General Information<br />

Brief History<br />

The Budapest University of Technology and Economics<br />

can trace its evolution through several<br />

academic <strong>in</strong>stitutions, dat<strong>in</strong>g back to 1782 when<br />

Emperor Joseph II established the Institutum<br />

Geometricum as part of the Faculty of Liberal Arts<br />

at the University of Buda. The Institutum was the<br />

first higher educational <strong>in</strong>stitution <strong>in</strong> Europe to<br />

award eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g degrees to students of land<br />

survey<strong>in</strong>g, river control and road construction.<br />

The name and organizational structure of the<br />

University has changed several times throughout<br />

the past of more than 200 years. In 1850 the Institutum<br />

Geometricum merges with the Joseph College<br />

of Technology and <strong>in</strong> 1856 the merged <strong>in</strong>stitution<br />

become the Royal Joseph Polytechnic. In<br />

1860 Hungarian replaces Lat<strong>in</strong> as the language of<br />

<strong>in</strong>struction. Two year later Royal Joseph Polytechnic<br />

becomes the Royal Joseph University. S<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

1872 this University has the right to issue eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

diplomas after five years of studies. It is<br />

among the first <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> Europe to tra<strong>in</strong><br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eers on university level. In 1949 the name<br />

Technical University of Budapest becomes official.<br />

In 1984 <strong>in</strong>struction is offered <strong>in</strong> English as<br />

well as Hungarian. In 1994 the credit system is<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced. The University applies the credit assignment<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to the European Credit Transfer<br />

System (ECTS) <strong>in</strong> its accredited academic programs.<br />

In 2000 the official name changes to Budapest<br />

University of Technology and Economics.<br />

Several Nobel Laureates have been associated<br />

with the Budapest University of Technology and<br />

Economics: Dennis Gábor (Physics), George Hevessy<br />

(Chemistry), Eugene Wigner (Physics), György<br />

Oláh (Chemistry) and János Harsányi (Economics).<br />

Further notable personalities have also studied or<br />

taught at the University: John von Neumann, <strong>in</strong>ventor<br />

of the computer, Edward Teller, nuclear physicist,<br />

Leó Szilárd, known for his work on nuclear<br />

cha<strong>in</strong> reactions, Marcel Breuer, architect, Ernő Rubik,<br />

<strong>in</strong>ventor of the famous cube, Donát Bánki, co<strong>in</strong>ventor<br />

of the carburetor, Károly Cipernowszky,<br />

one of the <strong>in</strong>ventors of the transformer, Dénes Mihály,<br />

one of the <strong>in</strong>ventors of television.<br />

For the time be<strong>in</strong>g more than 110 departments<br />

and <strong>in</strong>stitutions operate with<strong>in</strong> the structure of<br />

eight faculties. About 1100 lecturers, 400 researchers<br />

and other degree holders and numerous<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited lecturers and practic<strong>in</strong>g expert specialists<br />

participate <strong>in</strong> education and research at the Budapest<br />

University of Technology and Economics.<br />

Approximately 800 of the University’s 14,000 students<br />

are from 50 countries abroad. The University<br />

offers eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g programs <strong>in</strong> Hungarian, English,<br />

German and French. The Budapest University<br />

of Technology and Economics issues about 70% of<br />

<strong>Hungary</strong>’s eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g degrees.<br />

Research at the University is highly encouraged<br />

and is present on all levels from the B.Sc.<br />

trough to the doctoral level.<br />

The Budapest University of Technology and<br />

Economics is keenly <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and<br />

strengthen<strong>in</strong>g exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternational relations.<br />

The University has signed <strong>in</strong>to agreements of cooperation<br />

with over 100 universities, ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong><br />

Europe and <strong>in</strong> the United States of America. Some<br />

of these ventures are research oriented while others<br />

<strong>in</strong>volve the exchange of faculties and students.<br />

The University is also member of many <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

organizations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g EAU (European<br />

Universities Association), IAU (<strong>International</strong> Association<br />

of Universities), CESAEER (Conference of<br />

European Schools for Advanced Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Education<br />

and Research). Many professors of the University<br />

hold lead<strong>in</strong>g positions <strong>in</strong> these <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

professional organizations.<br />

The campus of the Budapest University of Technology<br />

and Economics is located along the Danube<br />

River between two bridges. Its eclectic collection of<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs – constructed between 1892 and 1898 –

has been part of the World Heritage s<strong>in</strong>ce 1987<br />

based on the Declaration of UNESCO. Further parts<br />

of the campus were built after World War I. and II.,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g academic build<strong>in</strong>gs, nuclear tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g reactor,<br />

student hostels, cafeterias and a new section of<br />

the campus is under construction right now.<br />

Accreditation<br />

As a state university Budapest University of Technology<br />

and Economics functions under the auspices<br />

of the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Education and Culture. The<br />

B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs of the University taught<br />

<strong>in</strong> Hungarian and English have been reaccredited<br />

by the Hungarian Accreditation Board <strong>in</strong> 2004.<br />

<strong>International</strong> Recognition<br />

of the <strong>Degree</strong>s<br />

In professions – and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g belongs to this<br />

circle – where the conditions of education <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong><br />

are identical with those <strong>in</strong> the European Union,<br />

and these have already been recognized, the<br />

member states of the European Union are<br />

obliged to accept the diplomas issued <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent of the language of tuition. The<br />

