The new Satok Market
embodies the spirit of the
Sunday Market
Almost anyone who has
been to Kuching will surely
have visited the ever-busy
‘Sunday Market’, which is the
central of attention along Jalan
Satok. Due to the limitations of the
venue and much inconvenience
to shoppers and sellers as well as
littering, the ‘new’ Medan Niaga
Satok has now been set up. Located
at Jalan Matang, Petra Jaya, just
across the main bridge from Jalan
Satok, the Market is due to be
opened for business in mid 2012.
Built at a cost of RM46million, this
mega market was a joint venture
between the Federal Government
through its agricultural agency,
Federal Agricultural Marketing
Authority (FAMA) and the Sarawak
State Government and covers an
area of 12.25 acres. As the most
modern market of its kind in

Sarawak, Medan Niaga Satok is
expected to be a shoppers’ paradise,
well planned, clean, orderly and
conveniently accessed. What’s more,
there is even a plan to have water
taxis plying the venue as a jetty has
also been built at the site!
Compared to the old market,
this new Medan Niaga Satok will
always be clean thanks to a modern
system of disposing waste and
rubbish generated from the business
enterprises. At this new market, this
litter will no longer be an issue as the
disposal system is efficient, effective
and environmentally friendly.
The market is divided into five
main blocks – Semi-wet block, Wet
block, Plaza block, Food block and
FAMA’s office. The separation of
the different types of sellers and
entrepreneurs enable the different
blocks to be easily cleaned and
facilitate smooth flow of customers
and visitors to the area. Furthermore,
these entrepreneurs and shoppers
will now have a roof over their heads
and are spared from the hot sun, rain
or strong winds. Estimates are that
some 1800 traders and sellers will
make the transition to the new site
