Guardia di Finanza The Guardia di Finanza is one <strong>of</strong> the five Italian police branches. It is<br />
under the authority <strong>of</strong> the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Economics and Finance. Although the Guardia di Finanza<br />
is part <strong>of</strong> the Italian army, it distinguishes itself for its special competences in the prevention<br />
and repression <strong>of</strong> financial and fiscal crimes.<br />
Istruttoria Istruttoria is the initial stage <strong>of</strong> a legal procedure in which the Court collects all <strong>of</strong><br />
the necessary elements for the next step <strong>of</strong> the proceeding. In the istruttoria phase the judge<br />
carries out investigations and acquires evidence and relevant information for the final<br />
judgement.<br />
Polizia di Stato The Polizia di Stato is one <strong>of</strong> the five Italian police branches. It is a civil police<br />
branch under the authority <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Public Security <strong>of</strong> the Ministry <strong>of</strong> the Interior.<br />
Its main function is maintaining order and ensuring public security.<br />
Polizia Penitenziaria The Polizia Penitenziaria is one <strong>of</strong> the five Italian police branches. It is<br />
a civil police branch under the authority <strong>of</strong> the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Justice. It has special competences in<br />
the provision <strong>of</strong> services and management <strong>of</strong> the people in jail or people who are living in<br />
conditions where their liberty has been restricted. The Polizia Penitenziaria does not work<br />
inside <strong>Turin</strong>’s immigration detention centre.<br />
Prefetto The Prefetto is the head <strong>of</strong> the Italian Prefettura.<br />
Prefettura The Prefettura is the local branch <strong>of</strong> the Ministry <strong>of</strong> the Interior and it represents<br />
the central government at a local level. In each <strong>of</strong> the 110 Italian provinces (Province) there is a<br />
Prefettura. Prefettura <strong>of</strong>fices manage issues such as order and public security, civil rights and<br />
immigration, local autonomies and voting matters.<br />
Questore The Questore is the head <strong>of</strong> the Italian Questura.<br />
Questura The Questura is an <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the Polizia di Stato that is under the authority <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Ministry <strong>of</strong> the Interior and is competent in the territory <strong>of</strong> the province (Provincia) where it is<br />
located. Questura’s main function consists in maintaining order and ensuring public security<br />
within the territory <strong>of</strong> the province.<br />
