Food
The interior of this new establishment
is very cosy. The dark-coloured walls
are adorned with framed up pictures of
the owner’s family. One side of the wall
even boasts a framed up pua kumbu,
whose intricate designs complement
the rest of the interior décor perfectly.
One of the distinctive features of the
restaurant is that old kerosene lamps
are lit and placed at every table,
creating an almost magical ambience in
the evenings.
Working his magic in the kitchen is a
specially trained chef, whose expertise
elevates the Dayak dishes served at the.
Dyak to a ‘culinary’ level.
Looking at the.Dyak’s menu, one
might be surprised at how many
types of Dayak dishes there are.
Certainly, there’s more than just
‘Pansoh Manuk’, and there’s a good
variety of pork dishes.
Recommended items include Jani
Kari, which is a dish of three-layered
pork simmered in a rich curry gravy,
which has become a hit with guests.
The chef puts his spin to an
otherwise normal pork burger,
turning it into something truly
• Pork burger
one-of-a-kind. Staying true to the
theme of the restaurant, a special
jam is created using local herbs and
spices, lending a sweet, earthy and
savoury flavour to the burger. The
homemade patty is succulent and
perfectly done and the char marks
on other side of the patty make for a
beautiful presentation.
For those who crave barbecued
meat, the Jani Tunu is a perfect
choice. Beautifully charred on the
outside and succulent in the inside,
this dish of grilled three layered pork
is sure to satisfy your hunger for
simple, sumptuous grilled pork!
Ikan Lempis is not to be missed,
especially if you like fish. A whole
tilapia fish is wrapped in a fragrant
turmeric leaf and garnished generously
with ginger and cut chillies. The owner
guarantees fresh tilapia brought in
directly from Batang Ai.
What’s a meal without the veggies?
Two of the must try’s at the.Dyak
are Petai Gulai Kechala (Bitter nuts
sauteed with wild ginger flowers and
onion) and Daun Ubi Randau Guring,
which is a dish of sweet potato leaves
sauteed with dried shrimps, garlic,
desiccated coconut and chillies.
While a traditional Dayak meal does
not end with dessert, the.Dyak does
serve desserts in the form of Tuak
Ice Cream and Tapai Ice Cream, both
boasting very unique flavours indeed.
So unique in fact, that you simply
must try them yourself.
Jani Tunu •
the.Dyak is strictly non-Halal and is
MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) free.