EU Directives list a few professions which receive<br />

not only automatic recognition but license right,<br />

too. Architecture is one of those specialities.<br />

The B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees of the University<br />

are fully recognized and accepted <strong>in</strong> overseas<br />

countries, as well, and hundreds of the graduates<br />

could cont<strong>in</strong>ue their studies on graduate, postgraduate<br />

level, or got jobs at national, mult<strong>in</strong>ational<br />

companies and governmental authorities,<br />

universities, research centers.<br />

Full-Time <strong>Programs</strong> <strong>in</strong> English<br />

The Budapest University of Technology and Economics<br />

has eight faculties:<br />

• Architecture<br />

• Chemical and Bio-Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Economic and Social Sciences<br />

• Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Informatics<br />

• Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Natural Sciences<br />

• Transportation Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Degree</strong> programs, taught <strong>in</strong> English <strong>in</strong> all eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

faculties, lead to the<br />

• B.Sc. – a 4-year program<br />

• M.Sc. – a 2-year program<br />

• Ph.D. – usually 3 years of <strong>in</strong>dividualized studies<br />

and research<br />

B.Sc. Program<br />

Courses for the B.Sc. degree are four years <strong>in</strong> duration.<br />

These eight semesters provide natural<br />

sciences’ fundamentals needed for eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

such as mathematics, physics, mechanics and<br />

chemistry, plus a thorough knowledge <strong>in</strong> design <strong>in</strong><br />

the field of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. A wide choice of optional<br />

subjects if offered so that the students can pursue<br />

their own <strong>in</strong>terest and goals. Experimental work<br />

<strong>in</strong> well equipped laboratories is emphasized and<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the use of computers is an <strong>in</strong>tegral part<br />

of the course.<br />

The hours of <strong>in</strong>struction range from 26 to 32<br />

hours per week. Some variations occurs from faculty<br />

to faculty and also dur<strong>in</strong>g the last semester<br />

when students work on their diploma project.<br />

Students take 5 or 6 exams each semester. On<br />

successful completion of the seven or eight semesters<br />

(depend<strong>in</strong>g on the faculty curriculum), f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

exams and the diploma project, a student will be<br />

granted a B.Sc. degree which certifies its holder’s<br />

ability to engage <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g production work.<br />

M.Sc. Program<br />

Students who already have a B.Sc. degree can<br />

pursue an M.Sc. degree <strong>in</strong> the same field of study<br />

at the Budapest University of Technology and<br />

Economics. Acceptance and placement are based<br />

on a student’s academic credentials and current<br />

level of knowledge which is assessed on the stu-

dent’s arrival. Some M.Sc. programs offer a preparatory<br />

semester so students can review the necessary<br />

subject matter.<br />

Applicants must submit transcripts and if they<br />

have been employed s<strong>in</strong>ce graduation, description<br />

of their professional experience. Courses are run<br />

<strong>in</strong> small groups and the students work <strong>in</strong>dividually<br />

under the direction of a personal adviser. They<br />

have access to laboratories, research facilities and<br />

computers.<br />

An M.Sc. program is 4 semesters or 2 years <strong>in</strong><br />

duration and conta<strong>in</strong>s of 26 hours of <strong>in</strong>struction<br />

per week and 5 exam<strong>in</strong>ations per semester. A<br />

degree is granted on successful completion of a<br />

thesis and f<strong>in</strong>al exam.<br />

Ph.D. <strong>Programs</strong><br />

Applicants for a Ph.D. program must hold an<br />

M.Sc. degree, possess an overall understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of and high competence <strong>in</strong> their field of knowledge<br />

and be familiar with cognitive discipl<strong>in</strong>es<br />

and capable <strong>in</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g research techniques. They<br />

should also demonstrate a sense of responsibility<br />

for advancement of scientific knowledge, publication<br />

<strong>in</strong> scientific journals and <strong>in</strong>ternational acceptance<br />

of their work.<br />

Ph.D. candidates carry out their studies and<br />

research on an <strong>in</strong>dividual basis under the guidance<br />

of a professor or senior member of a specific<br />

faculty’s research staff. Work toward a Ph.D. degree<br />

usually takes 3 years, The degree is granted<br />

once the candidate passes the required exam<strong>in</strong>ations<br />

and his/her thesis is accepted.<br />

Additional <strong>Academic</strong> Opportunities<br />

In addition to full-time degree programs <strong>in</strong> all eight<br />

faculties, the Budapest University of Technology<br />

and Economics offer several others courses:<br />

Pre-Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Course<br />

This program prepares students for the first year<br />

studies <strong>in</strong> B.Sc. programs.<br />

The Pre-Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Course provides two semesters<br />

of <strong>in</strong>tensive <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> Mathematics<br />

(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Algebra, Geometry, Comput<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Draw<strong>in</strong>g), Physics (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Mechanics,<br />

