has been part of the World Heritage s<strong>in</strong>ce 1987<br />
based on the Declaration of UNESCO. Further parts<br />
of the campus were built after World War I. and II.,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g academic build<strong>in</strong>gs, nuclear tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g reactor,<br />
student hostels, cafeterias and a new section of<br />
the campus is under construction right now.<br />
Accreditation<br />
As a state university Budapest University of Technology<br />
and Economics functions under the auspices<br />
of the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Education and Culture. The<br />
B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs of the University taught<br />
<strong>in</strong> Hungarian and English have been reaccredited<br />
by the Hungarian Accreditation Board <strong>in</strong> 2004.<br />
<strong>International</strong> Recognition<br />
of the <strong>Degree</strong>s<br />
In professions – and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g belongs to this<br />
circle – where the conditions of education <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong><br />
are identical with those <strong>in</strong> the European Union,<br />
and these have already been recognized, the<br />
member states of the European Union are<br />
obliged to accept the diplomas issued <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong>,<br />
<strong>in</strong>dependent of the language of tuition. The<br />
EU Directives list a few professions which receive<br />
not only automatic recognition but license right,<br />
too. Architecture is one of those specialities.<br />
The B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees of the University<br />
are fully recognized and accepted <strong>in</strong> overseas<br />
countries, as well, and hundreds of the graduates<br />
could cont<strong>in</strong>ue their studies on graduate, postgraduate<br />
level, or got jobs at national, mult<strong>in</strong>ational<br />
companies and governmental authorities,<br />
universities, research centers.<br />
Full-Time <strong>Programs</strong> <strong>in</strong> English<br />
The Budapest University of Technology and Economics<br />
has eight faculties:<br />
• Architecture<br />
• Chemical and Bio-Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• Economic and Social Sciences<br />
• Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Informatics<br />
• Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• Natural Sciences<br />
• Transportation Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>Degree</strong> programs, taught <strong>in</strong> English <strong>in</strong> all eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
faculties, lead to the<br />
• B.Sc. – a 4-year program<br />
• M.Sc. – a 2-year program<br />
• Ph.D. – usually 3 years of <strong>in</strong>dividualized studies<br />
and research<br />
B.Sc. Program<br />
Courses for the B.Sc. degree are four years <strong>in</strong> duration.<br />
These eight semesters provide natural<br />
sciences’ fundamentals needed for eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
such as mathematics, physics, mechanics and<br />
chemistry, plus a thorough knowledge <strong>in</strong> design <strong>in</strong><br />
the field of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. A wide choice of optional<br />
subjects if offered so that the students can pursue<br />
their own <strong>in</strong>terest and goals. Experimental work<br />
<strong>in</strong> well equipped laboratories is emphasized and<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the use of computers is an <strong>in</strong>tegral part<br />
of the course.<br />
The hours of <strong>in</strong>struction range from 26 to 32<br />
hours per week. Some variations occurs from faculty<br />
to faculty and also dur<strong>in</strong>g the last semester<br />
when students work on their diploma project.<br />
Students take 5 or 6 exams each semester. On<br />
successful completion of the seven or eight semesters<br />
(depend<strong>in</strong>g on the faculty curriculum), f<strong>in</strong>al<br />
exams and the diploma project, a student will be<br />
granted a B.Sc. degree which certifies its holder’s<br />
ability to engage <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g production work.<br />
M.Sc. Program<br />
Students who already have a B.Sc. degree can<br />
pursue an M.Sc. degree <strong>in</strong> the same field of study<br />
at the Budapest University of Technology and<br />
Economics. Acceptance and placement are based<br />
on a student’s academic credentials and current<br />
level of knowledge which is assessed on the stu-
