dent’s arrival. Some M.Sc. programs offer a preparatory
semester so students can review the necessary
subject matter.
Applicants must submit transcripts and if they
have been employed since graduation, description
of their professional experience. Courses are run
in small groups and the students work individually
under the direction of a personal adviser. They
have access to laboratories, research facilities and
computers.
An M.Sc. program is 4 semesters or 2 years in
duration and contains of 26 hours of instruction
per week and 5 examinations per semester. A
degree is granted on successful completion of a
thesis and final exam.
Ph.D. Programs
Applicants for a Ph.D. program must hold an
M.Sc. degree, possess an overall understanding
of and high competence in their field of knowledge
and be familiar with cognitive disciplines
and capable in using research techniques. They
should also demonstrate a sense of responsibility
for advancement of scientific knowledge, publication
in scientific journals and international acceptance
of their work.
Ph.D. candidates carry out their studies and
research on an individual basis under the guidance
of a professor or senior member of a specific
faculty’s research staff. Work toward a Ph.D. degree
usually takes 3 years, The degree is granted
once the candidate passes the required examinations
and his/her thesis is accepted.

In addition to full-time degree programs in all eight
faculties, the Budapest University of Technology
and Economics offer several others courses:
Pre-Engineering Course
This program prepares students for the first year
studies in B.Sc. programs.
The Pre-Engineering Course provides two semesters
of intensive instruction in Mathematics
(including Algebra, Geometry, Computing and
Engineering Drawing), Physics (including Mechanics,
Electricity, Thermodynamics, Optics), and
English language as well as conceptual approach
to engineering. It is also possible to join the second
semester only.
Students who achieve at least mark 4 out of 5
at the end of these cons semester can begin their
first year engineering studies in the B.Sc. degree
program without taking the placement test.
One-Semester and Study Abroad Programs
BME has a tradition of organizing one-semester
credit courses or special interest courses. The
University also offers Study Abroad opportunities
for students of different universities who can
choose subjects from the University curriculum,
satisfying the credit transfer requirements of their
home university.
Introduction Program
It offers orientation for new students during the
week of enrolment including introductory lectures
on BME and Hungary, registration, residence permit,
medical check-up, sight-seeing on the campus
and in the city and the reception of the Rector in
honor of the new international students.