Electricity, Thermodynamics, Optics), and<br />

English language as well as conceptual approach<br />

to eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. It is also possible to jo<strong>in</strong> the second<br />

semester only.<br />

Students who achieve at least mark 4 out of 5<br />

at the end of these cons semester can beg<strong>in</strong> their<br />

first year eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g studies <strong>in</strong> the B.Sc. degree<br />

program without tak<strong>in</strong>g the placement test.<br />

One-Semester and Study Abroad <strong>Programs</strong><br />

BME has a tradition of organiz<strong>in</strong>g one-semester<br />

credit courses or special <strong>in</strong>terest courses. The<br />

University also offers Study Abroad opportunities<br />

for students of different universities who can<br />

choose subjects from the University curriculum,<br />

satisfy<strong>in</strong>g the credit transfer requirements of their<br />

home university.<br />

Introduction Program<br />

It offers orientation for new students dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

week of enrolment <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>troductory lectures<br />

on BME and <strong>Hungary</strong>, registration, residence permit,<br />

medical check-up, sight-see<strong>in</strong>g on the campus<br />

and <strong>in</strong> the city and the reception of the Rector <strong>in</strong><br />

honor of the new <strong>in</strong>ternational students.<br />

Faculties of Budapest University of Technology and Economics<br />

Faculty of Architecture<br />

The Faculty of Architecture focuses on develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

highly professional experts <strong>in</strong> architectural eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

who are aware of the social and cultural<br />

implications of their profession. Versatility is emphasized<br />

so that students will ga<strong>in</strong> fundamental<br />

knowledge and abilities <strong>in</strong> every possible field of<br />

architecture and be able to f<strong>in</strong>d work <strong>in</strong> a highly<br />

competitive job market, and <strong>in</strong> any build<strong>in</strong>g- or<br />

design-related area of consult<strong>in</strong>g, construction,<br />

and management. The 6-year program <strong>in</strong> English<br />

leads directly to an M.Sc. degree <strong>in</strong> Architecture<br />

and Architectural Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g (Dipl. Ing. Arch.),<br />

but it is also possible to stop at the B.Sc. level.<br />

Graduates of the Faculty of Architecture are<br />

qualified for a broad spectrum of architectural<br />

occupations:<br />

• Design, construction, and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of residential,<br />

public, <strong>in</strong>dustrial and agricultural<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs;<br />

• Reconstruction and the preservation of historical<br />

monuments;<br />

• Urban design and settlement plann<strong>in</strong>g; and<br />

• Adm<strong>in</strong>istration of all these activities.<br />

The curricula were organized on Swiss and German<br />

models. The Faculty has ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed these traditions<br />

for the last 40 years but provides additional<br />

European and <strong>in</strong>ternational dimensions through<br />

guest speakers from abroad, topical short courses,<br />

workshop sem<strong>in</strong>ars and exchange programs.<br />

The 1 st –5 th year program of the Faculty of Architecture<br />

taught <strong>in</strong> English is <strong>in</strong> full conformity<br />

with the 5-year program provided <strong>in</strong> Hungarian,<br />

which after two years practice and experience is<br />

accepted for access to EUR-ING title.<br />

General Course<br />

The one-year program <strong>in</strong> English, called the General<br />

Course precedes the Basic Course. It is designed<br />

to develop the skills of students from<br />

abroad so they will be at no disadvantage <strong>in</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the Faculty’s exact<strong>in</strong>g educational standards.<br />

Students are <strong>in</strong>troduced to various aspects of the<br />

profession they have selected, and they concentrate<br />

on study<strong>in</strong>g English and basic technical subjects<br />

such as mathematics and freehand draw<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Students who show enough skills at the Placement<br />

Test can automatically (immediately) start<br />

the Basic Course (B.Sc.).<br />

<strong>Academic</strong> program of the Faculty of Architecture<br />

B.Sc./M.Sc. studies<br />

The two-level B.Sc, M.Sc tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the English<br />

language section of the Faculty of Architecture is<br />

realized <strong>in</strong> a split-up system, <strong>in</strong> full conformity<br />

with the Hungarian language section. Hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

completed the 6 th semester, students have the<br />

choice either to obta<strong>in</strong> the M.Sc. degree correspond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to the Hungarian diploma <strong>in</strong> architecture<br />

after 4 additional semesters, or complet<strong>in</strong>g only<br />

two semesters to get the B.Sc. degree <strong>in</strong> Architecture<br />

and Architectural Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. Of course,<br />

after the B.Sc. degree, students may decide to<br />

obta<strong>in</strong> also the M.Sc. degree at this Faculty, <strong>in</strong> this<br />

case their credits will be acknowledged.<br />

Students, both <strong>in</strong>ternational and Hungarian,<br />

who have a command of both languages can<br />

choose from either programs.<br />

Master’s Program<br />

Students who have earned a B.Sc. degree <strong>in</strong> other<br />

schools of architecture can jo<strong>in</strong> the Master’s Program.<br />

<strong>Programs</strong> will be tailored to their previous<br />

education and special needs. These studies encompass<br />

a wide range of complex design topics<br />

and elective subjects grouped <strong>in</strong> three directions:<br />

• Structural Design – build<strong>in</strong>gs and other structures.<br />

• Architectural Design – build<strong>in</strong>gs with different<br />

functions, their <strong>in</strong>teriors and surround<strong>in</strong>gs; the<br />

preservation of historical build<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

