Another year has ended, a year of yet more bumps, abrasions and
bruises. But amidst the commercial frenzy of celebrating the birth of the
Prince of Peace, there is the real value of aroha as we embrace whanau,
re-ignite old friendships, re-gather sweet memories of those who’ve
passed on, and dream prosperous thoughts for a brighter future for our
mokopuna.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please take
care in your travels. Be safe and enjoy the season in good health.
‘Nga Taumata’
Nga Taumata is a remarkable collection of photographic
portraits of Ngäti Kahungunu 1870-1906 by Samuel Carnell.
Each portrait is accompanied by an essay in English and
Mäori, which provides insight into the lives and times of the
individuals Carnell photographed.
Nga Taumata is one of the many fruits of Tohara Mohi’s discovery. This
book is based on the exhibition Kahungunu (eponymous ancestor) ka
moe..(to marry, to dream) ka puta…(to be born) which was developed
as a partnership between the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna
Mätauranga o Aotearoa, Ngäti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated and The
Hawke’s Bay Cultural Trust. It opened at the Hawke’s Bay Exhibition
Centre in Hastings in November 2000, was later shown at the National
Library Gallery in Wellington, and is scheduled for exhibition in Masterton
and Wairoa in 2004. Nga Taumata presents an intimate and telling portrait
of Ngäti Kahungunu during a period of great upheaval and challenge for
the iwi. Ngäti Kahungunu researchers undertook the selection of tipuna,
biographical essays, and whakapapa in Nga Taumata.
Nga Taumata was launched on the 11th December 2003 and is now
available for purchase from Ngäti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated. Ring toll
Various Graduates 2003
2003 has been a wonderful learning year for those who
desired to take on the challenge to study and further
educate themselves throughout the year. During all of
the hard work and tireless nights staying up to complete
that last assignment or read that 2-inch thick book to
prepare for the exam the following morning, you begin
to wonder why you even started. But then at the end
of the year, when those results come in and you look
forward to your graduation date, you smile and pat
yourself on the back and when graduation day comes,
you stand with honour to receive your taonga.
This has been the case for many Kahungunu people
throughout the motu and you are all commended for
your efforts.
The aim of this programme is to provide education that best fits the aspirations of this
generation. To strengthen and maintain the knowledge of Mäori language and cultural
practices, (tikanga) in order to develop fluency of our Mäori reo and to ensure the survival
of cultural traditions through activities especially designed to encourage communication in
Mäori. Practical skills within this programme are complemented with in-depth study of Mäori
knowledge and culture, including karakia, history, art, waiata and contemporary developments.
With the inclusion of field trips to gain an appreciation of local history, there are lectures and
Ngäti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated has been a proud sponsor of
the Kahungunu Mäori Sports Awards for the past few years. A
partnership between Sport Hawke’s Bay and Ngati Kahungunu
Iwi Incorporated was initiated in 1999. The relationship has grown
from that time to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding
between the two parties at Waipatu Marae mid 2001. The Ngäti
Kahungunu Sports Awards have been announced a success
and a positive focus for the iwi to portray Kahungunu role models
and achievements.
This year the Kahungunu Mäori Sports Awards event held at the
Pettigrew Green Arena in Taradale portrayed a high standard
that complemented the evening, depicting a touch of class in
pursuit of excellence. Those in attendance enjoyed the cheerful
atmosphere and entertainment while waiting in anticipation for
the announcement of the category winners and the overall 2003
Kahungunu Mäori Sportsperson of the Year.
The 2003 Kahungunu Mäori Sports Awards acknowledged the
following people: Junior Sportswoman of the Year: Ramona
Belmont - NZ Women’s Snooker/Billiards, Junior Sportsman of
the Year: Nui Bartlett – HB Magpies and NZ Men’s Touch Team,
Mäori Administrator of the Year: Carlien Paul – NZ Swimming,
National Softball and Regional Netball, Senior Sportsman of the
Year: Paul Winitana – NZ Tall Black and Mäori Koru Captain,
Coach of the Year: Dion Crouch – Zero Tolerance Kick Boxing
Trainer.
The 2003 Kahungunu Mäori Sportsperson of the Year was
awarded jointly to Ramona Belmont and Nui Bartlett. NKII
congratulates all those who were nominated in the various
categories and wish them every success for 2004.
We also acknowledge Sam Christie and Gevana Dean of Sport
HB, for organising this positive event, evidence of the strong
relationship between our two organisations. Planning of the 2004
Kahungunu Mäori Sports Awards, are well underway.
In less than 15 months the Inter Iwi Sports Challenge will take place here in Kahungunu.
Three iwi: Kahungunu, Te Arawa and Tainui will compete in the 2nd tri-annual Inter Iwi
Sports Challenge hosted by Ngäti Kahungunu Iwi. This event requires quality planning and
extensive preparation and already a committee has met to identify what needs to be done
to make this event a great success. Ideally each Marae will conduct a sports challenge to
lead up to an inter Marae challenge, thereafter a Taiwhenua challenge that will lead up to
the main inter iwi tournament. If you are interested in learning more about the Ngäti
Kahungunu Sports Challenge contact Danielle Keil-Lambert or Sam Christie at the Pettigrew
Green Arena (06) 845-9333.
The Ngäti Kahungunu Mäori Hockey Committee plans to hold their inaugural mixed junior
Hockey Tournament on 7th-8th of February 2004, at Legends Hockey Stadium, Park Island,
Napier. The Committee hopes to draw six teams to Napier for this weekend tournament
mainly from the Ngäti Kahungunu area.
