5. Cash and Cash Equivalents<br />

Cash and cash equivalents as of December 31 comprise the following:<br />

The obligatory reserve with the CBR represents the amount deposited by the <strong>Company</strong>’s subsidiary<br />

bank, VBRR with the CBR for securing the current operating activity of the bank. Credit institutions<br />

are required to maintain a non-interest earning cash deposit (obligatory reserve) with the CBR, which<br />

amount depends on the level of funds raised by the credit institution and this amount has certain<br />

restrictions for use.<br />

Cash accounts denominated in foreign currencies represent primarily cash in US dollars.<br />

Deposits represent primarily bank deposits denominated in RUB that may be readily convertible into<br />

cash and may be withdrawn by the <strong>Company</strong> at any time without prior notice or penalties.<br />

As part of its cash management and credit risk function, the <strong>Company</strong> regularly evaluates the<br />

creditworthiness of financial and banking institutions where it deposits cash. Banking relationships are<br />

primarily with Russian subsidiaries of international banking institutions and certain large Russian<br />

banks.<br />