• Town Plann<strong>in</strong>g – urban design, settlement<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g and management.<br />

Graduation<br />

Graduation from the University is based on the<br />

successful completion of exam<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> all subjects<br />

before a F<strong>in</strong>al Exam<strong>in</strong>ation Board and on the<br />

successful defence of a diploma project. The exam-

<strong>in</strong>ations are public and the Board consists of professors<br />

and em<strong>in</strong>ent specialists <strong>in</strong> the profession.<br />

Diploma projects are prepared <strong>in</strong> the last semester<br />

under departmental guidance and can be submitted<br />

only by students with an “absolutorium” (university<br />

leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate). The diploma project is<br />

expected to reflect the author’s familiarity with<br />

technical and aesthetic knowledge fundamental to<br />

architectural practice, and his/her creativity <strong>in</strong><br />

apply<strong>in</strong>g it. Diploma projects are defended <strong>in</strong><br />

public exam<strong>in</strong>ations before the F<strong>in</strong>al Exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

Board. Currently, <strong>in</strong>ternational agreements<br />

make it possible for certa<strong>in</strong> Hungarian students to<br />

prepare and defend their diploma projects <strong>in</strong> the<br />

university of another country. Students from<br />

abroad can correspond<strong>in</strong>gly prepare and defend<br />

their thesis projects under the guidance of the<br />

Faculty of Architecture at the Budapest University<br />

of Technology and Economics.<br />

Faculty of Chemical and Bio-<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The education of chemical eng<strong>in</strong>eers and chemists<br />

has a long-stand<strong>in</strong>g tradition <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong>. <strong>Hungary</strong>’s<br />

earliest chemistry department was established<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1763 at the Selmecbánya M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g School,<br />

the first school to offer practical <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> the<br />

chemical laboratory. In 1769, a common department<br />

for chemistry and botany was founded at the<br />

University of Nagyszombat, which was resettled<br />

<strong>in</strong> Buda <strong>in</strong> 1777 and later <strong>in</strong> Pest.<br />

In 1846, the Department of General and Technical<br />

Chemistry was founded at Joseph II Industrial<br />

School, one of the Budapest University of Technology<br />

and Economics’s predecessor <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

Education of chemical eng<strong>in</strong>eers, separate from<br />

that of mechanical and civil eng<strong>in</strong>eers, reaches<br />

back to the 1863/64 academic year.<br />

Royal Joseph Polytechnic became a technical<br />

university <strong>in</strong> 1871. The academic freedom <strong>in</strong>troduced<br />

by this university-level status allowed students<br />

to freely select the subjects they wished to<br />

study. However, the need for an <strong>in</strong>terrelated,<br />

logical sequence of subjects soon became evident,<br />

so <strong>in</strong> 1892 a compulsory curriculum and<br />

timetable was <strong>in</strong>troduced. From the foundation<br />

of the Faculty until 1948, only a four-year-term of<br />

studies without specializations was offered. Follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the educational reforms of 1948, the departments<br />

of Inorganic Chemical Technology,<br />

Organic Chemical Technology, and Agricultural<br />

and Food Chemistry were established. The Inorganic<br />

Chemical Technology Department is no<br />

longer a part of the Faculty because <strong>in</strong> 1952 its<br />

tasks were taken over by the University of Chemical<br />

Industry <strong>in</strong> Veszprém. Further reforms <strong>in</strong> the<br />

1960s extended chemical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g studies to<br />

the M.Sc. level and <strong>in</strong>troduced the range of specialized<br />

studies identified below. A Ph.D. program<br />

has also been established. Studies <strong>in</strong> English<br />

at the Faculty of Chemical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g began<br />

<strong>in</strong> the 1985/86 academic year.<br />

Students receive a thorough <strong>in</strong>troduction to<br />

areas basic to chemical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g before they<br />

beg<strong>in</strong> their specializations <strong>in</strong> the sixth semester.<br />

Courses <strong>in</strong> each of the follow<strong>in</strong>g branches are<br />

available to students at all levels:<br />

The Faculty of Chemical and Bio-Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aims for its students to acquire a profound theoretical<br />

knowledge <strong>in</strong> mathematics, physics and<br />

physical chemistry. It also aims to have its students<br />

experience, dur<strong>in</strong>g their studies, all the<br />

types of tasks that chemical eng<strong>in</strong>eers encounter<br />

<strong>in</strong> their practical everyday work. Students will<br />

acquire up-to-date laboratory skills, get acqua<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

with the mach<strong>in</strong>es and apparatus used <strong>in</strong> the<br />

chemical <strong>in</strong>dustry, know the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples needed for<br />

their optimal operation, and develop expertise <strong>in</strong> a<br />

more specific technology with<strong>in</strong> the chemical, food<br />

and light <strong>in</strong>dustries. In the framework of <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, students will learn to carry out technological<br />

design and solve research problems <strong>in</strong> the<br />

preparation for their diploma projects.<br />

Graduates of this Faculty will be versed <strong>in</strong>:<br />

• The operations and personnel <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />

chemical processes on an <strong>in</strong>dustrial scale,<br />

• The development of the technology and products<br />

of <strong>in</strong>dustrial chemical processes,

<strong>in</strong>to the national economy, and<br />

operations and technologies.<br />

A three-year Ph.D. program is also available <strong>in</strong><br />

all majors offered by the Faculty.<br />

Faculty of Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The Faculty of Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g is the oldest Faculty<br />

of the University and can trace its history<br />

back to the University’s predecessor, the Institutum<br />

Geometricum, founded by Emperor Joseph II<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1782. In the past 210 years, thousands of eng<strong>in</strong>eers<br />

have graduated from this Faculty to work<br />

worldwide as educators, <strong>in</strong>ternational researchers<br />

and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g project managers.<br />

