Connectors
Navy Approved Commercial (ST) Connectors and Adapters
Not Qualified to MIL-C-83522/16 Specifications
While the Navy specifies that the QPL'd M83522 ST Connector should be used
on all fiber optic cable plant backbones and cable drops used for tactical applications,
there are some situations where the Navy has approved the use of the
following commercial connectors (and adapters). See chart below for details.
Description
Cable Size
Multimode Commercial ST Connector 0200-3000
(Navy approved COTS, non-locking boot) or 0200-3010
Singlemode Commercial ST Connector 0200-3020
(Navy approved COTS, non-locking boot)
Multimode Commercial ST Coupling Adapter 0200-3040
(Navy approved COTS) or 3050
Singlemode Commercial ST Coupling Adapter 0200-3060
(Navy approved COTS) or 0200-3070
ST to ST Coupling Adapters
(Multimode & Singlemode)
QPL vs. Navy Approved
Commercial ST Connectors
•QPL ST connectors are to be used on all
fiber optic cable plant backbones.
•QPL ST connectors are to be used on all
cable drops for tactical applications.
•Navy approved COTS, Commercial ST
connectors may be used on cable drops for
non-tactical applications.
•Navy approved COTS, Commercial ST
connectors should not be mated to the QPL
ST connectors with the stiffer spring constant
(such as at the shock mounted rack
patch panel).
•Navy approved COTS, Commercial ST
connectors may be used to mate with
adapters on commercial interface cards
which includes Network Interface Cards
(NIC cards).
•ST connectors are not to be used on the
cabinet exterior and for other external connections
on tactical applications. MIL-PRF-
28876 multiple termini connectors are to be
used for this application.
•Since the QPL ST has been known to break
off or shear the adapter tabs (pins) of plastic
or softer metal ST adapters they should
not be used on these types of commercial
interfaces. The Navy approved COTS,
commercial ST should be used instead.
•Navy approved COTS, Commercial ST
connectors may be used to mate with
equipment and patch panels mounted to
the interior of internal or external "shock
isolated" cabinets for tactical applications.
•Navy approved COTS, Commercial ST
connectors are not to be used to mate with
equipment and patch panels mounted to
the interior of a non-shock isolated cabinet
for tactical applications.
COTS (SC) Connectors and SC to ST Adapter
Commercial Off-The-Shelf SC Connectors
and Hybrid Adapter
The EIA/TIA (Electronics Industry Association & Telecommunications
Industry Association) have accepted the SC (Subscriber Connector) as the
standard for the telecommunications industry. Consequently, electronics that
have the SC interface can be found aboard naval vessels. The SC (TIA-604-3)
connectors below have been chosen by the Navy as the approved connectors to
connect to this commercial adapter interface.