Accommodation will be provided at local marae and kura kaupapa with a night of kapa haka
entertainment. Ngäti Kahungunu Mäori Hockey will enter two teams which are primarily
made up of Provincial Representative Age Group Hockey players under the age of 17.
If anyone is interested in entering a team or needs further information, please contact the
Secretary, Angie Fergus on any of the following:
Email: angief@ihug.co.nz, home: 06 834-2924 or work: 06 974-4307.

Five years ago a couple of Mäori hockey parents decided that there was not enough skill building for our
tamariki. In this vein in 1999 we embarked upon our journey of organising an inaugural Hockey Camp
for young Mäori players. Ngäti Kahungunu Black Sticks, Caryn Paewai and Tina Bell-Kake were approached
to coach and upskill our tamariki and provide good role models. According to our tamariki and parents
this Camp was a success!
Since this time we have held three further Junior Mäori Hockey Camps where tamariki me rangatahi from
Wairarapa through to Poverty Bay have attended. Mäori Players from the Blacksticks, the NZ Men’s
Team and the NZ Mäori Men’s Team have attended and have provided outstanding coaching and
leadership skills.
Though we would have liked our tamariki to have participated in the Iwi Sport Challenge, we decided that
we would use our initiative and hold a tournament where young players are able to network with other
provinces. Our Mäori kids need to have opportunities in their sport and we hope that we can provide some
assistance to help them strive for their goals by offering these opportunities.
Secretary: Angie Fergus
For the past 6 years Kaitoki, Makirikiri and Whiti te
Ra Marae have hosted a Marae Golf Tournament.
Each year more and more people have participated. The idea of each marae taking turns to host gives
that marae the opportunity to raise funds. This year all funds will go to Kaitoki Marae. Tee-off is at 10.00am
on Saturday 28th February 2004 at the Dannevirke Golf Club. Entry fee is only $20.00 which includes
morning tea and an evening meal. You’re playing for the ‘Dave Barber Memorial Cup’ and the ‘Inaugural
Inter-Marae Trophy’. Entries close on Sunday 22nd February 2004, so hurry up and get in with a grin.
Ngäti Kahungunu was well represented at the Mäori Touch Nationals in Hopu Hopu where three teams
attended under the banner of Te Matau a Maui. The U21 Women’s team came third overall with the Open
Mixed making it to the semi-finals and the U21 Men’s team winning their section in an exciting final. A
total of 19 Kahungunu rangatahi were selected for the Mäori National Squads intending to participate in
the Youth World Cup in 2005.
Wahine Community Nurse shares her aspirations with the iwi
Ko Angeline Tangiora toku ingoa
Angeline Tangiora born and bred in the community of Te Hauke Heretaunga, has nursed the Hawke’s
Bay community for the past 12 years. As a youngster her career focus was to become a secretary.
However with the influence of her mother, Ada Tangiora, Angeline reluctantly began studies towards
becoming a nurse. In 1976 she completed her training which meant staying at the hospital quarters and
working in the hospital for 3 years as a registered nurse before moving into the community. Believing
she lacked the passion to be a nurse, she decided to leave the country to travel the world, where her
nursing qualification came in handy and she began nursing in Australia. Angeline returned home 15 years
later and her passion grew stronger as she saw the health needs in her community. Angeline initiated
some wonderful projects that to this day are still unfolding.
On her return to Kahungunu she saw many changes in the Health system that were positive for
Mäori. Angeline worked with Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga Hauora which is now one of Heretaunga’s
main services to the community. She then moved on to work with Te Roopu Huihuinga Hauora
and created a support group for community nurses where they were able to meet on a regular
basis to share with each other and nurture each other so that they could be more effective in the
community for our people.
Recently Angeline left the workforce to further her studies by completing her Masters Degree in
Nursing and Management. The objective of this move is to gain a higher qualification and come
back into the health sector prepared for a leadership role rather than working at grass roots level.
Angeline said that we have many Mäori Health providers working at grass roots and it’s time for
us to move to the next level. Angeline hopes that other Mäori workers and nurses will follow so that
Mäori representation at Management level is strong and powerful. Good luck Angeline!
Wanganui Agricultural Land Based Training recently hosted the National Land Based Training
Competitions for secondary Schools. These competitions are equivalent to the well mooted Young
Farmer of the Year and yes, a team representing Te Aute College took out this national title.
Seven schools representing their regions, vied for this honour. The standard of competition was
extremely high and all teams performed impressively.Te Aute College earned the right to compete
at the nationals by winning the Hawkes’ Bay regionals.
All teams had to complete seven tasks and were judged on their knowledge of the activity, their
skill, and working as a team in the following areas.
• Sheep penning, drafting, catching and shearing a sheep
• Cattle drafting, weight, finding the mean average, drenching
• 4 wheel drive motorbike, hay-stacking onto a trailer, weaving,
Te Aute won the 4 wheel drive section, where they excelled in safety hazard and maintenance.
They won the Pratley Yard section. The time to beat was 14.5 minutes. They did it with 30 seconds
to spare. They also scored top marks for their all round skill and knowledge.
Donald Matiaha, Riki Hawaikirangi, Abe Whiti, Tamati Reedy, Joshua Chrystal and Robert Severne
represented Te Äute College with pride and after receiving their winning trophy, they performed
