Kuching, Sarawak’s capital
city, is very similar to
many cities in Asia; they
are mostly sited near to a river for
convenience and also accessibility. A
number of bridges have been built
for city folks to access either side of
the river in Kuching and also one
can take the ‘Water taxi’ or sampan
across at the famed Waterfront.
The city’s rapid growth necessitate
another bridge for increasing traffic
volume crossing the river between
City South and City North and a toll
bridge completed in 2003 provided
the solution to the issue.
Located at Tanah Puteh, between
the State Administrative enclave of
Petra Jaya and the industrial areas
of Pending, the Tun Salahuddin
bridge has been very popular with
commuters in the city, so much so that
within first four months of operation,
the number of users reached one
million, majority of whom preferring
the short distance travelled when
compared to the long about way
through the Satok side bridge. The
16-lane motorist access bridge with
Tun Salahuddin Bridge
gives Kuching commuters a
timely and convenient route
in crossing the river
its fully computerized system makes
it very convenient for motorist
and motorcyclist alike and since its
commencement in 2003 as the best
alternative route crossing the Sarawak
River to one of the major crossings
today with average daily users of
almost 26,000. The good news is
that commuters now have even more
reasons to smile as the toll operator
has new savings plans for them.
When purchasing the RM100 toll
card, you will save RM15 from the
toll as it will enable user to use until
RM115 total charges. The reloadable
toll cards cost RM3 each and start
from as low as RM10 with no
expiry date so they will remain valid
whenever you use them. It is also a
normal practice for the toll operator
to give special discounts, lucky draws
and other special offers such as the
free special limited edition toll cards
on major festival occasions. The toll
operator usually announces these
special rates prior to the festive dates
so watch out for them soon!
