old or enter<strong>in</strong>g 9th grade <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> 2011 to apply. Only<br />

applicants who are at least 16 years old or have completed 10th grade will be considered<br />

for placement at middle school camps.<br />

Counselor-In-Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (CIT) Program<br />

CITs work directly with program participants and assist with <strong>the</strong> overall supervision<br />

<strong>of</strong> campers and facilitation <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> activities <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g sports, games, arts &<br />

crafts, and special events. CITs will not be permitted to volunteer for more than two<br />

sessions.<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>stream Recreation Volunteer (MRV) Program<br />

MRVs work one-on-one with a camper who has special needs. As an MRV, you<br />

will experience <strong>the</strong> reward<strong>in</strong>g satisfaction <strong>of</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g special needs children get <strong>the</strong><br />

most out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir summer camp experience. MRVs are responsible for assist<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong>stream campers <strong>in</strong>to daily camp games and activities. MRVs will be<br />

required to volunteer dur<strong>in</strong>g all sessions for which <strong>the</strong>ir assigned camper is registered<br />

(up to 7 weeks).<br />

CIT/MRV Application Process (Important Dates):<br />

• Applications are available at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> January at <strong>the</strong> Activity Center at<br />

Bohrer Park, 506 S. Frederick Ave.<br />

• Applications will be accepted for <strong>City</strong> residents from Jan. 3 - March 18.<br />

• Applications will be accepted for non-residents from Feb. 22 - March 18.<br />

• Candidates will be contacted for an <strong>in</strong>terview after an application is received.<br />

• Acceptance notices and registration forms will be mailed out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> May. DO NOT SUBMIT PAYMENT BEFORE RECEIVING AN ACCEPTANCE<br />

LETTER.<br />

• Mandatory tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g dates are Saturday, June 4 or Wednesday, June 8.<br />

Please do not apply for a CIT or MRV position if you cannot attend one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions.<br />

YOUTH WORKERS<br />

TRAINING PROGRAM<br />

Have you ever wondered if you have<br />

what it takes to work with <strong>the</strong> youth <strong>in</strong><br />

your community? Jo<strong>in</strong> our Youth Workers<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Course. This program is<br />

designed to prepare you for work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

elementary and middle school youth <strong>in</strong><br />

a recreational sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g summer<br />

camp and after school programs. Topics<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude discipl<strong>in</strong>e, safety, leadership,<br />

activity plann<strong>in</strong>g, and conflict resolution.<br />

The course will <strong>in</strong>clude five classroom<br />

sessions and one on-site hands-on experience.<br />

Students who participate <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Youth Workers Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Program<br />

are not guaranteed a position work<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

summer camps.<br />
