2013 ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo Orlando, Florida . March 22–26, 2013 2012 Robert M. Janowiak Outstanding Leadership and Service Award T he Robert M. Janowiak Outstanding Leadership and Service Award is given to an individual with a sustained record of leadership and service to ECEDHA (primary) and to electrical and computer engineering (secondary). ECEDHA is pleased to recognize our 2012 Robert M. Janowiak Outstanding Leadership and Service Award recipients. W. Kenneth Jenkins Professor of Electrical Engineering The Pennsylvania State University fault tolerant DSP for highly scaled VLSI systems, adaptive signal processing, multidimensional array processing, computer imaging, and bio-inspired optimization algorithms for intelligent signal processing. Kishan Baheti Program Director Electrical Communications and Cyber Systems National Science Foundation In 1989, Dr.Baheti joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a Program Director in the Division of Electrical and Communications Systems. His contributions include the development of NSF initiatives on “Combined Research and Curriculum Development”, “Semiconductor Manufacturing”, and NSF/EPRI Initiative on “Intelligent Control". He was instrumental in the development of NSF Initiative on "Research Experience for Teachers” to involve middle and high school teachers in engineering research that can be transferred to pre-college classrooms. Recently he is involved in networked control systems, sensor and actuator networks, imaging and computational video, micro and nano systems, medical robotics, science of learning, and dynamics and control of biological and medical systems. Dr. Baheti has supported and guided ECEDHA in several NSF Educational Grant Programs and activities. Under his stewardship, ECEDHA has produced several important academic research and conference programs in Nanotechnology, Engineering Globalization, and Energy and Power Engineering Curriculum Development. Dr. Baheti’s hands on leadership style catalyzed and challenged the planning committees in each of these important Grants to insure the ECEDHA Member Universities gained maximum value. Dr. Baheti has actively participated in several of ECEDHA’s Annual Conference and ECExpo’s as a distinguished representative of our engineering community. His endless desire for learning and helping others learn has served NSF, our Nation’s engineering community, academia, and ECEDHA very well. Dr. Jenkins joined Penn State as professor and head of electrical engineering in 1999. After receiving his Ph.D., Jenkins was a research scientist associate in the Communication Sciences Laboratory at the Lockheed Research Laboratory, Palo Alto, CA. In 1977 he joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he was a faculty member in Electrical and Computer Engineering from until 1999. Jenkins’ current research interests include Dr. Jenkins has served in vertically every senior management role of the ECEDHA organization over his 12 years of services. His contributions, too lengthy to list, are cornerstone to the organization’s service mission and foundation. His positive outlook on the Engineering profession, academia, and ECEDHA is still felt in activities like ECEDHA’s ABET Program, NSF Grants, specialized workshops, and corporate linkages. 2012 Diversity Award 2013 ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo ECEDHA is pleased to announce a new award for 2012, the Diversity Award. This award is given to department(s) or individual(s) in recognition of proactive efforts to increase cultural, ethic, and gender diversity within the ECE student body and among ECE faculty, that go well beyond and above the normal institutional recruiting practices. The selection is based primarily on a qualitative evaluation of the diversity initiative as described on the nomination form to recognize and encourage effective outstanding initiatives that lead to greater diversity within ECE programs. WE ARE PLEASED TO RECOGNIZE OUR 2012 DIVERSITY AWARD RECIPIENT Craig Scott Department Chair Electrical and Computer Engineering Morgan State University Dr. Craig Scott has spent six of his past 21 years as a department head, providing unsurpassed service in terms of leadership, management and mentoring support to the students, faculty and staff of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Morgan State University. He consistently demonstrates that he is a pioneer and leader in engineering education pedagogies that are profoundly impacting the quantity and quality of numerous minority professionals entering the workforce. Morgan State University is among 14 institutions classified as a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) that conveys an accredited engineering degree. At Morgan State University, Dr. Scott has accomplished the following: • Having the ECE department ranked repeatedly for the past 10 years, among the top 5 engineering schools in the nation that produce African American engineers with a Bachelor’s degree. • Oversight into the Associate of Science in Engineering effort within the State of Maryland which is responsible for creating and governing the first state led outcomesbased articulation process, for students to move directly into four-year degree programs. • Serving as the conceiver and director of the “Fundamentals of Engineering” freshman pre-calculus two course sequence designed to leverage individualized instruction and active learning teaching strategies to improve retention/graduation rates. • Architect of the “Two Plus Two” online Electrical Engineering program that leverages cost effective mobile laboratory technology to become the first Electrical Engineering program in the country to offer a fully online option. • Positioning the department to be one of a few electrical programs developing a massively open online course (MOOC) as encouraged by our institutional presence and contributions to the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The aforementioned initiatives are in part responsible for the national preeminence earned by this department. The selfless contributions of the chair, faculty and staff have resulted in the conferring of hundreds of degrees to recipients that, in some cases would not have been able to achieve a graduate status elsewhere.