The most essential service of the Faculty – education<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ked closely to research and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

work – is reflected <strong>in</strong> the scientific activities of<br />

nearly 270 eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>in</strong> 10 departments. They<br />

have contributed significantly to the scientific<br />

solution of diverse eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g problems.<br />

Out of the approximately 1700 students, who<br />

study at this Faculty, about 90 students from abroad<br />

participate <strong>in</strong> the English language program.<br />

The eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g programs <strong>in</strong> English follow the<br />

English–American pattern and lead to a B.Sc. degree<br />

<strong>in</strong> four years and to the M.Sc. degree <strong>in</strong> an additional<br />

two year’s program. Postgraduate or Ph.D. courses<br />

are guided under <strong>in</strong>dividualized programs that<br />

normally take three or more years to complete.<br />

The B.Sc. program has two m<strong>in</strong>ors: Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

m<strong>in</strong>or and Land Survey<strong>in</strong>g and Geo<strong>in</strong>formatics<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>or. Inside the Civil Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

m<strong>in</strong>or there are two branches: Branch of Structural<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Branch of Infrastructure –<br />

Environmental Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. The first three semesters<br />

of the branches feature a universal, fundamental<br />

education, while <strong>in</strong> the subsequent semesters,<br />

studies divide accord<strong>in</strong>g to the branches.<br />

Students take a block of compulsory subjects that<br />

provide fundamental education <strong>in</strong> their preferred<br />

branch of study, and <strong>in</strong> the seventh semester a<br />

block of elective subjects. The eighth semester is<br />

reserved for prepar<strong>in</strong>g the diploma work.<br />

Branch Studies – Areas of Concentration<br />

Each branch offers specific educational objectives:<br />

• Graduates from the Branch of Structural Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

create eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g structures by utiliz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and design<strong>in</strong>g structural materials. They<br />

are expected to design, construct and organize<br />

the <strong>in</strong>vestments of mechanically, structurally<br />

and technologically complex structures <strong>in</strong> cooperation<br />

with architects and transport and hydraulics<br />

specialists. Future structural eng<strong>in</strong>eers<br />

who graduate from this branch will be<br />

able to design and construct, among other<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs, fly overs and underground passages for<br />

traffic networks; power stations, cool<strong>in</strong>g towers,<br />

crane ways, transmission l<strong>in</strong>e structures<br />

and TV towers; halls, storehouses, <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />

plants, and multi-store build<strong>in</strong>gs as well as<br />

hydraulic eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and water supply structures.<br />

• Graduates from the Branch of Infrastructural<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, ga<strong>in</strong> detailed knowledge of road,<br />

motorway and airfield construction; railway<br />

and metropolitan railroad construction; urban<br />

transport; and road traffic. Because the construction<br />

and foundations of build<strong>in</strong>gs, bridges,<br />

hydraulic eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and other structures<br />

require knowledge of geotechnics (soil mechanics,<br />

earthwork, foundations and underground<br />

structures), they also study these areas.<br />

The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal subjects of this branch essentially<br />

focus on design, but the students also<br />

learn about related technological, constructional<br />

and operational problems. In addition, they<br />

become proficient <strong>in</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g methods of laboratory<br />

test<strong>in</strong>g and of research and development,<br />

which are <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> specialized<br />

subjects. Students possess knowledge <strong>in</strong> hydrology,<br />

hydraulics, hydraulic eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

water management and so are qualified <strong>in</strong><br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g design, <strong>in</strong>vestments, construction,<br />

operation and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of hydraulic eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

structures, water supply and canalization,<br />

agricultural hydraulic eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

water management. They also possess a work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

knowledge of subjects as flood protection,<br />

river regulation, foundations, re<strong>in</strong>forced concrete<br />

and steel structures for hydraulic struc-

tures, water supplies for residential areas and<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrial establishments, the technical–economic<br />

aspects of hygienic and public services<br />

(dra<strong>in</strong>age, irrigation, sewage treatment and<br />

utilization), the design, construction and operation<br />

of hydraulic eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g structures and<br />

also environmental eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Graduates from the Branch of Geo<strong>in</strong>formatical<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g can spatially locate and map natural<br />

and artificial configurations, set out designed<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g structures, determ<strong>in</strong>e deformations<br />

of erected constructions, develop<br />

control po<strong>in</strong>t networks, perform astronomical<br />

and gravitational measurements and determ<strong>in</strong>e<br />

the Earth‘s geodynamical processes. Graduates<br />

<strong>in</strong> survey<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g can design and manage<br />

