Tromans Associates This workshop introduces participants to the world of additive manufacturing technologies with discussions on the most widely used technologies and how they are applied. Fundamentals of 3D Scanning and 3D Modeling Giles Gaskell, Wenzel America Ltd. This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to 3D scanning technologies, software and processes, highlighting the differences among data capture technologies, followed by a handson demonstration of some of the most popular scanning devices. Metal Parts Using Additive Technologies Frank Medina, University of Texas at El Paso This workshop provides an overview of additive processes used for creating metal parts. Methods for metal part fabrication range from casting metal parts from rapid-prototyped patterns to direct metal fabrication using lasers, electron beams or ultrasonic energy. Fundamentals of RTV Mold-making and Polyurethane Casting Bill Molitor, Innovative Polymers Myra Bumgardner, Silicones Inc. Terry McGinnis, BJB Enterprises This workshop will create an opportunity for model shops, prototypers, designers and others to learn about the use of silicones for creating molds and polyurethanes for creating cast parts in silicone tooling. The panel will also discuss advantages of using RTV tooling and polyurethane casting to expand your manufacturing capabilities beyond prototypes into rapid short-run and medium-run production. Bally Design Located in the heart of Pittsburgh’s cultural district, Bally specializes in product design and development, engineering, branding, corporate identity, and environmental design. This event provides an opportunity to participate in a creative exercise on product design and network while enjoying a “taste of Pittsburgh.” See the tools and techniques that drive innovation and creativity in product design for industrial, medical and consumer products—all by design. Thursday, June 13 8:30 am–12:30 pm Select Tour #1 -OR- Tour #2 Cost: $80 (registration required) Transportation provided Tour #1: ExOne & threeRivers 3D Visitors will view ExOne’s 3D metal printing process from start to finish as well as be one of the first to tour their cutting-edge machine build lab. Get up-close and examine a large variety of metal parts and printed sand molds representing the spectrum of industrial additive manufacturing. 26 sme.org/rapid

Visitors will see the manufacturing of 3D scanners. threeRivers 3D will detail their local sourcing strategy and the benefits of a close-to-the-vest supply chain. Visitors will follow the mechanical assembly of the scanner core, burn-in and final assembly/ validation. Also provided will be a demonstration of 3D scanning in general. Tour #2: Human Engineering Research Laboratories at VA Pittsburgh & TechShop Pittsburgh TechShop is a community-based workshop and prototyping studio on a mission to democratize access to the tools of innovation. Their seventh and newest location, TechShop Pittsburgh, will offer the Pittsburgh maker community more than 16,000 square feet of workshops equipped with world-class tools and equipment, computers loaded with design software featuring the Autodesk Design Suite, hundreds of classes each month, and the support and camaraderie of a community of like-minded makers. HERL’s mission is to continuously improve the mobility and function of people with disabilities through advanced engineering in clinical research and medical rehabilitation. Visitors will see projects under design with final parts made with additive manufacturing and a full operating laboratory that includes operating equipment. Thursday Tour Note: Tour participants may be dropped off at the conclusion of the tour at either the airport or the Omni Hotel. Tour #1 will go to the airport first, and then return to the hotel; Tour #2 will go to the hotel first, then to the airport. The tour buses can accommodate luggage.
