NOVIGRAD
According to the 2001 population census the city of Novigrad has 4.002 inhabitants.
It is situated on a peninsula on the northwestern coast of Istria. It is 25 kn distant
from the Slovenian border. The area has been populated since antiquity and there
are numerous monuments and archaeological sites both in the city and in its
surroundings testifying to that. Some of the most important cultural monuments are
the parish church of St. Mary, Maximilian and Pelagius, the basilica of St. Pelagius
and the three-nave church of St. Agatha. To the north of the city, on the peninsula
of Krpinjan, are the remnants of a great historical estate with the late baroque palace
of the Rigo family.