economic solutions for geodesic problems<br />

at a high eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g level. They can also develop<br />

relevant technologies and perform significant<br />

scientific research.<br />

Erasmus Mundus Master Course: EURO-Aquae<br />

EURO-Aquae: Euro Hydro Informatics and Water<br />

Management. The Master Course is supported by<br />

the European Commission Directorate General for<br />

Education and Culture through the actions 1&2<br />

of the Erasmus Mundus framework. The partner<br />

universities issue the M.Sc. (Master of Science)<br />

academic degree accord<strong>in</strong>g to the local situation.<br />

The degree is recognized by all participat<strong>in</strong>g countries.<br />

The consortium tries to establish a jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />

european degree named “Master of Science <strong>in</strong><br />

Hydro-Informatics & Water Management”.<br />

Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences<br />

General Information<br />

The Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences was<br />

established <strong>in</strong> 1998 <strong>in</strong> the framework of a restructur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

project of BME. On one hand the University<br />

returned to its historical traditions: as one of the<br />

educational tasks of the former József Nádor University<br />

of Technical and Economic Studies was to<br />

provide high quality tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for future economists.<br />

On the other hand for meet<strong>in</strong>g the rapidly<br />

chang<strong>in</strong>g requirements of contemporary economy<br />

the scope of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at the University has been<br />

strengthened fundamentally by the <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />

programs <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Management as well as<br />

<strong>in</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Management.<br />

The total number of students of different graduate,<br />

postgraduate and distance learn<strong>in</strong>g forms of<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g launched by the Faculty is about 5000. Research<br />

is conducted <strong>in</strong> 3 doctorate (Ph.D.) schools.<br />

Due to the multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary nature of the University,<br />

science and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g subjects for future<br />

economists are taught by the staff of different eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

faculties as well as the subjects of the Faculty<br />

of Economic and Social Sciences’ are present <strong>in</strong><br />

the educational programs of all other faculties.<br />

Parallel to the traditional five-year university<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> 2006 accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Bologna model,<br />

the two-cycle system (for B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees)<br />

was <strong>in</strong>troduced at the Faculty. The f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

year of graduation for students of the traditional<br />

five-year tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is scheduled for 2010. The language<br />

of the above programs is Hungarian but<br />

both full time <strong>in</strong>ternational and exchange students<br />

of the University have the possibility to study<br />

different subjects <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess and economics <strong>in</strong><br />

English. Hungarian and Central European Studies,<br />

Hungarian as a foreign language courses are also<br />

offered.<br />

<strong>Degree</strong> programs <strong>in</strong> English will start <strong>in</strong> 2007/<br />

2008 academic year.<br />

B.Sc. program <strong>in</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess and Management<br />

will start <strong>in</strong> 2008/2009 academic year.<br />

From 2008 a full-time B.Sc. program <strong>in</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

and Management <strong>in</strong> English is to be <strong>in</strong>troduced.<br />

Faculty of Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and Informatics<br />

The Faculty of Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g founded <strong>in</strong><br />

1949 has been renowned for excellence <strong>in</strong> research<br />

and education throughout the years of<br />

changes <strong>in</strong> the scope of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. Over this<br />

period, the Faculty has earned a wide-spread <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

reputation for its high academic standards<br />

and scientific achievements. Spearhead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the movement to establish a modern education<br />

system, it has offered a comprehensive English<br />

curriculum s<strong>in</strong>ce 1992. Nearly the same time, the<br />

name of the Faculty changed to Faculty of Electri-

cal Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Informatics <strong>in</strong> order to give<br />

recognition to the grow<strong>in</strong>g importance of computer<br />

science. The English education package <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

a 3.5-year B.Sc., a 2-year M.Sc. and a<br />

3-year Ph.D. program <strong>in</strong> the fields of electrical and<br />

software eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The undergraduate B.Sc. program aims at<br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g a comprehensive knowledge with<br />

sound theoretical foundations <strong>in</strong> two areas: (1)<br />

Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g more specific<br />

studies <strong>in</strong> electronics, computer eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

power eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g; and (2) Software Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dedicated to the major doma<strong>in</strong>s of computer<br />

science. The major specializations <strong>in</strong> Electrical<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g are computer networks, control and<br />

robotics and power eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. Studies <strong>in</strong> Software<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>clude specialization <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>focommunication<br />

and software technology. Each<br />

specialization conta<strong>in</strong>s three courses focus<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

the field of <strong>in</strong>terest followed by a laboratory<br />

course and a project laboratory. In order to pursue<br />

studies <strong>in</strong> a given specialization the number<br />

of students must exceed a certa<strong>in</strong> threshold,<br />

otherwise the <strong>in</strong>terested students are k<strong>in</strong>dly<br />

directed to another specialization.<br />

The graduate M.Sc. program further advances<br />

the knowledge obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the undergraduate<br />

programs <strong>in</strong> the same two fields: (1) Electrical<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, thrust<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> communication, computer,<br />

and control eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g; (2) Software Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

deal<strong>in</strong>g with system and software development.<br />

The post-graduate Ph.D. program is available<br />

<strong>in</strong> all doma<strong>in</strong>s offered <strong>in</strong> the M.Sc. program.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce research and development requires <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g expertise, one of the major<br />

