<strong>Reap<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>rewards</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>expert</strong> <strong>advice</strong><br />

Royal Agricultural Society of England<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 1838, The Royal Agricultural<br />

Society of England (<strong>RASE</strong>) has played<br />

a lead<strong>in</strong>g role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development<br />

of British agriculture and a vibrant<br />

rural economy through <strong>the</strong> uptake of good science, <strong>the</strong> promotion of best<br />

practise and a co-ord<strong>in</strong>ated, impartial approach to wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g rural issues.<br />

Today <strong>RASE</strong>’s work <strong>in</strong>cludes support for bus<strong>in</strong>ess and social welfare <strong>in</strong> rural<br />

communities, education and <strong>the</strong> Society’s famous shows and events.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce it was set up <strong>in</strong> 1840, <strong>the</strong> Society has aimed to<br />

support farm<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> rural <strong>in</strong>dustries by spread<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong> best <strong>in</strong> research, development<br />

and practise. Today, <strong>RASE</strong> still works to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> best<br />

of British agriculture to <strong>the</strong> attention of its members<br />

and <strong>the</strong> wider rural <strong>in</strong>dustries through shows, events,<br />

conferences and awards.<br />

Major relocation project<br />

In May 2009, <strong>the</strong> <strong>RASE</strong> moved offices to a new location<br />

on <strong>the</strong> site. Stewart Page, <strong>RASE</strong>’s Assistant Director<br />

ICTcontacted <strong>Softcat</strong> to discuss a restructur<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

network <strong>in</strong>frastructure. This conversation led to choos<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Softcat</strong> for <strong>the</strong> specification, supply and <strong>in</strong>stallation of<br />

both <strong>the</strong> VMware and NetApp solutions.<br />

<strong>Softcat</strong> worked with <strong>the</strong> IT team and <strong>the</strong> VoIP vendor<br />

to design a robust and resilient solution for <strong>the</strong> new<br />

location, which <strong>in</strong>cluded a number of fibre l<strong>in</strong>ks to<br />

remote build<strong>in</strong>gs on <strong>the</strong> site.<br />

“We had known <strong>Softcat</strong> for years, ever s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y<br />

helped us rationalise and manage our Microsoft<br />

licens<strong>in</strong>g policies,” commented Stewart. “<strong>Softcat</strong> worked<br />

with us to implement a new licens<strong>in</strong>g model that ensured<br />

<strong>RASE</strong> adhered to Microsoft’s licens<strong>in</strong>g programme,<br />

sav<strong>in</strong>g us a large amount of money <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process.”<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g been impressed with <strong>the</strong> <strong>advice</strong> and support<br />

delivered by <strong>Softcat</strong>, Stewart had no hesitation <strong>in</strong><br />

partner<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>m to undertake <strong>the</strong> IT relocation.<br />

“<strong>Softcat</strong> was our natural first port of call,” cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

Stewart, “but this project was go<strong>in</strong>g to really test<br />

<strong>Softcat</strong>’s technicians as we wanted to move out of our<br />

old offices on a Friday afternoon and be up and runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> our new centre <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g Monday morn<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

A s<strong>in</strong>gle po<strong>in</strong>t of contact<br />

Matters were compounded by <strong>the</strong> state of <strong>RASE</strong>’s<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g servers, some of which were over 9 years<br />

old. Recognis<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>se might not withstand <strong>the</strong><br />

elocation and may not be suitable for reconfigur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new <strong>in</strong>frastructure, Stewart began to evaluate<br />

alternative technologies, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g virtualisation. The<br />

Society was concerned about bus<strong>in</strong>ess cont<strong>in</strong>uity and<br />

disaster recovery and <strong>the</strong> relocation project gave <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>the</strong> opportunity to implement a fully resilient solution.<br />

“We started look<strong>in</strong>g at various solutions <strong>from</strong> a range of<br />

suppliers,” added Stewart. “At <strong>the</strong> same time we were<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g to replace our redundant phone system with<br />

VoIP, but when we mentioned our virtualisation plans<br />

to <strong>Softcat</strong>, we realised that <strong>in</strong> <strong>Softcat</strong> we had a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

partner that could design our overall solution, work with<br />

various suppliers, act as our s<strong>in</strong>gle po<strong>in</strong>t of contact and<br />

oversee <strong>the</strong> entire project.”<br />

<strong>Softcat</strong> evaluated <strong>RASE</strong>’s virtualisation, bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>uity and disaster recovery objectives and<br />

recommended a solution based around NetApp,<br />

VMware and HP Servers. Follow<strong>in</strong>g evaluations and<br />

technical discussions, Stewart decided to accept <strong>the</strong><br />

proposal and engaged <strong>Softcat</strong> to design, develop<br />

and implement <strong>the</strong> overall solution. “The more we<br />

worked alongside <strong>Softcat</strong>, <strong>the</strong> more we appreciated<br />

<strong>the</strong> immense technical knowledge and experience <strong>the</strong>y<br />

could br<strong>in</strong>g to bear on this project,” said Stewart. “They<br />

even became <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> VoIP aspects, work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

suppliers and ensur<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> new <strong>in</strong>frastructure would<br />

be able to handle all of our voice and data traffic.”<br />

Server implementation<br />

<strong>in</strong> under 15 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

With bus<strong>in</strong>ess cont<strong>in</strong>uity and disaster recovery high on<br />

<strong>the</strong> list of objectives, <strong>Softcat</strong>’s disaster recovery specialists<br />

had proposed a solution based around <strong>the</strong> NetApp SAN<br />

which would elim<strong>in</strong>ate s<strong>in</strong>gle po<strong>in</strong>ts of failure across<br />

<strong>the</strong> SAN and allow synchronous replication with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

SAN over a data l<strong>in</strong>k between two of <strong>RASE</strong>’s build<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

ensur<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess cont<strong>in</strong>uity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event of a disaster.<br />

“This solution gave us greater resilience <strong>in</strong> our networks<br />

and delivered an elegant and low cost cont<strong>in</strong>uity and<br />

recovery solution,” added Stewart.<br />

Now live, <strong>RASE</strong>’s new IT <strong>in</strong>frastructure is already<br />

deliver<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> services and capabilities that <strong>the</strong> Society<br />

required. The relocation went smoothly with all networks<br />

and systems up and runn<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> first Monday morn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

thanks to <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t efforts of <strong>RASE</strong>’s IT team and <strong>Softcat</strong>’s<br />

technicians. The move to virtualisation means that Stewart<br />

now spends far less time manag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Society’s servers;<br />

server ma<strong>in</strong>tenance is now a relatively simple and quick<br />

operation, servers can be implemented <strong>in</strong> under 15<br />

m<strong>in</strong>utes and Stewart is particularly impressed with <strong>the</strong> time<br />

it now takes for server configuration.<br />

“It’s amaz<strong>in</strong>g,” he commented. “We have flexible,<br />

stable and resilient storage and <strong>the</strong> peace of m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

solution br<strong>in</strong>gs.”<br />

“<strong>Softcat</strong> has been first class. They obviously work very<br />

closely with <strong>the</strong>ir suppliers and have provided high<br />

levels of support and knowledge transfer to <strong>RASE</strong>. We<br />

<strong>trust</strong> <strong>Softcat</strong> and we <strong>trust</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir solution.”<br />
