(SAFE/SANE)<br />

This training course meets the International Association of Forensic Nurses<br />

National Standards and Guidelines for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.<br />

This 5 day training course will focus on the fundamental forensic examination techniques for<br />

adolescent and adult victims of sexual assault. This course is designed to provide the inexperience<br />

examiner with the skills, knowledge and attitude to conduct a basic evidentiary examination.<br />

Following completion of this course it is recommend that each nurse go through a preceptorship to<br />

build upon the skill learned during this course.<br />

EXAMINER TRAINING COURSE<br />

About the Course<br />

This 5-day intensive training course will provide<br />

licensed healthcare professionals who are interested<br />

in practicing as Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners<br />

(SAFE/SANE) the training to enhance or establish the<br />

knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to perform<br />

a basic sexual assault examination for<br />

adolescent/adult victims of acute sexual assault.<br />

This course meets the educational requirements of<br />

the International Association of Forensic Nurses<br />

(IAFN). Each participant will receive an in-depth<br />

orientation to physical, emotional and social<br />

reactions to sexual assault. There will be an<br />

opportunity for each participant to perform a<br />

standard evidentiary physical evaluation and<br />

examination, as well as the opportunity to collect<br />

forensic evidence with the use of anatomical models.<br />

A preceptor ship following this training course is<br />

recommended.<br />

Course Objectives<br />

• Describe the members of a sexual assault response<br />

team.<br />

• Describe the 3 components of the role of the forensic<br />

examiner.<br />

• State two myths about male sexual assault.<br />

• List three of the most common drugs used in<br />

drug- facilitated sexual assault.<br />

• State the role of law enforcement.<br />

• Understand the definition of sexual assault per penal<br />

code.<br />

• Verbalize 4 tips for health care providers to utilize<br />

when asked to testify in court.<br />

• Demonstrate obtaining and documenting a history<br />

based on the 923 form.<br />

• Demonstrate documentation of injury using the 923<br />

form.<br />

• Verbalize and demonstrate genital anatomy in practice<br />

case reviews.<br />

• Describe the difference between the suspect and<br />

victim examination.<br />

• State the CDC recommendation for antibiotic treatment<br />

for sexual assault.<br />

• Demonstrate correct clothing collection and bagging<br />

for evidence kit.<br />

• Demonstrate insertion of speculum and anoscope in<br />

model skill lab.<br />

• List three myths of sexual assault.<br />