concerns of the Faculty is to endow students with<br />

high level mathematical skills <strong>in</strong> modell<strong>in</strong>g complex<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g systems. This objective implies<br />

the use of system and algorithmic theory <strong>in</strong> addition<br />

to a thorough knowledge <strong>in</strong> physics. The<br />

search for optimal solutions <strong>in</strong> the highly complex<br />

architectures of electrical and software eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

necessitates not only eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g but economical<br />

considerations, as well. As a result, the scope<br />

of the program must <strong>in</strong>clude design, research and<br />

management expertise at the same time.<br />

Several strategies have been designed to help<br />

students develop high level skills <strong>in</strong> mathematics,<br />

physics, and computation. Besides theoretical<br />

knowledge they need to carry out design and<br />

development activities <strong>in</strong> the fields of communication,<br />

<strong>in</strong>strumentation and power <strong>in</strong>dustries to<br />

further perfect their practical skills. The curriculum<br />

also <strong>in</strong>cludes solv<strong>in</strong>g tasks <strong>in</strong> the fields of<br />

production and operation.<br />

Scientific groups are formed to encourage the<br />

students to do <strong>in</strong>dependent but supervised laboratory<br />

work. Project laboratory is one of the core<br />

parts of the studies which are dedicated to <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

problem solv<strong>in</strong>g with the armory of modern<br />

work stations and SW packages. The expertise<br />

of handl<strong>in</strong>g these tools are <strong>in</strong>evitable <strong>in</strong> pursu<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g career.<br />

In order to strengthen the transfer of knowledge<br />

and know-how between the University and <strong>in</strong>dustry,<br />

the Faculty ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s close contact with well<br />

known mult<strong>in</strong>ational companies <strong>in</strong> the field of<br />

communication and computer <strong>in</strong>dustry. As a result,<br />

many <strong>in</strong>dustrial experts offer their experience and<br />

knowledge as part-time lecturers, project supervisors,<br />

members of exam<strong>in</strong>ation committees.<br />

Faculty of Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Program at the Budapest<br />

University of Technology and Economics began<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1863, and the Faculty of Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was established soon afterward, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g official<br />

operations <strong>in</strong> the 1871/72 academic year. The Faculty<br />

is justly proud of its cont<strong>in</strong>uous and progressive<br />

120-year history and now offers undergraduate and<br />

graduate programs <strong>in</strong> both Hungarian and English.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce the 1985/86 academic year, the Faculty of<br />

Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g has offered a four-year<br />

undergraduate B.Sc. degree program <strong>in</strong> English.<br />

The two-year graduate program <strong>in</strong> English, lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to an M.Sc. degree <strong>in</strong> refrigeration and air condition<strong>in</strong>g<br />

or production eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, was launched<br />

<strong>in</strong> September 1989. Another way to earn M.Sc.<br />

degree is to enrol <strong>in</strong>to the Integrated Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Course, offered s<strong>in</strong>ce 1996/97. The course <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

essential subject areas of materials and software<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, advanced mechanics, manufactur<strong>in</strong>g,

analogue and digital electronics <strong>in</strong>strumentation,<br />

microprocessors, management, market<strong>in</strong>g and f<strong>in</strong>ance.<br />

Integrated eng<strong>in</strong>eers operate at higher level<br />

than specialists, they <strong>in</strong>tegrate hardware and software<br />

products of various specialists <strong>in</strong>to complex,<br />

multi-function<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>telligent systems. Individual<br />

postgraduate academic and research programs,<br />

which are usually completed <strong>in</strong> two to three years,<br />

are available for those who already have an M.Sc.<br />

degree and wish to pursue a Ph.D. degree.<br />

The undergraduate B.Sc. program of the Faculty<br />

of Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g is designed to cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

a tradition of excellence by:<br />

Faculty of Natural Sciences<br />

The Faculty of Natural Sciences, one of the newest<br />

faculties at the Budapest University of Technology<br />

and Economics, was established <strong>in</strong> 1998 and now<br />

employs 142 full and part time faculty members.<br />

The Faculty provides classes <strong>in</strong> Mathematics and<br />

Physics and is designed to meet the needs of its<br />

own and other faculties.<br />

Courses are offered on B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree<br />

levels. The Faculty offers post-graduate scientific<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g as well. Currently more than 60 Ph.D.<br />

students are pursu<strong>in</strong>g personal programs <strong>in</strong> different<br />

areas of sciences. The Faculty also offers short<br />

courses on specific topics of current <strong>in</strong>terest.<br />

The Faculty of Natural Sciences adm<strong>in</strong>isters its<br />

own B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs <strong>in</strong> Physics, Mathematics<br />

and an M.Sc. program <strong>in</strong> Nuclear Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

A cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g educational program is also<br />

offered <strong>in</strong> reactor physics and reactor technology.<br />

For 5 years the “Eugene Wigner <strong>International</strong><br />

physics and technology – A four semester program<br />

offered to professionals work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the nuclear<br />

thermohydraulics, radiation protection, radiochemistry,<br />

reactor technology, nuclear safety and<br />

Faculty of Transportation Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The Faculty of Transportation Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g was established<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1951 as an <strong>in</strong>dependent Faculty based <strong>in</strong><br />

the city of Szolnok. It dealt with different branches of<br />

transportation and offered specializations <strong>in</strong> railway<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and transportation operations.<br />

