Scotland Wins the 2008 Championship
Team Scotland (Wallace Booth, Gavin Dear, captain George Cranford and Callum Macaulay, left to right) poses for their official photograph.
In blustery final-day conditions, Scotland claimed its
first Eisenhower Trophy with a nine-stroke victory
in the 2008 World Amateur Team Championship in
Adelaide, Australia.
“We set out to try to win but to go out and do it is
unbelievable,” said Scotsman Callum Macaulay, who
shot 1-under-par 72 in the final round on the Royal
Adelaide Golf Club.
Combining Macaulay’s score with a 2-over-par 75 from
Gavin Dear, Scotland finished with a 20-under-par total
of 560 for 72 holes, the second-best score since threeplayer
teams were instituted in 2002.
Beginning the final round with a four-stroke lead over
the USA, the Scots started strongly with Macaulay leading
the way by birdieing five holes in his first nine.
That early pace moved the Scots further ahead of the
contending Americans and Swedes, who finished second
and third at 569 and 574, respectively. Scotland’s
final round 1-over-par 147 was five strokes better than
the USA and six better than Sweden.
“We got off to a slow start and made some bogeys earlier
and then we were really in a hole,” USA captain
Walter Driver said. “There were very testing conditions
with the wind blowing hard. Obviously, the Scots loved
it. They played well.”
Dear agreed that the wind, which increased as the day
progressed, was in the Scots’ favor.
“It helps because we feel we are all good wind players,”
Dear said. “It was good to have it blowing a mere gale
because we can cope with the conditions and we know
that par is a good score.”
Even with a large lead, Scottish captain George
Crawford did not feel secure with victory until the 17th
hole.
“I somewhat felt we were in a strong position after 14,”
Crawford said. “But, ultimately it wasn’t sure until we
played the 17th, where Gavin chipped in for an eagle
and Callum made birdie.”
World Am
World Amateur Team
The weight of the accomplishment was not lost on
Crawford either.
“It’s history in the making for a small nation as the
home of golf,” Crawford said. “The way golf has developed
on the continent means it’s much more difficult
to compete at this level. It’s a historic occasion. It’s tremendous.”
The Scots were playing for just the fourth time under
their own flag with a best finish of tied for sixth in
2006. Four times – 1964, 1976, 1988 and 1998 – individual
Scots have been part of gold-medal-winning Great
Britain and Ireland teams. From 1958 to 2000, the Scots
were part of that team. In 2002, when the championship
moved from four-player to three-player teams, Scotland
made its debut.
With the victory, Scotland closed an historic circle. In
the first championship in 1958 at the Old Course in
St. Andrews, Scotland, the Australians won. Fifty years
later, the Scots gained the trophy in Australia.
The USA was vying for its 14th Eisenhower Trophy and
had won the championship three of the last four times.
“It’s a little bit disappointing,” Driver said. “Silver is not
bad when we had a chance to win.”
Finishing the top 10 were France and Italy tied for
fourth; Australia in sixth, defending champion
Netherlands and Spain tied for seventh and Argentina
and Canada tied for ninth.
In the World Amateur, the team’s two best individual
scores count.
The winning team receives custody of the Eisenhower
Trophy for the ensuing two years and the players receive
gold medals.
Although there is no individual recognition, Rickie
Fowler of the USA was the low scorer at 10-under-par
280.
In the final round, the top half of the field played at
Royal Adelaide Golf Club and the bottom scoring half
played at The Grange Golf Club’s West course.
Championship History
In January 1958, the USGA Executive Committee
approved in principal a plan for such a championship.
That March, a group of USGA representatives, including
USGA President John D. Ames, met with officials
of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club to discuss the plan.
St. Andrews was proposed as the scene of the first
championship later that year. The R & A joined in
implementing the idea. In May, representatives of the
national amateur golf associations of 35 countries
attending a planning conference in Washington, D.C.,
formed the World Amateur Golf Council. The council
had 32 member organizations and planned the first
championship.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower received the delegates
in the Rose Garden of the White House and consented
to the naming of the championship prize as The
Eisenhower Trophy. Eisenhower endorsed the concept,
saying, “Both officially and personally I am interested
in the plan advanced by the USGA for an amateur
team golf championship among nations. I visualize it,
as you do, as a potent force for establishing goodwill
and friendship between yet another segment of the
populations of nations.”
The championship received yet another stroke of good
luck when Bob Jones agreed to be captain of the first
USA team. Jones had taken the first leg of his 1930
Grand Slam at St. Andrews by winning the British
Amateur, but 22 years had passed since he had visited
there last.
Callum Macauley of Scotland was a key contributor
to the team’s gold-medal performance at the 2008 championship.
The idea of a World Amateur Team Championship and
the World Amateur Golf Council grew out of a suggestion
that the USGA received to sponsor a team match
between the USA and Japan in 1957.
The USGA, which received many such invitations from
other countries, simply could not accept the Japanese
proposal.
The USGA instead suggested a team competition that
would bring together the best players of all countries,
accommodating all possible interests. Even those
American advocates of adding golf to the Olympics
seemed satisfied with the World Team Championship
idea.
The first championship was played over the Old
Course of St. Andrews in October 1958, and 115 players
representing 29 countries played. Australia won in a
playoff with the USA. The lowest individual scores for
the 72 holes were 301s by William Hyndman III of the
USA, Bruce Devlin of Australia, and Reid Jack of Great
Britain & Ireland.
Jack Nicklaus, who represented the USA in 1960 at
Merion Golf Club (East Course), in Ardmore, Pa., holds
the 72-hole individual scoring record of 269, although
individual scores are not recognized.
While the USA has prevailed in 13 of the 26 competitions,
Great Britain & Ireland has won four times, while
countries as diverse in the world of golf as Australia,
Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Netherlands, Scotland,
and Sweden have each captured the Eisenhower Trophy.
The World Amateur Team Championship has now been
conducted in 24 different nations.
The organization’s name changed to the International
Golf Federation in 2003.
