Flooding: Drainage & Watercourses Thurgarton Parish Council 19 properties and the church were flooded in June and July 2007. Failing field drains and neglected ditches. Blocked highways drains. Raw sewage in homes causing illness. Rainfall exceeded capacity of the Beck Thorsby Estates Newark and Sherwood DC NCC Highways Dept Severn Trent Environment Agency Only NSDC and NCC Highways have responded. . Weston Parish Council Flooding not widespread, though several properties were affected. Blocked ditches, dykes and drains Partnership working. aggravated the problem as surface water was unable to escape. Pipes were too small in diameter for the flow of water. Post flood response was very good. Sandbags and a skip were provided. Internal drainage board addressed problems with ditches and dykes ensuring they were clear and free flowing. 30

Recommendation 2: The Environment Agency should progressively take on a national overview of all flood risk, including surface water and groundwater flood risk, with immediate effect. Recommendation 3: The Met Office should continue to improve its forecasting and predicting methods to a level which meets the needs of emergency responders. Recommendation 4: The Environment Agency should further develop its tools and techniques for predicting and modelling river flooding, taking account of extreme and multiple events and depths and velocities of water. Recommendation 5: The Environment Agency should work with partners to urgently take forward work to develop tools and techniques to model surface water flooding. Recommendation 6: 31