By 1956, it functioned as the University of<br />

Civil and Transportation Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. After several<br />

reorganizations, it merged with the Budapest<br />

University of Technology and Economics <strong>in</strong> 1967.<br />

The current organization of the Faculty was developed<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1970, and the Faculty of Transportation<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g now offers degree programs with<br />

concentrations <strong>in</strong> transportation and mechanical<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The transportation eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g program provides<br />

the essential scientific foundations and the<br />

most up-to-date technical knowledge available so<br />

that eng<strong>in</strong>eers who graduate from this Faculty can<br />

go on to design road, railway, waterway, air, <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />

and trade transportation systems. Graduates<br />

of this Faculty will also be able to develop<br />

and monitor these systems reliably and economically,<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g the latest <strong>in</strong> management theory and<br />

<strong>in</strong>formatics.<br />

With<strong>in</strong> the framework of education <strong>in</strong> transportation<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, students can make their choice<br />

Late Tuition Payments<br />

Tuition fees which are not actually <strong>in</strong> the University<br />

bank account before the first day of the semester<br />

are considered late. In case of late payment of<br />

tuition fees, the University reserves the right to<br />

refuse enrolment and BME will not assist students,<br />

who are late <strong>in</strong> pay<strong>in</strong>g their tuition fees, <strong>in</strong><br />

acquir<strong>in</strong>g or renew<strong>in</strong>g their residence permits.<br />

Overpayment<br />

Tuition fees are generally not refundable except <strong>in</strong><br />

cases of overpayment. The amount overpaid will<br />

Reduction of Tuition Fees for<br />

Excellent Performance<br />

The Director of the <strong>International</strong> Education Center<br />

will consider requests for reduced fees from students<br />

who achieved an average of 4.5 (out of 5.00)<br />

or better <strong>in</strong> the previous year. Students must first<br />

submit a request to their faculty. A faculty is limited<br />

choos<strong>in</strong>g only one student whose request can<br />

bed forwarded to the <strong>International</strong> Education<br />

Center. Reductions will not exceed 30% and the<br />

faculty will <strong>in</strong>form the student about the decision.<br />

Bank<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Bank accounts for students may be opened at<br />

<strong>Academic</strong> Calendar<br />

In the <strong>Academic</strong> Year 2007/2008 the semesters <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the exam periods are scheduled as follows:<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ations<br />

The 14-week Fall and Spr<strong>in</strong>g Semesters are followed<br />

by 4–6 week exam<strong>in</strong>ation periods. Students<br />

should complete all terms assignments, lab reports,<br />

design and other assigned work before the<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ation period start. They should also have<br />

a recorded mark for their for their term work or<br />

have obta<strong>in</strong>ed their <strong>in</strong>structor’s signature (<strong>in</strong> the<br />

Transcript Book) to <strong>in</strong>dicate satisfactory completion<br />

of the term. <strong>Academic</strong> and Exam<strong>in</strong>ation Regulations<br />

permit a limited number of repetition of<br />

failed exams.<br />

Grades, Grad<strong>in</strong>g System<br />

Grades and ga<strong>in</strong>ed credit po<strong>in</strong>ts are entered <strong>in</strong>to<br />

F<strong>in</strong>al Project and Graduation<br />

Requirements<br />

B.Sc. and M.Sc.: F<strong>in</strong>al projects are prepared dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the last semester follow<strong>in</strong>g the requirements of the<br />

student’s specific study program. F<strong>in</strong>al projects<br />

consist of a practical project of a design with a thesis<br />

describ<strong>in</strong>g it. The projects are prepared under<br />

the guidance of one of the appo<strong>in</strong>ted departments.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>al projects or thesis must be defended before the<br />

F<strong>in</strong>al Exam<strong>in</strong>ation Board. The board usually consists<br />

of professors and em<strong>in</strong>ent specialists <strong>in</strong> the<br />

profession related to the student’s work.<br />

In order to graduate from the Budapest University<br />

of Technology and Economics, students<br />

must have qualified for their absolutorium or<br />

university leav<strong>in</strong>g certificate. This means that<br />

they have successfully passed all exams and<br />

completed all the required practical and research<br />

assignments and have also successfully defended<br />

their f<strong>in</strong>al project of thesis before the F<strong>in</strong>al Exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

Board.

Medical Requirements<br />

New students must have a medical check-up at<br />

the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the academic year unless they<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g documents required and accepted <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong>.<br />

Health Insurance<br />

A full basic health <strong>in</strong>surance valid for <strong>Hungary</strong> is a<br />

prerequisite for registration at the University.<br />

New students should purchase <strong>in</strong>surance when<br />

they enroll and renew it at registration for each<br />

semester except EU citizens, who are covered by<br />

their EU health <strong>in</strong>surance program. The <strong>in</strong>surance<br />

fee is approx. EUR 100 for a semester.<br />

Registration for the fall semester will take place<br />

from 27 th August to 7 th September 2007 <strong>in</strong> the<br />
