B Level Welding, A Level Welding and Welding<br />

Upgrade are continuous intake. Please contact<br />

Program Objectives<br />

In accordance with the BC Provincial Welding<br />

Trades Advisory Committee in cooperation with<br />

the Ministry of Advanced Edu<strong>ca</strong>tion, students<br />

who successfully complete all welding modules are<br />

trained to a province-wide competency level. On<br />

completion of each level of training, graduates will<br />

possess the skills necessary to function as a safe<br />

and competent Welder at that level.<br />

In the Province of British Columbia welding<br />

training and accreditation is provided in the<br />

following format:<br />

• C Level Welder- training in several processes<br />

and procedures to a basic competency level<br />

in welding.<br />

• CWB: unclassified ñ Welders tested and<br />

licensed by a Canadian Welding Bureau<br />

(CWB) member shop or union.<br />

• B Level: intermediate training in several<br />

processes and procedures.<br />

• Pressure Tickets: after becoming a registered<br />

B Level Welder, Ameri<strong>ca</strong>n Society of<br />

Mechani<strong>ca</strong>l Engineers (ASME) procedure<br />

Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code procedures<br />

may be obtained.<br />

• A Level: advanced training in several<br />

processes and procedures.<br />

• Night School: all C, B, and A levels ñ<br />

upgrade ñ hobby ñ backyard mechanics.<br />

Procedure and Process<br />

Qualifi<strong>ca</strong>tion (Tickets)<br />

Various organizations [Candian Welding Bureau<br />

(CWB), Mechani<strong>ca</strong>l Contractors Association<br />

(MCA), Ameri<strong>ca</strong>n Society of Mechani<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

Engineers (ASME), Boiler and Pressure Vessel<br />

Safety Branch] have registered procedures to<br />

which welders <strong>ca</strong>n/may qualify.<br />

Various companies require their welders to qualify<br />

to various registered procedures.<br />

Companies or individuals interested in arranging<br />

training or testing are urged to contact this<br />

department to explore time frame and cost factors.<br />

Career Potential<br />

Graduates of each level of training have a variety of<br />

employment opportunities. Nearly every industry,<br />

union agency and manufacturing facility employs<br />

welders, not only in BC and Canada, but worldwide<br />

(for those who love to travel). For students interested<br />

in obtaining the A Level and several pressure tickets,<br />

the top end of the salary s<strong>ca</strong>le <strong>ca</strong>n exceed $100,000<br />

per year. Most medium to large companies use a<br />

welding process in one or more departments. This<br />

training provides the means of entry into management,<br />

techni<strong>ca</strong>l services, engineering, fabri<strong>ca</strong>tion,<br />

machining, mechani<strong>ca</strong>l, maintenance, inspection<br />

and quality control and more.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

C Level Welder-Intro to Steel Fab<br />

The Level C Welder-Intro to Steel Fab program is<br />

nine months of training which provides you with<br />

theory and practi<strong>ca</strong>l skills preparing you for the<br />

growing workforce. Through one-on-one shop<br />

time, theory and practi<strong>ca</strong>l hands-on training, you<br />

will gain entry level knowledge of Welder-Fab job<br />

requirements.<br />

• graduation from a British Columbia Senior<br />

Secondary School or equivalent,* with<br />

• Principles of Math 10, Appli<strong>ca</strong>tions of Math<br />

11 or Essentials of Math 12 or equivalent<br />

with a ‘C’ or better, and<br />

• English 10 with a ‘C’ or better.<br />

• good hand/eye coordination.<br />

• all appli<strong>ca</strong>nts are required to complete a<br />

computerized placement test in reading,<br />

writing and mathematics once they have<br />

submitted their appli<strong>ca</strong>tion.<br />

*Consideration will be given to mature individuals<br />

(19 years or older) who are not Senior Secondary<br />

School graduates provided they have completed or<br />

are in the process of obtaining Principles of Math<br />

10 or equivalent with a ‘C’ grade or better.(This<br />

course must be completed prior to the program<br />

entry date.)<br />

Students must supply some hand tools, safety<br />

boots, leatherwear and purchase module texts at<br />

a cost of approximately $600. A refundable tool<br />

deposit of $100 will be required at the start of the<br />

program.<br />

B Level Welding<br />

Approximately four months training plus eight<br />

months work experience are required for your B<br />

Level training. Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers a series of<br />

competency-based courses on a continuous basis<br />

from September to May. Due to the wide scope<br />

of these courses, an interview with the appropriate<br />

instructor BEFORE registering is strongly<br />

recommended.<br />

• successful completion of C Level Welding<br />

program including C Level Endorsement<br />

Stamp.<br />

• minimum of five months work experience as<br />

a Welder.<br />

• students must supply some hand tools and<br />

purchase B Level module texts at a cost of<br />

approximately $100.<br />

• an interview with the instructor prior to<br />

registering is strongly recommended.<br />

Students are required to have C Level module<br />

texts in addition to above.<br />

A Level Welding<br />

Approximately two months training plus ten<br />

months work experience are required for your A<br />

Level training. Selk<strong>irk</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers a series of<br />

competency-based courses on a continuous basis<br />

from September to May. Due to the wide scope<br />

of these courses, an interview with the appropriate<br />

instructor BEFORE registering is strongly<br />

recommended.<br />

• successful completion of B Level Welding<br />
